Unit 7 E Writing教学设计
I. Teaching Objectives
Learn to write an open letter about reducing carbon footprint, using “should” to give advice on climate action in areas like food, clothing, home, school, and transport.
Master the use of “should” to express advice when discussing ways to reduce carbon footprint.
Improve writing skills by following steps: studying a model, brainstorming advice, writing the letter body, self - checking, and peer review.
II. Language Knowledge
1. Key words & phrases
carbon footprint, climate action, food waste, second - hand clothes, heating, turn off lights, green transport, walk, take a bus, reduce
2. Key sentences
Everyone can help reduce our carbon footprint by taking small steps at home and school.
We should plan our meals every day to reduce food waste.
We should take good care of our clothes and buy second - hand clothes.
In addition, we can do a lot at home. For example, we should turn down the heating by one degree in winter.
We can even help in the classroom by turning off the lights when we leave.
We should also choose a green way to get around, like walking or taking a bus.
Let's take action now!
Here are some pieces of advice on what we should do to reduce our carbon footprint.
Let's work together to make a real difference!
3. Key and challenging points
Extract advice from a model open letter and organize it by aspect (food, clothing, home, school, transport).
Brainstorm additional advice for reducing carbon footprint in various aspects and use “should” to express it.
Write the body of an open letter with the brainstormed advice, ensuring proper use of “should” and clear organization.
III. Teaching Procedures
Learning activities:
Step 1 Study a Model (Step 1)
Analyze the model letter
T: Study a model. Complete the table with the advice from the letter. Look at the open letter and find advice for food, clothing, home, school, and transport.
Ask Ss to fill the table:
Clothing: take good care of clothes and buy second - hand clothes.
Home: turn down heating by one degree in winter.
School: turn off lights when leaving the classroom.
Transport: choose green ways like walking or taking a bus.
Discuss how “should” is used to give advice in the letter.
Step 2 Brainstorm Advice (Step 2)
Brainstorm more ways
T: Think. Brainstorm more ways to reduce our carbon footprint in our life and write your advice in the table. You can also add one more aspect.
In groups, Ss brainstorm advice for each aspect:
Food: eat local and seasonal food; compost food scraps.
Clothing: repair clothes instead of buying new ones; donate unwanted clothes.
Home: use energy - saving light bulbs; unplug electronics when not in use.
School: use reusable water bottles and lunch boxes; print less.
Transport: ride a bike; carpool with friends.
Each group shares their advice, and the class compiles a list.
Step 3 Write the Letter Body (Step 3)
Complete the letter body
T: Write. Complete the body of the open letter with your advice from Step 2. Use “should” in some of the sentences.
Guide Ss to start with “Here are some pieces of advice...”, then write advice for each aspect using “should” (e.g., “We should eat local and seasonal food to reduce carbon from transportation.” “At home, we should use energy - saving light bulbs.”).
Walk around to help with sentence structure and vocabulary.
Step 4 Self - Check (Step 4)
Check the writing
T: Read your own writing and answer the questions: Did you give useful advice to reduce carbon footprints? Did you use “should” in the letter?
Ask Ss to check their letters against these questions, correcting any mistakes.
Step 5 Peer Review (Step 5)
Exchange and review
T: Exchange your writing with another student. Answer the questions: What actions does the writer suggest we should take to reduce carbon footprints? Does the writer use “should” to give his or her advice?
Ss review each other's letters, give feedback, and suggest improvements.
IV. Assessment of Teaching Effectiveness
Assess Ss' ability to extract advice from the model letter by checking their completed tables in Step 1.
Observe the creativity and usefulness of the brainstormed advice in Step 2.
Evaluate Ss' writing skills by checking the letter body in Step 3, focusing on “should” usage and advice clarity.
Assess Ss' self - checking and peer review abilities by observing their answers to the check questions.
This lesson helps Ss learn to write an open letter about reducing carbon footprint, improving writing organization, advice - giving skills, and use of “should”.
V. Design Purpose
Studying the model helps Ss understand the structure of an open letter and how “should” is used for advice.
Brainstorming encourages creativity and critical thinking about carbon footprint reduction.
Writing, self - checking, and peer review provide a comprehensive writing process, helping Ss improve through practice and feedback.
VI. Blackboard Design
Unit E Writing “Reducing our carbon footprint”
Aspects & Advice (model + brainstormed):
Food: plan meals, eat local/seasonal, compost.
Clothing: care for clothes, buy second - hand, repair, donate.
Home: turn down heating, use energy - saving bulbs, unplug electronics.
School: turn off lights, use reusable items, print less.
Transport: walk, take bus, ride bike, carpool.
Key sentence pattern: We should + verb phrase (to give advice).
VII. Homework
Polish the open letter written in class based on self - check and peer review.
Share your open letter with family and friends, encouraging them to reduce their carbon footprint.
VIII. Teaching Reflection
The step - by - step writing process effectively helped Ss organize their ideas and write the open letter. Ss showed good understanding of using “should” for advice and brainstormed creative ideas. However, some Ss struggled with varying sentence structures when giving advice. In future lessons, more practice on sentence variety can be provided.
