Four Best Sci-fi Movies to Stream on Max
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Set roughly a decade after the first movie, this one sees Jake Sully living among the N’avi with children of his own when he discovers that humanity has returned to Pandora and decides to go into hiding. While there’s certainly plenty to admire in the plotting of The Way of Water, the most amazing thing about the movie is the visual splendor on display.
Dune (2021)
Dune is one of the all-time classic novels in science fiction literature, therefore this adaptation starring Timothee Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, and Zendaya Coleman was one of the most anticipated films of 2021. The story examines classic sci-fi topics like family, politics, and human purpose by using the struggle for intergalactic (星系间) resources as the background.
Her (2013)
In an era when Her is about to stop being science fiction, this movie about a tender romance between a lonely man and an AI companion feels more prescient (预知的) than ever. Thanks to brilliant performances from both Scarlett Johansson and Joaquin Phoenix, Her is a sensitive movie about the very real ways that AI can help us feel less lonely and how imperfect that solution is when what most people really desire is a connection to another human being.
Ex Machina (2015)
Another AI movie, Ex Machina is exciting, thanks chiefly to the sharp writing on display from its writer and director, Alex Garland. The movie tells the story of a computer programmer who is called to his CEO’s home to test out a new form of artificial intelligence he has been working on. The tests consist of just a series of conversations between them, but the movie’s brilliance comes from Alicia Vikander’s performance as Ava the AI.

By age 14, Dorothy Jean Tillman had obtained an associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degree. Despite the impressive achievements, Tillman remembers turning to her mother and saying, “I think I want to pursue a doctorate degree.”
Her mother Jimalita Tillman, was surprised. Dorothy was a year into launching a science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) camp startup, and she was looking for funding for the organization. She was busy. But after Dorothy explained that her mission was to positively impact young people when it came to their mental health, Jimalita understood and lent her support.
Jimalita said she was proud of her daughter. “I knew what it took for her to go through that. She had to sacrifice (牺牲) a lot. She emerged as a leader without fear, showing them how to tackle online schooling.”
From a young age, Dorothy has been outstanding in her academic pursuits. By age 7, she was already doing high school work. At that point, she started to take college level module (模拟) tests and apply the credits toward higher education.
“It was always mentally difficult to handle, especially at such a young age. When you get out of college, you’re thinking, ‘what do I do next?’ Now I am able to sit in the comfortability of being a teenager and being OK with the fact that I don’t have to figure out what comes next,” Dorothy said.
She studied integrated behavioural health at Arizona State University. For her dissertation (论文), she explored the stigma (耻辱) that prevents university students from getting mental health treatment.
In addition to her school work, Dorothy also devotes her time to running the Dorothy Jeanius STEAM Leadership Institute, which inspires hundreds of underserved young people in Chicago, as well as abroad in countries like Ghana and South Africa, to pursue STEAM careers. The programme includes guest speakers and open conversations around each of the five areas of STEAM.
4. What did Dorothy Jean Tillman achieve by the age of 14?
A. She raised fund for her organization. B. She started a STEAM camp startup.
C. She greatly influenced the young. D. She acquired academic success.
5. What was Jimalita Tillman’s attitude towards her daughter’s plan?
A. She was not surprised and took it for granted. B. She was in favour of her daughter’s decision
C. She thought the decision was unnecessary. D. She was worried about her daughter’s workload.
6. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. Running a startup is challenging. B. Young people favour online schooling.
C. The STEAM education is needed for all people. D. What Dorothy does is really encouraging.
7. Which of the following can best describe Dorothy?
A. Ambitious and determined. B. Brave and noble-minded.
C. Confident and sensitive. D. Careful and kind-hearted.

Pat the Bunny the 1940 classic touch-and-feel book, is still in print, which shows the value of touch in helping babies and young children get into the world of reading.
Later, when children reach school age, a common technique for teaching the alphabet (字母表) is using hands-on handling, such as forming letters out of clay. But as these students get older, the role of touch reduces, which is bad for the students. Today’s reading assignments are heavily digital, and use of computer keyboards for writing shows no sign of decreasing, especially given the appeal of AI tools for editing and composing.
I’m a linguist (语言学家) who investigates the differences between print and digital reading and how writing supports thinking. My colleague Anne Mangen and I asked more than 500 secondary students at an international school in Amsterdam about their experiences when reading print versus digital texts. Separately, I surveyed 100 university students and young adults in the US and Europe on their likes and dislikes about handwriting versus typing.
Together, their responses demonstrate that teenagers and young adults continue to value touch in their encounters with the written word. The research offers important lessons for educators and parents.
In the studies, students wrote enthusiastically about touch when asked for the one thing they liked most about reading in print or writing by hand. On a physical level, the feeling of holding a book or writing instrument in their hands mattered to students. These are some of their observations: “You actually feel like you are reading because the book is in your hands,” and “I like feeling the paper and pen under my hands, being able to physically form words.”
What students say about the importance of touch mirrors what researchers have found: Touch is an effective way to build early reading and writing skills, as well as to support how more developed readers and writers interact with the written word. Psychologists and reading specialists continue to report higher comprehension in children and young adults when reading in print versus digitally, for both academic and leisure reading.
8. Why did the author mention Pat the Bunny in the first paragraph?
A. To call on readers to read the book.
B. To introduce a classic children’s book.
C. To compare the book with digital reading.
D. To show the value of touch in early reading experiences.
9. What is a common technique for teaching the alphabet to school-age children?
A. Reading digital texts. B. Forming letters out of clay.
C. Using computer keyboards. D. Using touch-and-feel books.
10. What’s Paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. Shortcomings of the studies. B. The future of the studies.
C. The discoveries of the studies. D. Difficulties met in the studies.
11. Where can we read the text?
A. In a book review. B. In a guidebook.
C. In a science magazine. D. In a dictionary.
D
In a world where our digital devices have become extensions of ourselves, it’s no surprise that we often immerse (沉浸) ourselves in screens rather than engage with the world and people around us.
But amidst this digital deluge (涌现的事物), something vital is being lost: the art of genuine human connection. These devices offer a convenient escape from boredom or discomfort, allowing us to avoid awkward social situations or difficult emotions.
Small talk often receives criticism for being empty or insignificant. Rarely does someone express a fondness for it, let alone find fulfillment in it. However, small talk matters a lot in social interactions. Think of it as the warm-up before a workout — it helps us ease into deeper conversations and establishes a foundation of trust and understanding. It lays the groundwork for assessing whether the exchange has the potential to cultivate a friendship or deeper connection. Even one-off exchanges with someone at the grocery store or at the bus stop offer opportunities for connection.
But our aversion (厌恶) to small talk is significant. We may convince ourselves that we’re not good at it or that it’s unnecessary, but that’s simply an excuse. Yes, of course, social anxiety is real, but the only way to overcome the fears is through practice, gaining confidence by slowly taking risks, and actively engaging in conversations.
So, how can we embrace small talk and harness its power? Start by paying attention to your surroundings and engaging with those around you. Whether it’s commenting on the weather or striking up a conversation about a shared experience, small talk provides an opportunity to connect with others on a basic level.
Like any skill, small talk requires practice. Start small by initiating conversations with strangers or acquaintances and gradually work your way up to deeper connections. With each interaction, you’ll gain confidence and build the skills necessary for meaningful conversations. It may feel uncomfortable at first, but with practice, we can regain the richness of human interaction and cultivate relationships that truly nourish (滋养) the soul, build confidence, and reclaim the internal real estate that is overrun with anxious thoughts.
12 Why do people often prefer to engage with digital devices rather than the real world?
A. They are afraid of genuine relationships. B. They find it more convenient to do so.
C. They want to avoid face-to-face communication. D. They have little time to engage with others.
13. What does the author think of small talk?
A. It takes a lot of meaningful time. B. It is an unnecessary and hard skill.
C. It is difficult to master for most people. D. It plays a crucial role in social interactions.
14. What does the underlined word “harness” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A Employ. B. Challenge. C. Overlook. D. Discover.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. How to Overcome Social Anxiety B. The Challenges of Modern Social Life
C. The Power of Small Talk in Social Life D. Digital Devices and Human Connection

Lily was a bright and energetic girl with a heart full of dreams. She lived in a small and comfort town where everyone knew each other. One sunny morning, Lily’s teacher announced a school talent show. The news excited Lily immediately, as she had always loved singing and dreamed of performing on stage.
Without hesitation, Lily signed up for the show. She chose her favourite song and started practising right away. Every day after school, she would go to the park and sing her heart out, imagining the big stage and the cheering audience. However, as the days passed, Lily faced a big problem. She found it difficult to reach some of the high notes in the song. No matter how hard she tried, her voice just wouldn’t cooperate.
Lily started to feel discouraged. She thought about giving up and withdrawing from the talent show. But deep inside, she knew that giving up was not an option. She remembered the words her father always told her, “When life gives you challenges, face them with courage and never give up.”
Determined to overcome the obstacle, Lily decided to ask for help. She went to her music teacher, Mrs. Brown, and explained her problem. Mrs. Brown was very kind and patient. She listened to Lily sing and then gave her some useful tips on how to control her voice and reach the high notes. She also encouraged Lily to practise regularly and believe in herself.
With Mrs. Brown’s guidance, Lily practised even harder. She spent hours every day working on those difficult notes. Sometimes she felt tired and depressed, but she always reminded herself of her dream. Finally, the day of the talent show arrived. Lily was nervous but excited. As she stepped onto the stage and saw the audience looking at her expectantly, her heart raced. But as soon as the music started, she took a deep breath and began to sing.

By age 14, Dorothy Jean Tillman had obtained an associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degree. Despite the impressive achievements, Tillman remembers turning to her mother and saying, “I think I want to pursue a doctorate degree.”
Her mother, Jimalita Tillman, was surprised.

A. Shortcomings of the studies. B. The future of the studies.
C. The discoveries of the studies. D. Difficulties met in the studies.
11. Where can we read the text?

C. In a science magazine. D. In a dictionary.

12. Why do people often prefer to engage with digital devices rather than the real world?
A. Employ. B. Challenge. C. Overlook. D. Discover.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. How to Overcome Social Anxiety B. The Challenges of Modern Social Life
C. The Power of Small Talk in Social Life D. Digital Devices and Human Connection
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. C

词句猜测题。根据第五段中“Start by paying attention to your surroundings and engaging with those around you. Whether it’s commenting on the weather or striking up a conversation about a shared experience, small talk provides an opportunity to connect with others on a basic level.(首先要注意你周围的环境,并与周围的人交往。无论是评论天气还是聊一聊共同的经历,闲聊都提供了一个与他人建立基本联系的机会)”可知,下文在说如何通过关注周围环境并与周围的人互动来利用闲聊的力量。所以划线词意为“利用”。与A选项“Employ(雇用;利用)”同义。故选A项。
【15题详解】

【20题详解】
根据后文“To overcome this, find role models who share similar traits but succeed despite challenges.( 为了克服这一点,寻找具有相似特征但在挑战中成功的榜样。)”这句话暗示了存在某种需要克服的不利比较或自我怀疑,因此,这里应该指出人们常常不利地将自己与他人,尤其是媒体中的人物进行比较的问题。G项“We often compare ourselves unfavourably to others, especially those in the media.(我们经常拿自己和别人作不利的比叫,尤其是和媒体中的人比。)”为后续寻找榜样以克服这种心态的建议提供了背景。故选G项。

【答案】One possible version:
Lily poured her heart and soul into the song. Standing on the stage, her eyes closed, she swung gently with the music. Her voice resounded powerfully and obviously, hitting every note perfectly, especially those high notes that once troubled her. Veins slightly bulged on her neck as she reached for the climax part, and her hands took fast hold on the microphone. The audience sat out of their mind, their eyes fixed on her. When she finished, the whole auditorium erupted into thunderous applause. Lily’s face lit up, and she felt a sense of pride and achievement wash over her, a huge smile spreading across her cheeks.
After the show, Lily’s friends and teachers crowded around her. Her friends, eyes wide with admiration, said, “Lily, that was incredible! Every move was so accurate and full of emotion.” Teachers nodded in agreement, adding, “Your devotion really shone through. The countless hours of practice were evident.” Lily stood there, a shy smile on her face. Glancing around at their supportive faces, she truly understood that through her own hard work, never-giving-up spirit and the encouragement she’d received, she was capable of reaching any goal. This performance wasn’t just an event; it was a life-changing lesson she’d treasure forever.
