The History of Roses According to fossil records, roses are over 35 million years old and they were first cultivated in China about 5,000 years ago. A Chinese emperor in the 6th century BC apparently had over 600 books 21 roses in his library, and oil was drawn from those 22 (plant) in his garden. However, only the highest members of society were allowed 23 (use) it. If anyone else 24 (find) with even a small amount, they were sentenced to death. Roses were also popular with the Romans, who used them as medicine and a source of perfume. Cultivated roses were only introduced to 25 is now Western Europe in the 18th century. Napoleon’s wife, Josephine, started a botanical garden near Paris, 26 she collected all the known varieties of roses and encouraged the breeding of new ones. This led to the flowers 27 (gain) increasing popularity. In Britain at that time roses were so valuable that 28 were often used as currency in local markets. All roses in Europe used to be pink or white 29 the first red ones arrived from China 200 years ago. These now symbolize love and are the world’s   30 (common) cut flower. Section B Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need. A.argue   B.inspired   C. repeated   D.grab   E. capable   F. feature G. immediately   H. ignored   I. effect   J. brain-washing   K. gradually Recently, a song called “APT” has sparked a global craze. So, what exactly is “APT” talking about? What exactly does the continuously 31 “APT” in the song mean? It turns out that “APT” is short for the Korean word “”, meaning for “apartment”. The song was 32 by a classic Korean drinking table game. The lyrics directly express the girl’s mind, with the development of the party, the relationship between the two sides 33 heating up. However, behind the song’s popularity is not just about the 34 melody (旋律). In recent years, the development of short video platforms has provided a new ground for the popularity of such songs. Data show that the average daily use time of the short video platform is 151 minutes per day, and the user stickiness is extremely high. These platforms 35 “short, flat, fast” operation pattern, and songs with strong rhythm and short lyrics are easier to capture users’ attention. The success of “APT” also lies in its strong “ear-worm 36 ”, which allows simple melodies to reverberate (回响;回荡) through the listeners’ brains and still “reside” (居住;停留) in the mind even when the music stops playing. Major music companies 37 of launching songs that meet the needs of short video platforms want to 38 the benefits traffic has brought in this field. However, this phenomenon has also raised some doubts. Some people 39 that this “chanting” (反复唱的) song is too simplistic and lacks depth. Still, the huge market potential of such songs cannot be 40 . From a cost and benefit perspective, they have a higher “value for money”. The success of APT provides us with a phenomenon worth thinking about. To follow hot style or adhere to their own music concept and unique style is the creators’ free choice. But to find their own position between the market demand and personal expression, is perhaps the most worthy path to pursue. III. They say that their parents don’t 41 them. They often think that their parents are out of touch with modern ways; that they are too 42 and too strict with their children; and they seldom give their children a 43 hand. It is true that parents often find it difficult to win their children’s trust and they tend to forget how they themselves felt when 44 . For example, young people like to act on the spot without much thinking. It is one of their ways to 45 that they have grown up and they can face any difficult situation. Older people worry more easily. Most of them plan things ahead, at least in the back of their minds, and do not like their plans to be upset by something 46 . When you want your parents to let you do something, you will be more 47 if you ask for their permission before you really start doing it. Young people often make their parents angry at their 48 in clothes, in entertainment and music. But they do not mean to 49 ; it is just that they feel cut off from the older people’s world, into which they have not yet been 50 . That’s why young people want to make a new culture of their own. And if their parents do not like music or entertainment or clothes or their way of speech, this will make the young people extremely happy. Sometimes you are so 51 yourself that you do not want your parents to say “yes” to what you do. All you want is to be left alone and do what you like. It is 52 enough, after being a child for so many years, when you were 53 under your parents’ control. If you plan to control your 54 , you’d better win your parents over and try to get them to understand you. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. (A) My husband and I were once in Nepal (尼泊尔) to see sunrise over the Himalayas. One morning we awoke to total darkness at 5 o’clock. As we rushed through a town with cameras in hand, I noticed the calm, gentle way the Nepalese people greeted the morning. One man boiled a huge pot of milk tea, and other villagers gathered around his fire, cupping their hands around small glasses of the steaming sweet mixture. It was fascinating, but not to be left behind, we joined the stream of tourists moving quickly up to the lookout point. The top was crowded when we arrived, but after 10 minutes of cold waiting, the assembled group gave up. “The cloud cover is too heavy,” one said. Then one by one they rushed down the hill to the next item on their sightseeing list. I was disappointed as well, but suddenly I noticed a small Nepalese boy absently playing with a stick and shooting quick glances at the clouds. He must know something we don’t, I thought. I decided to wait with him. The boy and I didn’t have to wait long. Moments later, a tiny stream of golden light burned through one thick cloud, then another. Rose-colored fog warmed the backs of the clouds, and suddenly the morning sun stole a glance around the side of the mountain, miles above where I’d expected it to be. Nothing I’d seen before prepared me for the moment the clouds withdrew with bowed heads, and the magnificent Himalayas were revealed before, around, and above me. I sat in astonishment, not breathing, not daring to look away, certain that God had placed me here at the backdoor of Earth to show me what Heaven really looks like. I certainly got the message. Never again will I rush a sunrise. I now know Nature will supply her fruits to me only when I am truly ready to receive them. 56.What does “It” in Paragraph 2 most probably imply? A.The darkness of the town in the morning. B.The huge pot of milk tea boiling on the fire. C.The way the local people welcomed the day. D.The stream of tourists rushing to the lookout point. 57.The author decided to wait with the Nepalese boy because A.she felt kind of having faith in him B.the restless tourists disappointed her C.that boy was praying to the sun with a magic stick D.she had nothing more to see on her sightseeing list 58.Which of the following words best describe the author’s feeling when she saw the sunrise? A.Totally shocked. B.Absolutely amazed. C.Truly frightened. D.Extremely interested. 59.What can be concluded from the passage? A.Do in Rome as the Romans do. B.God helps those who help themselves. C.Time and tide wait for no man. D.Fortune rewards those having patience. (B) The Sleep of Your Dreams According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a third of us don’t get nearly enough shut-eye. Our collective tiredness has promoted a $41 billion market for devices promising more — and higher-quality — sleep. In my everlasting search for downtime, I tested some of the most promising ones. Here’s how they stacked up. Eight sleep tracker$299 This mattress (床垫) topper fits under a sheet and “turns any bed into a smart bed,” according to Eight. While I slept, the sensor-decorated pad gathered data like heart rate, periods of deepest sleep, and number of turns. It was easy to use, and I liked the warming feature, which let me set each side of the bed to a different temperature. REM Score: 8 (out of 10) Dreampad pillow$149 and up The Dreampad uses smooth soundscapes to help you power down. Connect the device to your phone via Bluetooth or USB, and the pillow emits soft music, audible only to you as you lay your head down. There are ten tracks on offer. I didn’t drift off any faster with the Dreampad, but it did help me fall back asleep when I woke up at night. REM Score:6 Smart Nora Wireless Snoring Solution$299 My eight-hour restful happiness is frequently interrupted by my husband’s snoring. The Smart Nora relieves me of the need to push him. When the bedside audio sensor detects a breathing disturbance, it slowly blows up the offender’s pillow, gently shifting them into a freer-breathing position. My husband sometimes woke up briefly but was soon asleep again. REM Score: 8 Nightingale Smart Home Sleep System$149The Nightingale is hi-tech. Two app-enabled units wrap the room in a blanket of warm sound. You can also program the system to provide weather and traffic information when you wake up. The only downside: in standby mode, it emits a faint noise. REM Score: 9 * REM: rapid eye movement (describes a period of sleep during which you dream and your eyes make small movements) 60.By “how they stacked up” in paragraph 1, the author probably means “how they ______.” A.make sense to manufacturers B.get stuck in stores C.are compared with each other D.are piled up together 61.Which of the following devices favourably reacts to users? A.Dreampad pillow B.Eight sleep tracker C.Smart Nora Wireless Snoring Solution D.Nightingale Smart Home Sleep System 62.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? A.The Eight keeps the entire bed at the same temperature. B.The Nightingale, is an economical but perfect device. C.Soft music is applied to all these four devices. D.One in three people suffer from sleep problem. (C) Some people have said aging is more a slide into forgetfulness than a journey towards wisdom. However, a growing body of research suggests that late-in-life learning is possible. In reality, education does an aging brain good. Throughout life, people’s brains constantly renovate themselves. In the late 1960s, British brain scientist Geoffrey Raisman spied growth in damaged brain regions of rats through an electron microscope; their brains were forming new connections. This meant brains may change every time a person learns something new. Of course, that doesn’t mean the brain isn’t affected by the effects of time. Just as height usually declines over the years, so does brain volume: Humans lose about 4 percent every decade starting in their 40s. But that reduction doesn’t necessarily make people think slower; as long as we are alive and functioning, we can alter our brains with new information and experiences. In fact, scientists now suspect accumulating novel experiences, facts, and skills can keep people’s minds more flexible. New pathways can strengthen our ever-changing mental structure, even as the brain shrinks. Conventional fixes like word puzzles and brain-training apps can contribute to mental durability. Even something as simple as taking a different route to the grocery store or going somewhere new on vacation can keep the brain healthy. A desire for new life challenges can further boost power. Research about aging adults who take on new enterprises shows improved function and memory as well as a reduced risk of mental disease. Openness — a characteristic defined by curiosity and a desire for knowledge — may also help folks pass brain tests. Some folks are born with this take-in-the-world attitude, but those who aren’t as genetically gifted aren’t necessarily out of luck. While genes can encourage an interest in doing new things, a 2012 study in the journal Psychology and Aging found completing reasoning tasks like puzzles and number games can enhance that desire for novel experiences, which can, in turn, refresh the brain. That’s why brain scientist Richard Kennedy says “It’s not that old dogs can’t learn new tricks. It’s that maybe old dogs don’t realize why they should.” 63.What do some people think of aging adults? A.Their wisdom grows as time goes by in their long life. B.They can benefit from late-in-life learning and gain wisdom. C.Their memory gradually becomes inferior to that of the past. D.They are likely to have mental health issues due to forgetfulness. 64.What can we conclude from Geoffrey Raisman’s finding? A.Brain damage seriously hinders one’s learning. B.Brains can refresh and improve with learning. C.Brain power weakens slower than we imagine. D.Brains forge connections under new conditions. 65.What is one thing that helps maintain the health of our brain even as it shrinks? A.Doing daily routines by conventional means B.Avoiding worrying about our mental durability C.Imitating old dogs’ way of learning new tricks D.Approaching everyday tasks in novel ways 66.What is the finding of the 2012 study in the journal Psychology and Aging? A.Wishing to solve puzzles enhances one’s reasoning power B.Playing number games unexpectedly stimulates one’s memory C.Desiring new experiences can help to renovate the brain D.Learning new tricks should not be confined to old dogs only Section C Directions: Read the following passages. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. How Green Is the Building? In the world leaders meeting in Paris agreed to move towards zero net greenhouse-gas emissions in the second half of this century. That is a tall order, and the building industry makes it even taller. Cement-making alone produces 6% of the world’s carbon emission. 67 If you factor in all of the energy that goes into lighting, heating and cooling homes and offices, the world’s buildings start to look like a severe environmental problem. Governments in the rich world are now trying to promote greener behavior by obliging developers to build new projects to “zero carbon” standards. 68 All other types of buildings will follow in January of the next year. Governments in eight further countries are being advised to introduce a similar policy. 69 Wind turbines and solar panels on top of buildings look good but are much less productive than-wind and solar farms. And the standards only count the emissions from running a building, not those let out when it was made. Those are thought to account for between 30% and 60% of the total over a structure’s lifetime. Buildings can become greener. They can use more recycled steel and can be pre-made. The energy required to produce a wooden beam is one-sixth of that required for a steel one of comparable strength. When a mature tree is cut down, a new one can be planted to replace it, capturing more carbon. After buildings are torn down, old roofs are easy to recycle into-new structures. And for older buildings-to be more energy-efficient, wood is a good insulator (绝缘体). 70 Governments can help urge the industry to use more wood, particularly in the public sector — the construction industry’s biggest client. That would help wood-building specialists achieve greater scale and lower costs. A.For example, a softwood window frame provides 400 times as much insulation as a steel and 1,000 times as an aluminum. B.However, these standards are less green than they may seem. C.In January, all new buildings in the EU must be built to “nearly zero-energy” standards. D.Steel half of which goes into buildings, accounts for another 8%. E.This would favor wood as well as innovative ways of producing other materials. F.Zero-carbon building regulations should be altered to include the material emissions. IV. They created a tiny device that works with your smartphone. And it could be exactly what you’re looking for. It’s called TrackR. It is a tracking device, the size of 1/4. It’s changing the way we keep track of the important things in our lives. It’s easy. Install the free TrackR app on your smartphone, connect the app to your device and you are ready to go. Simply attach TrackR to whatever you want to keep labels on. The entire process of setting it up only takes 5 minutes or less. You can attach it to your keys, briefcase, wallet, your latest tech devices, and anything else you don’t want to lose. Then use the TrackR app to locate your missing items in seconds. Forget expensive GPS systems or tracking services. Nobody wants to pay expensive monthly fees. This is the reason why TrackR was created. If you forget where you parked your car, take out your smartphone and open the TrackR app, tap on the lost item icon on the screen. And the app will tell you the last known location of the car. Tony: Well, the problem is that this writing assignment isn’t coming up right. What I thought I was writing on was to talk about what a particular sports means to me, one I take part in。 Professor Jones: What sport did you choose? Tony: I decided to write about cross country skiing. Professor Jones: What are you going to say about skiing? Tony: That’s the problem. I thought I would write about how peaceful it is to be out in the country. Professor Jones: So why is that a problem? Tony: As I started describing how quiet it is to be out in the woods, I keep mentioning how much effort it takes to keep going. Cross country skiing isn’t as easy as some people think. It takes a lot of energy, but that’s not part of my paper. So I guess I should leave it out. But now I don’t know how to explain the feeling of peacefulness without explaining how hard you have to work for it. It all fits together. It’s not like just sitting down somewhere and watching the clouds rolling by. That’s different. Professor Jones: Then you’ll have to include that in your point. The peacefulness of cross country skiing is the kind you earn by effort. Why leave that out? Part of a point you knew beforehand, but part you discovered, as he wrote. That’s common, right? Tony: Yeah, I guess so. Questions 17. What is the topic of the man’s writing assignment? 18. What problem does the man have while working on this paper? 19. A.Totally shocked. B.Absolutely amazed. C.Truly frightened. D.Extremely interested. 59.What can be concluded from the passage? A.Do in Rome as the Romans do. B.God helps those who help themselves. C.Time and tide wait for no man. D.Fortune rewards those having patience. 【答案】56.C 57.A 58.B 59.D 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。主要讲述作者在尼泊尔观看喜马拉雅山日出的经历及从中得到的感悟。 56.词句猜测题。根据第二段中的“As we rushed through a town with cameras in hand, I noticed the calm, gentle way the Nepalese people greeted the morning. I now know Nature will supply her fruits to me only when I am truly ready to receive them.(我再也不会急于看到日出了。我现在知道,只有当我真正准备好接受大自然的馈赠时,她才会把果实赐予我。)”可知,作者从这次经历中领悟到耐心等待会有回报,即命运会奖励有耐心的人。故选D项。 (B) The Sleep of Your Dreams According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a third of us don’t get nearly enough shut-eye. 【答案】60.C 61.C 62.D 【导语】本文是一篇应用文。文章主要针对几款睡眠辅助设备的功能、使用体验及效果进行评价。 60.词句猜测题。根据文章第一段“Our collective tiredness has promoted a $41 billion market for devices promising more—and higher-quality—sleep. In my everlasting search for downtime, I tested some of the most promising ones. (我们集体的疲惫促进了价值410亿美元的市场,市场上充斥着各种承诺带来更高质量睡眠的设备。在我无休止地寻求休息时间的过程中,我测试了一些最具有前景的设备)”及下文的四个表格内容可知,作者测试了不同的设备,并对他们进行比对,故“how they stacked up”与C项“它们是如何相互比较的”意义相近。故选C。 61.推理判断题。根据文章Smart Nora Wireless Snoring Solution部分“The Smart Nora relieves me of the need to push him. When the bedside audio sensor detects a breathing disturbance, it slowly blows up the offender’s pillow, gently shifting them into a freer-breathing position.(Smart Nora让我免去了推他的需要。当床边的音频传感器检测到呼吸扰动时,它会慢慢给打鼾者的枕头充气,温柔地让他们调整到更自由呼吸的姿势)”可知,Smart Nora Wireless Snoring Solution可以让打鼾者调整到更自由呼吸的姿势,做出对用户有利的回应。故选C。 62.细节理解题。根据文章第一段“According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a third of us don’t get nearly enough shut-eye.(根据美国疾病控制与预防中心的数据,我们中有三分之一的人没有得到足够的睡眠)”可知,三分之一的人有睡眠问题。故选D。 (C) Some people have said aging is more a slide into forgetfulness than a journey towards wisdom. A.Wishing to solve puzzles enhances one’s reasoning power B.Playing number games unexpectedly stimulates one’s memory C.Desiring new experiences can help to renovate the brain D.Learning new tricks should not be confined to old dogs only 【答案】63.C 64.B 65.D 66.C 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要探讨了衰老与大脑的关系,指出尽管大脑会随年龄增长而萎缩,但通过学习新事物、积累新经验等方式可以保持大脑的灵活性和健康。 63.细节理解题。根据第一段“Some people have said aging is more a slide into forgetfulness than a journey towards wisdom.(一些人认为,衰老与其说是一段通往智慧的旅程,不如说是逐渐陷入健忘的过程。)”可知,有些人认为老年人的记忆力会逐渐衰退,而不是增长智慧。故选C。 64.推理判断题。根据第二段“Throughout life, people’s brains constantly renovate themselves. In the late 1960s, British brain scientist Geoffrey Raisman spied growth in damaged brain regions of rats through an electron microscope; their brains were forming new connections. This meant brains may change every time a person learns something new.(人这一辈子,大脑都在不断自我更新。20 世纪 60 年代末,英国脑科学家杰弗里・雷斯曼通过电子显微镜观察到,老鼠受损的大脑区域出现了生长现象,它们的大脑正在形成新的连接。这意味着,人每学到一些新东西,大脑就可能发生变化。)”可推知,大脑可以通过学习来更新和改善。故选B。 65.推理判断题。根据第四段“In fact, scientists now suspect accumulating novel experiences, facts, and skills can keep people’s minds more flexible. (事实上,科学家们现在推测,不断积累新奇的经历、事实和技能能够让人的思维更加灵活。)”和第五段“Even something as simple as taking a different route to the grocery store or going somewhere new on vacation can keep the brain healthy.(即使是像走不同的路线去杂货店或假期去新的地方这样简单的事情也能保持大脑健康。)”可知,以新颖的方式处理日常任务有助于保持大脑健康。故选D。 66.细节理解题。根据最后一段“While genes can encourage an interest in doing new things, a 2012 study in the journal Psychology and Aging found completing reasoning tasks like puzzles and number games can enhance that desire for novel experiences, which can, in turn, refresh the brain.(虽然基因会催生人们对新鲜事物的兴趣,但 2012 年发表在《心理学与衰老》期刊上的一项研究发现,完成拼图、数字游戏等推理任务能够增强这种对新奇体验的渴望,而这种渴望反过来又能让大脑重焕活力。)”可知,渴望新体验可以帮助更新大脑。故选C。 Section C Directions: Read the following passages. 【答案】67.D 68.C 69.B 70.A 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要讨论了建筑行业的碳排放问题以及如何通过采用更环保的建筑材料和建筑标准来减少碳排放。 67.根据上文“Cement-making alone produces 6% of the world’s carbon emission. (仅水泥生产就占全球碳排放的6%。)”可知,此处是在举例说明建筑行业碳排放占比高,D项“Steel half of which goes into buildings, accounts for another 8%. (钢铁行业占另外的8%,其中一半用于建筑行业。)”,进一步举例说明建筑行业碳排放占比高,与上文形成并列关系。故选D项。 68.根据上文“Governments in the rich world are now trying to promote greener behavior by obliging developers to build new projects to “zero carbon” standards. (富裕国家的政府如今正试图通过强制开发商按照“零碳”标准建设新项目,来推动更环保的行为。)”以及下文“All other types of buildings will follow in January of the next year.(所有其他类型的建筑将在明年1月跟进。)”可知,此处是在说明某个时间点对建筑的新要求,C项“In January, all new buildings in the EU must be built to “nearly zero-energy” standards. (1月份,欧盟所有新建筑必须按照“近零能耗”标准建造。)”,以具体案例(欧盟政策)衔接上文,又与下文时间相呼应。故选C项。 69.根据下文“Wind turbines and solar panels on top of buildings look good but are much less productive than wind and solar farms. And the standards only count the emissions from running a building, not those let out when it was made. (建筑物顶部的风力涡轮机和太阳能电池板看起来不错,但比风能和太阳能发电场的效率低得多。而且标准只计算建筑物运行时的排放,而不计算建造时的排放。)”可知,此处是在说明这些标准存在不足,B项“However, these standards are less green than they may seem. (然而,这些标准并不像看上去那么环保。)”,可作为段落主题句,通过转折词However引出现有标准的缺陷,与后文的具体分析形成呼应。故选B项。 70.根据上文“And for older buildings to be more energy-efficient, wood is a good insulator (绝缘体). (对于老建筑来说,为了提高能源效率,木材是一种很好的绝缘体。)”可知,此处是在说明木材作为绝缘体的优势,A项“For example, a softwood window frame provides 400 times as much insulation as a steel and 1,000 times as an aluminum. (例如,一个软木窗框的隔热性能是钢窗框的400倍,是铝窗框的1,000倍。)”中的“insulation”与上文“insulator”直接呼应,举例说明了木材的隔热性能。故选A项。 IV. IV.
