We all see the same moon. At the same time, she knew that access wasn’t created equal. Telescopes had been around for 400 years, but most children in Kenya had never looked through one. She thought she could change that. In 2014, she and her partner Daniel Chu Owen bought a telescope and started showing kids in Kenya what the stars looked like up close. Today, The Travelling Telescope program has reached about 200,000 kids. And during the COVID19 pandemic, it works to teach kids about space and rockets online, offering workshops on 3D modeling and astronomy to local schoolchildren.“It’s never been about these kids becoming astronomers-but it’s about all the different things astronomy can teach,” Ms. Murabana says. “There’s engineering and geology and math, and there’s also just an opportunity to question, to inquire and to be creative.” Growing up in Nairobi, Ms. Murabana never saw astronomy as a possible career path or even a potential hobby. “I always loved math and science, but I wasn’t exposed to astronomy,”she says. She studied economics in college, and then worked in marketing. But when she volunteered for science outreach programs, she saw the way astronomy seemed to make kids’ eyes from all walks of life light up. Soon, she began teaching kids about space through programs like Global HandsOn Universe, and completed a degree in an online master’s program in astronomy herself. At Hillcrest International Schools in Nairobi, preparatory head teacher Surbhi Vashisht says the telescope has been_a_big_hit with her students, 170 of whom have participated in the Travelling Telescope workshops: looking at the stars, building rockets, and virtually exploring the landscape of Mars. “The children enjoy the energy that Sue and Chu bring to the sessions,” she writes in an email. 1.What’s the purpose of The Travelling Telescope program? A.To open the door to science for kids in Kenya. B.To inspire kids to be astronomers in the future. C.To make telescopes affordable to most schools in Kenya. D.To promote the development of astronomy around the globe. 2.What contributes to Ms. Murabana’s change of her career path? A.Her experience as a volunteer. B.The love and support from Mr. Owen. C.Her completion of a master’s degree in astronomy. D.The unsatisfying education environment in Africa. 3.Which of the following can best replace the underlined part “been a big hit”? A.Gained favor. B.Become mysterious. C.Caused concern. D.Been of limited value. 4.What’s the text mainly about? A.A program bringing stars to children. B.An effort to create astronomy enthusiasts. C.A plan to improve the study of astronomy. D.A way to bring about equality in education. 【答案】1.A 2.A 3.A 4.A 【解析】本文是一篇说明文。 根据第二段“In 2014, she and her partner Daniel Chu Owen bought a telescope and started showing kids in Kenya what the stars looked like up close. Today, The Travelling Telescope program has reached about 200,000 kids. And during the COVID19 pandemic, it works to teach kids about space and rockets online, offering workshops on 3D modeling and astronomy to local schoolchildren. “It’s never been about these kids becoming astronomers-but it’s about all the different things astronomy can teach,” Ms. Murabana says. “There’s engineering and geology and math, and there’s also just an opportunity to question, to inquire and to be creative.” 故选A。 2. 根据第三段中“But when she volunteered for science outreach programs, she saw the way astronomy seemed to make kids’ eyes from all walks of life light up. Soon, she began teaching kids about space through programs like Global HandsOn Universe, and completed a degree in an online master’s program in astronomy herself. 故选A。 3. 根据最后一段“At Hillcrest International Schools in Nairobi, preparatory head teacher Surbhi Vashisht says the telescope has been_a_big_hit with her students, 170 of whom have participated in the Travelling Telescope workshops: looking at the stars, building rockets, and virtually exploring the landscape of Mars. “The children enjoy the energy that Sue and Chu bring to the sessions,” she writes in an email. A. D. Been of limited value价值有限。故选A。 4. 通读全文,尤其是第一段“Susan Murabana’s travelling telescope began with a simple revelation (被暴露的真相): We all have access to the sky. We all see the same moon. At the same time, she knew that access wasn’t created equal. Telescopes had been around for 400 years, but most children in Kenya had never looked through one. She thought she could change that. A。 Passage 2 Regardless of how famous they are, and despite the star treatment they receive, many celebrities make it a point to give back to charities. Some have even set up their own private foundations. Their widely publicised visits to troubled areas of the world help to raise awareness of issues such as famine and poverty. According to Jane Cooper of Unicef UK, celebrities have a unique ability to reach huge numbers of people, many of whom might not otherwise be engaged in charitable causes. She pointed out that famous faces had played a significant role in raising funds in recent years, and their energies had produced tangible results, such as enabling millions of children in poorer countries to attend school. But in spite of these successes, there is evidence to suggest that celebrity endorsement (代言) may be overrated. In a survey of members of the public to find out if celebrity involvement would encourage people to donate, researchers found that the impact was not as great as previously thought. When shown a list of well-known organisations and famous people who represent them, over half of respondents were unable to match the celebrity with the cause. What’s more, three quarters claimed that they didn’t respond to celebrity endorsement in any way. The survey also showed that a few names did stand out as being associated with particular charities. But the presence of a celebrity in a campaign, was not a significant factor when it came to a decision to donate time or money. Instead, the majority of people contribute because of personal connections in their lives and families which make a charity important to them. In another study aimed at young people, most participants cited a compelling (无法抗拒的) mission as their main motivation to give. The second most important drive was if a friend or peer recommended supporting a particular cause. Only two percent of respondents said they were motivated by celebrity endorsement. This seems to contradict the general assumption that teenagers are particularly influenced by famous people. One possible explanation is that there is a general fatigue (疲倦) with celebrity culture. There is also a suspicion that the stars are the ones who benefit most when they offer to do charity work. Some critiques have accused that celebrities might actually take attention away from issues by attracting more attention than the causes they represent. So taking all these issues into account, is it time for charities to rethink their campaign strategies and look for alternative ways to reach new audiences? Whichever point of view you favour, there seems to be opportunities for more research into how charity campaigns might develop relationships with celebrities to maximise their potential. This in turn will open up more engagement, and better targeted campaigns — which can only benefit those who really matter — the people and animals that are in need of assistance. 1.What does the underlined word “tangible” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A.Controversial. B.Celebrated. C.Definite. D.Temporarily. 2.Which of the following statements is correct according to Paragraph 2? A.Celebrity involvement is key to motivating people to donate. B.All people are not influenced by celebrities in charity donations. C.Most people contribute to charities because they are inspired by the family. D.None of the people believe celebrities make any difference to their donation. 3.The 3rd paragraph is mainly about ________. A.how young people react to celebrity culture B.who is to blame for taking attention away from charities C.what mainly motivates young people to be engaged in charitable giving D.why young people are rarely influenced by celebrities in charity donations 4.What is the author’s attitude towards celebrity doing charities? A.Objective. B.Positive. C.Negative. D.Unclear. 根据划线词后文“such as enabling millions of children in poorer countries to attend school(例如,能让贫困国家的数百万儿童能够上学)”可知,“让儿童上学”是具体、明确的成果,故划线词意思是“明确的”。故选C。 2. 根据第二段中“But in spite of these successes, there is evidence to suggest that celebrity endorsement (代言) may be overrated. In a survey of members of the public to find out if celebrity involvement would encourage people to donate, researchers found that the impact was not as great as previously thought. When shown a list of well- known organisations and famous people who represent them, over half of respondents were unable to match the celebrity with the cause. What’s more, three quarters claimed that they didn’t respond to celebrity endorsement in any way.(尽管取得了这些成功,但仍有证据表明名人代言可能被高估了。 根据第三段“In another study aimed at young people, most participants cited a compelling (无法抗拒的) mission as their main motivation to give. Some critiques have accused that celebrities might actually take attention away from issues by attracting more attention than the causes they represent.(在另一项针对年轻人的研究中,大多数参与者都将一个极具吸引力的使命视为他们捐赠的主要动机。 A。 Passage 3 In the tenth grade, I began working for free at a vet’s that was run by a friend. I wanted to get experience for what I thought would be my future job. However, on one particular Saturday morning I learnt something perhaps more important. The hospital was in the middle of one of the poorer sections of the city and some people could only pay for the most basic treatments. On this Saturday, a man and his young son, who was probably about 7 years old, walked in with a small cat in a cardboard box. There was something wrong with the cat’s left eye. But the man could not afford to pay for the cost of the medicine. He kept quiet for a while, and then he asked where the nearest animal shelter was. Hearing this, his son cried and started to argue with him. All of a sudden, an older woman who was sitting in the waiting room stood up, walked up to the counter, and told the man that she would pay for the cost. The man thanked her and the son got to keep a healthy cat. I always thought it was the right thing to help out a needy person, but I only saw people do acts of kindness on TV or in movies. What the woman did made me believe that these things do happen in real life, and quite often. Now, when I can’t decide whether to help someone who is in need, I remember this woman, and then I have the courage to step up to the plate. Sometimes other people follow. 1.For what purpose did the writer work at the vet’s? A.To help his friend. B.To make some pocket money. C.To gain some work experience. D.To learn more about society. 2.What would the man probably do with the cat if the woman didn’t help him? A.Take it home without treatment. B.Give it to someone on the street. C.Give it to the woman. D.Give it up to the animal shelter. 3.We can learn from this passage that . A.the man doesn’t like keeping a cat B.the older woman often helps people out C.the man’s son didn’t agree to the man’s first decision D.the hospital often asks for too much money 【答案】1.C 2.D 3.C 【解析】本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲的是作者在宠物医院工作时经历的一件事:一位老太太帮助了一对没钱为猫支付医药费的父子。 根据第一段“I wanted to get experience for what I thought would be my future job.(我想为将来的工作积累经验。)” 根据第二段“He kept quiet for a while, and then he asked where the nearest animal shelter was.(他沉默了一会儿,然后问最近的动物收容所在哪里。)” 根据第二段“Hearing this, his son cried and started to argue with him.(儿子听了,哭了起来,跟他吵起来。)” C。 Passage 4 In Tallahassee, Florida, there’s a high school science teacher named Yennifer Castillo, who reshapes not just classrooms but college students’ future. For Castillo, teaching is to make a dream come true. She devotes herself to decorating her classroom each summer, inspired by the teachers she had when growing up. She documents her beautifully handmade classroom decorations based on favorite childhood shows and movies such as Lilo & Stitch and posts videos on social media, making herself a hit. She believes in the power of applying social media to inspiring others. However, it is far from easy. She says it typically takes the entire summer to prepare, and she spends between $300 and $400 each school year. But it’s totally worth it, as she adds, to make her students welcome and comfortable and know someone takes the time to invite them in. Castillo is also making a lasting impact beyond her school walls, with her masterpiece Annual College Essentials Basket Giveaway. Since 2018, she has collected and donated baskets filled with necessities like sheets, comforters, and school supplies to first-year college students. “I started this giveaway because I know firsthand how tough it can be to start college without the basics.” Castillo says, drawing from her own story. Her mission is clear: to reduce financial burdens and remind them they’re never alone. This year, she’s invited the world to join her through a GoFundMe campaign, expanding the ripple (连锁反应) of kindness. As Castillo puts it, “It doesn’t matter how far you go in life. You can always give back to your community. If everyone does just one act of kindness, the world will be a better place.” 1.What makes Castillo popular on social media? A.Making donations to students. B.Posting comments on movies. C.Sharing her decoration videos. D.Displaying her growth stories. 2.What does Castillo think of her decorations in the classroom? A.Showy but thoughtful. B.Self-created and low-cost. C.Traditional and invaluable. D.Time-consuming but rewarding. 3.Why did Castillo start the Annual College Essentials Basket Giveaway? A.To achieve her childhood dream. B.To seek more aid for her project. C.To back college freshmen in need. D.To broaden social media influence. 4.What can we learn from Castillo? A.Still waters run deep. B.No act of kindness is ever wasted. C.Wealth makes charity. D.No way is impossible to courage. 根据第二段中“She documents her beautifully handmade classroom decorations based on favorite childhood shows and movies such as Lilo & Stitch and posts videos on social media, making herself a hit.(她根据自己童年时期喜欢的节目和电影,如《星际宝贝》,记录下自己精心手工制作的教室装饰,并将视频发布到社交媒体上,使自己大受欢迎)”可知,她在社交媒体上分享自己的装饰视频使她受欢迎。故选C。 2. 根据第三段中“She says it typically takes the entire summer to prepare, and she spends between $300 and $400 each school year. But it’s totally worth it, as she adds, to make her students welcome and comfortable and know someone takes the time to invite them in.(她说通常要花整个夏天来准备,每个学年她要花300到400美元。但这是完全值得的,她补充说,这样做是为了让她的学生感到受欢迎和舒适,并让他们知道有人愿意花时间邀请他们进来)”可知,Castillo认为装饰教室耗时但值得。故选D。 3.细节理解题。根据第四段中“Since 2018, she has collected and donated baskets filled with necessities like sheets, comforters, and school supplies to first-year college students. “I started this giveaway because I know firsthand how tough it can be to start college without the basics.” Castillo says, drawing from her own story.(自2018年以来,她一直在收集并向大学新生捐赠装满床单、被子和学校用品等必需品的篮子。“我发起这个捐赠活动是因为我亲身体会到没有基本生活用品上大学有多艰难。”Castillo以自己的经历为例说道)”可知,她发起这个活动是为了帮助有需要的大一新生。故选C。 4.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“As Castillo puts it, “It doesn’t matter how far you go in life. You can always give back to your community. If everyone does just one act of kindness, the world will be a better place.(正如Castillo所说:“人生无论走多远,你都可以回馈社区。如果每个人都做一件善事,世界将会变得更美好。”)”可知,我们可以从Castillo身上学到“善举从不白费”的道理。故选B。 Passage 5 As a young girl growing up in France, Sarah Toumi dreamed of becoming a leader who could make the world a better place. Her passion for helping others was awakened when, from the age of nine, she accompanied her Tunisian father to his birthplace in the east of the country during holidays. There she organized homework clubs and activities for children. Toumi witnessed firsthand the destructive effect of desertification. “Within 10 years rich farmers became worse off, and in 10 years from now they will be poor. I wanted to stop the Sahara in its tracks.” A decrease in average rainfall and an increase in the severity of droughts (干旱) have led to an estimated 75 percent of Tunisia’s agricultural lands being threatened by desertification. Toumi recognized that farming practices needed to be changed. She is confident that small land areas can bring large returns if farmers are able to adapt by planting sustainable crops, using new technologies for water treatment and focusing on natural products and fertilizers (肥料) rather than chemicals. In 2012, Toumi consolidated her dream to fight the desert. She moved to Tunisia, and set up a program named Acacias for All to put her sustainable farming philosophy into action. “I want to show young people in rural areas that they can create opportunities where they are. Nobody is better able to understand the impact of desertification and climate change than somebody who is living with no access to water.” By September 2016, more than 130,000 acacia trees had been planted on 20 pilot farms, with farmers recording a 60 percent survival rate. Toumi estimates that some 3 million acacia trees are needed to protect Tunisia’s farmland. In the next couple of years, Toumi hopes to extend the program to Algeria and Morocco. 1.How did Toumi’s holiday trips to Tunisia influence her? A.They made her decide to leave the country. B.They helped her better understand her father. C.They fired her enthusiasm for helping others. D.They destroyed her dream of being a teacher. 2.What is the main cause of the desertification of Tunisia’s farmland? A.Low rainfall. B.Soil pollution. C.Cold weather. D.Forest damage. 3.Why did Toumi set up the Acacias for All program in Tunisia? A.To create job opportunities for young people. B.To help the children obtain a basic education. C.To persuade the farmers not to use fertilizers. D.To facilitate the protection of the farmland. 4.Which can be the best title for the text? A.Saving Water in Tunisia B.Planting Trees of Native Species C.Holding back the Sahara D.Fighting Poverty in North Africa 【答案】1.C 2.A 3.D 4.C 【解析】本文是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了Sarah Toumi从小受父亲影响,立志帮助他人,在目睹突尼斯土地沙漠化的严重问题后,她积极采取行动,通过建立可持续农业项目来对抗沙漠化,保护农田的故事。 1.细节理解题。根据第一段中“Her passion for helping others was awakened when, from the age of nine, she accompanied her Tunisian father to his birthplace in the east of the country during holidays. There she organized homework clubs and activities for children. (从9岁起,每逢节假日,她就会陪突尼斯裔的父亲回到该国东部的老家。在那里,她对帮助他人的热情被点燃了。她为当地的孩子们组织作业辅导俱乐部和各种活动)”可知,Toumi在假期跟随父亲回到突尼斯的经历激发了她帮助他人的热情。故选C项。 2.细节理解题。根据第二段中“A decrease in average rainfall and an increase in the severity of droughts (干旱) have led to an estimated 75 percent of Tunisia’s agricultural lands being threatened by desertification. (平均降雨量的减少和干旱程度的加剧,导致突尼斯估计有75%的农田受到沙漠化的威胁)”可知,突尼斯农田沙漠化的主要原因是降雨量低。故选A项。 3.推理判断题。根据第四段中“She moved to Tunisia, and set up a program named Acacias for All to put her sustainable farming philosophy into action. “I want to show young people in rural areas that they can create opportunities where they are. Nobody is better able to understand the impact of desertification and climate change than somebody who is living with no access to water.” (她搬到了突尼斯,并设立了一个名为“全民金合欢”的项目,以将她的可持续农业理念付诸实践。“我想向农村地区的年轻人展示,他们可以就地创造机会。没有人比那些生活在缺水环境中的人更能理解荒漠化和气候变化的影响。”)”以及第五段中“Toumi estimates that some 3 million acacia trees are needed to protect Tunisia’s farmland. (Toumi估计,保护突尼斯的农田需要大约300万棵金合欢树)”可知,Toumi在突尼斯设立“全民金合欢”项目是为了通过种植金合欢树来保护农田,对抗沙漠化。故选D项。 4.主旨大意题。根据第二段“Toumi witnessed firsthand the destructive effect of desertification. “Within 10 years rich farmers became worse off, and in 10 years from now they will be poor. In April 1998, his wife suffered from an operation on her heart, which leads to some serious thinking about life’s purpose. Not long after the surgery, Tim saw a brochure depicting Imagination Library, a campaign launched by Dolly Parton’s foundation that mailed a book monthly to children from birth to age five in the singer’s home county. “I thought, maybe Linda and I could do something like this when we retire,” Tim recalls. Consequently, he stuck the brochure on his wall as a motivational thing. Five years later, now retired and with that brochure still kept on the wall, Tim clicked on imaginationlibrary.com. The program had been opened up to partners who could devote themselves to the cause. The quality of the books was a priority to the Richters. Rather than sign up online, they packed their bags for Dollywood, the organization by Dolly Parton for a look-see. “We didn’t want to give the children trash,” says Linda. The books, reviewed each year by teachers, literacy specialists, and Dollywood board members, included classics such as Ezra Jack Keats’s The Snowy Day and newer titles like Anna Dewdney’s Llama Llama series. Satisfied, the couple set up the Richter Family Foundation and work on. Since 2004, they have shipped more than 12,200 books to preschoolers in their area. Megan Williams, a mother of four, is more than appreciative: “This program introduces us to titles I’ve never heard of.” The Richters spend about $400 a month sending books to 200 children. “Some people sit on their bottom and wait to die,” says Tim. “Others get as busy as they can in the time they have left.” 1.What inspired Tim’s action to do something for children? A.Tim’s teaching. B.Linda’s operation. C.Megan’s encouragement. D.Patron’s foundation. 2.Why did the Richters select the books carefully? A.To become Imagination Library’s partner. B.To meet the children’s requirement. C.To guarantee the quality of books. D.To win the praise of board members. 3.What is the attitude of Megan towards the program? A.Critical. B.Doubtful. C.Supportive. D.Contradictory. 4.Which of the following best describes Tim? A.Changeable and creative. B.Generous and reliable. C.Imaginative and respectable. D.Traditional and helpful. 【答案】1.D 2.C 3.C 4.B 【解析】本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了蒂姆・里克特和他的妻子琳达受启发为儿童捐赠图书的故事。 1.细节理解题。根据第二段“Not long after the surgery, Tim saw a brochure depicting Imagination Library, a campaign launched by Dolly Parton’s foundation that mailed a book monthly to children from birth to age five in the singer’s home county. “I thought, maybe Linda and I could do something like this when we retire,” Tim recalls. Unit 3 The world meets China Teenagers should actively participate in volunteer service to develop a sense of social responsibility. 青少年应该积极参与志愿服务,培养社会责任感。 By engaging in voluntary work, young people can make a positive difference in the community. 通过参与志愿工作,年轻人可以为社区带来积极的改变。 Volunteering not only helps others but also enriches our own lives. 志愿服务不仅帮助他人,也丰富了我们自己的生活。 Young people have the responsibility to care for the environment and promote sustainable development. 年轻人有责任关爱环境,促进可持续发展。 Participating in charitable activities can cultivate teenagers' empathy and compassion. 参与慈善活动可以培养青少年的同理心和同情心。 Teenagers should support the disadvantaged and work towards a more equal society. 青少年应该支持弱势群体,努力实现一个更平等的社会。 Volunteering provides an opportunity for young people to develop their teamwork and leadership skills. 志愿服务为年轻人提供了发展团队合作和领导能力的机会。 By taking on social responsibilities, teenagers can become active and responsible citizens. 通过承担社会责任,青少年可以成为积极负责的公民。 The spirit of volunteerism should be encouraged and promoted among young people. 应该在年轻人中鼓励和推广志愿服务精神。 Young people can make a significant contribution to society through their actions and efforts. 年轻人可以通过他们的行动和努力为社会做出重要贡献。 It is meaningful for us to participate in such volunteer activities. 参与这样的志愿活动对我们来说很有意义。 We are planning to organize a charity event to raise money for the poor. 我们正计划组织一场慈善活动为穷人筹款。 Many people are willing to offer their help to those in need. 许多人愿意向有需要的人提供帮助。 The volunteer work we did last week brought great joy to the elderly in the nursing home. 我们上周做的志愿工作给养老院的老人带来了极大的快乐。 Through volunteering, I have learned how to communicate and cooperate with different people. 通过志愿服务,我学会了如何与不同的人沟通和合作。 必备词块 volunteer service /voluntary work 志愿服务 community service 社区服务 volunteer spirit 志愿精神 charity event 慈善活动 make a charity donation 进行慈善捐赠 charity organization 慈善组织 help the needy 帮助有需要的人 care for the elderly 关爱老人 support the disadvantaged 支持弱势群体 environmental protection 环境保护 participate in volunteer service 参与志愿服务 organize volunteer service activities 组织志愿服务活动 sign up for volunteer activities 报名参加志愿活动 join a volunteer team 加入志愿者团队 devote oneself to volunteer service 投身志愿服务 take care of the elderly who live alone 照顾孤寡老人 tutor poor children in their schoolwork 辅导贫困儿童功课 accompany people with disabilities 陪伴残障人士 publicize environmental protection knowledge 宣传环保知识 clean up public areas 清理公共区域 实战演练 Passage 1 Susan Murabana’s travelling telescope began with a simple revelation (被暴露的真相): We all have access to the sky. Passage 2 Regardless of how famous they are, and despite the star treatment they receive, many celebrities make it a point to give back to charities. B.Positive. C.Negative. D.Unclear. Passage 3 In the tenth grade, I began working for free at a vet’s that was run by a friend. A.the man doesn’t like keeping a cat B.the older woman often helps people out C.the man’s son didn’t agree to the man’s first decision D.the hospital often asks for too much money Passage 4 In Tallahassee, Florida, there’s a high school science teacher named Yennifer Castillo, who reshapes not just classrooms but college students’ future. Passage 5 As a young girl growing up in France, Sarah Toumi dreamed of becoming a leader who could make the world a better place. A.Saving Water in Tunisia B.Planting Trees of Native Species C.Holding back the Sahara D.Fighting Poverty in North Africa Passage 6 Tim Richter and his wife, Linda, had taught for more than 30 years near Buffalo, New York, he in computers, she in special education. “Teaching means everything to us,” Tim would say.
