In China, the Lei Feng story is well known. His spirit has been passed down by many people with cultural differences.
Lugazo is a 24-year-old African boy. In 2017, he came to China to study. After arriving at the railway station in Wuhan, he was helpless because he had no idea which way to go, and he couldn’t speak any Chinese. A passenger sitting next to him on the train volunteered to take him to the university. The kind man was the first “Lei Feng” he met.
The experience encouraged Lugazo a lot. Several months later, he joined the university’s Volunteer Team and was given a red jacket with Lei Feng’s photo on it. The next year, he did voluntary work at the Wuhan Railway Station. “Once, after I helped an old woman, her 5-year-old grandson came up to me and said ‘Thank you, Lei Feng!’. That really touched me,” he said.
Another of his favorite memories was teaching English to children in a school in Hubei. Many of their parents worked in other cities, so the children lived with their grandparents. The children were quiet and seldom expressed themselves. Lugazo remembers a 10-year-old boy who was always alone in one corner. “I took him to the teachers’ office. We played games and became friends.” At first, the boy hardly took part in games during class, but after a week, he was taking part just like the others. The change made Lugazo happy.

Li Hua shook his head and the waiter understood that he didn’t want tea. So he took it away and brought him a glass of milk. Li Hua shook his head again. He was very hungry then and looked sad. He was just going to leave the restaurant when another man came in. When this man saw the waiter, he put his hands on his stomach. Passage C
“No building comes without carvings (雕刻), and carvings make buildings more valuable,” goes an old saying in Minnan (闽南), an area in southern Fujian Province. The saying refers to brick carvings, which were an important feature of the old red brick buildings in the area.
The carvings were once commonly found on either side of the main entrance of Minnan’s buildings. However, with development, the number of ancient red brick buildings has decreased, and Minnan’s brick carvings have gradually faded from sight, said Wu Jiandong, a young master brick carver from Fujian’s Quanzhou City.
The 42-year-old has learned the traditional technique and now combines it with modern tastes to develop his own style of brick carving. Wu said that he hoped to be able to help the traditional craft continue through innovation.
“Market demands have changed in recent years, and so has our thinking,” Wu said. “We must add modern elements to help pass down and develop traditional crafts.”
People in Minnan love tea, so Wu created a series of carved brick tea decorations, including tea plates, cup holders, pot holders and other items. They have been warmly received by local people and foreign visitors.
Earlier this year, a pendant (挂件) decorated with a swallow, tail ridge (屋脊) and a bright moon was bought by an overseas Chinese man from the Philippines. The customer told Wu that he would hang the pendant in his office as a reminder of the architecture and the moon of his hometown.
Because of the market’s recognition of his work, Wu will be able to pass down the craft and further develop his pieces, and the popularity of short videos has also given him new hopes of promoting (推广) Minnan brick carvings.
The art form originated during the Song Dynasty and flourished (繁荣) during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is now an important part of national cultural heritage.
33. The writer’s purpose in mentioning the saying at the beginning is ________.
A. to introduce an area in southern Fujian Province
B. to give advice on developing brick carvings
C. to show the importance of brick carvings in Minnan
D. to attract more people to visit Minnan
34. The underlined word “innovation” in the passage probably means ________.
A. spread B. carving C. imagination D. creation
35. We can infer from the sixth paragraph that ________.
A. Most of Wu’s customers came from abroad
B. brick carvings become symbols of homesickness for overseas Chinese
C. the pendant of brick carving becomes popular
D. Wu’s brick pieces are warmly received all over the world
36. What is probably the best title for this passage?
A. An Artist with His Own Style of Brick Carvings
B. The Ancient Red Brick Buildings in Minnan
C. Minnan’s Brick Carving Art Is Coming Back
D. The History of Minnan’s Brick Carvings
Passage D
Chinese cartoon has been a success abroad with Scissor Seven, the first Chinese cartoon to be shown worldwide on Netflix. The show has reached viewers in more than 190 countries, in about 30 languages. Its success may come from its humor, touching stories, amazing visuals and beautiful music.
The cartoon is about an assassin (刺客) called “Wu Liuqi”, also known as “Seven” in English. He works as a hairdresser who is trying to get back his lost memories. The story is about love and forgiveness (宽恕). “This is a powerful idea that connects with viewers everywhere. I believe a successful work should express shared values that touch the viewers in different parts of the world,” said Zou, the director of the cartoon.
Zou has also added many local cultural symbols into the cartoon stories including Chinese-style buildings, Chinese kung fu, folk music, traditional clothing and so on. They help foreign viewers to have a better understanding of China. “We were impressed by the production quality of Scissor Seven, as well as its special storytelling style, which we believe will be loved by our cartoon fans around the world,” says the director of Netflix.

Passage A
In China, the Lei Feng story is well known.
These days, anyone can be described as a “Lei Feng” if they would like to help others. More and more people like Lugazo give warmth to people in need.

根据第四段“The children were quiet and seldom expressed themselves... a 10-year-old boy who was always alone... At first, the boy hardly took part in games during class, but after a week, he was taking part just like the others.”

Li Hua saw how the other person easily showed he was hungry by touching his stomach, and then got a big meal quickly. Li Hua thought this was a good idea.
C 34. D 35. B 36. C

根据第一段“No building comes without carvings, and carvings make buildings more valuable,”和“The saying refers to brick carvings, which were an important feature of the old red brick buildings in the area.”
根据第三段“The 42-year-old has learned the traditional technique and now combines it with modern tastes to develop his own style of brick carving.”和第四段“We must add modern elements to help pass down and develop traditional crafts.”
根据第六段“Earlier this year, a pendant decorated with a swallow, tail ridge and a bright moon was bought by an overseas Chinese man from the Philippines. The customer told Wu that he would hang the pendant in his office as a reminder of the architecture and the moon of his hometown.”
Passage D
Chinese cartoon has been a success abroad with Scissor Seven the first Chinese cartoon to be shown worldwide on Netflix.
Zou has also added many local cultural symbols into the cartoon stories, including Chinese-style buildings, Chinese kung fu, folk music, traditional clothing and so on. They help foreign viewers to have a better understanding of China. “We were impressed by the production quality of Scissor Seven, as well as its special storytelling style, which we believe will be loved by our cartoon fans around the world,” says the director of Netflix.
However, there were many challenges. According to Zou, the show is a comedy, but some humor is based on the Chinese language and so may get lost in translation. This required their team to make some adjustments so that more people could understand the jokes.
Chinese cartoons like Ne Zha and Scissor Seven have attracted international attention in recent years. However, Zou pointed out that China’s cartoons still have challenges to deal with. “The popularity of Scissor Seven on Netflix marks an important step for our global business.
根据第一段“Its success may come from its humor, touching stories, amazing visuals and beautiful music.”
根据第四段“the show is a comedy”和第一段“Its success may come from its humor, touching stories, amazing visuals and beautiful music.” 故选A。
根据最后一段“However, Zou pointed out that China’s cartoons still have challenges to deal with. ‘The popularity of Scissor Seven on Netflix marks an important step for our global business. We hope we can make more high-quality cartoons for the world viewers,’ said Zou.”
Do you find it hard to say no whenever someone asks you for help? Do you feel guilty (内疚的) when you have to tell people that you really can’t help them? If your answer is yes, you may be a “people-pleaser” (老好人).
Being friendly and helpful is a good thing. ____41____ However, trying to please others even at the cost of your own happiness can make you feel stressed. Here are some steps to help you stop being a people-pleaser.
____42____ You can tell others that you are only available for a certain period of time. You can’t be there all the time.
When someone asks you for help, tell him or her that you need some time to think about it. You can use this time to ask yourself: ____43____ How much time will it take? In this way, you’ll be better able to decide if it’s something you have the desire (意愿) and time to do.
Some people always try to please others because they have little confidence in themselves. If so, you can try positive self-talk. ____44____ You don’t have to give away your time and energy to do things that don’t bring you joy.
____45____ You can still do good things—but on your own terms.
A. Do you really want to do this?
B. It helps you build lasting friendships.
C. To start with, be clear about what you are willing to take on.
D. Stopping being a people-pleaser doesn’t mean you have to give up being kind and helpful.
E. Remind yourself that you have dreams too.
B 42. C 43. A 44. E 45. D
根据上文“Being friendly and helpful is a good thing.”
根据上文“Here are some steps to help you stop being a people-pleaser.”和下文“You can tell others that you are only available for a certain period of time.”
根据上文“You can use this time to ask yourself:”和下文“How much time will it take?” 故选A。
根据上文“Some people always try to please others because they have little confidence in themselves. If so, you can try positive self-talk.”和下文“You don’t have to give away your time and energy to do things that don’t bring you joy.”
根据上文内容和下文“You can still do good things—but on your own terms.”

根据“This experience always...me that helping others is sometimes helping ourselves.”
