课时作业28 Unit 4 Exploring poetry
Ⅰ.阅读理解(每小题2.5分,共20分)
A
(2025·广东八校高三检测)Today, poetry and science are often considered to be completely separate career paths. However, that wasn’t always the case. The mathematician Ada Lovelace and the physicist James Clerk Maxwell were both accomplished poets.Similarly, the poet John Keats was also a licensed surgeon. The combination of these disciplines fell out of favor in the 1800s.Recently, however, there has been a reappearance of interest among scientists in expressing their research through poetry, such as lyrics and haiku, as alternative ways to inspire others with their findings.
“Poetry is a great tool for questioning the world,” says Sam Illingworth, a poet and a geoscientist who works at the University of Western Australia.Through workshops and a new science-poetry journal, called Consilience, Illingworth is helping scientists to translate their latest results into poems that can attract appreciation from those outside of their immediate scientific field.
Stephany Mazon, a scientist from the University of Helsinki, participated in one of Illingworth’s workshops where she and fellow scientists were tasked with writing haikus that highlighted water, a common theme in their research.“It was a lot of fun, and surprisingly easy to write the poem,” Mazon says. She plans to continue writing.“We do harm ourselves to think that scientists can’t be artistic and that art can’t be used to communicate scientific ideas,” Mazon says.
That viewpoint is echoed by Illingworth, who thinks science communication initiatives are too often dominated by public lectures with their hands-off PowerPoint slides.“Actually, when science communication involves writing and sharing poems, it invites a two-way dialogue between experts and non-experts,” he says.Scientist-poet Manjula Silva, an educator at Imperial College London, agrees, noting that poetry simplifies complex scientific concepts into language that everyone can understand.
Scientists and poets are both trying to understand the world and communicate that understanding with others. The distinction between scientists and poets is less than people might think. We’re all just people with hopefully really interesting things to say and to share.

I began writing when I was in high school.Life was relatively normal until the last year when my older brother died of a rare disease.I locked myself in the high-ceiled classrooms and spent hours trying to figure out the shades of green in trees, and how words might fill my life blanks.Writing was all I had.Poetry got me out of bed at dawn and cured my pain.
Then graduation came. After learning that to be a proper housewife was all the future I would hold, I boarded the city bus to the next state and announced I wanted to go to college. With no money but excellent academic performance and student editor experience, I got admitted.I published my first piece in the student literary magazine.I wrote and kept writing till I landed a job and got married. My poems got published often, and won small but significant awards until I discovered I couldn’t do two things at once and do both well.I would either write full time and starve or work full time and invest in family. With much regret, I resigned (辞职) as a small-press poetry editor, left my works on the shelves and only wrote occasionally in spare notebooks.I started every new year in expectation of a comeback because poems were in my blood.
My retiring years found me resolved to regain the only thing I had always wanted to do:writing poems.I dug out the notebooks, edited and re-edited.Dusty drafts changed with time into poems. It dawned on me that I never stopped writing poems, I was a poet and life itself was poetry.
So why do I write poems? Because I have to.It’s the first light of my day, my lifeline, and I won’t let it go.

Ⅱ.读后续写——友谊情深(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
At a neighbor’s pool the summer after sixth grade, Charley shouted out those famous last words, “Hey, watch this!” As he dove into the pool, Tad froze. It wasn’t the deep end!
Charley was hurt bad when he hit the bottom of the swimming pool. The doctor said he might have broken his back and could lose the use of his legs. His life would change forever. Tad didn’t see Charley for over a month after he was carried away in the screaming ambulance.
When Tad went to visit Charley in the hospital, his “Hey, dude, how’s it going?” was greeted by an annoyed grunt (嘟哝声). Looking small and pale, Charley cried, “I can’t walk—how do you think I feel? I wish I were dead!”
“Bro, you’ll get well! You’re tough.”
“No, the doctor said I wouldn’t.”
“Aw, man. That’s horrible!” And the conversation died right there.
Tad didn’t go back after that. He just didn’t know what to say. When Charley got out of the hospital, Tad went over to his house a few times and played video games, but it just wasn’t the same. Not only was his friend’s body damaged, so was his spirit. Tad had made friends with other boys who enjoyed all the things he and Charley used to do. Even if he felt sad and guilty, he wasn’t spending more time at Charley’s. Tad wanted to help and be a good friend but didn’t know how to now.
Charley just became sadder and sadder, and Tad spent less and less time with him as the school year passed.
When the summer break started again, Tad didn’t see much of Charley. He had made the baseball team and didn’t have time for video games. At least he told himself that was the reason. He was shocked right before eighth grade started when he saw Charley sailing down the sidewalk with a big black dog by his wheelchair. “Wow, what’s this?” said Tad, running over to his friend.
“This is Rowdy! He helps me.”

“Wow, what does he do?” Tad was interested. “Anything I tell him!” “Cool!” “Watch this! Pull!” With Rowdy pulling and Charley guiding him,Tad had to run to keep up with them.At the gym,Rowdy opened the door for Charley to wheel himself through. In class,Rowdy handed Charley his dropped pen and carried his books in his backpack. As Charley rolled to his next class,he drove Rowdy on and they went flying down the hallway.Tad looked at them and laughed happily, just like old times!
After that,Tad could sense something had changed.Charley was accustomed to his life in wheelchair. What’s better, he was grinning at school for the first time since the accident.Yeah, the previous Charley was back! Tad and Charley got to be best friends again.Tad didn’t feel he had to watch what he said or be on guard to help his friend all the time. It wasn’t long before the dog was just one more guy included in everything that went on! More importantly,so was Charley, the wheelchair and all.
