Unit 3 To be a good learner-Welcome to the unit This unit focuses on the theme of "To be a good learner". The "Welcome to the unit" part serves as an introduction, aiming to engage students in thinking about learning. It starts with some Chinese sayings related to learning, such as "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime", "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step", and "Studying is like rowing a boat against moving water; if you don't move forward, you will fall behind". These sayings are used to stimulate students' thoughts about the nature of learning, like the importance of self - learning, taking the first step, and continuous progress. Then, students are guided to discuss the most important factors for successful learning through pair - work and individual thinking, which helps them express their opinions in English. 教学目标 Students will be able to understand and use vocabulary related to learning strategies, such as "drive", "guide", "manage", "fall behind". Master sentence patterns for expressing opinions and agreements, like "For me...", "I agree...", "That's right...". 教学重难点 1. Key Points Let students understand and remember the vocabulary and sentence patterns related to learning. Guide students to actively participate in discussions and express their views on learning factors. 2. Difficult Points Help students think deeply about the meaning of Chinese sayings and connect them with real - life learning situations. Encourage students to have in - depth and logical discussions in English. 1. New Words learner n. 学习者(learn v. 学习) feed vt. 为…… 提供食物;喂养(feed on 以…… 为食) fish vi. 钓鱼,捕鱼 n. 鱼;鱼肉(go fishing 去钓鱼) lifetime n. 一生,有生之年(during one’s lifetime 在某人一生中) journey n. 旅程,旅行(a long trip) single adj. 单个的;单身的(a single step 一步) against prep. 逆,反对;倚靠;与…… 相反;撞(e.g., The rain was beating against the window.) fall behind 落后(be behind 表示状态) successful adj. 有成效的;成功的(success n. 成功;succeed vi. 成功;do sth successfully 成功地做某事;succeed in doing sth 成功做某事) drive n. 冲劲;本能需求(have a strong drive to learn 有强烈的学习动力) guide vt. 指导;给某人领路(或导游)(guidance n.)(e.g., A good teacher will guide you on the right path.) manage v. 管理(manager n.)(manage to do sth 设法做成某事) 2. Sentence Patterns "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." "Studying is like rowing a boat against moving water; if you don't move forward, you will fall behind." "For me, one thing is to have a strong drive to learn." "I couldn't agree more." (否定 + 比较级 = 最高级) 教学过程 1. Lead - in (5 minutes) Greet the students and show some pictures of students studying in different ways, such as reading books, doing experiments, and discussing in groups. Ask students: "What do you think is the most important thing in learning?" Let several students answer. 2. Presentation of Chinese Sayings (10 minutes) Show the three Chinese sayings on the PPT one by one. First, show the Chinese characters, and then the English translations and explanations. For "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime": Explain that it means teaching someone the method is more important than directly giving help. Let students think about some examples in their study, like learning math. Is it better to be told the answers directly or to learn the problem - solving methods? For "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step": Explain that any big goal needs to start from the first small step. Ask students to share some of their goals and what the first step could be. For "Studying is like rowing a boat against moving water; if you don't move forward, you will fall behind": Explain that learning requires continuous effort. If we stop making progress, we will be left behind by others. Let students think about why some students' grades may decline if they relax for a while. 3. Vocabulary Teaching (10 minutes) Present the new words related to learning strategies on the PPT, such as "drive", "guide", "manage", "fall behind". Use pictures, examples, or short videos to help students understand the meanings. For "drive": Show a picture of a student who is very eager to learn and stays up late to study. Explain that this student has a strong drive to learn. For "guide": Show a picture of a teacher helping a student with his homework. Say "A good teacher will guide you on the right path." For "manage": Give an example like "He managed to finish his project on time although it was very difficult." Let students understand the meaning of "manage to do sth". For "fall behind": Show a picture of a runner who is left behind in a race. Say "If you don't study hard, you will fall behind in your class." After presenting the words, let students read the words aloud several times to practice pronunciation. 4. Pair - work Discussion (15 minutes) Present the topic on the PPT: "What do you think are the most important factors for successful learning?" Provide some example factors, such as "a strong drive to learn", "a good teacher to guide you", "good learning skills", "a proper learning plan", etc. Let students work in pairs to discuss. One student starts with "For me, one thing is...", and the other responds with "I agree/I don't agree. Because...". Walk around the classroom to listen to their discussions and offer help if necessary. After about 10 minutes, ask several pairs to come to the front of the class and share their discussions. The rest of the students listen and can ask questions or give their own opinions. 5. Summary and Homework (5 minutes) Summarize the key points of this class, including the Chinese sayings, new words, and the discussion about learning factors. Assign homework: Ask students to write a short passage about their own opinions on successful learning factors. They should use at least three new words and one Chinese saying they learned in this class. 教学反思 After this class, I found that students were quite interested in the Chinese sayings, which successfully aroused their enthusiasm for discussion. However, some students still had difficulties in expressing their complex ideas in English during the pair - work discussion. In the future, more oral practice activities should be designed to improve their speaking ability. Also, when teaching new words, more time could be spent on guiding students to use these words in sentences to strengthen their memory. Overall, this class laid a good foundation for the following learning content of this unit, but there is still room for improvement in teaching methods and students' language output. 2 / 37 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
