Winning Doesn’t Equal Success
John Wooden was a celebrated basketball coach, who led his team to 10 championships over the course of 12 years. The team’s seven-year winning record still 21 (remain) unbroken. Wooden also received numerous coaching awards throughout his career.
Do all those wins equal success? Wooden would be the first to say 22 don’t. In a TED talk, titled “The difference between winning and success,” Wooden offered his take on 23 it means to succeed.
Wooden noted that Webster’s dictionary defines success as “the amassing of material possessions or the fulfilment of a position of power.” This didn’t work for him. Wooden said that success was peace of mind 24 (get) only through self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to do the best of which you’re capable. Simply, if you have tried your best, then you have succeeded regardless of the outcomes.
This attitude 25 (see) in Wooden’s coaching. He believed that his players were students first and athletes second. More than creating a winning team, he wanted to create individuals 26 would succeed off the court. He had three rules for his players: never be late, be neat and clean, and never criticize a teammate. If someone showed up late, Wooden would not let them 27 (play) even if they were the best on the team. He believed in building character, which would impact his players long 28 they stopped playing basketball.
Wooden also came up with a “pyramid of success.” 29 cornerstones at the base were industriousness and enthusiasm, and at the top, faith and patience. These were marks of success for Wooden, and winning 30 them meant that you hadn’t actually succeeded.

The below advice is really all about life lessons. We have to learn to value ourselves for our unique talents and be our biggest fans.
Grades do not define you.
Grades on a piece of paper do not define your intelligence or your future. Put your best 31 into your schoolwork, but also give yourself a break if you don’t do well enough to meet your 32 . There are so many other ways to be successful that do not involve grades — being a loyal friend, 33 yourself to theater or sports, or learning how to make life decisions with confidence.
Learn from your relationships.
Not all relationships will work out, but every single one will be a learning 34 . If you’re having trouble making friends, 35 club or sports team that interests you. And 36 in mind that other freshmen are just as nervous as you are about starting high school. But also remember that not everyone finds lifelong friends in high school. You will have many more chances in life to build 37 friendships, so don’t beat yourself up (自责) if you feel like you’re not forming deep connections.
Everything passes.
Bad days in high school can feel like the end of the world, but they’re not. These years will be mere memories one day. Enjoy the moments of joy — 38 achievements, 39 with close friends, meeting people who make you smile, finding a hobby you’re passionate about — but don’t dwell on (老想着) the moments of 40 . If you feel lost or hurt, confide in (向……倾诉) the people who love you.

Lakshmi spends hours every day digging up large yams (山药) that grow under the soil. Some yams weigh 5 kg and are almost as tall as she is. Lakshmi says this work is very hard.
Lakshmi lives in Kerala, a state in southern India. She is part of an all-women group called Noorang. The women in Noorang belong to one of Kerala’s oldest tribes (部落). They are trying to save yams. These yams have grown on their land for many years.
But yams are no longer a main diet among tribal communities in Kerala due to their rapidly changing lifestyle. Young people have many other foods to eat, like rice and wheat. They do not think yams are special anymore.
Bad weather also hurts yam harvests. In the past, floods and landslides caused many yams to die. Recently, there was a sharp decline in lands dedicated to yam production in Kerala, with many of these being changed to the more rubber cultivation instead.
“The women grow yams to feed their families and to keep these rare yams from disappearing,” says Lakshmi. “We believe yams can cure some illnesses,” says Shantha, another member of Noorang. “Many mothers here think yams are good for the stomach.”
Since 2022, the Noorang group has brought back 180 kinds of wild yams. They have fifteen kinds of wild yams, three kinds of elephant yams, eight kinds of Colocasias, seven kinds of sweet potatoes, and one kind of Chinese potato. “Our goal is to save rare yams and grow more,” says Sarasu, a member of Noorang.
56.What is the Noorang’s main task?
A.Getting more people to eat yams. B.Selling yams for more profits.
C.Protecting ancient types of yams. D.Growing yams instead of rubber.
57.Why are yams no longer a main diet for locals?
A.People didn’t realize their nutrition.
B.Local people’s lifestyle has changed.
C.Yams have gone from the region.
D.Yams are now a fancy food.
58.What caused yam production to drop greatly recently?
A.Flooding and deadly landslides. B.A ban on yam cultivation.
C.The introduction of new yams. D.The shift to rubber cultivation.
59.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.The project’s great achievement. B.The market prediction of yams.

As April 18 marks the International Day for Monuments and Sites, also known as World Heritage Day, we’ve selected four archaeological (考古的) sites in China that deserve exploration.
Zhoukoudian, Beijing
Zhoukoudian, a UNESCO heritage site located 50 km from downtown Beijing, has been a significant site. At various parts of the site, scientists have unearthed the remains of early human “Peking Man” that date back more than 500,000 years, as well as of “Shandingdong Man”, who lived 30,000 years ago.

As one of the greatest archeological finds of the 20th century, the Sanxingdui Ruins are believed to be the remains of the Shu Kingdom, dating back at least 4,800 years and lasting over 2,000 years.
The ruins are located in Guanghan city in Southwest China’s Sichuan province, covering 12 square kilometers.
The Yinxu Ruins, Henan province
The Yinxu Ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Anyang city, Henan province, was an ancient capital of the Shang Dynasty (16th century BC-11th century BC).
Spreading across over 30 square kilometers, the site features the greatest number of oracle bone inscriptions (甲骨文) discovered so far in the world.
The Daming Palace, Shaanxi province
Famous for its super-large scale and magnificent buildings, Daming Palace was the main royal palace in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) where Tang emperors lived and dealt with state affairs.

Everybody hates rats. But in the earthquake capitals of the world — Japan, Los Angeles, Turkey — rats will soon be man’s new best friends.
What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue dogs. Why? Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can’t get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat.
How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat’s brain gives a signal (信号). This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the rat’s brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has smelled that person.
Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Christian Linster at Cornell University, New York, says, “Robots’ noses don’t work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that.” Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don’t need electricity!
The “rat project” is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Corps in Scotland says, “It would be fantastic. A rat could get into spaces we couldn’t get to, and a rat would get out if it wasn’t safe.” Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake, of course).
63.In the world’s earthquake capitals, rats will become man’s best friends because they can ________ .
A.take the place of man’s rescue jobs
B.find the position of people alive who are trapped in buildings
C.serve as food for people alive who are trapped in buildings
D.get into small spaces
64.From the third paragraph we know the rescuers can judge a person who is alive by ________ .
A.the noise made by the rat
B.the rat’s unusual behaviour
C.the signal sent by the radio on the rat’s back
D.the smell given off by the person
65.In doing rescue jobs, ________ .
A.rats smell better than dogs
B.dogs don’t need to be trained to smell people
C.robots’ sense of smell can be affected by other smells around
D.rats can see in the dark and are smaller than robots
66.Rats have all the following advantages EXCEPT that ______ .
A.they are more fantastic than other animals
B.they are less expensive to train than dogs
C.they don’t need electricity
D.they are small and can get into small places

Good News for Gamers
Video games can sometimes have a bad reputation because they keep people indoors and looking at a screen instead of talking and playing with others face to face. 67
Scientists from the University of Vermont used data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) scheme, which is a study of brain development and health of children in the US as they move into adulthood. The results were taken from 2,217 children aged nine or 10. They were divided into two groups: young people who never play video games and those who play them for three or more hours a day.
The young people were set two tasks. The first one measured their reaction times by seeing how quickly they could press buttons that matched images on a screen. The second test involved using their memory. 68 During the tests, their brains were scanned with fMRI, which uses magnets to measure brain activity.
The people who played video games were consistently better at the two tasks, and the fMRI scans showed that they also had more activity in the parts of their brains that look after memory and attention. 69 However, it’s important to note that researchers don’t yet know if gaming improved their memory and reactions, or if they already had good memories and reactions and therefore enjoyed gaming and played a lot.
70 The team could also perhaps find out in future if particular types of video games affect people’s brain activity differently. The lead scientist on the study, Bader Chaarani says that too much screen time is not good for people’s mental well being or physical health. It is still very important to spend time outdoors in the fresh air, taking exercise and having fun with friends and family.
A.This means that people who play video games show more brain activity.
B.Compared with scrolling through videos on YouTube, playing video games surely makes brain more active.
C.However, a new study has revealed that video games might be good for brain development in young people.
D.Not all of gaming’s effects on the brain are positive despite the activated brain.
E.The scientists are hoping to carry on studying the same young people as they get older to track the effects of gaming.
F.They were shown pictures of people’s faces and then, a bit later, were shown more and had to say if any of the faces were the same.

【原文】
Victor Green, an American architect, revolutionized shopping in the 1950s by creating the type of shopping center that we now call a shopping mall. Green’s aim was to provide a pleasant, quiet and spacious shopping environment with large car parks, which usually meant building in suburbs. He also wanted people to be able to shop in all kinds of weather. He insisted on using building designs that he knew people would feel comfortable with, but please them in landscaped streets that were entirely enclosed and often covered with a curved glass roof. This was done to imitate some of the older shopping areas of city centers. But while these housed only small specialty shops, Green’s shopping malls were on a much grander scale. Access to the whole shopping mass was gained by using the main doors, which separated the shopping streets from the parking areas outside. As there was no need to keep out bad weather, shops no longer needed windows and doors and people could wander freely from shop to shop. In many cities shopping malls now contain much more than just shops. Cinemas, restaurants and other forms of entertainment are also growing in popularity.

12. Which of the following is true according to Victor Green’s idea of shopping malls?

【答案】14.D 15.A 16.A
【原文】
Many people would agree that the London Underground map is extremely well-designed. It is not only simple and easy to understand but also quite attractive. And most importantly, it performs its primary task of guiding both Londoners and tourists round the underground system in the city very well. The man behind this great achievement was called Henry Beck. He was an employee of the London underground drawing office, and first came up with his design for the map in 1931. The map which had been in use before 1931 was messy and unclear. Beck decided that a traditional map which gave accurate information about distance was not necessary for the underground, and instead produced a diagram which showed only the stations on the underground system. This new map was an enormous success with the public. When in 1933, it made its first appearance on the underground platforms and at the station entrances. The design of the map showed great originality because it provided a very clear representation of a highly complex network of communication. Beck’s approach was later adopted by most of the world underground system.

C.It has made their life difficult. D.It is what they apologize for.
【答案】17.C 18.D 19.B 20.A
【原文】W: Two members of the animal defense group, the ADG, are suspected of being involved in an attack on a medical research laboratory last night. Today I am joined in the studio by Nick Davidson, who is also a member of the ADG, and their spokesperson. Good morning!
M: Good morning!
W: How can you possibly justify the actions of your colleagues, who broke into the lab last night and caused such criminal damage?
M: Well, you say it’s criminal damage, but using animals in experiments is a crime.
W: You mean destroying the equipment used to help find cures for diseases isn’t a crime?
M: Yes, it is a crime in the eyes of law, but the reason we do that is to make it really expensive for the firms to use animals in experiments. They might think it is too expensive to set up the experiment all over again.
W: I see, so you completely support this kind of direct action.
M: Absolutely. Direct action is one of the many things you can do to highlight the cause of animal suffering. However, there are also completely peaceful ways of protesting. For example, I am a vegetarian, and I don’t buy anything that has been tested on animals.
W: And have you yourself been involved in any type of illegal action?
M: Yes. I poured red paint over fur coats in a cloth shop and I have been involved in an attack on a laboratory.
W: What happened at the laboratory?
M: We broke in and looked for evidence of the animal cruelty involved. The evidence we found actually put a stop to the research in that particular laboratory, because it wasn’t being conducted in an acceptable way. There are rules to be obeyed, even for animal testing. And we found that scientists were not following these rules.
W: But this sort of violence just gives the animal rights movement a bad name, doesn’t it?
M: We don’t agree with violence. Yes, we make life as difficult as possible for the scientists, but we don’t aim to hurt them. Where people have been accidentally injured, we have apologized as harming people is not our intention.
W: I’ll have to stop you there, Mr. Davidson. Thank you for coming in.
17. What is the ADG intended to do?
18. According to the man, why did the ADG members destroy the lab equipment?
19. Why did the scientists stop the research after the man and his colleague broke into their lab?
20. What does the man say about the bad name the ADG action has given to the animal rights movement?

They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can’t get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat.(狗能拯救生命。
根据第三段中的“When this happens, the rat’s brain gives a signal (信号). This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the rat’s brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive.(这种情况发生时,老鼠的大脑就会发出信号。信号发送到它背上的一个小无线电上,然后救援人员跟踪无线电信号。当老鼠的大脑活动跳跃时,救援人员知道有人还活着)”可知,救援人员是通过老鼠背上的无线电信号判断是否有人存活。故选C。
65.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Robots’ noses don’t work well when there are other smells around.Rats are good at that. (当周围有其他气味时,机器人的鼻子就不太灵光了。而老鼠在这方面很擅长)”可知,在救援工作中,机器人的嗅觉会受到周围其他气味的影响。故选C。
66.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“But dogs are big and they can’t get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat.(但是狗很大,它们进不了小空间。因此,现在一个新的研究项目正在使用一种较小的动物来拯救生命:老鼠)”可知,老鼠可以到更小的地方,故选项D是老鼠的优势;根据第四段中的“They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don’t need electricity (它们比狗更便宜,训练起来也更快,而且不像机器人,它们不需要电力。)”可知,选项B和C都是老鼠的优势。根据第一段中“Everybody hates rats.(每个人都讨厌老鼠)”可知选项A错误。故选A。

【答案】67.C 68.F 69.A 70.E

Greens aim was to provide a pleasant, quiet and spacious shopping environment with large car parks, which usually meant building in the suburbs. He also wanted people to be able to shop in all kinds of weather. He insisted on using building designs that he knew people would feel comfortable with, but place them in landscaped streets that were entirely enclosed and often covered with a curved glass roof. This was done to imitate some of the older shopping areas of city centers, but while these houses only small specialty shops, Greens shopping mall were on a much grander scale. Access to the whole shopping mass was gained by using the main doors, which separated the shopping streets from the parking areas outside. As there was no need to keep out bad weather, shops no longer needed windows indoors, and people could wander freely from shop to shop. In many cities, shopping mls now contain much more than just shops, cinemas, restaurants and other forms of entertainment are also growing in popularity. The map, which had been in use before one thousand nine thirty one, was messy and unclear. This new map was an enormous success with the public when in one thousand nine and thirty three, IT made its person appearance on underground platforms and that station entrances. Beck decided that a traditional map which give access information about distance was not necessary for the underground and instead produced a diagram which showed only the stations on the underground system. This new map was an enormous success with the public when in one thousand nine hundred and thirty three, IT made its person appearance on underground platforms and at station entrances. The design of the map showed great originality because IT provided a very clear representation of a highly complex network of communication. Beak's approach was later adopted by most of the world's underground system. Questions fourteen, what is the passage mainly about. Fifteen, which element of the old map didn't appear on Henry bx map? Sixteen, what does the speaker think of the design of the map? Listen to the next question. Two members of the animal defense group, the A, D, G, our suspects have been involved in an attack on a medical research laboratory last night. Today i'm joined in the dio by mike Davidson, who is also a member of the AD. G. In the spokesperson. Good morning. Good morning. How can you possibly justify the actions of your colleagues who broke into the lab last night and caused such criminal damage? Well, you see, it's criminal damage, but using animals and experiments is a crime. You mean destroying the equipment used to help find cures for diseases isn't a crime? Yes, IT is a crime in the eyes of the law. But the reason we do that is to make IT really expensive for the firms to use animals and experiments. They might think it's too expensive to set up the experiment all over again. I see. So you completely support this kind of direct action. absolutely. Direct action is one of the many things you can do to highlight the cause of animal suffering. However, there are also completely peaceful ways of protesting. For example, i'm a vegetarian and I don't buy anything that has been tested on animals. And have you yourself been involved in any type of illegal action? Yes, I poured red paint over fur coats in a close shop, and i've been involved in an attack on a laboratory. What happened at the laboratory . we broken and look for evidence of the animal cruelty involved. The evidence we found actually put a stop to the research in that particular laboratory because IT wasn't being conducted in an acceptable way. There are rules to be obeyed, even for animal testing. And we found that the scientists were not following these rules. But this sort of violence just gives the animal rights movement a bad name. Doesn't IT. We don't agree with violence. Yes, we make life as difficult as possible for the scientists, but we don't aim to hurt them where people have been accidentally injured. We have apologized as harming people is not our intention. I'll have to stop you there, mister Davidson. Thank you for coming in.

Sanxingdui Ruins site, Sichuan province
As one of the greatest archeological finds of the 20th century, the Sanxingdui Ruins are believed to be the remains of the Shu Kingdom, dating back at least 4,800 years and lasting over 2,000 years.
The ruins are located in Guanghan city in Southwest China’s Sichuan province, covering 12 square kilometers.
The Yinxu Ruins, Henan province
