The UR (University of Rochester) Libraries’ event, “Find it For Free”, held on January 21, provided students with information on finding low-to-no-cost course materials. Librarian Eloise Stevens highlighted the financial burden textbooks place on students and the need for resources they might need. The event introduced three main options for accessing affordable course materials:
Course Reserves: Materials placed on course reserve can be checked out for a short period, typically two hours. This system allows students in specific classes to borrow materials, but if materials aren’t registered, students may experience difficulties accessing them. Professors must refer (提交) physical materials to the library first.
UR and Public Libraries: Students can search for additional materials in the DiscoverUR catalog. While some e-books in the UR Library have unlimited access, others have usage restrictions. Students can also use digital library cards for the New York Public Library and Monroe County Library, which offer e-books and audiobooks through Libby, providing another valuable resource for course materials.
Open Web Sources: Several open web platforms offer access to course materials, including the Internet Archive, Project Gutenberg, and Hathi Trust Digital Library. These resources are particularly useful for materials published before 1929, which will no longer be protected by copyright (版权) in 2025, and for some more recent academic works.
Students can find a guide to these options on the library’s website and reach out to subject librarians for further assistance.
1. Why was the event “Find it For Free” started?
A. To help students save money. B. To teach academic research skills.
C To advertise public library services. D. To encourage students to donate books.
2. What must happen before students can access Course Reserves materials?
A. Students must present a valid student ID.
B. Students must apply at least 2 hours ahead.
C. Professors must initiate the process of registration.
D. The materials must be made available electronically.
3 What makes Open Web Sources unique?
A. They lend mainly physical materials. B. They are based at university libraries.
C. They offer copyright-free older works. D. They are specially designed for college students.

We just got back from a week-long trip through New Mexico where we traveled through desert landscapes, hiked up mountains, and walked through dry creek beds. We experienced nature and wildlife that was vastly distinct from what I’ve seen before.
We’ve lived in Atlanta for 25 years so it was quite a change from our “city in a forest”. My husband and I were joined by our adult son who now lives in San Diego and is a little more familiar with the west. We like to visit national parks and explore interesting ecosystems.
In New Mexico, everything seemed striking and amazing. Starting in Albuquerque, we took a tram up the Sandia Peak in the Sandia Mountains, where we had fantastic views as we watched parasailers float off into the unending sky. We then drove to Abiquiu, the town where artist Georgia O’Keeffe was so inspired. We stayed at a lovely home pretty much in the middle of nowhere. First, we noticed the breathtaking setting. Then we noticed the ants: billions of tiny ants were marching all over the outside of the property. They were carrying off a few of the native bees that had fallen to the ground near the house.
Once we were awakened in the middle of the night by howling that was both strange and musical. We were told about the coyotes (郊狼) that share the area, so we weren’t surprised when we woke up the next morning to some pretty impressive paw prints right outside the back door. On our final morning hike before heading south in the state, we even spotted a large snake curled up on the path, enjoying the warm morning sun. We stayed far out of its way but certainly watched our steps a little more carefully.
We talked about sustainability throughout the trip. In the past several decades, there’s been so much noticeable change in our travel adventures. That will be great to keep the skies cleaner and save energy. And the coyotes and snakes can be left to dance and enjoy in peace.
4. What can be inferred about the family’s travel preferences?
A. They prefer city life over nature. B. They love places with artistic heritage.
C. They like to visit familiar places. D. They seek diverse natural settings.
5. What do the wildlife encounters suggest about the local environment?
A. It is dangerous for visitors. B. It is little changed by humans.
C. It lacks diverse animal species. D. It is mainly a desert habitat.
6. What message does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. It’s beneficial for us to take an adventure tour.
B. Travel should be safer and more comfortable.
C It’s necessary to boost sustainable tourism.
D. Wildlife is adapting to changes.
7. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Exploring New Mexico’s Wild Beauty. B. Wildlife Encounters in New Mexico.
C. A Family Trip to Atlanta. D. The Challenges of Desert Travel.
C
Will artificial intelligence (AI) replace my job? This is a question that many people think about these days. At present, the application of AI robotics in professional fields, as well as ChatGPT’s abilities to write essays, solve complex problems and more, have heightened moral concerns.
Some people see AI as the ultimate cure for society’s most fundamental problems, while others fear that AI will overtake human intelligence. These two views are based on the assumption that AI is better and smarter than humanity and may ultimately replace human decision-making. But given the fact that technology is the product of human civilization, the challenge from AI is something we have created for ourselves as we keep pushing our own boundaries. In other words, AI’s progress, functions and future direction are all determined by the human brain.
Before AI becomes a threat to humanity, the international community should reach an agreement on the role it is to play. More importantly, related laws and regulations must ensure that AI will benefit society and prevent it from threatening human life. Robots, for example, are believed to develop emotional intelligence sometime, which enables them to recognize, understand and express emotions in a way that is similar to humans, but we must avoid AI copying human emotions. Without legal restrictions, AI may become a social disaster.
The AI-driven new industrial revolution is inexorable. This, like previous ones, which introduced changes that had been unimaginable before, will certainly affect human employment. But it always turned out humanity was able to adapt to each industrial revolution and create new forms of employment. Therefore, it’s unnecessary to worry AI will replace our jobs. While technology advances at a rapid pace, what we need to do is to welcome the AI era rather than block its unfolding for fear of the unknown.
8. Why are some people worried about AI?
A. It has pushed humans’ boundaries. B. It has led to social problems.
C. It may outsmart humans ultimately. D. It may cause human intelligence decline.
9. How can we prevent AI’s potential threat?
A. By stirring emotions. B. By setting laws and regulations.
C. By blocking functions. D. By changing regulations.
10. What does the underlined word “inexorable” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Undesirable. B. Unbelievable. C. Unpredictable. D. Unavoidable.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward AI’s advance?
A. Favorable. B. Cautious. C. Worried. D. Objective.
D
Look! A polar bear is lying lifeless on a beach. On the shore, in the background, stand three guards, talking to each other. One of them has a weapon hanging casually on his shoulder. This powerful image has thrown into question the motivation for this kind of tourism, or ecotourism. Does our proximity (接近) to large animals in the wild, frequently fueled by a desire for sensational images, lead to such animals becoming accustomed to human contact? If that is the case, surely the losing side will end up paying the ultimate price for such proximity.
To my sorrow, I have recently returned from a trip to Svalbard, and indeed stood two weeks ago on the very beach where the bear was shot. The bear’s death should never have happened. Was the beach examined from the ship offshore beforehand? Was there access to flares (照明弹) to scare off a bear that appeared suddenly? These are standard measures for any respected operator. The incident is probably the result of a terrible systemic failure.
Nevertheless, the incident should not negate the value of ecotourism. In its best form, this kind of travel has very little impact, or indeed has a positive effect, on the environment where it takes place. This can be by making financial donations to conservation groups, providing income to local communities, or ensuring protection of certain areas or animals. In Svalbard, visitors become ambassadors for the endangered polar bear, increasing awareness of the fact that the far greater danger facing them is sea-ice melt in the Arctic Ocean.
Ecotourism is an expanding market that brings benefits as well as challenges to the regions around the world in which it operates. Simply closing off these regions is not the answer.
12. Why did the polar bear die?
A. It was probably hunted for its fur. B. It was accidentally killed by flares.
C. Standard safety procedures were not followed. D. The beach lacked safety devices.
13. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. Positive ecotourism. B. Financial donations.
C. Rising awareness about danger. D. Creation of jobs for locals.
14. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph suggest?
A. The guards failed to prevent problems.
B. Better methods for conducting ecotourism are needed.
C. Ecotourism clearly benefits the environment.
D. Safety measures are weak.
15. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To cause readers to focus on polar bears.
B. To encourage readers to reflect on ecotourism.
C. To stress side effects that ecotourism has caused.
D. To analyze why the polar bear was killed.

The other day, I was driving home, a little upset because I hated working at the weekend. On the way, I decided to grab some veggies in the nearby greengrocer's. Since there was still thin ice on the road, I took a glance at the rear mirror to make sure no pedestrians or vehicles came close, and slowly steered the wheel to the right. Then out of any of my expectancy my car bumped into an electric bike, giving out a harsh metallic clash. I collected myself and saw out of the window screen a teenager lean on one side of the bike, one foot off the ground.
All of a sudden, a familiar scene flashed across my mind.
When I was in high school, I had fun riding my bike along the country road on sweltering and boring afternoons during summer holidays. Sometimes I carried my little brother to the only grocery store in the neighborhood where we could buy our favorite ice cream. Once we had an argument about what to buy. Seeing him leave the store in a temper, I jumped on the bike and tried to talk him into going back. Suddenly, he gave me a push and I inclined towards the middle of the road when a motorbike came in my face. I fell on the ground before I could see anything clearly. Luckily, I didn't get hurt but still couldn’t rise to my feet. The motorist, a middle-aged man, ignoring his torn jeans, shed to check on me, “Are you okay? Your leg? Your foot?"
“I am all right, but..."I stared at him, terrified because I was sure he would ask for "big" sum of money for compensation. Instead, he just let me go despite his wife's protests. Guilty as I was, I was happy that I was spared. I was really grateful to the man for pardoning a silly kid who had made such a big mistake involuntarily.

根据第三段“We stayed at a lovely home pretty much in the middle of nowhere. (我们住在一个可爱的小房子里,那里几乎与世隔绝)”以及第四段描述他们在夜间听到郊狼的嚎叫、次日清晨发现爪印、并在小径上遇到晒太阳的蛇等经历,这些野生动物能够自由活动并与人类住所如此接近,暗示了当地环境受人类影响较小,保持了较为原始的自然状态。故选B项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“We talked about sustainability throughout the trip. In the past several decades, there’s been so much noticeable change in our travel adventures. That will be great to keep the skies cleaner and save energy. And the coyotes and snakes can be left to dance and enjoy in peace. (我们在整个旅途中都在谈论可持续发展。在过去的几十年里,我们的旅行经历发生了许多显著的变化。保持天空更洁净、节约能源将会是一件很棒的事。这样一来,郊狼和蛇也能安然自在地活动和生活了)”可知,作者在旅行中思考可持续性问题,并认为可持续的旅行方式(如使用电动汽车)能保护环境、节约能源,让野生动物不受打扰,因此作者意在传达推广可持续旅游的必要性。故选C项。

A. Favorable. B. Cautious. C. Worried. D. Objective.
C 9. B 10. D 11. A

根据第二段“Some people see AI as the ultimate cure for society’s most fundamental problems, while others fear that AI will overtake human intelligence. These two views are based on the assumption that AI is better and smarter than humanity and may ultimately replace human decision-making. (有些人将人工智能视为解决社会最根本问题的终极方法,而另一些人则担心人工智能会超越人类智能。这两种观点都基于这样一种假设,即人工智能比人类更好、更聪明,最终可能取代人类的决策)”可知,部分人担忧AI是因为他们认为AI最终可能会比人类更聪明,即超越人类。故选C项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Before AI becomes a threat to humanity, the international community should reach an agreement on the role it is to play. More importantly, related laws and regulations must ensure that AI will benefit society and prevent it from threatening human life. (在人工智能对人类构成威胁之前,国际社会应就其应发挥的作用达成共识。更重要的是,相关法律法规必须确保人工智能造福社会,防止其威胁人类生命)” 以及“Without legal restrictions, AI may become a social disaster. (没有法律限制,人工智能可能会成为一场社会灾难)”可知,通过制定法律法规可以防范AI的潜在威胁。故选B项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段“The AI-driven new industrial revolution is inexorable. This, like previous ones, which introduced changes that had been unimaginable before, will certainly affect human employment. (人工智能驱动的新工业革命是inexorable的。这与以往的工业革命一样,带来了前所未有的变化,必将影响人类就业)”可知,后文提到新工业革命“必将影响人类就业”,且将其与“以往的工业革命”类比,而以往的工业革命是历史发展中必然发生的趋势,由此可推测“inexorable”意为“不可避免的”,与“Unavoidable”意思相近,符合语境。故选D项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Therefore, it’s unnecessary to worry AI will replace our jobs. While technology advances at a rapid pace, what we need to do is to welcome the AI era rather than block its unfolding for fear of the unknown. (因此,不必担心人工智能会取代我们的工作。在技术飞速发展的今天,我们需要做的是迎接人工智能时代,而不是因为对未知的恐惧而阻碍它的发展)”可知,作者明确表示无需担忧AI取代工作,主张迎接AI时代,而非阻碍其发展,由此可判断作者对AI的发展持支持态度。故选A项。

C 13. A 14. B 15. B

These are standard measures for any respected operator. The incident is probably the result of a terrible systemic failure.
根据第三段“Nevertheless, the incident should not negate the value of ecotourism. In its best form, this kind of travel has very little impact, or indeed has a positive effect, on the environment where it takes place. (然而,这一事件不应否定生态旅游的价值。在其最佳形式下,这种旅行对其发生的环境几乎没有影响,或者实际上有积极影响。)”可知,该段主要讲述了积极的生态旅游及其带来的正面影响。故选A项。
根据最后一段“Ecotourism is an expanding market that brings benefits as well as challenges to the regions around the world in which it operates. Simply closing off these regions is not the answer. (生态旅游是一个不断扩大的市场,它给其运营的世界各地的地区带来了好处,也带来了挑战。简单地关闭这些地区并不是解决办法。)”可知,生态旅游既有利也有挑战,不能简单关闭相关地区,言外之意是需要更好的方法来开展生态旅游。故选B项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“Look! A polar bear is lying lifeless on a beach. On the shore, in the background, stand three guards, talking to each other. One of them has a weapon hanging casually on his shoulder.
故填are concerned。
less...and more...
故填where。
故填up。
故填and。

Dear Carol,
I’m writing to apply for being your cycling partner to Zhangjiajie, as I saw your online ad. I’ve always wanted to visit there — its unique stone mountains sound amazing — and this cycling trip feels like a great chance.
I have 3 years of cycling experience, often doing 50 km weekend rides in the countryside. I can fix basic bike issues like loose chains, and I’ve built good physical strength for long trips — both will help a lot on our journey.
Hope you’ll consider me. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours Sincerely,
Li Hua

注意:1,续写的词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1
Seeing the same fright in the boy's eyes, I quickly got out of my car.
Paragraph 2
The boy offered to give me some money for the damage.
Paragraph 1
Seeing the same fright in the boy's eyes, I quickly got out of my car. “Are you okay? Your leg? Your foot?” I asked the same questions. The boy leaning on the bike shook his head nervously and spoke nothing. He just looked at me with his blue eyes wide open. I could see why. My car was badly damaged at the rear, which obviously would cost me lots of money to repair it. I just smiled and turned to check my car. Suddenly, the boy said something behind me.
Paragraph 2
The boy offered to give me some money for the damage. I turned around and looked at him in the eyes and smiled again. “No worries, kid,” I said, “It is not a big deal. I can handle it myself.” The boy was puzzled. “I experienced the same things when I was as your age and I was forgiven, so are you now. Just go home and be careful.” I explained to him. An obvious surprise flashed across his face but was quickly replaced by great relief. He got off his bike and bowed deeply, saying, “Thank you, sir.” I smiled again, knowing that: A seed of kindness and forgiveness was planted.
