Four Top Places for Freshwater Diving
If you’re ready for an adventure and eager to explore our waterways, these four destinations will leave you breathless.
Crystal River, Florida
Located about one hour and a half north of Tampa, Crystal River is the only part of Florida where swimmers are monitored around manatees or sea cows. The area keeps a list of Special Use permit holders authorized to offer tours, rentals, and instruction within its limits. If you’re ready to dive into water and meet manatees for yourself, there’s no better place to start your adventure.

Maria Rodriguez, our school cafeteria server for ten years, always greeted us with a warm smile while preparing meals. One Monday, however, I noticed her quietly wiping tears in the corner of the staff room. My first thought was that she might be facing personal hardships — until I saw her gently holding a framed certificate and whispering, “I did it... finally.” Her tears, I soon realized, were of overwhelming pride. At 42, Maria had just earned her high school diploma.
Struggling with hearing loss since childhood, Maria dropped out at 15 to support her sick parents. She worked multiple low-income jobs until securing stable work in our school cafeteria. Last year, when the school introduced a new digital ordering system, Maria’s supervisor gently explained that operating it required basic computer literacy — which in turn required a high school credential. “We’ll keep your position,” he said, “but to continue long-term, you’ll need to complete your diploma within two years.”
Maria enrolled in night classes at a local adult education center. Balancing her cafeteria shifts, parenting two teenagers, and studying meant surviving on 4-5 hours of sleep nightly. She tracked her progress uniquely: every passed practice test earned a gold star on her kitchen calendar. “Those stars shouted ‘Keep going!’ on exhausting days,” she laughed. Her biology teacher remarked, “Maria often stayed after class to review materials — her determination was extraordinary.”
When Maria received her diploma last month, she called it “a key unlocking doors I thought were sealed forever.” But for her, graduation isn’t an endpoint — it’s a launchpad. She now enrolled in online business courses. “My next goal is to manage a food-service team,” she declared. “This is just the beginning.”
4. Why was Maria crying in the staff room?
A. She felt exhausted from overwork.
B She recalled her family difficulties.
C. Her supervisor criticized her performance.
D. She had achieved an important milestone.
5. What did the school require Maria to do to keep her job?
A. Master the digital system within a nonth.
B. Complete her high school education.
C. Train another staff member.
D. Switch to part-time work.
6. How did Maria motivate herself during tough times?
A. By focusing on small symbols of progress.
B. By reducing her workload significantly.
C. By seeking financial support from the school.
D. By prioritizing sleep over studying.
7. What can we learn from Maria’s story?
A. Nothing can stop a willing heart.
B. The early bird catches the worm.
C. Always prepare for a rainy day.
D. Grasp all, lose all.

In recent years, the concept of “slow travel” has emerged as a reaction to the fast paced, mass tourism that dominates the industry. Slow travel encourages travelers to engage profoundly with local cultures, stay longer in destinations, and form meaningful connections with local communities.
One of the key principles of slow travel is to reduce environmental impact. By choosing to stay in locally-owned accommodations, eating at family-run restaurants, and using public transportation or bicycles, travelers can significantly decrease their carbon footprint. For instance, a study found that tourists who engage in slow travel produce up to 70% less greenhouse gas emissions compared to those on traditional package tours.
Slow travel also allows for a deeper cultural understanding. Instead of rushing through tourist attractions, slow travelers take the time to participate in local traditions, learn about historical significance, and interact with residents. This not only enriches the travel experience but also provides economic benefits to local communities. In some rural areas, slow travel initiatives have helped preserve endangered crafts and revitalize (使恢复元气) dying traditions.
However, slow travel is not without challenges. It requires more planning and flexibility, as travelers need to research local customs, transportation options, and authentic experiences. Additionally, slow travel may not be feasible for everyone due to time or budget constraints (约束). For busy professionals or families with limited vacation days, spending weeks in a single destination may seem unrealistic.
Despite these challenges, the slow travel movement continues to grow. Travelers are becoming more conscious of their environmental and cultural impact, and many are seeking more authentic and sustainable ways to explore the world. As a result, travel companies are starting to offer more slow-travel options. such as extended homestays and cultural immersion programs.
8. What is the benefit of slow travel?
A. It can save money on traveling.
B. It can be more environmentally friendly.
C. It can allow travelers to visit more places hurriedly.
D. It can increase the financial income of travel companies.
9. What can we learn about slow travel from the third paragraph?
A. It has little impact on local economies.
B. It focuses on superficial interactions with locals.
C. It discourages travelers from learning about history.
D. It may contribute to the preservation of traditional crafts.
10. What does the underlined word “feasible” mean in this context?
A. practical B. inevitable C. contradictory D. desirable
11. What can be inferred about the future of slow travel?
A. It will replace traditional tourism entirely. B. It may become more popular in the future.
C. It will cost less as time passes. D. It will only be accessible to wealthy travelers.
D
French scientists from France’s Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) have announced their experiment — carried out on February 12 — has set a new record of 1,337 seconds for keeping or maintaining hydrogen atoms in a state called plasma (等离子体), 25 percent longer than the previous one, which was set in China last month.
The team said their work marks an important step in the search for nuclear fusion (核聚变) methods that could produce clean, safe and almost limitless energy. The aim of fusion research is to create the same kind of nuclear reaction as happens in the center of the sun. In a fusion reaction, the centers of two atoms fuse, or join together, to form a new atom with a heavier nucleus, or center, releasing large amounts of energy.
However, because fusion happens at very high temperatures, it is difficult to control. The scientists in France used a machine — a circular ring with strong walls to resist intense heat — called a tokamak to do their research. Inside the ring, hydrogen atoms are heated to temperatures up to about 50 million degrees Celsius, creating plasma that is held together by powerful magnets.
Anne-Isabelle Etienvre, CEA’s head of fundamental research, told the French news agency AFP the new record for making plasma shows “that we control its production, but also its maintenance.” However, Etienvre noted that there are still many “technological barriers” to overcome before fusion can “produce more energy than it consumes”.
Scientists say that for nuclear fusion to succeed, hydrogen atoms will need to be heated up to more than 100 million degrees Celsius. But at this extreme temperature, plasma can become unstable and difficult to control, which can lead to energy loss and limit how well a possible future nuclear fusion reactor could work.
In the coming months, the research team will look to increase the time they can keep the atoms in a plasma state, hoping to bring the total time “up to several hours combined”. The CEA noted that in future experiments, scientists will also aim to heat the plasma to higher temperatures and examine the effects the hot plasma has on their testing machine.
Teams from multiple countries are working together in southern France to build the world’s largest tokamak and fusion research center, called ITER, hoping the current research on maintaining plasma will be useful for future projects at ITER. However, AFP reports that repeated delays and increasing costs have postponed operations at ITER until at least 2033.
12. What is the main achievement reported by French scientists?
A. They created a new type of tokamak machine.
B. They achieved nuclear fusion at 100 million degrees Celsius.
C. They broke China’s record for plasma maintenance time by 25%.
D. They sustained plasma for 1337 seconds, setting a new world record.
13. According to the text, what remains a major challenge for nuclear fusion?
A. Building larger tokamak machines.
B. Reducing experiment costs.
C. Maintaining plasma stability at over 100 million degrees Celsius.
D. Finding alternative energy sources.
14. What will the scientists mainly try to do in the next step?
A. To heat the plasma to 100 million degrees Celsius.
B. To keep hydrogen atoms in a plasma state longer.
C. To test how the hot plasma affects the testing machine.
D. To research how nuclear fusion happens.
15. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. Plasma — a state of hydrogen atoms
B. Nuclear fusion — a technology to improve human life
C. A great breakthrough — scientists made in nuclear fusion
D. Hydrogen atoms — the fuel of nuclear fusion

My sister Lily and I had always been inseparable. But everything changed when I turned sixteen. One evening, I came home to find her holding our mother’s broken porcelain vase — the one that had been passed down for generations. Her hands trembled as she tried to explain it was an accident. “You broke it” I screamed. “This meant everything to Mom” Lily burst into tears and ran out of the room. From that day on, she avoided me, and our once-close bond shattered.
A month later, our school organized a community service project at the local nursing home. I was paired with Lily, much to my dismay. The thought of spending hours with her filled me with dread. As we walked into the nursing home, an elderly woman named Mrs. Wilson greeted us with a warm smile. “You girls look just like my granddaughters,” she said. “Would you mind helping me with my garden?” We nodded reluctantly.
In the garden, Lily and I worked, in silence. Mrs. Wilson chatted about her late husband and how much she missed him. Suddenly, both Mrs. Wilson and I glanced at Lily staring at a cracked flowerpot. Mrs. Wilson went up to her, and touched the flowerpot gently.” This is the last gift from my husband. Though it is broken, every time I see it my husband’s smile comes to my mind. “Seeing Lily and me, listening seriously, she continued softly “Love isn’t about perfection.” It’s about seeing the beauty in broken things.”

B. She recalled her family difficulties.
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. A 7. A

【答案】8. B 9. D 10. A 11. B

D. They sustained plasma for 1,337 seconds, setting a new world record.
15 Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. Plasma — a state of hydrogen atoms
B. Nuclear fusion — a technology to improve human life
C. A great breakthrough — scientists made in nuclear fusion
D. Hydrogen atoms — the fuel of nuclear fusion
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. C

【答案】Dear Jenny,
I am writing to share my preference regarding the new elective course for incoming Grade 10 students. After careful consideration, I strongly support introducing “Career Planning” as the new elective.
This course would be invaluable for freshmen who may feel a bit lost about future paths. It would help them explore interests, understand career options, and set academic goals early on — crucial for making informed subject choices in high school. While creative writing is engaging, career guidance addresses an urgent need for direction during this transitional phase.
Thank you for considering student perspectives!

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

That night, I found Lily sitting on the porch, staring at the stars.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
The next day, we decided to fix the broken vase together.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
That night, I found Lily sitting on the porch, staring at the stars. Her shoulders shook slightly as she wiped away tears. I hesitated, then took a deep breath and sat beside her. “I’m sorry,” I said quietly. “I shouldn’t have blamed you for the vase. Mom would’ve wanted us to forgive each other.” Lily turned to me, her eyes glistening. “I’ve been so scared to talk to you,” she whispered. “I thought you’d never forgive me. I didn’t mean to break it.” I wrapped my arm around her, and we sat in silence, the weight of our misunderstanding lifting. Finally, Lily said, “Mrs. Wilson’s pot had cracks, but she said it was still special.” I nodded. “Maybe we can stick these together?”
Paragraph 2:
The next day, we decided to repair the broken vase together. I brought out the box of vase pieces I’d swept up that day. We spread the pieces on the table and got white glue. Lily held two pieces up: “See? This curve fits here.” I pressed them gently, and they stuck! We kept going: put glue on the edges, hold them tight, wipe off the extra glue with a tissue. When we finished, the vase had thin lines where it was broken, but you could still see the blue birds flying around. “It’s not perfect,” I said. Lily smiled. “But it’s ours. And the cracks? They make it special, like Mrs. Wilson said, broken things can still be beautiful.” I looked at her, and knew — love’s not about being perfect. It’s about making broken things beautiful. That day, I realized that family isn’t about avoiding mistakes — it’s about growing through them. The vase may never be perfect, but our relationship was stronger than ever.
