My husband was born there, but his family sent him to study in Italy. Before he left, his mother told him, “As long as I write in pencil, you don’t come back. When I write to you in pen, it’s safe to return.” She never wrote in pen. So, like the boy in Vittorio De Sica’s film The Bicycle Thief, he lived a poor life in Italy. He applied to go to America, but was rejected. He was accepted by Canada, though, and he then took a train to San Francisco and stayed there illegally. He became a US citizen until we married. Seven years later, he felt it was safe to visit Romania. He hadn’t seen his mother, two sisters, and two brothers since he was 16. When we reached Bucharest, his family were waiting outside his sister’s house to greet us. After lengthy hugging, kissing, and crying, his family also hugged me, the American wife with two kids. Romania didn’t have many dry cleaners. Most homes had old-fashioned washing machines but no dryers, and it was a hot summer. My husband’s relatives didn’t want to risk dirtying their clothes. Their solution was simply startling: the women dined in only their underclothes. The men were shirtless. I, of course, having just met them, ate fully clothed. I washed my clothes by hand and hung them outdoors to dry. On the last night of our three-week stay, we had a large family dinner. I was tired of washing my clothes. So I palled my dress over my head and placed it on the chair behind me. The table broke out in applause. Even with my poor Romanian, I understood that they were saying, “She’s part of our family now.” 4. When would the mother write to her son in pen? A. When the family was rich. B. When the trip to Europe was safe. C. When Romania was safe. D. When his son became a US citizen. 5. How did the writer’s husband become an American? A. By applying for a stay. B. By marrying an American woman. C. By studying in America. D. By working for an American company. 6. Why was the writer completely accepted by her husband’s family? A. Because she offered gifts to the whole family. B. Because she spoke her husband’s language. C. Because she washed all the clothes by hand. D. Because she had dinner with underclothes only. 7. What message does the author want to convey through the story? A. “East and west, home is best.” B. “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” C. “Marry a dog and follow a dog forever.” D. “The cause of true love never runs smooth.” C Diving in the ocean, marine biologist Erika Woolsey has seen how coral reefs (珊瑚礁) are being damaged by climate change. It has made her decide to find a way to share her experience —including those who can’t easily explore the ocean. Through her non-profit, The Hydrous, Woolsey is using virtual reality to bring the ocean to everyone. Scientists, filmmakers and divers are taking people on immersive (沉浸式的) virtual dives, attracting attention to reef damage and expecting action to protect our sea. About 25% of marine species depend on coral reefs. However, climate change, pollution and overfishing have done harm to around half the world’s shallow water coral reefs. Twenty years of underwater exploration has given Woolsey a detailed understanding of the dangerous situations facing reefs. “I’ve seen this first-hand shift. Healthy colourful coral reefs become what look like the moonscape step by step,” Woolsey says. It is through this experience that The Hydrous team set out to recreate with their award-winning film Immerse. Intended to watch with a VR headset, viewers join Woolsey for a nine-minute guided virtual div e on the coral reefs, immersed in a 360-degree underwater view. They swim alongside sea turtles and sharks before witnessing the worsening of the reefs. The experience often brings out strong feelings. “As soon as people take off that headset and look me in the eye, they want to tell me a story about their ocean experience,” Woolsey says. “It’s that human connection to our ocean that will solve our ocean problems.” Woolsey hopes advances in camera technology will allow her team to take more and more people to places in the ocean that are underexplored and places further away from human civilization. They are developing a virtual experience that will put the people in the role of a marine biologist, carrying out biodiversity surveys underwater, and even transporting the viewers to space to monitor global sea surface temperatures. 8. Why did Erika Woolsey set up The Hydrous? A. To collect money for ocean protection. B. To let the public know about coral reefs better. C. To help people enjoy the ocean’s beauty. D. To encourage people to protect the ocean. 9. What does the underlined word “shift” in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A. change. B. experience. C. material. D. scene. 10. What can people know through the immersive dive? A. The story about the ocean. B. The situation of coral reefs. C. The connection with sea life. D. The way to protect the ocean. 11 What does Erika Woolsey hope to do in the future? A. To bring more fun during the lockdown. B. To train talents for environment protection. C. To help people learn more about the ocean. D. To discover more places that need protection. D Firstly, I know this is a first world problem and I need to “dry my eyes”. I have a very small dishwasher in a very small kitchen. The other week when a friend showed me her new house with a big kitchen and a large dishwasher, I felt my throat got tight. I didn’t quite know what to say. And why did I even compare my life with other people’s life? Maybe you’ll agree you have a similar experience. Why is this? I think a huge factor is how addicted we’ve all become to social media. We stare at people’s beautiful vacation photos at some great party wondering, “Why isn’t my life like that?” We forget that what we see are the carefully edited highlights of a person’s life aiming to give an impression of what they want to see — not necessarily how their life actually is. Social media seem to give us anxiety that we aren’t doing as well as others or living up to expectations that we put on ourselves. On a good day, we can use this life envy to inspire ourselves — if they can do it, so can we! But on a bad day, we just feel angry, sad, disappointed, and worst of all, bitter. No one wants to admit to feeling envious. It is such a prohibited subject — desiring what others have. So how do we overcome our little green-eyed monster? Stepping away from social media is a start. The less we pay attention to what other people are doing, the fewer opportunities we have to compare ourselves to them. Next step is to give ourselves some tolerance (宽容) and know that it’s a completely natural feeling. It doesn’t make us bad persons; it’s just a part of being human. And most importantly, we need to start focusing on ourselves instead of others. The root of the problem is more a problem with how we’re feeling about ourselves than those we envy. My mom used to always tell me to “row your own boat”: and I think about that little phrase all the time. It may not be the biggest for it — and who knows where the journey will take us? Sure it beats feeling envious. 12. Describing his/ her personal experience, the author aims to ______. A. introduce a topic B. give a suggestion C. present a definition D. highlight an opinion 13. What does the author think of social media? A. It weakens face-to-face communication. B. It helps to overcome negative feelings. C. It brings information-sharing culture. D. It fails to truly reflect people’s life. 14. Which of the following might the author agree with? A. Noticing Tom’s new car, you post your car photos to impress others. B. Seeing Mark’s success in business, you think you are not as good as him. C. Knowing Amy’s moved to a big house, you think it wrong to feel unhappy. D. Hearing Betty has got a nice new job, you shift your focus on what you have. 15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage? A. To inform us of the ways to cure anxiety. B. To tell us how to deal with feeling envious. C. To warn us of the bad effects of social media. D. To explain why people always compare with others: 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Happiness can come from your state of mind, your view on life, and your willingness to accept certain situations. Every weekend, he would go to his grandfather’s house, although he didn’t particularly enjoy it. His grandfather was very strict with Peter. He demanded that Peter develop two good habits: being punctual (准时的) and staying organized. To help his grandson develop these habits, the grandfather took certain measures. For instance, Peter had to be in the dining room sharply at 12:00 noon for lunch, or else he would have no meal. Peter sometimes felt that his grandfather was too strict, but he dared not voice his dissatisfaction. This week was no exception. Peter arrived at his grandfather’s house as usual. His grandfather was busy cooking in the kitchen, the smell of the food filling the air. Peter, left on his own, wandered into the living room to play. There, he accidentally knocked over the first-aid kit that was placed on the table. The contents in the kit spilled all over the floor, small bottles of pills scattered everywhere. Peter paid no attention to the chaos he had caused. He glanced at the mess, then remembered that David, his friend from next door, was home alone. Awakened by the thought of watching cartoons with David, Peter hurried next door, leaving the spilled contents of the first-aid kit behind. In the kitchen, the grandfather, who was chopping vegetables, suddenly felt unwell. His heart began to race, and he realized that he was having a heart attack. He struggled to the living room to get his medicine. However, when he got there, all he saw was the overturned first-aid kit and the pills scattered on the floor. The grandfather bent down with difficulty, his heart racing with anxiety as he searched for the blue bottle that contained his heart medicine. The precious seconds ticked by, and he felt his strength fading. Time was running out, and Peter didn’t know it. The little boy was completely unaware of the danger his grandfather was facing, immersed in the fun of the cartoon, laughing from time to time. The clock struck 12 but the cartoon was still five minutes away from ending. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Finally, after a desperate search, Peter spotted the small blue bottle hidden under the sofa. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 绵阳中学实验学校2023级高二(下)第三学月考试 英语试题 (考试时间:120分钟 总分:150分) 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 One possible version: The clock struck 12 but the cartoon was still five minutes away from ending. Although Peter really wanted to finish watching the cartoon, he tore himself away from the cartoon and went home. As soon as Peter walked in, he was scared to see his grandfather lying on the ground. He quickly ran over and asked what was wrong. His grandfather, in a faint voice, uttered, “Blue bottle... find the blue bottle...” Peter immediately dropped to his knees and started frantically searching the floor. At that moment, he was filled with regret for not tidying up the mess he made when he knocked over the first-aid kit. Finally, after a desperate search, Peter spotted the small blue bottle hidden under the sofa. He rushed over, reached out to grab the bottle and handed it to his grandfather, tears welling up his eyes and his voice trembling as he apologized, “Grandpa, I’m sorry!” His grandfather, after taking the medicine, gently patted Peter on the shoulder and said, “Thank God you’ve come home in time and find the life-saving medicine for me.” Realizing Grandpa was out of danger, Peter felt a mixed surge of guilt and comfort overwhelming him, and at this moment, he realized the importance of being punctual and staying organized. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
