Passage 1
The Danu Festival, also known as the Ancestral Mother Festival or the Yao New Year, is one of the grandest traditional festivals of the Yao ethnic group. It is scheduled for the 29th of the fifth lunar month. However, the Yao people don’t celebrate this festival annually. They only hold the festival once in two or three, or even five years.
Before the Danu Festival, all the Yao families will clean up their houses, prepare sticky rice cakes and rice wine and slaughter (屠宰) pigs and lambs to entertain their relatives and friends with lavish food and dishes. On the festival day, they will gather at the village common ground, singing, dancing, beating copper drums, blowing suona horn, performing martial arts and playing ball games.
There is a widely spreading legend that tells about the origin of this festival. In the far ancient time, there were two great magic mountains, one called Buluoxi and the other called Miluotuo, facing each other. Every year they became a little bit closer. So after 995 years, the two mountains were actually approaching each other. On the 29th of the fifth lunar month of this year, a deafening thunderbolt (霹雳) suddenly struck the earth. Exactly at the same time, the two mountains were cracked. A man called Buluoxi came out from the mountain Buluoxi, while a woman called Miluotuo came out from the mountain sharing the same name. They married and gave birth to three daughters.
When Miluotuo was aged, her eldest daughter, carrying ploughs and harrows, settled down in plains and lived on cultivation. Her offspring are the Han people. The second-eldest daughter left with a burden of books and her children fostered the Zhuang ethnic group. ★The youngest daughter, who became the ancestor of the Yao nationality, took millet and hoes (锄头) and planted different kinds of crops inside mountains.
Since then, on every 29th of the fifth lunar month, the birthday of Miluotuo, the three daughters carried lavish gifts and came back home to join their mother and celebrate harvest. This finally evolves into a festival celebrated by the Yao people.

Passage 2
When the Qingming Festival, or Tomb Sweeping Day, approaches each spring, one particular delicacy begins to appear in supermarkets and bakeries all over the country: qingtuan, a sweet, jade-colored treat eaten to commemorate the dead.
“In Chinese culture, it's really important that, as you go through life, you always honor and remember your ancestors,” said Lillian Luk, the Shanghai-born-and-raised founder of the London pop-up Shanghai Supper Club. During the Qingming Festival people all over China embark on pilgrimages to their deceased loved ones’ burial sites to sweep the graves, burn incense and present offerings.
These green dumplings are now popular all over the country, but they originally hailed from eastern China's coastal Jiangnan region, which includes Shanghai and parts of surrounding provinces like Jiangsu and Zhejiang. Rice plantations flourish in this area, and the crop’ s abundance explains the regional popularity of rice-based treats, from ci fan tuan (sticky rice enveloping fried dough) to nuo mi ou (lotus root stuffed with sticky rice).
Made with glutinous rice flour, qingtuan dough is emerald-green because of the addition of mugwort, a fragrant herb that imparts a grassy aroma and is best picked in spring. “Mugwort also gives the qingtuan a nice medicinal benefit. It's meant to lower blood pressure,” said Luk, who now makes and sells the verdant treats at her pop-up restaurant when the Qingming Festival rolls around.
In recent years, Luk has observed qingtuan evolving, with variations from dumplings dyed green with matcha to ones filled with custard or sweet potato. While she appreciates these innovations for engaging younger generations, her favorite remains the traditional creamy red bean paste version she grew up eating. “I try to throw it back to an earlier time when things were done in a simpler way,” she said. “Sometimes there's a reason something has been around for a long time.”
Sharing qingtuan allows Luk to introduce Londoners to a Chinese holiday custom and promote Shanghainese cuisine, which is less recognized abroad than Sichuan or Cantonese food. The unexpected benefit of her pop-up restaurant is seeing her children become excited and curious about their cultural heritage. “I've unintentionally connected my kids to their roots,” she said. Eating qingtuan just once a year makes it more special for them.
1.What cultural value does eating traditional qingtuan emphasize?
A.Medicinal benefits. B.Youth's flavor preferences.
C.Ancestral remembrance. D.The dominance of regional rice.
2.What trend do modern variations of qingtuan reflect?
A.Emphasis on healthier eating. B.Adapting to the tastes of young people.
C.Reinforcing traditional values. D.Reducing the content of glutinous rice.
3.What is the main reason behind Luk's affection for traditional qingtuan?
A.Her vivid childhood memories. B.Her professional background.
C.Her deep commercial interests. D.Her sense of cultural responsibility.
4.What was beyond Luk's expectation in sharing her qingtuan in London?
A.Developing her kids’ interest in Chinese culture.
B.Promoting Londoners to follow a holiday custom.
C.Recognizing Jiangnan's cuisines as regional styles.
D.Making qingtuan become a non-culture heritage.
Passage 3
When spring arrives in the mountains of Tengchong and Lianghe, the Hua Lisu anticipate their major annual event, Daogan Festival (Climbing the Sword Ladder), held on the 8th day of the 2nd lunar month. The festival, which honors Ming frontier general Wang Ji, begins with a “sea of fire” ritual the night before. At that time, Lisu men were employed as border troops and valued courage in warfare. General Wang Ji was famed for his bravery, able to walk through fire and climb on swords. During Daogan Festival, the village’s bravest men emulate this legendary hero.
On the night before the sword ladder is raised, fires burn on the outskirts of Lisu villages, creating the “sea of fire” of hot, burning coals. Lisu men dash across the glowing embers. Then, having made their run, they display the unscorched soles of their bare feet. The next day, the ladder is erected at noon. A carnival atmosphere with snack stalls and dice games prevails nearby. When the ladder has been erected and secured to the stakes on the ground, the next task, which takes over an hour, is to fix the machetes, sharp side up, on the rungs.
The first climber, an older man ascends the 60 swords slowly. At the top, he grabs flags, lights firecrackers, and throws the flagpoles down. Before he starts descending, the next climber begins his ascent. About midway up the ladder is a narrow platform where climbers pause to let each other pass. Upon reaching the bottom, climbers proudly show their uncut feet. The priest at the base of the ladder rubs their soles with ashes and offers a small cup of refreshing liquor. No public applause accompanies the completion of the performance and in fact only a dozen or so men will make the attempt.
None of those in attendance is oblivious of the dangers involved in this act. Perhaps the crowd’s silence is inspired by awe. To ensure safety, the chief priest performs ritual gestures to war d off threats. After the last climber descends, the priest, some climbers, and their wives form a ring and dance around the ladder to traditional Lisu music for about 20 minutes. The crowd then disperses, and the ladder will be taken down the next day.
1.Why do the Lisu people celebrate the Daogan Festival?
A.To celebrate the victory of wars. B.To memorize a brave general.
C.To inspire courage in Lisu children. D.To honor the wisdom of their ancestors.
2.What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.The preparations for the festival. B.The measures for climbing safely.
C.The performing courses of climbers. D.The different stages of the performance.
3.How do people respond when a climber succeeds?
A.By keeping silent. B.By cheering loudly.
C.By applauding in chorus. D.By drinking refreshing liquor.
4.What does the underlined phrase “is oblivious of” mean in the last paragraph?
A.Is aware of. B.Is proud of. C.Is ignorant of. D.Is afraid of.
Passage 4
The UK has many strange traditions. One is Pancake Day. This tradition comes from Shrove Tuesday. It is a Christian tradition before the start of Lent(大斋期). On that day, people across the UK make and eat pancakes in order to use up the food they have in their houses before the start of Lent.
Pancakes are large and thin and can be topped with either salty or sweet ingredients. People make pancakes in their homes but you might also find that some schools or businesses hold special Pancake Day events, one of which is the pancake race.
In a typical pancake race, competitors have to run holding a frying pan (平底锅) with a pancake in it. As competitors run, they have to throw the pancake in the air so that it flips and lands back in the pan on the other side. The winner is the first to reach the finish line, although they should also be careful to make sure that the pancake is complete and that it hasn't broken along the way.
One of the most famous pancake races is the Rehab Parliamentary Pancake Race. The race is a competition between two teams— one team of Members of Parliament(MPs), and one team of journalists — most of whom take part in the race wearing their work suits! The race is shown on the news and covered on TV all around the world. And as well as a bit of fun, the race is also held for a good cause. It draws people's attention to the charity Rehab, which works with people with disabilities and others who suffer from social exclusion.
Another important part of the race is the official starter chosen to announce the start of the race. This is seen as a prestigious role and is usually given to a British news presenter. But whoever is chosen usually has a hard time trying to control the race— someone cheats in the race each year.
1.Why do the British people eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday?
A.To prepare food for the coming Lent. B.To make a wish for the coming new year.
C.To run out of their food before the start of Lent. D.To share food with people with disabilities.
2.What do competitors do in a pancake race?
A.Compete to win the biggest pancake. B.Try to make pancakes as fast as possible.
C.Compete to make the most delicious pancake. D.Try to run fast while keeping pancakes complete.
3.What can we learn about the Rehab Parliamentary Pancake Race?
A.It has raised lots of money for the charity Rehab. B.Only people in London could watch it on TV.
C.It might attract lots of attention worldwide. D.Many disabled people have taken part in it.
4.What does the underlined word “prestigious” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Respectable. B.Competitive. C.Traditional. D.Serious.
Passage 5
Around the world there are some festivals that for some of us may sound bizarre .
In England they celebrate the rolling cheese race, which occurs every year during the last Monday in May. This festival’s characteristic is a contest where an official rolls cheese down a steep hill and festivalgoers go chasing after it. The winner is the first one to reach and catch the cheese.
Another festival celebrated in England is the world championship of grimaces (鬼脸). It is a celebration that dates back to 1297 and is celebrated during the month of September. The task is to perform the best grimace using anything you can to win.
The worldwide championship of wife lifting is celebrated in Finland. The game is based on Viking traditions where a man should carry away his neighbour’s wife. According to the rules, any woman above 17 is considered as a wife, so if you are within this age, take care while visiting this country during the month of July.
Many of you have watched Pirates of the Caribbean and have known something about pirates. The 19th of September has been declared worldwide as the day to talk like a pirate. Plenty of people have celebrated it thanks to the publicity (宣传) on the Internet.
First staged in 1998, the Boryeong Mud Festival is an attraction that pulls more than a million visitors to the South Korean city. As you all know, the town is said to be rich in minerals, so there is no shortage of mud. Mud is trucked onto Daecheon Beach for tourists and locals to enjoy the festival to their best.
The Monkey Buffet Festival is held in Thailand to develop tourism. It’s an annual feast held for about 600 monkeys. The Monkey Buffet Festival is held in honor of the Hindu gods Ram and Hanuman and involves 3,000 kilograms of vegetables and fruits being laid out for monkeys to stuff themselves.

Passage 6
People in the United States honor their parents with two special days: Mother's Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Father's Day, on the third Sunday in June. These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care to their children. These two days offer an opportunity to think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home. More fathers must help with childcare.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother's Day people wear carnations. A red one symbolizes a living mother. A white one shows that mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honour their parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery (墓地). On these days families get together at home, as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues for Father's Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.
Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is important, but it is “the thought that counts”. Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakeries, telephone companies, and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.
1.On Mother’s Day and Father's Day,______.
A.people usually have family parties B.everyone goes to visit the cemetery
C.children always go to their parents’ home D.hand-made cards are the most valuable gifts
2.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are both in May.
B.Fewer women worked outside the home in the past.
C.Not all the children respect their parents.
D.Fathers are not as important as mothers.
3.Which is not a reason for children to show love and respect for their parents?
A.Their parents bring them up.
B.Their parents give love and care to them.
C.Their parents educate them to be good persons.
D.Their parents passed away before they grew up.
4.What do you think the underlined word “florists” do ?
A.They sell flowers. B.They offer enough room for having family parties.
C.They sell special clothes for Mother’s day. D.They make bread or pastry (点心).

1.推理判断题。根据第二段“Before the Danu Festival, all the Yao families will clean up their houses, prepare sticky rice cakes and rice wine and slaughter (屠宰) pigs and lambs to entertain their relatives and friends with lavish food and dishes.(在达努节来临之前,所有的瑶族家庭都会打扫房屋、准备糯米糕和米酒,并宰杀猪和羊来款待亲朋好友,用丰盛的食物和菜肴来款待他们)”可知,瑶族人对待客人是热情的。故选D。
2.推理判断题。根据第三段“There is a widely spreading legend that tells about the origin of this festival. They married and gave birth to three daughters.(关于这个节日的起源,流传着一个广为人知的传说。在远古时代,有两座神奇的大山,一座叫布洛西,另一座叫密洛陀,两山相对而立。每年,它们都会稍稍靠近一些。就这样过了995年,两座山实际上已经离得很近了。这一年农历五月二十九日,一声震耳欲聋的霹雳突然劈向大地。就在同一时刻,两座山裂开了。一个名叫布洛西的男子从布洛西山里走了出来,而一个名叫密洛陀的女子则从与她同名的山里走出。他们结为夫妻,生下了三个女儿)”、第四段“When Miluotuo was aged, her eldest daughter, carrying ploughs and harrows, settled down in plains and lived on cultivation. Her offspring are the Han people. The second-eldest daughter left with a burden of books and her children fostered the Zhuang ethnic group. ★The youngest daughter, who became the ancestor of the Yao nationality, took millet and hoes (锄头) and planted different kinds of crops inside mountains.(密洛陀在年老时,她的长女带着犁和耙,在平原上定居下来,靠耕种为生。她的后代便是汉族人。次长女带着书籍离开,她的子女则帮助壮族繁衍后代。★最小的女儿带着小米和锄头,在山中种植各种庄稼,她成了瑶族的祖先)”可知,作者通过讲述一个传说故事介绍了达努节的起源。故选A。
3.词义猜测题。根据“ploughs and harrows(犁和耙)”以及“settled down in plains and lived on cultivation(在平原地区定居下来,并依靠耕种为生)”可知,密洛陀的大女儿携带犁和某种工具,来到平原地带从事农耕生产。
故选A。
【答案】1.C 2.B 3.A 4.A

D.Serious.
