I remember drawing clothes and shoes when I was eight, and I made my first skirt aged nine. Then three years ago, I began making shoes, and I now spend my free time doing that. I became interested in making shoes when my cousin told me about an online shoe-making course. I immediately asked my mum to book me on a four-day course in London to see if I liked it, and then I did a ten-day course there in the summer holidays. I love the courses. On the longer one, I made four pairs of shoes! I couldn’t believe it. The teachers were excellent. That’s what was best about the classes. They made us work really hard but they wanted all their students to have fun, too. I’ve made about 15 pairs of shoes now. At the moment I’m making a pair of trainers (运动鞋) using an old pair of jeans, but I’ve used all kinds of different things before, from old leather handbags to old cotton dresses! Making shoes has changed my plans for the future. I know now that I want to be a designer, but not a shoe designer. I’ve decided I’ll do home design. I’ve designed lots of shoes and also some clothes, so I’d like to try something new. 1.What do we know about the writer from the first two paragraphs? A.She began making shoes three years ago. It’s debatable as to which inspired her dream of becoming a space scientist more, but one thing is for sure: the passion Maggie had for space sparked a career and helped her overcome her dyslexia The now celebrated space scientist, mechanical engineer, and science communicator grew up bouncing from one area of the country to another, the child of two Nigerian immigrants who divorced when she was young. Diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of eight, Maggie faced significant challenges in traditional learning environments. Dyslexia often made reading and writing difficult, and she was sometimes looked down upon by classmates. Despite these obstacles, her passion for science and space exploration shone through. Rather than focusing on the limitations dyslexia imposed, Maggie discovered its advantages: her brain was good at visualization and problem-solving, enabling her to think creatively and approach challenges from unique perspectives. Her journey to success wasn’t easy. After overcoming early academic struggles, she went on to earn degrees in physics and mechanical engineering. Today, she is well-known for her work in space science, including the development of satellites and instruments used to explore the universe. Her contributions to science are widely recognized, and she has become an inspiring role model for young people, particularly those facing learning difficulties. Her story is a powerful reminder that dyslexia is not a limitation but a different way of processing the world, one that can lead to extraordinary achievements. Maggie Aderin-Pocock’s life and career prove that facing what makes you different can turn challenges into strengths, inspiring others to see the potential in their own unique abilities. 14.What was the main factor that drove Maggie Aderin-Pocock’s career? Passage 5 Most of us travel with our parents as children and teenagers. For some of us, during the travel, our parents are our inspiration. These trips are normally full of rental cars, beaches, and hamburgers. My family would go to Galiano island every summer, and we did a week in Mexico in 1995, and then we did two different trips to Anaheim to experience the magic of Disney. Universal, and Knott’s Berry Farm. But all of these are childhood experiences and memories. I didn’t really truly travel with my parents until I was an adult when I got the chance to travel with mom and dad. I was in New Zealand for a study abroad, and invited my parents to come down for a 2-week road trip around the North Island and then 10 days in Fiji. Why not? They said, as if this was something they were invited to do every day. I didn’t really plan anything, but my mom had done some reading and I knew some highlights after living in New Zealand for 5 months. I had booked a hotel for their first night in Auckland. The only other preparation I had done was to book a rental car. My parents immediately reached an agreement that I should be the driver, for the whole two weeks. The main reason for this, understandably, was that neither of them had ever been in a country where you drive on the left-hand side of the road and on the right-hand side of the car. This led to me driving my parents around the entire North Island of New Zealand for 2 weeks! But still, everybody had jobs. Dad had the maps, and mom had the guidebook, and I just took them where they told me to go. Sometimes, I was asked who I was traveling with. When I said “my parents”, the response was, “Ohhh, older people.” In fact, I have some tips on travelling with parents happily. 18.Which does the underlined word “inspiration” in Paragraph. 1 mean? D.The advice on outing with parents. Passage 6 Jim was a young man in his early twenties who was studying to be a carpenter. They also made fun of him a great deal but he never got angry with them and would only laugh. But Jim’s one great shortcoming (缺点) was that he could never tell a lie, no matter how hard he tried, not even a little one. He used to stand in front of the mirror and practise lying while looking himself in the eyes at the same time. But as soon as he saw his face starting to go red he had to look away. One morning, however, he didn’t feel like going to work because he had been to a party the night before and it hadn’t ended till the early hours of the morning. And so far the first time in his life he decided to take the day off. He rang his boss, pretending to be a woman. “I’m afraid Jim can’t come to work today. He isn’t feeling very well.” Poor Jim was thankful that his boss couldn’t see him just at that moment because his hands were trembling (发抖) and his face was bright red. “Thank you for letting me know,” said Mr. Woods, his boss, and then just as he was about to hang up, he said, “just a moment, madam, who’s speaking.” “Oh!” he stammered (口吃的说), and going all out for making a voice like a woman, he cried in a voice: “This is my mother speaking!” 22.What do we know about Jim? Today when I look back, I still miss my mother very much, but I know that I will live. My mother was a strong mother, who had the biggest heart. My mother was an angel walking on the earth. However, Mr. Clark, Peter’s boss, was concerned and thought that it was time for him to retire. “You don’t have a choice here, Peter,” he said seriously. “We don’t want to invite any risk to the children who take your bus every day. We need a replacement at this stage.” “But I have a perfect record,” argued Peter. “You know, for an elderly man like me, my job is the only thing that keeps me alive. I want to keep my job. ” “Would you take responsibility if something bad happened to those children?” Mr. Clark said. Peter thought it over, and very reluctantly, he gave in to Mr. Clark’s request. Peter decided to retire a week later. His retirement day approached pretty soon. The day before his last day, Peter was dropping off the kids at his first stop when he looked out of the window and saw a lady on the road who had fainted (昏厥). He asked the kids not to leave the bus and got down to help the woman. Just when he finished, he heard screams behind him. The children were looking out of the window and screaming, “Fire! Fire! Help!” “How could that have happened?” Peter was shaking in fear. With trembling hands, Peter dialed 911 and rushed to help the children. Peter covered himself with his jacket and burst into the flaming bus. He took the children out of the burning bus one by one. Thankfully, the firefighters arrived soon and helped Peter, saving all students. The next day, Peter saw the entire school gathered in front of his home. Kahlo suffered from ill health as a child after catching polio (小儿麻痹症) at age of 6, which made her right leg shorter and thinner than the left. Before her painting career, she aimed for a career in natural sciences, but her dreams were ruined by a serious accident, which caused her pain and illness for the rest of her life. She was paralyzed for three months, alone and lonely. Armed with a few brushes, a range of oil paints and special easel (画架) that allowed her to paint while still in bed, she created some beautiful pieces. Her artwork is sought after by fans and art collectors for high prices, the highest being eight million. Kahlo married Diego Rivera, a famous Mexican artist. They once divorced in 1939, but remarried in 1940. Frida Kahlo once said,” I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality.” This perfectly describes her painting style, one drawn from her personal pain and tragedies. She is a self-taught artist known for her self-portraits. Frida Kahlo’s self-portrait, Girl with Necklace, has resurfaced after 60 years of it being hidden from the public eye. This discovery of Kahlo’s painting is significant, as only ten perfect of her work is available in America due to complex and strict export laws in Mexico. Then, at 20, I was introduced to photographer David Liittschwager, who hired me to help him with a magazine assignment on marine life. David’s assignment was to document the amazing biodiversity found in the ocean. My role was to collect specimens for him to photograph. Every night, I would cast a floating lamp. Like moths drawn to a flame, mysterious creatures would emerge from the depths in search of this light. I’d then set up aquariums to house them as they waited for David to take their shot. Those evenings made me feel as if I were on another planet. I had never imagined such strange life-forms could exist in our oceans. But I didn’t grasp the true magic of what was in front of me until I saw the photographs David took. The biggest surprise was his image of a baby flounder. I caught this fish by accident. Only later did I notice its two tiny eyeballs staring back at me. But David’s photograph of this flounder revealed a universe of detail that even my eager eyes had missed. His macro lens magnified its ribs (肋骨). The lightning-fast exposure froze its motion. A precisely aimed light released the rainbow hidden in its skin. And the black background removed all distractions to focus our attention on the quiet beauty at hand. Years after that project, I was snorkeling (潜泳) on a shallow reef. Out of the darkness, another baby flounder emerged and settled on my mask. This time I knew what to look for. Before working for David, I had assumed the goal of photography was simply to reproduce an observation so that others could share the same experience. It had never occurred to me that photography could expand our visual perception and therefore teach us to look at the world from new perspectives. 82.What was the author’s role in the magazine assignment? A.Photographing the marine life. B.Documenting the amazing biodiversity. C.Building an aquarium for marine research. D.Attracting and gathering species of marine life. 83.What surprised the author about the image of a baby flounder? A.The advanced techniques of lighting. B.The strange appearance of the small fish. C.The accurate display of its comprehensive details. D.The unexpected effect of background processing. 84.What can we infer about the author from the text? A.He launched a local snorkeling project. B.He achieved his dream by taking up photography. C.The project motivated him to start ocean research. D.The experience changed his view of photography. 85.What is the true magic of photography? A.To record an observation result. B.To help people see the world anew. C.To share one’s specific experience. D.To reveal visible wonders of the world. (Passage 1) 推理判断题 需根据上下文推断隐含信息 “What’s the writer’s purpose?” (Passage 1) 词义猜测题 根据语境猜测生词或短语含义 “blush” (Passage 6) 意为“脸红” 主旨大意题 考查文章的中心思想或写作目的 “What is the best title for the text?” (Passage 3) 人物分析题 分析人物的性格、情感或行为动机 “How did Spud feel when he was refused?” (Passage 15) 写作意图题 分析作者或文中人物的目的 “Why did the author write this passage?” 忽略否定词 如 not、never 等词被忽略 “visitors will not see…” Passage 1 I’ve always liked designing things. While most students crowded around the athletes, Rudolph noticed a boy sitting alone in the cafeteria. The boy, Bo Paske, a sixth grader with autism (自闭症), often ate lunch by himself. Without hesitation, Rudolph asked, “Can I sit with you?” Their simple pizza lunch was captured (拍摄) in a photo that Bo’s mother, Leah Paske, later shared on Facebook. In her post, Leah revealed her daily worries about Bo’s loneliness. “Autism might protect him from noticing stares or missed birthday parties,” she wrote, “but my heart aches when he eats alone.” The photo quickly went viral, receiving over 14,000 shares and national media attention. Reporters interviewed the pair, and Bo’s story inspired countless discussions about autism and kindness. When asked about his act, Rudolph said, “I just wanted to be kind. Everyone deserves respect”. Bo described the experience as “like sitting on a rainbow” Rudolph signed Bo’s lunchbox, turning an ordinary school day into a lifelong memory. Years later, Bo still keeps the signed lunchbox as a cherished reminder of that special moment. Leah later wrote: “For one day, I didn’t worry if my son ate alone. A.The stars in the sky. B.The passion for space. C.The British television series. D.The early academic struggles. 15.What challenge did Maggie face due to her dyslexia? A.Lack of interest in study. B.Difficulties in visualization. C.Disrespect from her classmates. D.Limitations in problem-solving. 16.After Maggie overcame her early academic struggles, she _______. A.became a fashion model B.acquired degrees in different fields C.quit her pursuit of universe exploration D.fought against the development of satellites 17.What is the author’s main purpose in writing this passage? A.To introduce a scientist’s research. B.To discuss the disadvantages of dyslexia. C.To stress the importance of space exploration. D.To encourage people to face difficulties bravely. 根据第一段中的“It’s debatable as to which inspired her dream of becoming a space scientist more, but one thing is for sure: the passion Maggie had for space sparked a career and helped her overcome her dyslexia (读写困难). 1 mean? A.Cooks. B.Guides. C.Drivers. D.Translators. 19.Why did the parents let the writer drive the car in New Zealand? A.They were not used to the driving rules. B.They were afraid of the mountain roads. C.They were too old to drive for a long time. D.They were busy reading the maps and guidebook. 20.What is the best title for the passage? A.Drive on the Way. B.Travel with Parents. C.Enjoy New Zealand. D.Remember the Childhood 21.What will the writer share next? A.The holidays with parents. B.The memory in Fiji as a child. C.The scene during the road trip. D.The advice on outing with parents. 根据第四段“But still, everybody had jobs. Christy didn’t draw back. She needed this job. Hurricane Katrina had destroyed her savings along with her house. But the retired PE teacher wasn’t discouraged. “I’m a tough nut,” she said. “And I’ve taught middle schoolers.” And Andrew’s outburst? It was music to her ears. When Andrew was diagnosed with autism (孤独症)at 8, his mom, Cindy, applied for an attendant to care for him through Volunteers of America. Even so, it was eight years before they were matched with Christy. In the meantime, Cindy would do anything for her son. Christy saw the problem right away. Andrew wouldn’t take a step without his mother’s permission. “You have to let him fail,” she told the family. “It’s the only way he’s going to learn to be able to do things on his own.” No longer would Cindy write Andrew’s papers for him. His younger brother wouldn’t help him use the computer. Christy wouldn’t be helping him with homework, either. Andrew complained. Loudly at times. But then Andrew would come home from school, get a snack and start on his homework. He saw that Christy really was there for him. She wouldn’t do his papers for him. But she showed him how to get organised. And she coached him on how to deal with difficulties or ask his teachers for help. “She understood autism,” Andrew says. “It turned out she was really nice.” Best of all, once his work was done, Christy would take him to the bookstore or to the movies or out to eat his favourite food. One step at a time, Andrew gained independence. He graduated from high school and entered community college. And he stopped trying to fire Christy. Last spring Andrew moved into his own apartment. He’s working toward an associate’s degree in video game design. This past summer, he was a counselor at a sleep-away camp for kids with autism. He’s studying to get his learner’s permit to drive. At 25, he says life has never been better: “I’ve been blessed.” 38.What does paragraph 2 say about Christy? A.She took Andrew’s outburst very seriously. B.She came to care for Andrew out of sympathy. C.She suffered great losses from a natural disaster. D.She once taught music in a middle school. 39.What was probably Christy’s teaching belief as Andrew’s personal care attendant? 【答案】82.D 83.C 84.D 85.B 【导语】这是一篇记叙文。文章主要介绍了作者在协助摄影师David Liittschwager拍摄海洋生物的过程中,改变了对摄影的看法,认识到摄影不仅是记录,还能拓展视觉感知。 82.细节理解题。根据第二段的“My role was to collect specimens for him to photograph.
