My mother and I don’t speak the same language. Her English is not good, and my Mandarin stopped at the picture-book level on the day I started kindergarten in California, as I realized that the few English words I knew weren’t going to get me very far. I immersed (沉浸) myself in strange grammar and new vocabulary. As my mother tongue withered (逐渐淡去) in my mind, English allowed me to explain my personhood here and silence the narrative that I was just a shy, odd Asian.
My wish to write, however, made me unintelligible to my mother. She couldn’t understand why I’d spoil other better chances. I’d tried to communicate with her in Chinese, searching my mind for sentences: How could I describe my gratitude for a path to self-fulfillment when all I could say was “kai xin” or “happy”? Without the words to bridge the gap between our worldviews, our dissatisfaction and worry turned into stubbornness.
I landed a day job editing a design magazine but worked on my novel in my off-hours. As its main characters, Marissa and Kathleen’s mother-daughter relationship was similar to my own, troubled and split by cultural differences—though always revived by love. But the book is in English, so my mom won’t be able to read it.
Writing the book gave me a reason to mine for details about my family. I’d spent so much of my adolescence shedding (摆脱) my background that when I reached adulthood, I became interested in our history. I started asking questions, hoping to find a new understanding of us.
Her answers were mixed with joyful memories, like the pleasant smell of the flowers my mother would pin to her blouse, or the hubbub(喧闹)of visiting her cousins in the countryside. As her world became clearer to me, I came closer to knowing who she is.
When I showed my mother a copy, she noticed her Chinese name in the acknowledgments and said in Mandarin with a shaking voice, “Now I know you truly love me.” I wish it hadn’t taken this long to find a way to tell her. She may not understand it word for word, but I know she gets the message.
4. Why did the author start to learn English?
A. She hoped to read picture books in kindergarten.
B. She was eager to introduce herself to more people.
C. She realized its importance to her life in the country.
D. She found the language strange but fairly easy to learn.
5. What does the underlined word “unintelligible” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Sensitive. B. Sympathetic.
C. Grateful. D. Incomprehensible.
6 What motivated the author to dig into her family history?
A. Her interest in her own childhood.
B. Her curiosity about other cultures.
C. Her desire to know her mother better.
D. Her need for inspiration for her novel.
7. How did the author’s mother react to the acknowledgments of the book?
A. She was surprised by it.
B. She was deeply moved and felt loved.
C. She was disappointed that she couldn’t read the book.
D She was grateful for the author’s efforts to understand her.
C 5. D 6. C 7. B
根据第一段第二句“Her English is not good, and my Mandarin stopped at the picture-book level on the day I started kindergarten in California, as I realized that the few English words I knew weren’t going to get me very far.(她的英语不好,而我的普通话在我开始在加州上幼儿园的那天就停留在了绘本的水平上,因为我意识到我知道的几个英语单词并不能让我走得很远。)”
根据第二段“She couldn’t understand why I’d spoil other better chances. I’d tried to communicate with her in Chinese, searching my mind for sentences: How could I describe my gratitude for a path to self-fulfillment when all I could say was “kai xin” or “happy”? Without the words to bridge the gap between our worldviews, our dissatisfaction and worry turned into stubbornness.(她不明白我为什么要破坏其他更好的机会。
根据第四段中的最后一句“I started asking questions, hoping to find a new understanding of us.(我开始问问题,希望找到对我们的新理解。)”
根据最后一段中的“When I showed my mother a copy, she noticed her Chinese name in the acknowledgments and said in Mandarin with a shaking voice, “Now I know you truly love me.”(当我拿给母亲看时,她注意到了致谢中她的中文名字,用颤抖的声音用普通话说:“现在我知道你是真的爱我了。”)”
C
Chinese scientists have collected seeds of several plants at a height of about 6,200 meters above sea level on the world’s highest peak — Mount Qomolangma and will permanently preserve them in a place where seeds can be kept alive for as long as thousands of years.
The country has set a seed bank, namely the Germplasm (种质) Bank of Wild Species (GBWS), located in an ordinary four-story building in a research institute in Kunming, Yunnan Province.
As the genes of most plants are contained in their seeds, germplasm resources have become the carriers of plants’ genetic information. A seed bank serves as the most important facility for preserving such resources.
The fast loss of biodiversity and germplasm resources is the main reason for the establishment of seed banks around the world. Construction of the germplasm bank in Kunming started in 2004, and it was put into operation three years later.
“Wildlife germplasm resources have great application potential in the biological industry, attracting global attention, especially for the collection and preservation of wild plants,” said a researcher. Currently, seeds can only be accepted by the GBWS if they tick at least one of the three boxes: endangered, endemic (特有的) or “of economic importance”.
The long-term conservation of a seed is a complex procedure, involving more than 70 steps, at the end of which the seed will be stored at - 20℃. If properly stored, the seed could theoretically stay alive for decades or even thousands of years.
“When a species is destroyed by natural disasters, we will activate these seeds and bring the species to life,” said Li Dezhu, director of the seed bank.
8. What does the text say about the GBWS in Kunming?
A. It has been in use since 2004. B. it lies in a four-story building.
C. It is the largest of its kind in the world. D. It stores the most seeds from Mount Oomolangma.
9. What’s the main purpose in establishing the seed bank?
A. To develop high-quality seeds. B. To store worldwide seed data.
C. To guide modern agriculture. D. To conserve biodiversity.
10. Which of the following can be accepted by the GBWS?
A. Seeds that can grow in hot weather. B. Seeds that have some medical effect.
C. Seeds with high economic value. D. Seeds widely grown by farmers.
11. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The difficulties of preserving seeds on Qomolangma.
B. China’s effort to preserve plant species with a seed bank.
C. The reasons why plant biodiversity is rapidly decreasing.
D. How seeds are stored at very low temperatures for a long time.
B 9. D 10. C 11. B
根据文章第二段“The country has set a seed bank, namely the Germplasm (种质) Bank of Wild Species (GBWS), located in an ordinary four-story building in a research institute in Kunming, Yunnan Province.(中国建立了一个种子库,即野生生物种质资源库(GBWS),位于云南省昆明市一家研究所的一栋普通四层建筑内)”可知,昆明的野生生物种质资源库位于一栋四层建筑里。
根据文章第四段“The fast loss of biodiversity and germplasm resources is the main reason for the establishment of seed banks around the world. Construction of the germplasm bank in Kunming started in 2004, and it was put into operation three years later.(生物多样性和种质资源的快速丧失是全球建立种子库的主要原因。昆明种质资源库于2004年开工建设,三年后投入使用)”可知,生物多样性和种质资源的快速丧失是全球建立种子库的主要原因,所以建立该种子库的主要目的是保护生物多样性。故选D项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第五段“Currently, seeds can only be accepted by the GBWS if they tick at least one of the three boxes: endangered, endemic (特有的) or “of economic importance”.目前,只有满足以下三个条件之一的种子才能被GBWS接受:濒危、特有或“具有经济重要性”)”可知,具有较高经济价值的种子符合收录标准,可被该种子库接受。故选C项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Chinese scientists have collected seeds of several plants at a height of about 6,200 meters above sea level on the world’s highest peak — Mount Qomolangma and will permanently preserve them in a place where seeds can be kept alive for as long as thousands of years.(中国科学家在珠穆朗玛峰海拔约6200米的地方采集了多种植物的种子,并计划在种子可以存活数千年的地方永久保存它们)”和最后一段““When a species is destroyed by natural disasters, we will activate these seeds and bring the species to life,” said Li Dezhu, director of the seed bank.(“当某个物种被自然灾害摧毁时,我们将激活这些种子,使该物种复活,”种子库主任Li Dezhu说)”可知,中国科学家在珠穆朗玛峰海拔约6200米的地方采集了多种植物的种子,用于当某个物种被自然灾害摧毁时激活这些种子,使该物种复活,可推理出文章主要介绍了中国通过建立种子库来保护植物物种的努力。故选B项。
D
In the age of AI, worries about its impact on the environment are snowballing. For example, asking ChatGPT a question uses ten times more energy than an old-fashioned search. The development of AI has also caused a big increase in greenhouse-gas emissions. Google’s emissions went up nearly 50% from 2019 to 2023. However, these concerns might be overstated. In fact, AI may be less energy-hungry than many people assume.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that the electricity used by data centres could become three times as much within five years. But at present, the 1.5% of global electricity consumption related to data centres mainly comes from things like streaming, social media and online shopping. Moreover, some of AI’s electricity use will help with greening the economy. AI is already helping improve the efficiency of electrical grids (电网), cut fuel use in shipping and spot invisible leaks of greenhouse gas.
Policymakers and industry leaders face the task of maximizing AI’s advantages while minimizing its climate effects. The best way would be for governments to set a proper price for carbon and let the market operate. But because a global carbon price remains a distant dream, focusing on other three measures are more down-to-earth.
The first is more openness. Starting in August 2026, the EU will require some AI developers to report how much energy they use in detail. That approach should be copied elsewhere. A second is to rethink how data centers operate. The IEA notes that being able to shift workloads between different data centers at different times could reduce stress and help balance energy grids. Third, technology companies must keep their promises about protecting the environment instead of depending on buying renewable-energy credits.
Doubling down on such approaches would help transform AI from climate suspect to climate hero.
12. What is the main concern about AI?
A. Its inability to reduce emissions. B. Its impact on social development.
C. Its shock on old-fashioned search. D. Its high-level energy consumption.
13. What can be inferred from the second paragraph?
A. AI’s environmental-friendly potential remains tested.
B. AI has a minor role in the current electricity consumption.
C. AI is currently the most effective way to reduce emissions.
D. The process of AI detecting gas leaking is easy to achieve.
14. Which solution is more realistic to minimize AI’s climate effects?
A. Fixing a proper price for carbon. B. Allowing the market to operate.
C. Reconsidering data center operations. D. Purchasing renewable-energy credits.
15. Which of the following is the best title for text?
A. AI and Climate: A Battle of Balancing. B. Climate: A Victi m or a Beneficiary of AI?
C. AI’s next target: Environmental Protection. D. AI: A Threat or a Contributor to the Climate?
D 13. B 14. C 15. D
根据第一段“For example, asking ChatGPT a question uses ten times more energy than an old-fashioned search. The development of AI has also caused a big increase in greenhouse-gas emissions.(例如,向ChatGPT询问一个问题比传统的搜索多消耗十倍的能量。人工智能的发展也导致了温室气体排放的大幅增加。)”可知,人们主要担心AI的高能耗问题,故选D项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that the electricity used by data centres could become three times as much within five years. But at present, the 1.5% of global electricity consumption related to data centres mainly comes from things like streaming and social media.(国际能源署(IEA)预测,数据中心的用电量将在五年内增加三倍。但目前,与数据中心相关的1.5%的全球电力消耗主要来自流媒体和社交媒体。)”可知国际能源署预测未来五年数据中心用电可能变为三倍,但目前数据中心占全球电力消耗的1.5%主要来自流媒体和社交媒体等,言外之意是目前AI在数据中心电力消耗方面作用较小,故选B项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The best way would be for governments to set a proper price for carbon and let the market operate. But because a global carbon price remains a distant dream, focusing on other three measures are more down-to-earth.(最好的办法是政府为碳设定一个合适的价格,让市场运作。但是,由于全球碳价格仍然是一个遥远的梦想,因此关注其他三个措施更为实际。)”以及第四段“A second is to rethink how data centers operate.(第二是重新思考数据中心的运作方式。)”
文章第一段“In the age of AI, worries about its impact on the environment are snowballing.(在人工智能时代,对其对环境影响的担忧正在滚雪球。)”指出人们担忧人工智能对环境的影响,如高能耗和增加温室气体排放等,第二段“AI is already helping improve the efficiency of electrical grids(电网), cut fuel use in shipping and spot invisible leaks of greenhouse gas.(人工智能已经帮助提高了电网的效率,减少了航运中的燃料使用,并发现了看不见的温室气体泄漏。)” AI: A Threat or a Contributor to the Climate?(人工智能:对气候的威胁还是贡献?)

Every child hopes for gifts for Christmas. But it seemed that my family didn’t have enough money to buy me the bike that I’d wanted for Christmas. After supper was over on Christmas eve, I sat at the table, feeling sorry for myself.
It was cold outside. Soon Dad came back. “Come on, Eric,” he said. “Put on warm clothes. It’s cold out tonight.” I was really upset then. Not only was I not getting the bike for Christmas, but now Dad was dragging me out in the cold. But anyway, I got up and followed him.
Outside, in front of the house, our old truck was ready. The cold was already biting at me. Dad went into the woodshed (柴房) and came out with an armload of wood. “Dad,” I asked, “what are you doing?” He said, “I passed by Ms. Black’s house today. She is a single mother of three kids. Her eldest son, 8-year-old Robert, was out digging around in the woodpile trying to find a few chips. He was just wearing an old thin shirt, trembling with cold. They’re out of wood, Eric.” That was all he said and then he turned and went back into the room for a big ham. He handed them to me and told me to put them in the truck and wait. When he returned, he was carrying a bag of something in his hand. “What’s in the bag?” I asked. “Coats. They’re out of warm clothes. I got the children a little candy too. It just wouldn’t be Christmas without a little candy.”
We drove two miles to Ms. Black’s house. We stopped at the gate and unloaded the wood, then we took the other things to the door. Ms. Black opened the door and let us in. The room felt cold. Such a small fire could hardly give off any heat at all. So Dad asked me to add more wood to the fire.

1.续写词数应为150左右;
I soon made the fire burn brighter and everyone’s spirits rose high.

On the way back home, Dad turned to me and began to explain about the bike I had longed for.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I soon made the fire burn brighter and everyone’s spirits rose high. The room felt warm now. The kids started giggling when Dad handed them each a piece of candy and a coat. Ms. Black looked with a smile. “The children and I have been praying that angels would come to our help and here you come,” she said with tears running down her face. Dad took each of the kids in his big arms and gave them a hug before we left. Out on the truck I felt a warmth that came from deep within and I didn’t even notice the cold.
On the way back home, Dad turned to me and began to explain about the bike I had longed for. It turned out that he and Mom had finally saved enough money to buy that bike for me. On his way to buy me the gift, Dad saw little Robert out of his house with an old thin shirt. “Son, I spent the money saved for your bike buying coats for the children. I hope you understand,” he said. I understood very well. Now the bike seemed very low on my list of priorities. Dad had given me the look on Ms. Black’s face and the joyful smiles of her three children.

When I showed my mother a copy she noticed her Chinese name in the acknowledgments and said in Mandarin with a shaking voice, “Now I know you truly love me.” I wish it hadn’t taken this long to find a way to tell her.
A Sensitive. B. Sympathetic.
C. Grateful. D. Incomprehensible.
6. What motivated the author to dig into her family history?
D. She was grateful for the author’s efforts to understand her.

C AI is currently the most effective way to reduce emissions.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
I soon made the fire burn brighter and everyone’s spirits rose high.
