Germany may be famous for its wealth of history and culture, but it also housed some of Europe’s most wild and wonderful landscapes.
Jasmund National Park
It lies on the west coast of the offshore island of Rugen. This UNESCO-protected site is the smallest of Germany’s national parks. It is here that painter Caspar David Friedrich found himself inspired to create one of his masterpieces, Chalk cliffs on Rugen, in 1818. Here long trails can take you all the way to the Rugen coastline, where white-sand beaches and blue waters wait.
Berchtesgaden National Park
Berchtesgaden is one of Germany’s oldest and most beautiful conservation areas. Trails go in and out of the forest, leading you along the bunks of glassy lakes. The more adventurous visitors may choose paragliding (滑翔伞运动) from Mount Jenner mid they can fly over 1,800 meters. Back on the ground, a network of more than 150 miles of walking trails twist through the forest.
Southern Black Forest Nature Park
The highland areas, with views over Switzerland and France, are a good place for food-lovers. Activities in the park range from hiking and fishing to mountain biking, while the slower travelers will enjoy the trails for an escape from everyday life.
The Bliesgau Biosphere
This place is home to almost half of all German orchid (兰花) species. The grasslands spread for miles, drawing in different butterflies. Thanks to its comfortable climate, this is a region of sustainable (可持续的) development. In fact, this park is an example of fanning done right and offers a wealth of agricultural know-how to anyone eager to learn.

B
I remember opening my iPad one day in fifth grade after a silly conversation with my cousin about scary story ideas. Hours later I completed my first short story. Since then, I’ve written many stories, short and long. But also, since then, I’ve read more and noticed just how well people my age could write. Since then, I also felt less and less willing to share my work:what if my writing isn’t as good as everybody else's? What started off as something creative that I could share with friends turned into competition changed by feelings of competence. Oftentimes, hobbies begin as something just for fun. But eventually, what was once fun now contributes to feelings of stress and inadequacy. I have plenty of memories of thinking I was going to pick up something new and stick with it, whether it be playing the piano, or drawing. But there is always a part of me that expects myself to just magically be good at all of those things. And when I’m not, the enjoyment tapers off as, slowly, I think mediocrity(平庸) isn’t acceptable anymore.
Writing is the only hobby that I have repeatedly come back to despite dropping it constantly. I can see the growth in my writing all these years, but the expectations to be better and better is never satisfied. This is why I drop writing for months at a time. This feeling of a hobby becoming, for a lack of better word, a chore, lowers the satisfaction of said hobby.
But hobbies are there to give you a breath of fresh air from having to excel at everything, from academics to your occupation. We must accept that it is okay to just suck at an activity but still doing it because it brings you joy. There is a balance between joy and expectations, either set by others or by ourselves.
4. What does the author do in the first paragraph?
A. He challenges a tradition. B. He relates an experience.
C. He envisions a coming trend. D. He compares varied hobbies.
5. Which can best replace the underlined phrase “tapers off” in paragraph 1?
A. Thins out. B. Tops out. C. builds up. D. Spreads around.
6. Why does the author drop writing constantly?
A. He is inadequate for it. B. He prefers mediocrity.
C. He equates joy with achievement. D. He receives bitter comment.
7. What message does the passage convey?
A. Mediocrity is the key to enjoyment.
B. A hobby shared is a hobby squared.
C. Excellence ensures academic success.
D. Enjoyment outweighs excellence in hobbies.

A large body of research has been developed in recent years to explain many aspects of willpower. Most of the researchers exploring self-control do so with an obvious goal in mind: How can willpower be strengthened? If willpower is truly a limited resource, as the research suggests, what can be done to make it stay strong?
Avoiding temptation (诱惑) is an effective method for maintaining self-control, which is called the “out of sight, out of mind” principle. One recent study, for instance, found office workers less attracted to candy in the desk drawer than that on top of their desks, in plain sight.
The research suggesting that we possess a limited reservoir of self-control raises a troubling question. When we face too many temptations, are we to fail? Not necessarily. Researchers don’t believe that one’s willpower is ever completely exhausted. Rather, people appear to hold some willpower in reserve, saved for future demands. The right motivation allows us to tap into those reserves, allowing us to carry on even when our self-control strength has been run down. High motivation might help overcome weakened willpower — at least to a point.
Willpower may also be made less vulnerable (脆弱) to being exhausted in the first place. Researchers who study self-control often describe it as being like a muscle that gets tired with heavy use. But there is another aspect to the muscle comparison, they say. While muscles become exhausted by exercise in the short term, they are strengthened by regular exercise in the long term. Similarly, regular practices of self-control may improve willpower strength.
The evidence from willpower-exhaustion studies also suggests that making a list of resolutions on New Year’s Eve is the worst possible approach. Being exhausted in one area can reduce willpower in other areas, so it makes more sense to focus on a single goal at a time. In other words, don’t try to quit smoking, adopt a healthy diet and start a new exercise plan at the same time. Taking goals one by one is a better approach. Once a good habit is in place, Baumeister says, you’ll no longer need to draw on your willpower to maintain the behavior. Eventually healthy habits will become routine, and won’t require making decisions at all.
8 From the studies in the passage we learn that ________.
A. people have unlimited self-control B. high motivation ensures one’s success
C. people tend to keep some willpower in store D. temptations help to reserve willpower
9. The underlined phrase “tap into” in Paragraph 3 most probably means ________.
A. make use of B. run out of C. get rid of D. take charge of
10. The author compares self-control to muscles ________.
A. to prove the long-term effect of willpower
B. to show the significance of regular exercise
C. to argue that self-control can be easily used up
D. to explain the benefits of practicing self-control
11. To develop a good habit, which of the following does the author prefer?
A. “I will give up dessert and do exercise.” B. “I will set three goals this new semester.”
C. “I will read an English novel every month.” D. “I will keep myself from any temptation.”

The Importance of a Balanced Lifestyle
In today’s fast-paced world, maintaining a balanced lifestyle has become more crucial than ever. A balanced lifestyle encompasses various aspects such as a healthy diet, regular exercise, sufficient sleep, and time for leisure and social activities.
On one hand, a healthy diet provides the necessary nutrients for our body to function optimally. It gives us the energy to carry out our daily tasks and helps prevent various diseases. Consuming a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins is essential. Without a proper diet, we may feel fatigued and be more susceptible to illnesses.
Regular exercise is equally important. It not only keeps our body fit but also improves our mental well-being. Physical activity releases endorphins, which are known as "feel-good" hormones. These endorphins can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Whether it’s going for a jog, practicing yoga, or playing a sport, finding an exercise routine that suits us is vital.
Sufficient sleep is often overlooked but is a fundamental part of a balanced lifestyle. During sleep, our body repairs and rejuvenates itself. Lack of sleep can lead to a decline in cognitive abilities, decreased productivity, and mood swings. Most adults require seven to eight hours of sleep per night to function at their best.
In addition to physical health, having time for leisure and social activities is essential for our overall well-being. Hobbies and interests allow us to relax and unwind, while social interactions with friends and family provide a support system and a sense of belonging. Engaging in activities such as reading, painting, or going to the movies can enrich our lives and reduce stress.
In conclusion, a balanced lifestyle is not a luxury but a necessity. By taking care of our physical and mental health and making time for the things we enjoy, we can lead a more fulfilling and productive life.
12. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The importance of a healthy diet. B. The benefits of regular exercise.
C. The necessity of a balanced lifestyle. D. The significance of sufficient sleep.
13. Why is a healthy diet important?
A. It makes us look good. B. It provides energy and prevents diseases.
C. It is a trendy lifestyle choice. D. It helps us sleep better.
14. What does regular exercise do for our mental well-being?
A. It makes us more intelligent. B. It reduces stress and anxiety.
C. It improves our memory. D. It gives us more confidence.
15. Why is having time for leisure and social activities important?
A. It helps us make more money. B. It allows us to relax and have a support system.
C. It makes us more popular. D. It improves our physical health.

Gratitude, in its simplest form, is the act of feeling grateful for what you have. ___16___ If you are a person that practices gratitude regularly, you may have benefited a lot from that. Studies have shown that practicing gratitude can significantly boost people’s happiness and well-being, allowing them to live a more fulfilling life. So how can we practice gratitude? Here are ways that will set you in the right direction.
Keep a gratitude journal. Keep it simple and each day write 1 — 3 things you are grateful for in the morning and in the evening. ___17___ A lot of people focus on what they don’t have, or complain all day, making themselves upset. But when you focus on the positive, no matter how small, you attract more of the positive.
Don’t compare. It’s easy to compare ourselves to others and want what they have. When you do that, you’re not appreciating your own unique journey. We’re all on a different life path and we were born to stand out. ___18___
Flash a smile. A lot of people don’t smile these days, and often you have to be the one that initiates (发起) it. Smiling at someone can not only make you feel good, but also make their day, too. ___19___ While you’re at it, give compliments (问候), too.
___20___ It’s easy to focus on the negative of the past or worry about the future. If you can live in the moment and take in everything as they happen, you’ll discover joys that are often overlooked. There are joys of playing with your classmates in the playground, the conversation with your friends across the table and the smell of rain. Enjoy and embrace these moments.
A. Live in the present.
B So how often do you practice gratitude?
C. Do you know how to practice gratitude sincerely?
D. It will allow you to see more joy and beauty in your days.
E. Always discover the positive side of the people around you.
F. So smile more and watch how your day can instantly turn around.
G Value the path you take and be grateful for who you are and what you have.

语法填空
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Math and literature are probably two of the subjects that bring students headaches. However, scientists wonder ____36____ the beauty of math can be found in literary works. Once Upon a Prime: The Wondrous Connections between Mathematics and Literature, a book ____37____ (publish) recently by UK mathematician Sarah Hart, presents some interesting thoughts about “three”. She argues that the beauty of this number is indeed evident in many works of western literature and languages in general.
“Three” is the minimum number____38____which a two-dimensional shape can be defined. For example, three sticks can create a triangle, a stable structure. Many common phrases are in three words, such as “ready, set, go”. In stories, there are usually three main characters, such as Harry, Ron and Hermione in the Harry Potter series. For a series of novels, there are usually three books rather than four, according to Hart.
Why is it always the third son who ____39____ (behave) differently from his two older brothers, thus ____40____ (win) the princess? “The reason for this,” Hart explains, “is obvious. We require two ____41____ (repeat) to get to know the pattern, so that the breaking of the pattern in the third character can surprise or amuse us.”
Similarly, another study by researchers at the University of Vermont also connected math and storytelling. They analyzed more than 1,300 fiction books and arranged for 10,000 words from the books ____42____ (rate) by 50 participants on a happiness scale of 1 to 9. Then the ratings ____43____ (categorize) into different graphs, which showed how the readers’ emotions changed while reading. It turned out that each story fit ____44____ (perfect) into one of six basic graphs, a mathematical pattern.
“The idea _____45_____ one would have to choose between mathematics and literature is something of a tragedy,” Hart says, “The two fields are fundamentally linked”.

Mary was the art teacher for primary school students. On this particular day, she was guiding them through the process of drawing a scenic landscape. Akila yawned(打哈欠), clearly disinterested - drawing wasn’t her thing. A small group of students gathered around Tina, laughing at her unusual drawing: a sun sporting sunglasses and trees topped with ice cream cones.
Mary instructed Tina firmly but with unease, “Draw it the way I showed you.” As the lesson continued, doubt crept into Mary’s mind. Had the joy of creativity been overshadowed by the pressure to fit in? She scanned the room, observing her students’ faces – some concentrated, others uncertain. Akila’s disinterest was clear and Tina’s imaginative drawing had been met with ridicule instead of praise.
After class, Mary sat down with Tina, her tone softening, “Why did you draw the sun with sunglasses and the trees with ice creams?” she asked gently.
Tina’s eyes sparkled with a touch of rebellion (叛逆)-“I love ice cream, and I thought the sun would look cool with sunglasses. Why do we always have to draw like everyone else?”
Mary paused, her thoughts racing. Tina’s drawings weren’t just curious —they were a window into a world where imagination ruled, where rales could be bent into delightful chaos. Was she, by enforcing a rigid style, killing that very creativity?
The next morning, Mary walked into the classroom with a renewed sense of purpose. She placed a large sheet of paper in front of the class and announced a new project: they would create a collective(集体的)artwork titled “Our Dream World” with no rules. They were free to use colors, shapes, and patterns however they wished.
At first, the students hesitated, unsure of this newfound freedom. Akila leaned back, skeptical of what seemed like another pointless exercise. But Tina, her creativity no longer restricted, eagerly grabbed her crayons and began to draw with abandon. Then, Maya joined in. And then Michael...

根据文章第一段“I remember opening my iPad one day in fifth grade after a silly conversation with my cousin about scary story ideas. Hours later, I completed my first short story. Since then, I’ve written many stories, short and long. But also, since then, I’ve read more and noticed just how well people my age could write. Since then, I also felt less and less willing to share my work: what if my writing isn’t as good as everybody else’ s? What started off as something creative that I could share with friends turned into competition changed by feelings of competence.(我记得五年级的一天,在和表弟就恐怖故事创意进行了一次愚蠢的对话后,我打开了iPad。几个小时后,我完成了我的第一个短篇小说。从那以后,我写了很多短篇和长篇故事。但同样,从那以后,我读得更多,也注意到我这个年纪的人写作水平有多高。从那以后,我也越来越不愿意分享我的作品:如果我的写作不如其他人的好呢?原本是一件我可以和朋友分享的创意之事,却变成了因能力感而改变的竞争。)”可知,作者在第一段讲述了一段自己的经历。故选B项。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第一段“And when I’m not, the enjoyment … as, slowly, I think mediocrity(平庸) isn’t acceptable anymore(当我不是这样的时候,随着慢慢地,我认为平庸不再被接受,这种乐趣就……了)”可知,当作者认为自己做得不好,认为平庸不再被接受时,乐趣就会减少,所以“tapers off”意思是“减少”。故选A项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“Writing is the only hobby that I have repeatedly come back to despite dropping it constantly. I can see the growth in my writing all these years, but the expectations to be better and better is never satisfied. This is why I drop writing for months at a time. This feeling of a hobby becoming, for a lack of better word, a chore, lowers the satisfaction of said hobby.(写作是我唯一一个不断放下却又反复捡起的爱好。
根据文章最后一段“But hobbies are there to give you a breath of fresh air from having to excel at everything, from academics to your occupation. We must accept that it is okay to just suck at an activity but still doing it because it brings you joy. There is a balance between joy and expectations, either set by others or by ourselves(但爱好是为了让你在从学业到职业的各个方面都出类拔萃之余,能呼吸到新鲜空气。我们必须接受,在一项活动中表现不佳也没关系,只要它给你带来快乐。在快乐和期望之间有一个平衡,无论是别人设定的还是我们自己设定的)”可知,在一项活动中表现不佳也没关系,只要它给你带来快乐,可推理出文章主要传达的是在爱好中,快乐比优秀更重要。故选D项。

【答案】36. whether##if

38. with 39. behaves

Mary was the art teacher for primary school students. On this particular day, she was guiding them through the process of drawing a scenic landscape.

【答案】Paragraph 1: As the students worked. Mary observed them with curiosity. She noticed how Akila initially disinterested, had quietly chosen vibrant colors and was now blending them together to create a swirling sky filled with fantastical creatures that flew over a stone castle. Meanwhile, Tina was enthusiastically adding playful details to her section of the paper-a whimsical garden where flowers wore hats and creatures rested on the ice cream-topped trees. Mary felt a wave of relief washed over her. The room was alive with chatter and laughter, as Akila and Tina frequently exchanged ideas and inspired one another. Akila even leaned over to admire Tina’s ice cream trees and said, “That is mind-blowing!” It was wonderful to see them cooperate, their initial differences melting away in the warmth of shared creativity.
Paragraph 2: Mary stood back and surveyed the creation. The enomious canvas had transformed into a magnificent portrayal of each student’s imagination, forming a breathtaking landscape that reflected their individuality yet spoke to their collective spirit. Mary felt a sense of pride swell within her; she realized that in letting go of rigid structures, her students gave their painting an unrealistic but dream-like quality. Akila, Tina, and the rest of the class had not only embraced their own creative paths but had also nurtured each other’s ideas. They were thrilled, “It was the best painting ever! We should definitely hang it on the wall!” Inspired by the moment, Mary decided to host an exhibition of their dream world, inviting parents and other classes to admire the beauty of imagination unleashed in her classroom.
