As Grammy-winning violinist Mads Tolling played for parents of children receiving treatment at Comer Children’s Hospital, Jamie Freedlund spotted a mother who was just taking it all in — she was listening and there were just tears streaming down her face.
Tolling was invited to play by a charity called Mattea’s Joy, founded by Jamie and her husband, Gary. The non-profit provides dinner, snack boxes and other support for families with hospitalized children.
The Freedlunds founded Mattea’s Joy in honor of their daughter Mattea Joy Freedlund, who battled a variety of health challenges during her short but impactful life and died in 2010.
An insurance had been planned for the family before Mattea’s passing and the pair decided to use the money to cook meals for families whose children were hospitalized at Comer Children’s Hospital. Soon the dinners became a regular occurrence and their non-profit organization was born. Its mission is to provide care and comfort to families just like them.
Mattea’s Joy’s current projects include serving dinner to about 100 families a month, distributing snack boxes to hospitals, and providing packets filled with gift cards and parking passes.
Reese Freedlund, 15, was just 3 years old when her sister Mattea passed away. Their memory of Mattea lives on in her family’s volunteer work, which is impressed into everything they do. “Mattea’s Joy has really become a part of our lives,” said Reese. “Even though she passed away, her life was an inspiration for my parents to create something more out of it.”
Since Mattea’s passing, the Freedlunds have added two boys to their family, Cooper, 11, and Kipton, 7. Cooper has learned valuable lessons from helping families through the organization. “Mattea’s Joy has taught me to always serve others and to just be kind,” said Cooper.
4. Why was Mads Tolling mentioned in the first paragraph?
A To introduce the topic. B. To put forward a concept.
C. To present a common scene. D. To provide background information.
5. What are the Freedlunds like?
A. They can relate to others. B. They have a gift for music.
C. They are easily persuaded. D. They can seize opportunities.
6. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. Mattea Joy’s death remains a mystery.
B. The Freedlunds spent all their spare time volunteering.
C. Working for Mattea’s Joy benefits the Freedlunds’ kids.
D. Reese Freedlund was inspired to create a new organization.
7. What is the best title of the text?
A. Rewards for kindness B. Kindness Arising from Loss
C. Memories of the Freedlunds D. Comfort brought by Luckier People
D 5. D 6. C 7. B

根据文章第一段“As Grammy-winning violinist Mads Tolling played for parents of children receiving treatment at Comer Children’s Hospital, Jamie Freedlund spotted a mother who was just taking it all in — she was listening and there were just tears streaming down her face.(当格莱美获奖小提琴家麦兹·托林在科默儿童医院为接受治疗的孩子的父母演奏时,杰米·弗里兰德发现一位母亲正在接受这一切——她在听,眼泪从脸上流下来)”可知,本文的故事背景应该和儿童医院有关系,所以第一段提到麦兹·托林是为了为下文的故事提供背景信息。
根据文章第三段“The Freedlunds founded Mattea’s Joy in honor of their daughter Mattea Joy Freedlund, who battled a variety of health challenges during her short but impactful life and died in 2010.(弗里伦德夫妇为了纪念他们的女儿玛特娅·乔伊·弗里伦德而创立了“玛特娅的快乐”,她在短暂但有影响力的一生中与各种健康挑战作斗争,并于2010年去世)”可知,弗里伦德夫妇在女儿去世后创立非盈利组织来帮助更多的人,说明弗里伦德夫妇是可以抓住机会的。
根据文章倒数第二段““Mattea’s Joy has really become a part of our lives,” said Reese. “Even though she passed away, her life was an inspiration for my parents to create something more out of it.”(“Mattea’s Joy 真的已经成为我们生活的一部分,”里斯说。“虽然她去世了,但她的一生激励着我的父母去创造更多的东西。”)”和最后一段“Cooper has learned valuable lessons from helping families through the organization. “Mattea’s Joy has taught me to always serve others and to just be kind,” said Cooper.(库珀在通过该组织帮助家庭的过程中学到了宝贵的经验。“Mattea’s Joy 教会了我永远要为他人服务,要善良,”库珀说)”可知,为Mattea’s Joy工作使弗里伦德夫妇的孩子们受益。故选C项。
【7题详解】

C
While the idea of warmer, shorter winters might sound appealing to farmers eager to tap into longer growing seasons those engaged in Georgia’s massive peach industry are finding the trend alarming. Since 1960, the average winter temperature in Georgia, has risen by 5°F. For farmers who depend on cold weather to help peaches grow, the state’s diminishing winters are a warning to adapt or else.
One of the keys to growing the perfect Georgia peach is something called “chill (寒冷的) hours.” Nut and fruit trees require a certain number of chill hours below 45°F to regulate their growth. Without the needed amount, flower buds may be delayed or unpredictable in spring and fruit set and fruit quality will be poor. In Georgia, home to nearly 12,000 acres of peaches, the average peach tree requires anywhere from 650 to 850 chill hours each season.
The impact from a loss of chill hours was felt most recently in 2017, when farms across the state averaged less than 400 hours and 85% of the peach crop was lost. “It was so bad that we didn’t care about the blooms anymore.” Chavez said, “We wondered if the plants would survive.”
While planting new varieties of peaches that require fewer chill hours is part of the solution, it’s not the only characteristic that’s necessary. Despite warmer, shorter winters, Georgia still experiences a consistent frost in early March. Peach varieties with fewer chill hours often bloom earlier, making them easy victims to this freezing spring temperatures.
In response, the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) is experimenting with hybrid varieties that achieve that delicate balance. The days of planting 1,000+ chill hour varieties in Georgia may be gone, but the hope is that continued research into global warming-tolerant varieties may keep the state’s official fruit firmly in the sweet spot of American produce.
“We’ve got to keep changing as the environment changes,” Georgia farmer Lawton Pearson said. “But it’s not something that scares us in the slightest about the future of growing peaches. It’s just something you’ve got to deal with.”
8. What does the underlined word “diminishing” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A Shortened. B. Freezing.
C. Disappearing. D. Delayed.
9. Why are Chave’s remarks cited in Paragraph 3?
A. To explain reasons for chill-hours loss.
B. To prove 2017 is the worst year in history.
C. To confirm peach farmers suffered the most.
D. To show the serious consequence of chill-hours loss.
10. What is the key to successfully developing warming-tolerant peach varieties?
A. Improvement of sweetness of peaches.
B. Achievement of the shortest chill hours.
C. Avoidance of peaches’ much delayed flowering,
D. Balance between low chill and normal flowering.
11. What is Lawton Pearson’s attitude toward the future of growing peaches?
A. Curious. B. Skeptical.
C. Positive. D. Ambiguous.
A 9. D 10. D 11. C

根据第一段“While the idea of warmer, shorter winters might sound appealing to farmers eager to tap into longer growing seasons those engaged in Georgia’s massive peach industry are finding the trend alarming. Since 1960, the average winter temperature in Georgia, has risen by 5°F. For farmers who depend on cold weather to help peaches grow, the state’s diminishing winters are a warning to adapt or else. (虽然更温暖、更短的冬天听起来可能对渴望利用更长的生长季节的农民很有吸引力,但从事格鲁吉亚大规模桃子产业的农民却发现这一趋势令人担忧。自1960年以来,格鲁吉亚冬季平均气温上升了5华氏度。对于那些依靠寒冷天气来帮助桃子生长的农民来说,该州diminishing的冬天是一个警告,他们必须适应,否则就会失败。)”,以及第二段“One of the keys to growing the perfect Georgia peach is something called ‘chill (寒冷的) hours.’ Nut and fruit trees require a certain number of chill hours below 45°F to regulate their growth.
根据第三段“The impact from a loss of chill hours was felt most recently in 2017, when farms across the state less than 400 hours and 85% of the peach crop was lost. ‘It was so bad that we didn’t care about the blooms anymore.’ Chavez said, ‘We wondered if the plants would survive.’ (最近在2017年感受到寒冷时间减少的影响,当时全州农场的寒冷时间不到400小时,85%的桃子产量损失了。查韦斯说,‘这太糟糕了,我们不再关心花朵了。我们想知道这些植物能否存活下来。’)”可知,寒冷时间的缩短不但影响到桃花什么时候开,桃子产量会如何,更影响到这些桃树能否存活下来,说明寒冷时间的缩短对桃子产业的严重影响。故选D项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Despite warmer, shorter winters, Georgia still experiences a consistent frost in early March. Peach varieties with fewer chill hours often bloom earlier, making them easy victims to this freezing spring temperatures. (尽管冬天变暖、变短,乔治亚州在三月初仍有持续的霜冻。寒冷时间较短的桃子品种通常开花时间较早,这使它们很容易成为寒冷春季气温的受害者。)”,以及第五段“In response, the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) is experimenting with hybrid varieties that achieve that delicate balance. (作为回应,美国农业部正在试验杂交品种,以实现这种微妙的平衡。)”可知,成功培育耐温桃子品种的关键是在低温和正常开花之间的平衡,使这些因寒冷时间变短而提前开花的桃树能扛得住春季的霜冻低温。故选D项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“‘We’ve got to keep changing as the environment changes,’ Georgia farmer Lawton Pearson said. ‘But it’s not something that scares us in the slightest about the future of growing peaches. It’s just something you’ve got to deal with.’ (佐治亚州农民劳顿·皮尔森说,‘我们必须随着环境的变化而不断改变。但这并不是让我们对桃子种植的未来感到害怕的事情。这是你必须要处理的事情。’)”可知,Lawton Pearson对未来种植桃持有积极态度,故选C项。
D
One key element of human language is semantics (语义). Scientists had long thought that unlike our words, animal vocalizations (发声) were involuntary, renecting the emotional state of the animal without conveying any other information. But over the last four decades, numerous studies have shown that various animals have distinct calls with specific meanings.
Many bird species use different alarm calls. Japanese tits, which nest in tree holes, have one call that causes their baby birds to get down to avoid being pulled out of the nest by crows, and another call for tree snakes that sends them jumping out of the nest entirely. Siberian jays vary their calls depending on whether an enemy is seen looking for food or actively attacking — and each call gets a different response from other nearby birds.
Two recent studies suggest that the order of some birds’ vocalizations may impact their meaning. Though the idea is still controversial, this could represent a basic form of the rules governing the order and combination of words and elements in human language known as syntax (句法), as illustrated by the classic “dog bites man” vs. “man bites dog” example.
Even if some birds share basic aspects of human language, we still know very little about what’s actually going on in their minds. Most animal communication research has focused on describing signals and behavior, which on the surface can look a lot like human behavior. Determining if the underlying cognitive (认知的) processes driving the behavior are also similar is much more challenging, as at the heart of this question is intentionality: Are animals merely reacting to their environment, or do they intend to convey information to one another?
12. What was scientists’ long-held belief about animal vocalizations?
A. They conveyed no emotion. B. They were semantically related.
C. They varied greatly with species. D. They expressed no intended meaning.
13. How does the author develop paragraph 2?
A. By listing data. B. By giving examples.
C. By providing definition. D. By making comparisons.
14. What does the underlined word ”this” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. What birds’ vocalizations mean. B. How rules govern human language.
C. What the two recent studies indicate. D. How bird’s vocalizations are combined.
15. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A. Shared aspects of human and birds’ languages.
B. Focus of most animal communication research.
C. Underlying, cognitive processes of birds’ vocalizations.
D. Insufficient knowledge about birds’ communication intentionality.
D 13. B 14. D 15. D
根据第一段第二句“Scientists had long thought that unlike our words, animal vocalizations (发声) were involuntary, renecting the emotional state of the animal without conveying any other information.(长期以来,科学家们一直认为,与我们的语言不同,动物的发声是不由自主的,它再现了动物的情绪状态,而不传达任何其他信息。)”
,第二句“Japanese tits, which nest in tree holes, have one call that causes their baby birds to get down to avoid being pulled out of the nest by crows, and another call for tree snakes that sends them jumping out of the nest entirely.(在树洞筑巢的日本山雀,有一种叫声能让它们的幼鸟下来,以免被乌鸦拉出巢外,另一种叫声能让它们完全跳出巢外。)”和第三句“Siberian jays vary their calls depending on whether an enemy is seen looking for food or actively attacking — and each call gets a different response from other nearby birds.(西伯利亚松鸦根据敌人是在寻找食物还是在主动攻击而改变它们的叫声,而每一种叫声都会从附近的其他鸟类那里得到不同的回应。)”
根据第三段第一句“Two recent studies suggest that the order of some birds’ vocalizations may impact their meaning.(最近的两项研究表明,一些鸟类发声的顺序可能会影响它们的意义。)”和第二句中的“could represent a basic form of the rules governing the order and combination of words and elements in human language known as syntax (句法), as illustrated by the classic “dog bites man” vs. “man bites dog” example(可能代表了一种基本形式的规则,即控制人类语言中单词和元素的顺序和组合,即语法,如经典的“狗咬人”和“人咬狗”的例子所示)”可知,this指代的是鸟的叫声的组合方式。
根据最后一段第一句“Even if some birds share basic aspects of human language, we still know very little about what’s actually going on in their minds.(即使一些鸟类分享人类语言的基本方面,我们仍然对它们的思想知之甚少。)”和最后一句“Determining if the underlying cognitive (认知的)processes driving the behavior are also similar is much more challenging, as at the heart of this question is intentionality: Are animals merely reacting to their environment, or do they intend to convey information to one another?(确定驱动行为的潜在认知过程是否相似则更具挑战性,因为这个问题的核心是意向性;动物仅仅是对环境做出反应,还是它们有意向彼此传递信息?)”
Loneliness is an emotion. We probably all experience it at some point, but loneliness is very complex and unique to each of us.
___16___ . Being alone is a choice. But feeling lonely isn’t something we impose (强加于) on ourselves. In other words, you want to be around people, but something is making you feel unwanted, empty, or isolated, so you’re not having the meaningful connection you seek.
When does it become a problem? ___17___ , it can turn into a mental and physical health problem. It can be a symptom or cause of depression. It can affect self-worth. ___18___ . That’s why chronic (长期的) loneliness is linked to increased risk of high blood pressure, obesity and even other serious disorder.
To manage loneliness, you should accept and acknowledge it. Loneliness is a valid feeing. Don’t brush it under the carpet, as that doesn’t help solve the problem. ___19___ Smell a flower or take a walk in nature, for example. Celebrate each small achievement. When you decide to change things and seek a connection with others, consider a like-minded group. A client of mine joined a sewing group and it was very successful.
The best approach to helping someone who is lonely is to sensitively ask how they are and what they’re doing, and listen to the answer in a non-judgmental way. If you want to invite them to do something with you, do it. If they say no, don’t be discouraged from asking again. ___20___
A. Seek joy in little things
B. If you try to get over loneliness
C. They might need time before feeling ready to say yes

下文“Being alone is a choice. But feeling lonely isn’t something we impose (强加于) on ourselves.(独处是一种选择。
上文“It can affect self-worth.(它可能会影响自我价值)”提到了孤独对我们的影响,F选项“你也可能会转向食物,而没有动力去锻炼”也是一种孤独可能对我们产生的影响,且引出下文“That’s why chronic (长期的) loneliness is linked to increased risk of high blood pressure, obesity and even other serious disorder.(这就是为什么长期的孤独会增加患高血压、肥胖甚至其他严重疾病的风险)”。故选F项。
上文“Loneliness is a valid feeing. Don’t brush it under the carpet, as that doesn’t help solve the problem.(孤独是一种合理的感觉。不要把它掩盖起来,那样无助于解决问题)”提到了不要掩盖孤独感,下文“Smell a flower or take a walk in nature, for example.(例如,闻闻花香或在大自然中散步)”提到了解决方法,由此可知,我们应该主动寻找快乐以赶走孤独,所以A选项“从小事中寻找快乐”也是一种解决方法,引出下文具体的方法。故选A项。
上文“If you want to invite them to do something with you, do it. If they say no, don’t be discouraged from asking again.(如果你想邀请他们和你一起做什么,就去做吧。如果他们说不,不要气馁,不要再问了)”提到了邀请的问题被拒的情况,C选项“他们可能需要一些时间才能同意”解释了原因,和上文构成因果关系。故选C项。

It was now December twenty-fourth. So here we were, travelling about 2,000 miles and finally reaching our destination San Diego at last. We’d rented a room in a small, well-worn motel (汽车旅馆) near the beach.
Six-year-old Chat frowned. “There is no Christmas tree, Mommy! But it’s almost Christmas. How can Santa know where to put our presents without a Christmas tree?”
“Yes, a Christmas tree!” echoed (附和) his four-year-old brother Jay. “I want a Christmas tree!”
”Couldn’t we just get a small Christmas tree and set it up in this room somewhere?“ asked Chat. ”That way, Santa Claus will know where to put our presents.”
I sighed, looking around at our squeezed-in beds and bags. “But, honey, the five of us can barely move around in here with all our suitcases and everything. I’m sorry, but we just don’t have the room for something extra like a Christmas tree.”
Our oldest son, seven-year-old Robin, had been listening quietly. Suddenly, he grinned (咧嘴笑). “Yes, we do.”
I stared. “Where?”
He pointed to our motel room’s door. “Right there—on the back of that door. Please, Mommy, if we can’t get a real tree, can’t we make a pretend tree and put it up there? Then Santa will know we love Christmas just as much as he does.”
“And leave us some presents, too!” Chat added.
Make a tree? I looked at the newspaper that I had bought when I was searching for places to rent. If I taped some of those pages together, cut them out into a tree shape, and bought some poster paint and brushes at the store next door…
Now, I was grinning, too. “Okay, boys! Ready to make the very best Christmas tree in the whole wide world?”
“Yes!”

The next morning, I heard, “Mommy! Daddy! Look! Santa did find us after all!”
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
So we bought some paint and then taped and cut and painted. 2 hours later, our DIY Christmas tree stood behind the door, with our handmade ornaments around it. Our boys folded their hands and began to pray. “Time for bed!” urged my husband, promising that Santa would definitely bring some presents to those who behaved well. Not until all of them fell asleep did we quietly take Christmas gifts from our suitcases, put them into the socks and placed the socks under the tree. Without dazzling lights and coulorful lights, it may not be the biggest or shiniest Christmas tree, but the primitive tree was the most special one to us.
The next morning, I heard, “Mommy! Daddy! Look! Santa did find us after all!” “Yeah, And Santa left us presents!” Then I found the three boys running to the Christmas tree eagerly and unbelievably, checking the presents in the socks. Considering our financial situation, what we could prepare for them were ordinary but practical. Exposed to the love of our family, I knew that this Christmas would be one that we would never forget. It wasn’t about the size of the tree or the price of the gifts, but the love and joy that we all shared together that made it truly special.

A. To introduce the topic.
C Memories of the Freedlunds D. Comfort brought by Luckier People

“Yes!”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
