At just 18 years old, Khalifa Aminu from Kano, Nigeria, has proved himself as an amazing inventor, with his sensory glasses designed to help the visually impaired
The glasses are equipped with infrared sensors (红外线传感器) that can “see” obstacles in the user’s path, warning them about possible dangers without the need for traditional walking sticks or guide dogs. In their current form, the glasses let out a beeping sound when an object is nearby, helping users move past it safely. Aminu is now working on making the glasses even more effective, particularly in low-light and nighttime conditions.
Aminu’s journey into the world of invention began in childhood. He started small, building a rowboat as his first project, and quickly realized that his creations could be used to solve real-world problems in his community. This love for invention has led him to create various innovations such as a radio station, a bomb detector and an automatic water sprayer for farmers.
As for the inspiration for his latest creation, Aminu explained, “I grew up in an area where there are visually impaired people, and I understand what they’re going through. This is why I began the process for a technology-based solution for them.”
The glasses have received positive feedback from testing. In a recent experiment, a blind man was highly impressed by their effectiveness. “He suggested several improvements, like a wireless switch, smaller parts, and lenses for better usability,” Aminu explained. “These suggestions will be carried out in future versions, but the challenge remains the lack of materials and resources for further development.”
Luckily, in June, Aminu’s invention caught the attention of Nigeria’s National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, suggesting a bright future for him in further innovation and mass production.
“My ultimate dream is to build a global company that continues to develop innovative solutions not only for Nigeria but for the world,” said Aminu.
4. What is the function of the infrared sensors in the sensory glasses?
A. To help the users see the obstacles in the users’ path clearly.
B. To warn the users of the possible dangers on the way.
C. To replace the guide dogs completely.
D. To provide visual images of the surroundings for the user.
5. Which words can best describe Aminu?
A. Generous and devoted. B. Considerate and responsible.
C. Creative and warm-hearted. D. Talented and humorous.
6. Why does the author mention the blind man in paragraph 5?
A. To introduce a recent experiment. B. To call for further development.
C. To provide practical suggestions. D. To illustrate the effectiveness.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?
A. To explain the working principle of Aminu’s sensory glasses.
B. To honor an outstanding young man and his invention.
C. To share an inspiring story of an inventor and his newest invention.
D. To recommend a story of how Aminu invented the sensory glasses.

Crows (乌鸦) can use tools and perform basic statistics, and they continue to surprise us. Earlier this year, a team of researchers from the University of Bristol found that the hooded crow, which has a grey body and black tail and head feathers (羽毛), is able to memorize the shape and size of an object after it is taken away and construct one like it. This kind of action requires the ability to form a mental template, which is basically an image in the mind of what a particular object looks like, even when that object is not present. Mental templates allow animals to create tools, which can be used to get food or make a stronger nest, both eventually leading to a better chance of survival.
For their study, Sarah Jelbert and her coworkers first trained three hooded crows to recognize pieces of paper of different sizes and colors. To do this, they exposed the birds to “template” pieces of paper in different colors and sizes for several minutes before removing them and then rewarded the birds for dropping small pieces that matched these templates into a long narrow opening. The crows were next given the opportunity to make versions of these objects in exchange for a reward. The researchers found that all three crows made objects that matched the original template object they had been rewarded for in both color and size.
“Unlike humans, who regularly copy each other’s behavior, we don’t have much evidence that crows will watch each other and copy what another crow is doing,” Jelbert says. However, young crows often steal their parents’ tools. So it’s possible that these crows learn how to make different types of tools from experience, stealing their parents’ tools, using them to remember what these tools look like, and then trying to create something similar, Jelbert believes.
8. Which of the following best illustrates a mental template?
A. A monkey swinging from branch to branch. B. A cat getting back the food it hid.
C. A crow sleeping in its nest. D. A dog playing with a ball.
9. What did the crows do in the study?
A. They performed basic statistics. B. They were trained to do magic tricks.
C. They matched and reproduced objects. D. They observed and copied one another.
10. What can we infer from young crows’ stealing incidents?
A. These are social motivations. B. They may fall into an annoying habit.
C. They come into conflict with their parents. D. These are opportunities for acquiring skills.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Crows communicate in a unique language B. Hooded crows use more tools than other birds
C. Crows are even smarter than we thought D. Hooded crows identify sizes and colors with ease
D
A new study finds that house cats can tell the difference between the smell of their owner and the smell of a stranger.
The study was done by Tokyo University of Agriculture. In the study, 30 cats were shown three plastic tubes (管子). One tube had the smell of their owner, one had the smell of a stranger, and the last one had no smell. The smells were taken from under the arm, behind the ear, and between the toes (脚趾头) of the people.
The researchers found that cats spent more time smelling the tube with the stranger’s smell than the one with their owner’s smell or the one with no smell. This means that cats can know whether a person is familiar or not just by their smell. Cats are known to have a strong sense of smell. They use it to talk with other cats. But this study finds that they may also use smell to demarcate people.
Other studies in the past have found that cats can also know people by their voice. They can even change their behaviour when they sense that someone is happy or angry. However, the researchers are not sure if cats can know exactly who a person is by their smell. To answer that question, more studies are needed.
One researcher, Hidehiko Uchiyama, said they need to show cats the smells of many people they know, and look for special behaviours when the cats smell their owner’s smell. Another expert, Serenella d’Ingeo, said that we don’t know how the cats felt when smelling the different tubes-whether they were relaxed or nervous. The researchers also saw that after smelling the tubes, cats sometimes brushed their faces against them. This is a way cats mark things with their own smell, which might mean sniffing (嗅) is part of exploring.
In the end, the study finds that cats use their nose to know if a person is someone they know or not.
12. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the study?
A. Its results. B. Its effect. C. Its progress. D. Its procedures.
13. What does the underlined word “demarcate” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Give in to. B. Tell apart. C. Look forward to. D. Check out.
14. What is the researchers’ attitude to cats’ recognising specific people by smell?
A. Uncertain. B. Confident. C. Doubtful. D. Unconcerned.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Smell’s Role in Cat Socialising
B. Cats Like Strange Smells More
C. Cats Can Use Smell to Know Humans
D. Cats’ Unique Ability to Recognise Voices
Upon reflection of the ideal social moral code (准则) within one sentence, it would be: be constructive (建设性的), not destructive (毁坏性的). ____16____ Sometimes it is difficult to determine if an act is exactly constructive or destructive.
One problem is that a behaviour can be both constructive and destructive to different degrees. ____17____ You get a thought in your mind to spank (打屁股) him as a punishment. However, you start to feel confused. It might show him that not listening to you and breaking things is not welcome, but on the other hand, spanking him will hurt him physically and perhaps teach him to use force in situations later in life. ____18____ However, through your own reasoning, you can decide to what degree it would be beneficial or harmful to him and the situation at hand.
____19____ For example, for some people, construction can never involve violence, while for others, it could even be an unavoidable part. Take the example of killing Hitler. Killing someone is definitely termed a destructive act. However, in light of the circumstances, I would assume that the majority of people would agree that killing Hitler would be seen as a constructive act. Therefore, our definitions often determine our values.
Additionally, construction can be seen as good to some, and bad to others. What a majority might take as a constructive might be seen as destructive to a minority. Is there a way to determine which side is correct? It is almost impossible. ____20____ Many examples in history have proved this.
Though I consider “Be constructive, not destructive” the most solid one-sentence social moral code, it is not without its challenges. However, I cannot imagine a better code in a social context.
A. It is a handy and universal policy.
B. Though it sounds sensible, there are many troubles.
C. There is no exact wrong or right in these moments.
D. Other times it is difficult to disagree with the majority.
E. Being in the majority does not mean it is correct, or more proper.
F. Say your son broke a glass vase after being warned several times.
G. Another trouble to consider is the definition we give to construction and destruction.

B 9. C 10. D 11. C
根据第一段“This kind of action requires the ability to form a mental template, which is basically an image in the mind of what a particular object looks like, even when that object is not present. Mental templates allow animals to create tools, which can be used to get food or make a stronger nest, both eventually leading to a better chance of survival.
根据第二段“To do this, they exposed the birds to “template” pieces of paper in different colors and sizes for several minutes before removing them and then rewarded the birds for dropping small pieces that matched these templates into a long narrow opening. The crows were next given the opportunity to make versions of these objects in exchange for a reward. The researchers found that all three crows made objects that matched the original template object they had been rewarded for in both color and size.
根据最后一段“However, young crows often steal their parents’ tools. So it’s possible that these crows learn how to make different types of tools from experience, stealing their parents’ tools, using them to remember what these tools look like, and then trying to create something similar (然而,幼小的乌鸦经常会偷用它们父母的工具。所以有可能这些乌鸦是通过经验来学习如何制作不同类型的工具的,它们偷用父母的工具,利用这些工具来记住这些工具的样子,然后尝试制作类似的东西)”可知,偷工具可能是幼年乌鸦学习制作工具技能的机会,故选D。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Crows (乌鸦) can use tools and perform basic statistics, and they continue to surprise us. (乌鸦能够使用工具,并且还能进行简单的统计运算,它们不断地让我们感到惊讶。)”结合文章开篇提到乌鸦会使用工具、进行基础统计,接着介绍研究发现它们能形成心理模板并复制物体,体现乌鸦比我们所想的更聪明。可知,C选项“乌鸦的智力甚至比我们之前认为的还要高”最符合文章标题。故选C。

D 13. B 14. A 15. C
根据第二段“The study was done by Tokyo University of Agriculture. In the study, 30 cats were shown three plastic tubes (管子). One tube had the smell of their owner, one had the smell of a stranger, and the last one had no smell. The smells were taken from under the arm, behind the ear, and between the toes (脚趾头) of the people.(这项研究是由东京农业大学进行的。在这项研究中,30只猫被展示了三根塑料管。一根管子有它们主人的气味,一根有陌生人的气味,最后一根没有气味。这些气味取自人的腋下、耳后和脚趾间)”可知,第二段主要介绍了研究的过程,包括使用的猫的数量、展示的塑料管及其气味来源等。故选D。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“The researchers found that cats spent more time smelling the tube with the stranger’s smell than the one with their owner’s smell or the one with no smell. This means that cats can know whether a person is familiar or not just by their smell. Cats are known to have a strong sense of smell. They use it to talk with other cats. But this study finds that they may also use smell to demarcate people.(研究人员发现,猫闻带有陌生人气味的管子的时间比闻带有主人气味的管子或没有气味的管子的时间更长。这意味着猫仅凭气味就能知道一个人是否熟悉。众所周知,猫的嗅觉很灵敏。它们用嗅觉与其他猫交流。但这项研究发现,它们可能也会用嗅觉来demarcate不同的人)”可知,猫有很强的嗅觉,它们用嗅觉来和其他猫交流,而这项研究发现它们可能也用嗅觉来区分人,因此demarcate在这里的意思是“区分,辨别”,与Tell apart意思相近。故选B。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“However, the researchers are not sure if cats can know exactly who a person is by their smell. To answer that question, more studies are needed.(然而,研究人员并不确定猫是否能通过气味准确地知道一个人是谁。要回答这个问题,还需要更多的研究)”可知,研究人员对于猫能否通过气味准确识别特定的人还不确定,还需要更多的研究来证实。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是根据第一段“A new study finds that house cats can tell the difference between the smell of their owner and the smell of a stranger.(一项新的研究发现,家猫能够区分主人的气味和陌生人的气味)”以及最后一段“In the end, the study finds that cats use their nose to know if a person is someone they know or not.(最后,研究发现猫用鼻子来判断一个人是否是它们认识的人)”可知,本文主要讲述的是研究发现猫可以通过气味来区分主人和陌生人,因此C选项“Cats Can Use Smell to Know Humans(猫可以用气味来识别人)”最符合文章主旨,可以作为最佳标题。
B. Though it sounds sensible there are many troubles.
B 17. F 18. C 19. G 20. E
根据前文“Upon reflection of the ideal social moral code (准则) within one sentence, it would be: be constructive (建设性的), not destructive (毁坏性的). (用一句话来反映理想的社会道德准则,应该是:建设性的,而不是破坏性的。)”以及后文“Sometimes it is difficult to determine if an act is exactly constructive or destructive. (有时很难确定一个行为究竟是建设性的还是破坏性的。)”可知,前句讲述一个理想的社会道德准则,后句讲述有时很难确定一个行为的性质,所以空处应是过渡句,B项“Though it sounds sensible, there are many troubles. (虽然这听起来很明智,但有很多麻烦。)”符合文意,承接上文,引出下文“很难确定一个行为究竟是建设性的还是破坏性的”这个麻烦。故选B。
【17题详解】
根据前文“One problem is that a behaviour can be both constructive and destructive to different degrees. (一个问题是,一种行为可能在不同程度上既有建设性,也有破坏性。)”以及后文“You get a thought in your mind to spank (打屁股) him as a punishment. However, you start to feel confused. It might show him that not listening to you and breaking things is not welcome, but on the other hand, spanking him will hurt him physically and perhaps teach him to use force in situations later in life. (你脑子里想要打他屁股作为惩罚。然而,你开始感到困惑。这可能会让他知道不听你的话,弄坏东西是不受欢迎的,但另一方面,打他会伤害他的身体,也许会教会他在以后的生活中使用武力。)”可知,前文提出本段主题,后面在举例详细说明,但是没给出孩子犯了什么错,所以空处应是孩子犯了什么错,F项“Say your son broke a glass vase after being warned several times. (假设你的儿子在被警告了几次之后打破了一个玻璃花瓶。)”说明了孩子犯的错误,符合文意。故选F。
【18题详解】
根据前文“You get a thought in your mind to spank (打屁股) him as a punishment. However, you start to feel confused. It might show him that not listening to you and breaking things is not welcome, but on the other hand, spanking him will hurt him physically and perhaps teach him to use force in situations later in life. (你脑子里想要打他屁股作为惩罚。然而,你开始感到困惑。这可能会让他知道不听你的话,弄坏东西是不受欢迎的,但另一方面,打他会伤害他的身体,也许会教会他在以后的生活中使用武力。)”可知,C项“There is no exact wrong or right in these moments. (在这些时刻没有绝对的对错之分。)”是对前文例子的总结,且和后文“However, through your own reasoning, you can decide to what degree it would be beneficial or harmful to him and the situation at hand. (然而,通过你自己的推理,你可以决定在多大程度上对他和手头的情况有益或有害。)”构成转折关系,符合文意。故选C。
【19题详解】
分析设空,位于段首,为本段中心句,根据后文“For example, for some people, construction can never involve violence, while for others, it could even be an unavoidable part. Take the example of killing Hitler. Killing someone is definitely termed a destructive act. However, in light of the circumstances, I would assume that the majority of people would agree that killing Hitler would be seen as a constructive act. Therefore, our definitions often determine our values. (例如,对有些人来说,建设性行为绝不包含暴力;而对另一些人来说,暴力甚至可能是其中不可避免的一部分。以杀死希特勒为例,杀人无疑是一种破坏性行为。然而,考虑到当时的特殊情况,我想大多数人都会认同,杀死希特勒应被视为一种建设性行为。因此,我们的定义往往决定了我们的价值观。)”可知,本段主要讲述了一个行为的性质取决于我们的定义,所以G项“Another trouble to consider is the definition we give to construction and destruction. (另一个需要考虑的问题是我们对建设和破坏的定义。)”符合文意,为本段中心句,其中definition为同词复现。故选G。
【20题详解】
根据前文“Additionally, construction can be seen as good to some, and bad to others. What a majority might take as a constructive might be seen as destructive to a minority. Is there a way to determine which side is correct? It is almost impossible. (而且,建设性行为对一些人来说是好的,对另一些人来说却可能是坏的。大多数人认为具有建设性的事情,对少数人来说可能被视为具有破坏性。有没有办法判断哪一方是正确的呢?这几乎是不可能的。)”可知,前句提出问题,给出了直接回答,空处应是对其进一步解释,所以E项“Being in the majority does not mean it is correct, or more proper. (占多数并不意味着它是正确的,或更适当的。)”是对前面内容的进一步解释,符合文意。故选E。

Nevertheless, she drew strength from her coach's reminder to trust her abilities, not superstitions. As the race commenced, she dashed forward, hurdling with grit despite the unfamiliar footwear. At the last obstacle, Jobie summoned extraordinary effort, leaped over flawlessly, and charged towards the finish.
Marisol cried out. "Jobie, you broke a record! Lucky you!" Astonished, Jobie gazed at the clock displaying her unprecedented achievement. Losing her lucky shoes had led her to discover that true fortune lay within her resilience, dedication, and self-assurance. Marisol hugged her friend, affirming that external tokens like lucky spikes mattered less than internal fortitude. This epiphany bolstered Jobie's confidence, preparing her for any future contest, spike-dependent or not. The Riverside Middle School team reveled in this win, now poised to conquer the County Championships with unwavering self-belief and prowess.
