It’s commonly said that flying is safer than riding a bus or train. While this is true, flying still has some risks. One risk is bird strikes—when a plane hits a bird while flying.
Bird strikes usually happen when a plane is taking off or landing. In 2022, there were 16,960 animal strikes in the United States and most of them were bird strikes.
Although most bird strikes do not damage (破坏) planes, some can be very serious. In 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 hit a group of birds after taking off. Both of its engines (引擎) stopped working, and the plane had to land on the Hudson River in New York City. Big birds can cause a lot of damage, but even small birds can break windows. Sadly, bird strikes almost always kill the birds.
To stop bird strikes, airports (机场) use many ways. For example, some use loud sounds to scare birds away, and others remove birds’ food source (来源) and homes by covering grassy areas. However, birds can get used to loud sounds, and covering green land is bad for the environment.
Now, airports are trying new ideas. At Salt Lake City Airport, people let pigs eat the eggs of nearby birds. At Southwest Florida Airport, people use dogs to drive birds away. Some airports even use high technology to find birds. With these new ideas, people hope to keep birds away and make flying safer in the future.
23. When do bird strikes usually happen?
A. When a plane is flying high. B. When a plane is flying over the sea.
C. When a plane is taking off or landing. D. When a plane is preparing to take off.
24. Why did the writer write Paragraph 3?
A. To explain how bird strikes happen.
B. To show the dangers of bird strikes.
C. To stress that small birds probably do not hit planes.
D. To argue that most bird strikes do not damage planes.
25. The underlined word “remove” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to “_________”.
A. turn down B. look for C. take away D. build up
26. How does Salt Lake City Airport stop bird strikes?
A. Using dogs to drive birds away. B. Letting pigs eat the eggs of birds.
C. Using high technology to find birds. D. Making loud sounds to scare birds away.
【答案】23. C 24. B 25. C 26. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了飞机飞行中鸟击的风险、危害以及机场为防止鸟击采取的措施。

【24题详解】

【25题详解】
词句猜测题。根据“some use loud sounds to scare birds away, and others remove birds’ food source (来源) and homes by covering grassy areas”可知,机场通过覆盖草地来移除鸟类的食物来源和栖息地,可推测出remove意为“移除”,与选项C意义最接近。故选C。
【26题详解】
细节理解题根据“At Salt Lake City Airport, people let pigs eat the eggs of nearby birds.”可知,盐湖城机场让猪吃掉鸟蛋来阻止鸟击。故选B。
D
Some buildings have special shapes and don’t show what they are used for. For example, there is an amazing building in Beijing that looks like a bird’s nest (巢), but it is a famous sports stadium (运动场)—the National Stadium. The Sydney Opera House in Australia looks like a ship, but it is a famous concert hall.
Interestingly, some buildings have shapes that have to do with objects inside them. The shapes of the buildings give clues (提示) to what people can see inside. These buildings can be offices, restaurants, or even museums. Here are some buildings built in this way.
In Guizhou, China, there is a museum called the Meitan Tea Museum. It is in the shape of a teapot (茶壶). From far away, the teapot looks like some kind of art. But as one gets closer, the windows and doors make it clear that it is a real building. Inside, you can learn all about tea, from how it grows to how it is made.
People who are interested in guitars might want to visit the guitar museum in Tennessee, USA. The building is shaped like a guitar lying on its side. Inside, visitors can see different kinds of guitars as well as learn about famous guitar players.
Also, there are animal-shaped buildings. For example, you can see dog and sheep buildings in Tirau, New Zealand. The sheep building is a wool and craft (羊毛和手工艺品) shop, and the dog building is the town’s information center.
27. How does the writer start the passage?
A. He tells a story. B. He compares facts.
C. He gives examples. D. He asks a question.
28. Where can people visit the teapot building?
A. In China. B. In the USA.
C. In Australia. D. In New Zealand.
29. What can people do in the sheep building?
A. Buy crafts. B. Feed sheep.
C. Learn about music. D. Get some information.

C. The use of museums D. The history of museums

25 The underlined word “remove” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to “_________”.
A. turn down B. look for C. take away D. build up
26. How does Salt Lake City Airport stop bird strikes?
A. Using dogs to drive birds away. B. Letting pigs eat the eggs of birds.
C. Using high technology to find birds. D. Making loud sounds to scare birds away.
30. What’s the best title for the passage?

C. The use of museums D. The history of museums
