Trends in electric car markets
Electric car sales topped 17 million worldwide in 2024, rising by more than 25%. And China maintained its lead among major markets, with electric car sales over 11 million.
Among them, sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) (插电混合动力汽车) have been growing faster than sales of battery electric vehicles (BEV). The acceleration (加速) of PHEV sales in China led the share of BEV sales to fall slightly in 2024, though in absolute terms EV sales increased sevenfold over the same period, demonstrating their continued appeal to new customers.
The growth in China reflects in no small part the growing price competitiveness of battery electric cars with conventional cars in the country. In addition, China’s electric car market benefited from the government’s trade-in scheme (以旧换新计划) in April 2024.
Besides, recent years have seen the birth of several new electric car brands in emerging markets in Asia. And they are seeing local and even international success. Here are displays for electric car sales share in some selected countries in 2024.
Notably, the rapid growth in electric car sales over the past years has had a significant impact on the global oil consumption: The global stock of electric cars replaced over 1 million barrels per day of oil consumption in 2024.
For the full year 2025, electric car sales are expected to increase by 25% globally, which is similar to the growth rate from the 2024. As a result, electric car sales top 20 million worldwide. While sales volumes may be impacted by economic and policy uncertainties, more than one in four cars sold in 2025 is expected to be electric.
1. How much did the sales of BEVs in China increase in 2024 compared to 2021?
A. 1.5 million. B. 3.7 million.
C. 5.9 million. D. 6.4 million.
2. What contributed to China’s EV market growth in 2024 according to the text?
A. The innovative designs of electric cars.
B. The expansion of the overseas market.
C. Price competitiveness and government support.
D. The explosive growth in the sales of PHEVs.
3. Which country saw the largest increase in electric car sales share in 2024?
A. Indonesia. B. Malaysia. C. Vietnam. D. Türkiye.

When Dink NeSmith heard that his friend Ralph Maxwell was shutting down his weekly newspaper, The Oglethorpe Echo, due to health issues, he was determined to save the nearly 150-year-old publication from disappearing.
Both NeSmith and Maxwell are long-time residents of Oglethorpe County, located east of Athens. They have known each other for nearly five decades. NeSmith has also been contributing a column to The Oglethorpe Echo ever since he moved to Oglethorpe County.
Maxwell’s father bought The Oglethorpe Echo in 1956, but its origins date back to 1874. It’s a record of everything from local weddings to significant legislative (立法的) changes.
NeSmith looked up at the ceiling of the office, searching for an answer. Then, inspiration struck. He called Charles Davis, dean (院长) of the University of Georgia’s Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. “I’ve got an idea,” NeSmith told him. “I want to turn The Oglethorpe Echo into a practical training ground for the future journalists at the Grady College.”
Davis was enthusiastic about the idea, and they built a sustainable business model to ensure the newspaper’s future. They developed a cornerstone course (综合性课程) with The Oglethorpe Echo as its foundation. Students experience a working newsroom which acts as a stepping stone into their careers.
Traditionally run by a single reporter, The Echo now benefited from a team of eager student journalists.
Of course, they needed someone to run the newspaper. So Andy Johnston joined in. He was the adviser for The Red & Black from 2018 to 2021, and familiar with working with students and had an extensive journalism background. Most importantly, he believed in the project.
He teams up with Amanda Bright, the course instructor, who has spent her career as a community journalist across various platforms, from mid-sized daily newspapers to digital startups. Together, they developed new digital strategies for The Oglethorpe Echo, including an email newsletter, four social media channels, and an updated website.
4. What has NeSmith ever done for The Oglethorpe Echo before the plan?
A. He contributed regularly to a column. B. He developed a cornerstone course.
C. He led a team of student journalists. D. He suggested new digital strategies.
5. What did NeSmith propose for The Oglethorpe Echo?
A. A focus only on online news.
B. A partnership with local businesses.
C. A practical training platform for students.
D. A weekly publication with more journalists.
6. What probably motivated Andy Johnston to join The Oglethorpe Echo?
A. His belief in the potential of the project.
B His familiarity with student work.
C. His connection to Oglethorpe County.
D. His desire for promotion in journalism.
7. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The history of The Oglethorpe Echo. B. Journalism education at Grady College.
C. NeSmith’s friendship with Maxwell. D. The transformation of a local newspaper.

Tropical (热带的) forests could face temperatures so high that some leaves may no longer perform photosynthesis (光合作用), as indicated by a recent study. The photosynthetic machinery in tropical trees begins to fail at about 46.7℃ on average. The research suggests that forests may be nearing the dangerous temperature sooner than expected. Models predict that if global temperatures rise by 3.9℃, widespread leaf damage could occur in these forests.
Chris Doughy, an associate professor at Northern Arizona University and the lead researcher of the study, explained the leaf-warming experiments had revealed a nonlinear rise in temperatures. “We were surprised to find that when we increased leaf temperatures by 2, 3 or 4℃, the highest leaf temperatures actually increased by 8℃. This showed a concerning nonlinear feedback we hadn’t anticipated,” said Doughy. “If we adopt a do-nothing response to climate change and tropical forest air temperatures increase by greater than 4℃, there could be extensive leaf death,” he added.
Avoiding high-emissions (排放) is essential to stabilize temperatures. “We should do all we can to avoid high-emissions. Under low-emissions, nearly all tropical forest tree leaves can avoid death from overheating and the trees will survive,” said Simon Lewis, a professor of global change science at University College London. “However, this study did not look at heatwaves. We still might see tree deaths from overheating for limited periods during heatwaves under lower emissions.”
Researchers believe that the damage is not yet unchanged. “Vote for people who are serious about addressing climate change and transferring to low-carbon economies,” Disney, one researcher, said. “More generally, we can all recognize the importance of supporting those countries and people who live in and rely on tropical forests economically. But the serious changes to tropical forests are not just a local problem but a global concern.”
8. What does the recent research on tropical forests mainly show?
A. The leaves have died extensively.
B. Leaves grow faster in high temperature.
C. Photosynthesis may fail at high temperatures.
D. Trees can regulate leaf temperatures in extreme heat.
9. What does the underlined word “nonlinear” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Illogical. B. Slow. C. Rapid. D. Predictable.
10. Why is it important to avoid high-emissions according to the text?
A. It prevents forest from drying out completely.
B. It helps prevent the leaves from overheating.
C. It improves photosynthesis rates.
D. It promotes tree diversity in forests.
11. What is the purpose of Disney’s statement in the last paragraph?
A. To get more votes from local people.
B. To encourage action on climate change.
C. To stress the significance of tropical forests.
D. To introduce ways to avoid high emissions.
D
In March 2023, a group of computer scientists at Microsoft Research published an assessment of OpenAI’s new chatbot, GPT-4. The team report drew global attention to one test in particular. They put this question to GPT-4.
Here we have a book, nine eggs, a laptop, a bottle and a nail. Please tell me how to stack (摞起) them onto each other in a stable manner.
This is not an essay question. Nor is it a story problem. It is a practical problem requiring common sense and even original thought.
Earlier versions of the chatbot gave absurd (荒谬的) answers (such as stacking the nine eggs on top of each other). But GPT-4’s answer called for placing the eggs in a three-by-three arrangement between the book and the laptop. The egg layer supports the book, whose weight secures the eggs in place. The book in turn supports the bottle and nail. This answer, praised as a success, resulted in the current global wave of AI anxiety. It has led discussions about how large language models (LLMs) are able to perform creative tasks.
The egg-stacking puzzle is an example of a functional fixedness problem. As described by Gestalt psychologist Karl Duncker in a 1945 paper, these ask the solver to complete a task with a given set of objects. The solution includes using some of the objects in unusual or creative ways.
By 2022, LLMs were being trained on as many as 17 trillion words of human-generated text, mainly from the Internet. It’s all but certain that GPT-4 encountered functional fixedness problems in its training.
Are LLMs truly original, or are they just plagiarism (剽窃) good at covering their tracks? There’s nothing completely new under the sun. Edison did not invent the light bulb; he improved it. Most so-called creators apply knowledge from different fields to a problem and arrive at a solution. It’s more a matter of making relevant connections than of creating something completely new. If LLMs are indeed developing the ability to make relevant connections, that would be a great — and worrying — development.
12. What was the main focus of the Microsoft Research assessment?
A. Exploring AI’s impact on society.
B. Comparing GPT-4 with earlier versions.
C. Analyzing the development of AI technologies.
D. Testing GPT-4’s problem-solving abilities.
13. What do we know about GPT-4’s answer according to the text?
A. It focuses mainly on problem analysis.
B. It cannot be put into practice.
C It refers to the previous chatbot’s answer.
D. It uses weight distribution effectively.
14. Which factor contributes to LLMs’ ability to solve problems?
A. Access to limited training data.
B. Extensive training on diverse text.
C. Exposure to creative tasks during training.
D. Training on traditional problem-solving methods.
15. What is mainly emphasized in the last paragraph?
A. The way to identify a plagiarism.
B. The importance of learning from other fields.
C. The difficulty of creating something completely new.
D. The power of making relevant connections.

In a small village nestled at the foot of a towering mountain lived a young woman named Maya. She had always been fascinated by the mountain’s impressive beauty. For as long as she could remember, Maya dreamed of standing at the summit. Every day, she would look up at the peak, imagining what it would be like to stand at the top and see the world from that height.
One day, Maya decided that it was time to turn her dream into a reality. Filled with hope and excitement, she packed a small bag with essentials: a phone, a map, a compass, some food, and warm clothing. After saying a heartfelt goodbye to her family, she set off on her journey. The initial part of the climb was controlled, with a gentle slope (斜坡) and a less traveled path. However, as she climbed higher, the path became steeper and more challenging. rocks tumbled (翻滚) under her feet, and the cold wind bit at her cheeks, but Maya held on, determined to reach the summit.
Halfway up the mountain, Maya encountered a group of seasoned climbers making their way down. “You’d better turn back,” one of them suggested. "The climb is becoming increasingly dangerous, and the weather is worsening. It’s not worth the risk.” For a moment, doubt clouded Maya’s mind. She felt tired, cold, and unsure if she could continue.
But then, Maya remembered why she had started the climb in the first place. She remembered the countless hours spent imagining the view from the summit and the inner strength she had gained by pursuing her dreams. She wanted to prove to herself that she was capable of achieving her dreams, no matter how difficult the journey was. Taking a deep breath and filled with renewed determination, she thanked the climbers for their concern but decided to continue.

8 What does the recent research on tropical forests mainly show?
C 9. A 10. B 11. B

The photosynthetic machinery in tropical trees begins to fail at about 46.7℃ on average.(最近的一项研究表明,热带森林可能会面临高温,届时一些树叶可能无法再进行光合作用。
根据第二段中“...the leaf-warming experiments had revealed a nonlinear rise in temperatures. “We were surprised to find that when we increased leaf temperatures by 2, 3 or 4℃, the highest leaf temperatures actually increased by 8℃. This showed a concerning nonlinear feedback we hadn’t anticipated,” said Doughy.(叶片变暖实验揭示了温度的nonlinear上升。“我们惊讶地发现,当我们将叶片温度提高2、3或4℃时,最高叶片温度实际上增加了8℃。这显示了一种我们未曾预料到的令人担忧的非线性反馈,”Doughy说)”可知,研究者在叶片温度实验中发现了非线性的温度上升现象,即叶片温度上升幅度超出了他们的预期,这是不合逻辑的。故划线词nonlinear的意思是“不合逻辑的”,与A项“Illogical”同义。故选A项。
根据第三段中““We should do all we can to avoid high-emissions. Under low-emissions, nearly all tropical forest tree leaves can avoid death from overheating and the trees will survive,” said Simon Lewis(“我们应该尽一切努力避免高排放。在低排放的情况下,几乎所有热带森林的树叶都能避免因过热而死亡,树木也将得以生存,”Simon Lewis说)”可知,应该尽一切努力避免高排放,因为这样几乎所有热带森林的树叶都能避免因过热而死亡,树木也将存活下来。故选B项。
【11题详解】

In March 2023, a group of computer scientists at Microsoft Research published an assessment of OpenAI’s new chatbot, GPT-4. The team report drew global attention to one test in particular. They put this question to GPT-4.
Here we have a book, nine eggs, a laptop, a bottle and a nail. Please tell me how to stack (摞起) them onto each other in a stable manner.
This is not an essay question Nor is it a story problem.
C. It refers to the previous chatbot’s answer.
D 13. D 14. B 15. D

故填was prized。
故填which。
故填the。

One possible version:
When she climbed higher than before, the air grew thinner, and every step became a struggle. Maya’s muscles ached, and her breath became rapid, but she refused to give up. She knew that each step forward, no matter how small, brought her closer to her goal. After several hours of hard work, Maya finally reached the summit. She stood at the peak, looking out over the vast landscape below. The view was more breathtaking than she had ever imagined, and tears of joy filled her eyes. At that moment, Maya realized that the journey up the mountain was not just about reaching the top; it was about discovering her own strength and willpower.
With a heart full of pride, Maya knew that there was no challenge too great for her to overcome. She had climbed her mountain, and in doing so, she had discovered the power that lay within her all along. And from that day forward, Maya never doubted herself again. She faced each new challenge with the same determination and courage, knowing that she had the strength to climb any mountain, both in the world and within herself.
