If you’re from other countries and mention Australia, people around you will probably think of the beach. We Australians have made adoration of the beach a national sport. To make the most of your next coastal camping journey, take note of these tips.
Know your H₂O
Water is everywhere, but not a drop to drink. Even though you’re surrounded by water, you’ll need to pack a proper supply of H₂O of your own. Seawater can’t be consumed. Your body will be losing water from the wind and the sun, let alone the dehydration (脱水) that will occur if you’re beating your mates at beach volleyball or involved in after-dark drinking activities of the non-H₂O variety.
The trick here is to observe your urine (小便). If it’s clear you’re doing OK. If it’s yellow you’re dehydrated. You need to reach for your bottle. If it’s orange or brown, stop what you’re doing and drink a bottle of water.
Be aware of private land
There are no privately owned beaches in Australia: beaches are public places for all to enjoy. But above the high tide line (涨潮线) is another matter. Someone owns the land, which means there are laws that state how we access the land and what we do when we get there. In many places, it’s not legal to camp directly there. Make sure you know what’s permitted and what isn’t at your chosen seaside destination, and always respect private land.
Stay fire safe
In Australia, summer’s favorite bedfellow is fire. State laws and local governments all have different rules you’ll need to consider, not to mention the various fire services. Always check for total fire bans, and always respect them to the letter. In general, fires are not permitted on beaches within national parks, so it’s best to look for signs and check with the local office. If it is legal, remember that a fire can smolder (闷燃) under sand for a long time and potentially injure the next visitors. Put it out with water, not sand. Indeed, this is good practice at any campsite, not just the beach.
1. What should you do when your urine is yellow?
A. Lie down and do nothing. B. Have a non-H₂O drink.
C. Do some exercise. D. Drink some water.
2. What should you keep in mind when you’re above the high tide line?
A. There are lots of private beaches. B. There’s no access to the beaches.
C. The land may not be open to the public. D. The campsites are not necessarily satisfactory.
3. What can be learned about fires on beaches in national parks?
A. They are allowed only in summer. B. They are permitted on rare occasions.
C. They are easily put out with sand. D. They are often left to smolder.
★B
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” — Albert Einstein
If you have a kid with special needs in the school system, you’re likely to have come across that saying hanging on a classroom wall. My five-year-old daughter Syona has cerebral palsy(脑瘫) and it means, combined with her communication and sight problems, that normal standard isn’t always an accurate measure of her abilities.
By now you have probably heard about Chris Ulmer, the 26-year old teacher in Jacksonville, Florida, who starts his special education class by calling up each student to give them much admiration and a high-five. I couldn’t help but be reminded of Syona’s teacher and how she supports each kid in a very similar way. Ulmer recently shared a video of his teaching experience. “I have seen their confidence increase rapidly.” he said. All I could think was: how lucky these students are to have such good teachers.
Syona’s teacher has an attitude that can best be summarized in one word: wonderful. Her teacher doesn’t focus on what can’t be done — she focuses on what can be done. Over the past several months, my husband Dilip and I have seen Syona’s confidence increase greatly. She uses words she wouldn’t have thought of using before. She recently told me about her classmates trip to Ecuador and was very proud when I understood her on the first try.
I actually wonder what the influence would be if we did something similar to what Ulmer does with his students in our home. We’ve recently started our day by reminding each other of the good qualities we all have. If we are reminded of our strengths on a regular basis, we will become increasingly confident about progress and success.
4. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph.2 refer to?
A. The cerebral palsy with Synona. B. The saying on the classroom wall.
C. The standard for kids with special needs. D. The accurate measure of Synona abilities.
5. What can we learn about Synona’s teacher?
A. She is Synona’s favorite teacher. B. She puts Einstein’s quote on the wall
C. She helps increase her students’ confidence. D. She uses videos to teach her students.
6. What change has taken place in the author’s family?
A. They’ve invited Ulmer’s students to their home. B. They give each other praise every day.
C. They visit Ulmer’s classroom regularly. D. They feel thankful to people in their lives.
7. What is the author’s attitude towards Chris Ulmar’s way of teaching?
A Opposed B. Supportive C. Indifferent D. Negative
★C
Rock climbing might seem extremely dangerous, but most climbers know what they’re doing. Over the years, climbers know what they’re doing. Over the years, climbers have developed knowledge and techniques that allow them to conquer rocks safely. There are different kinds of rock climbing and it’s mainly based on the equipment used. The two main categories are aid climbing and free climbing. Aid climbing uses equipment, such as screws inserted into rocks to help climbers pull themselves to the top. In free climbing, most climbers use equipment only to protect themselves from falling: they don’t use any tool to help them climb up the rock. In free climbing, it’s all about skill, strength and knowledge.
You might think that muscles are the most important factors in this extreme sport. Not so, says Jeremy Noris, a rock climber in US. “ Your can’t muscle your way through climbing no matter how hard you try”, he says. More important factors are balance, coordination, and the ability to make your body tense, which helps climbers pull themselves up. Norin also says that lower-body strength in actually more important than upper-body strength. One of the best climbers Norin knows can only do seven pull-ups, but he has no problems climbing up some of the most rugged rock faces around.
Although some climbers have mastered the sport, beginners are welcome. Start with bouldering, a kind of climbing without a rope that take place on a rock three to five meters tall, so that falling won’t result in serious injury. Believe me- it won’t seem that low when you are looking down from the top.
8. The main difference between aid climbing and free climbing lies in____.
A. the function of the equipment B. the way climbers keep balance
C. the rocks climbers choose to conquer D. the strength climbers use
9. Which of the following statements is true about the climbing?
A. Screws are required so climbers can pull themselves up.
B. Skill, strength and knowledge play a great role in it.
C. Climbers are not allowed to use any kind of tools.
D. The rules are not so strict as those of aid climbing.
10. What can we learn from the example of the climber Norin knows(in para.2)?
A. Conquering rocks has nothing to do with strength.
B. Muscles are the most important factors in rock climbing.
C. The more pull-ups a climber does, the tenser his body will be.
D. Upper- body strength is not as important as lower-body strength.
11. The writer suggests that the beginners should_____.
A. first take a basic lever course
B. overcome the fear of height
C. climber without a rope to a lower height
D. learn to protect themselves from injury
D
For generations, the standard way to learn how to ride a bicycle was with training wheels. But in recent years, many parents prefer to train their kids with balance bikes, two-wheelers that enable children to develop the competence needed for bicycling.
Given the benefits of balance bikes, why did it take so long for them to replace training wheels? There are plenty of other examples in which ignored solutions that involve subtraction(减法) turn out to be better alternatives. In some European cities, for example, urban planners have gotten rid of traffic lights and road signs to make streets safer.
Leidy Klotz, an engineer at the University of Virginia, noticed that reformative designs, in which elements are removed from an existing model, were uncommon. So he reached out to Adams, a social psychologist, to try to figure out why this was the case. The two researchers hypothesized(假设) that there might be an explanation: when faced with a problem, people tend to select solutions that involve adding new elements rather than taking existing components away.
Adams, Klotz and their colleagues set out to test if their hypothesis was correct. The researchers first carried out a set of studies. In one, they asked 91 participants to make a pattern symmetrical(对称的) by either adding or removing colored boxes. Only 18 people used subtraction. In another, the team scanned through ideas for improvement submitted to an incoming university president and found that only 11 percent of 651 project plans involved getting rid of an existing regulation, practice or program.
These findings suggest that “additive solutions have sort of a priority”, says Benjamin Converse, a co-author of the study. “Subtractive solutions are not necessarily harder to consider, but they take more effort to find.”
For now the team hopes that these findings will encourage people across various fields to think about subtractive options that might be typically ignored. “The hope is that, just by getting people to think about this more, maybe it will help inspire some other ignored subtractions,” Converse says.
12. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A. Balance bikes are not good for training kids.
B. People used to learn to ride bikes effortlessly.
C. Taking away traffic lights should make better traffic flow.
D. Some European cities ignore their governance.
13. How did Klotz and Adams support their findings?
A. By drawing patterns. B. By comparing their statistics.
C. By analysing motivations. D. By predicting trends.
14. What does Converse say about subtractive solutions?
A. They are superior to additive solutions. B. They are often harmful for creativity.
C. They are always overlooked by our brain. D. They are often preferred by conservatives.
15. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. A New Way of Management B. A Trend of Avoiding Regulations
C. A New Concept of Problem-solving D. A Study on Problem-solving Methods

Ten-year-old Sami loved to visit his grandfather’s house. The house was near the beautiful blue sea. At the seaside stood thick and tall palm trees with green coconuts hanging from them. When the coconuts fell down, Sami would break them open and drink the coconut water. Sami liked to play under the trees. It was always great fun to spend the holidays at Grandpa’s place.
This winter vacation, Sami was surprised when he came to his grandfather’s village. There were hardly any trees left. He saw houses built near the sea. People had cut down many palm trees and there was hardly any greenery left.
Grandpa’s house was different. He never allowed his trees to be cut. He hugged each palm tree in his courtyard. He also named the two big trees near the front door — one was Petu, and the other Betu. He had planted them with his own hands and today they had become large, massive trees with thick trunks. They were tall and green and gave the sweetest, juicest coconuts.
One night Sami was awakened by a strange sound. He could not sleep. He tossed (辗转) and turned in bed.
Suddenly, the ground shook as if the earth was splitting. He sat up straight and then ran to Grandpa. He clung (附着) to his grandpa tightly. Grandpa cried out, “It’s an earthquake It’s an earthquake” They ran outside the house. They thought that would be safe.
Suddenly, there was a loud sound; the earth was not splitting but the sea was roaring. People were shouting, screaming and crying, “The sea is rising. The sea is rising.” The villagers started running away from the beach.
Sami watched dumbstruck (呆若木鸡).
The waves were rising higher and higher. Sami thought, “How big the waves are” He went into the house again and saw water coming in from all sides. He was scared.
Sami remembered his mother telling him long ago, “You must always get out of the house if the floods come too near.” He ran outside the house with Grandpa. But the water came surging (汹涌) in.
Waves about twelve meters high came rushing in, drowning everything. Water was all around and everywhere.
Paragraph 1: Grandpa held Sami’s hand tightly but a huge wave separated them.

根据Know your H₂O部分中“If it’s yellow you’re dehydrated. You need to reach for your bottle. (如果尿液呈黄色,说明你脱水了。你需要拿起你的水瓶)”可知,尿液变黄时应喝水。故选D。
【2题详解】
细节理解题。根据Be aware of private land部分中“But above the high tide line (涨潮线) is another matter. Someone owns the land, which means there are laws that state how we access the land and what we do when we get there. In many places, it’s not legal to camp directly there. (但涨潮线以上的区域就另当别论了。那里的土地归私人所有,这意味着有相关法律规定了我们如何进入该区域,以及进入后可以从事哪些活动。在很多地方,直接在那里露营是不合法的)”可知,涨潮线以上的土地归私人所有,不对外开放。故选C。
【3题详解】
推理判断题。根据Stay fire safe部分中“In general, fires are not permitted on beaches within national parks, so it’s best to look for signs and check with the local office. If it is legal, remember that a fire can smolder (闷燃) under sand for a long time and potentially injure the next visitors. (一般来说,国家公园内的海滩不允许生火,因此最好留意标识并向当地管理部门咨询。若生火是合法的,需记住火在沙子下可能会闷燃很长时间,并有可能伤害到后续的游客)”可知,国家公园海滩生火只在极少数情况下被允许。故选B。

A. Opposed B. Supportive C. Indifferent D. Negative
A 5. C 6. B 7. B
根据划线词所在句子“My five-year-old daughter Syona has cerebral palsy (脑瘫) and it means, combined with her communication and sight problems, that normal standard isn't always an accurate measure of her abilities. (我五岁的女儿Syona患有脑瘫,这意味着,再加上她的沟通和视力问题,正常的标准并不总是准确衡量她的能力。)”可知,“it”指代前面提到的“Syona has cerebral palsy (脑瘫)”这件事,即Syona患脑瘫这件事意味着结合她的沟通和视力问题,正常标准并不总是能准确衡量她的能力。故选A项。
根据第三段中“Ulmer recently shared a video of his teaching experience. “I have seen their confidence increase rapidly.” he said. All I could think was: how lucky these students are to have such good teachers. (Ulmer最近分享了一段他教学经历的视频。他说:“我看到他们的信心迅速增强。”我所能想到的就是:这些学生有这么好的老师是多么幸运啊!)”以及第四段中“Syona’s teacher has an attitude that can best be summarized in one word: wonderful. Her teacher doesn’t focus on what can’t be done — she focuses on what can be done. Over the past several months, my husband Dilip and I have seen Syona’s confidence increase greatly. (Syona老师的态度可以用一个词来概括:美妙。她的老师关注的不是什么不能做,而是什么可以做。在过去的几个月里,我的丈夫迪利普和我看到Syona的信心大大增强。)”由此可知,Syona的老师像Ulmer 一样,帮助提高了学生的自信心。故选C项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段中“We’ve recently started our day by reminding each other of the good qualities we all have. (最近,我们以提醒对方我们都拥有的优秀品质开始了新的一天。)”可知,作者一家最近开始每天互相提醒彼此所拥有的优点,也就是每天互相赞美。故选B项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“All I could think was: how lucky these students are to have such good teachers. (我所能想到的就是:这些学生有这么好的老师是多么幸运啊!)”以及作者受Ulmer教学方式的启发,在自己家里也开始采取类似的鼓励方式。由此可以看出作者对Chris Ulmer的教学方式是支持的(Supportive)。故选B项。

A 9. B 10. D 11. C
根据第一段中的“Aid climbing uses equipment, such as screws inserted into rocks to help climbers pull themselves to the top. In free climbing, most climbers use equipment only to protect themselves from falling: they don’t use any tool to help them climb up the rock.( 辅助攀岩使用设备,如插入岩石的螺钉来帮助攀岩者将自己拉到顶部。在自由攀登中,大多数攀岩者仅使用设备来保护自己不坠落:他们不使用任何工具来帮助他们爬上岩石)”可知,辅助攀登使用设备,如插入岩石的螺钉,帮助攀登者将自己拉到顶部。在自由攀登中,大多数攀登者只使用设备来保护自己不掉落:他们不使用任何工具来帮助他们爬上岩石。因此,辅助攀登和自由攀登的主要区别在于设备的功能,故选A项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中的“In free climbing, it’s all about skill, strength and knowledge(在自由攀岩中,关键在于技能、力量和知识).”
根据第二段中的“Norin also says that lower-body strength in actually more important than upper-body strength. One of the best climbers Norin knows can only do seven pull-ups, but he has no problems climbing up some of the most rugged rock faces around.(诺林还表示,下半身的力量实际上比上半身的力量更重要。诺林认识的最出色的攀岩者之一只能做七个引体向上,但他在攀爬一些最崎岖的岩面时却毫无问题)”可知,Norin还说,下半身的力量实际上比上半身的力量更重要。Norin认识的一位最好的攀登者只能做七次引体向上,但他爬一些最崎岖的岩石面没有问题。因此,我们可以推断出上半身的力量不如下半身的力量重要,故选D项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“Start with bouldering, a kind of climbing without a rope that take place on a rock three to five meters tall, so that falling won’t result in serious injury.(从抱石开始,这是一种不需要绳子的攀岩活动,发生在三到五米高的岩石上,这样即使摔下来也不会造成严重伤害)”可知,作者建议初学者从抱石开始,这是一种在没有绳索的情况下进行的攀岩,发生在三到五米高的岩石上,这样跌落就不会导致严重伤害。
These findings suggest that “additive solutions have sort of a priority” says Benjamin Converse, a co-author of the study.
C 13. B 14. C 15. D

根据第一段第二句“But in recent years, many parents prefer to train their kids with balance bikes, two-wheelers that enable children to develop the competence needed for bicycling.(但近年来,许多父母更喜欢用平衡自行车来训练孩子,这是一种两轮自行车,可以让孩子培养骑自行车所需的能力。)”以及第二段最后两句“There are plenty of other examples in which ignored solutions that involve subtraction turn out to be better alternatives. In some European cities, for example, urban planners have gotten rid of traffic lights and road signs to make streets safer.(还有很多其他的例子,其中涉及减法的被忽略的解决方案被证明是更好的选择。 例如,在一些欧洲城市,城市规划者已经取消了交通信号灯和路标,以使街道更安全。)”可知,我们从前两段中能学到,前两段通过用平衡车取代自行车训练孩子的方式来证明“做减法”的解决方案是更好的选择,同样取消红绿灯应该可以改善交通流量。故选C项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段内容“In one, they asked 91 participants to make a pattern symmetrical by either adding or removing colored boxes. Only 18 people used subtraction. In another, the team scanned through ideas for improvement submitted to an incoming university president and found that only 11 percent of 651 project plans involved getting rid of an existing regulation, practice or program.(在其中一个实验中,他们要求91名参与者通过添加或删除彩色盒子来制作对称的图案。只有18个人使用减法。在另一项研究中,研究小组对提交给即将上任的大学校长的改进意见进行了扫描,发现651个项目计划中只有11%涉及废除现有的规章制度、惯例或项目。)”可知,Klotz and Adams通过两组实验的数据进行对比来支持他们的发现。故选B项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。 根据第五段内容“These findings suggest that “additive solutions have sort of a priority”, says Benjamin Converse, a co-author of the study. “Subtractive solutions are not necessarily harder to consider, but they take more effort to find.”( 该研究的合著者本杰明·康弗斯 (Benjamin Converse)说,这些发现表明“附加解决方案具有某种优先级”。“减法解决方案不一定更难考虑,但需要付出更多努力才能找到。”)”可知,Converse觉得做减法的方法并不一定很难想到,但是要付出更多的努力去寻找它们,可推知,Converse觉得做减法的方法总是被我们的大脑忽略。故选C项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段最后一句“The two researchers hypothesized that there might be an explanation: when faced with a problem, people tend to select solutions that involve adding new elements rather than taking existing components away.(这两位研究人员假设:当人们面对一个问题时,他们倾向于选择加入新元素的解决方案,而不是删除现有的元素。)”根据最后一段“For now the team hopes that these findings will encourage people across various fields to think about subtractive options that might be typically ignored. ”(目前,该团队希望这些发现能够鼓励不同领域的人们去思考那些通常被忽视的减法选项。)以及结合全文全文内容可知,文章介绍了研究人员对于人们在问题解决方法上的研究。D项是本文的最佳标题。故选D项。

空格后说“During this time, habits and interests that will continue for the rest of your life are formed and developed--so it's important to get off to a good start”(在这段时间里,习惯和兴趣会持续你的余生——所以有一个好的开始是很重要的),F项中的“a relatively brief period”和后文“During this time”前后呼应,因此F项符合语境,故选F。
空格前说“It's a time to begin the process of self-reliance and self-motivation”(这是开始自力更生和自我激励时候),空格后说“It builds your character and makes you independent”(它塑造了你的性格,让你变得独立),G选项But ultimately, you must rely on yourself(但最终,你必须依靠自己)中的“rely on yourself”与前面的“self-reliance”和后面的“independent”相一致,因此G选项切合题意,故选G。
空格前说“When times get tough, please be persevering. Train yourself to be strong. Tell yourself that you can summon(召唤)the will to overcome whatever obstacles come your way. Anything worth doing isn't easy”(当形势艰难时,请坚持下去。训练自己变得强壮。告诉自己,无论遇到什么困难,你都能鼓起勇气克服。任何值得做的事都不容易)可知,C项It's best to learn that lesson early(最好早点吸取教训)中的that lesson就指代前面描述的教训,因此C选项切合题意,故选C。
根据前文“most importantly,it will teach you that failure is inevitable(不可避免的)but isn't something you should ever allow to hold you back. ”(最重要的是,它会教会你失败是不可避免的,但你不应该让失败阻碍你)可知,失败在所难免,但是不要让失败阻碍你。所以你需要改变你的策略,再试一次,因此B选项Change your strategy and try again(改变策略,再试一次)符合语境,故选B。

This winter vacation Sami was surprised when he came to his grandfather’s village.
One night, Sami was awakened by a strange sound.

Paragraph 1: Grandpa held Sami’s hand tightly but a huge wave separated them. Grandpa fought the waves and strived to catch Sami, but failed. Sami was drifted away. He struggled to keep his head above the water. The water pushed him ahead. Fortunately, he caught a palm tree in his courtyard. He panicked and screamed out to Sami but could not see him. He clung to tree tightly while the sea was all around. In hope of seeing Sami, Grandpa climbed higher up the tree. The water carried Sami round and round.(79 words)
Paragraph 12: “Sami, Sami” Grandpa cried. “Don’t be scared, little one, come to me, quickly.” “But Grandpa, I can’t swim” Another wave came with terrifying speed and force. Sami cried in despair. Suddenly, Sami felt himself thrown onto the top of a tree. He immediately held it. Looking around, he saw everything was terribly destroyed; but in the near distance, his Grandpa was on another tree.
