III. Teaching Procedures
1. Lead - in (5 minutes)
Activity: Show some pictures of emotions and situations, e.g., a hopeful child, a helpless animal. Ask students to describe them with simple words, then introduce the idea that we can use suffixes to form new adjectives.
Purpose: Arouse students’ interest and lead in the topic of suffixes -ful and -less.
2. Presentation (8 minutes)
Explanation: Present the basic rule: We can add the suffix -ful or -less to some nouns to form adjectives. -ful means “full of”, -less means “without”.
Examples: Use the textbook examples, like “care → careful/careless”, “hope → hopeful/hopeless”, and explain how the meaning changes with the suffixes.
3. Practice (15 minutes)
Task A: Guide students to do Task A. Work in pairs to complete the table. Walk around to help. After finishing, check answers as a class, discussing which nouns can take the suffixes and which cannot.
Task B: For Task B, have students read Daniel’s diary entry. Ask them to add the correct suffix -ful or -less to the nouns in brackets. First, let students try individually, then check answers together, explaining the choices.
4. Production (10 minutes)
Task C: Ask students to do Task C. First, have them collect more words with -ful or -less (can use dictionaries). Then, let them describe an experience with a friend using these words. Invite some students to share their descriptions, giving positive feedback and corrections.
5. Summary (3 minutes)
Teacher’s Summary: Recap the rules of forming adjectives with -ful and -less, and emphasize the key points of correct usage.
Student’s Reflection: Ask one or two students to share what they’ve learned and what new words they’ve mastered.
