Unit 2 Great people Welcome to the unit 教学设计
I. Teaching Objectives
Enable students to identify famous people and their corresponding professions (composer, explorer, inventor, president, scientist, writer) from pictures.
Help students match famous people with their correct background information, enhancing knowledge of great figures who have influenced the world.
Develop students’ speaking skills by discussing great people, their achievements, and why they are admired, preparing for further study of the unit and exam - related content about influential figures.
II. Language Knowledge
1. Key Vocabulary

Names of famous people: Christopher Columbus, William Shakespeare, Qian Xuesen, Thomas Edison, Nelson Mandela, Peter Tchaikovsky

III. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Lead - in & Warm - up (5 minutes)
Show pictures of some well - known great people (e.g., Confucius, Beethoven) and ask students: “Do you know who they are? What are they famous for?”
Introduce the topic: “Today we’ll start Unit 2 about great people. We’ll learn to identify famous people by their professions and know more about their achievements.”
Step 2: Identifying Professions (8 minutes)
Presenting Vocabulary:
Teach the professions: composer, explorer, inventor, president, scientist, writer. Write them on the board with simple definitions and examples:
Composer: a person who writes music (e.g., Beethoven)
Explorer: a person who travels to discover new places (e.g., Columbus)
Inventor: a person who creates new things (e.g., Edison)
President: the leader of a country (e.g., Mandela was a president)
Scientist: a person who does scientific research (e.g., Qian Xuesen)
Writer: a person who writes books, stories (e.g., Shakespeare)
Practice pronunciation and spelling with students.
Completing Part A:
Have students do Part A: write the correct profession under each picture. Walk around to help with vocabulary application. Check answers as a class, discussing why each person is associated with a certain profession. For example:
Picture 1: If it’s Thomas Edison, profession is inventor.
Picture 2: If it’s Christopher Columbus, profession is explorer.
Step 3: Matching Information (12 minutes)
Introducing Famous People:
Briefly introduce each famous person in Part B: Christopher Columbus, William Shakespeare, Qian Xuesen, Thomas Edison, Nelson Mandela, Peter Tchaikovsky. Mention their main achievements to help students make connections.
For example, Qian Xuesen is called the “father of China’s space programme”; Nelson Mandela fought for black people’s rights in South Africa.
Doing Part B:
Students match the names with the correct information in Part B. Encourage them to first recall what they know about each person, then make the matches.
Check answers as a class, explaining each match:

Encourage students to share their thoughts, using sentence patterns: “I admire... because... He/She has changed the world by...”. For example, “I admire Qian Xuesen because he is the pioneer of China’s space programme. He has changed the world by making great contributions to space technology.”
Extension Activity:
Have students think of other great people they know (not in the textbook) and briefly introduce them to the class, including their professions and achievements. This expands students’ knowledge of great figures.
Step 5: Summary & Homework (5 minutes)
Summary (2 minutes):
Recap the key points: professions of famous people, matching them with correct information, and discussing their achievements. Emphasize the importance of learning from great people.
Homework (3 minutes):
Ask students to write a short paragraph (50 - 80 words) about a great person they admire, including the person’s profession, achievements, and why they are admired.
Preview the next part of Unit 2, noting down any new words or questions.
IV. Assessment of Teaching Effectiveness
Formative Assessment:
Observe students’ participation in profession identification, information matching, and class discussion.
Check students’ answers in Part A and Part B for accuracy.
Summative Assessment (for later):
Evaluate students’ homework paragraphs for content (accurate information about great people) and language (correct use of vocabulary and sentence patterns).
