二、阅读理解
Every year, when school finishes for the summer holiday, thousands of teenagers make money by doing summer jobs. We spoke to two young people who have had active, outdoor jobs and asked them about their experiences. Here is what they told us:
Aaron, 16, Australia
Summer job: lifeguard
I enjoyed my summer as a lifeguard. The beach was a great place to work, and the views of the ocean were beautiful, but there wasn’t much time to relax. It’s a serious job and someone has to watch the swimmers all the time. We always worked with a partner. Each lifeguard watched for an hour and then took a break. I’m proud to say that my partner and I saved seven people this summer.
As well as being very strong swimmers, lifeguards should be at least sixteen years old and have qualifications (资格) in first-aid and water-rescue techniques (技术). I did a training program and learned these skills before I started work.
Yasmin, 18, U.K.
Summer Job: activity leader
This summer, I worked at a children’s summer camp as an activity leader. It was tiring but fun. We organized sports, games, and activities for the kids. We also took the older children swimming in the river. In the evenings, we organized dances and quizzes. Most of the time the kids were great, and I worked with some lovely people and made some really good friends.
It was quite well-paid, and you were so busy that you didn’t have time to spend any money. I lived for free in the camp accommodations (住宿). All our meals were free, too, so I saved a lot of money over the summer.
41.Who was the most likely Aaron’s partner during the summer holiday?
A.Alex loves the beach but knows little about first-aid.
B.17-year-old Max has water-rescue techniques.
C.Bruce is fifteen years old and he is a strong swimmer.
D.Willy is afraid of the water and can’t swim.
42.What did Yasmin think of the summer job?
A.Free. B.Boring. C.Interesting. D.Serious.
43.According to the text, which of the following is TRUE?
A.Aaron worked alone during the summer holiday.
B.Aaron worked for a long time and had no break.
C.Yasmin made lots of money during the summer holiday.
D.Yasmin paid for the camp accommodations.
44.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?

Answers:
Ai Akasaki 16, Japan
Many Japanese high school students feel worried about how they look. Unlike people in western countries, people are usually shy and quiet in Japan. This makes students less confident and stop them from showing who they are. For example, sometimes they wear masks because of allergic reactions (过敏症状) in spring. However, even in other seasons, many of my classmates still keep their masks on. They feel nervous about showing their faces.
Grace Patterson 13, Australia
At my school, not many people worry about how they look. In Australia, we have people from many different cultures, so there are many different ideas about beauty and style. People won’t stop being your friend just because of how you look. In Australia, schools let students truly be themselves, and people care more about your personality than your appearance. They even dislike to follow their favourite singers.
Luna Serrano 14, Mexico
Many students in Mexico feel nervous about how they look. For example, I’ve seen classmates get anxious when they get pimples (青春痘) on their faces. These worries are common among teenagers as our bodies change and grow. Although these worries can be hard to get through, it helps you know yourself better and feel happier. Focus on what you’re good at. Remember, nobody is perfect, and it’s OK to look different.
48.Why did Zhang post the questions on her blog?
A.She wants to share her personal experience.
B.She wants to make new friends from all over the world.
C.She wants to ask her teachers some questions about looks.
D.She wants to know how other teenagers think about looks.
49.Why do Japanese students worry about their looks?
A.They easily become fat.
B.They are shy and not confident.
C.They usually get pimples on their faces.
D.They want to look the same as super stars.
50.What do Australian students mostly agree with?
A.Kindness is more important than looks.
B.Schools should teach students how to look good.
C.Beauty matters a lot in Australia.
D.Good-looking people can be true friends.
51.Who may share similar worries about their appearance?
A.Students from Mexico and Japan. B.Students from Japan and Australia.
C.Students from China and Australia. D.Students from Australia and Mexico.

When talking about their personalities (性格), people often say they are extrovert or introvert. Introverts, according to Harvard Health, like staying in their own world while extroverts get joy through socializing (社交).
Interest in the personalities is rising, with the popularity of MBTI tests on Chinese social media. But some people are not sure about the differences between being introverts and having a social phobia (社恐). Some even make an excuse (借口) of having a social phobia to avoid any social events. Sometimes, it’s understandable, because they hope to keep a safe social distance (距离). However, there is a difference. People with the social phobia feel uncomfortable with their body and mind when socializing with others.
In Xiaohongshu, a user named Kuaile Xiaoyueba shares her experiences with people who use the social phobia as an excuse. As a teacher in high school, Xiaoyueba needs to check on her students’ studies often. When she asks them questions face to face, some students choose to answer. Others, however, don’t answer and leave without a word. In Xiaoyueba’s mind, some of them are truly shy but others are just labeling (贴标签) themselves as “too cool” to reply. “It makes me sad and even doubt myself,” she wrote.

THE MBTI PERSONALITY TEST
The MBTI test is a fun and useful way to learn more about yourself and others. It stands for Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and it helps you understand your personality type. The test is based on four pairs of opposite traits: Extroversion (外向的) and Introversion, Sensing and Intuition, Thinking and Feeling, and Judging and Perceiving. 56
Extroversion and Introversion look at whether you prefer being with people or spending time alone. 57 They enjoy being around others and get energy from social interactions. On the other hand, Introverts prefer quieter environments and enjoy spending time alone or with a few close friends.
58 Sensing types like to focus on facts and details, while Intuitive types are more interested in ideas and possibilities. This aspect helps you understand how you process information. The Thinking and Feeling is about how you make decisions. 59 They use logic and reason to make choices. Feeling types, however, consider how people will be affected by their decisions and try to make choices that are fair and caring.
Finally, the Judging and Perceiving looks at how you deal with tasks and planning. Judging types like to plan and organize. They like to have a plan and stick to it. Perceiving types, on the other hand, are more flexible and prefer to go with the flow.
In recent years, the MBTI test has gained popularity in various fields such as job market. 60 However, it’s crucial to remember that people are complex, and a simple four-letter code can’t fully describe the small difference of an individual’s personality.
A.Sensing and Intuition are the second pair.
B.Extroverts are outgoing and social.
C.Thinking types are logical and systematic.
D.Each pair describes a different aspect of your personality.
E.The MBTI test can help you find the perfect job.
F.Some companies use the MBTI test to assess the job-finders’ personalities.
G.It’s important to remember that no one is completely one type or the other.

Many years ago, there was a young girl named Pepsy, who was so bad-looking that she didn’t like going out. She hated to hear people say, Pepsy is not beautiful.
But there were times when she had to go out shopping. She was unhappy and sometimes even angry at people’s laughing at her bad looks (容貌).
One night, a strange old woman came to Pepsy’s house. She said to Pepsy, “My child, let me give you a hand. Put this magic flower in your hair, and you’ll become beautiful.” Pepsy did what the old woman said. Something strange happened. She became beautiful!
Pepsy was surprised to see herself so wonderful in the mirror. She ran happily out of her house. She walked on the street and smiled at everyone who looked at her. She became very friendly and nice, very different from what she was before. Almost all the people said. “Pepsy is so great today!”
Finally, Pepsy returned to her home. But before she entered the house, she saw the magic flower on the ground. She left the flower there before she hurried out. She didn’t wear it when walking on the street!

Scientists find that hard-working people can live longer than idle (不工作的) people. Career (职业) women are healthier than housewives. Evidence (证据) shows that the jobless are in poorer health than the job-holder. A report shows that whenever the unemployment rate (失业率) increases (增长) by 1%, the death rate increases by 2%. All this comes down to one point—work is helpful to health.
Why is work good for health? It is because work keeps people busy and away from loneliness. That’s also why career women are healthier and happier than housewives. Researches show that people feel unhappy and worried when they have nothing to do. Instead, the happiest are those who are busy. Many high achievers who love their careers feel that they are happiest when they are working hard. Work serves as a bridge between man and reality. By work, people come into contact (联系) with each other. If people take part in some activities, they can find friendship and warmth. This is helpful to health. The loss of work means the loss of everything. It affects man in spirit and makes him easy to get ill.
Besides, work gives one a sense of fulfillment (充实感). Work makes one feel his value in society. When a writer finishes his writing or a doctor successfully operates on a patient or a teacher sees his students grow, they are happy beyond words.
From the above we can know that the more you work, the happier and healthier you will be. Let us work hard and study well and live a happy and healthy life.

请认真阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容回答问题。
What is personality?
Personality is the pattern of feelings, thoughts and behavior shown through people’s lives. It makes them different from others.
Each person’s personality is made up of different personality characters such as kindness or shyness. These characters decide how people behave in different situations. For example, if someone shy is served the wrong meal in a restaurant, he probably won’t say anything. On the other hand, someone outgoing will probably complain and get the meal he ordered.
Where does your personality come from?
The human brain is like a computer because it controls the human body just as a computer controls a robot.
However, humans aren’t robots! We have personalities. The human brain has a special part giving us personality and allowing us to think for ourselves, unlike a computer. This part of the brain is called the mind.
Personality types
Clearly scientists cannot study the mind by looking inside someone’s brain! All they would see is blood and grey matter. To study the mind, scientists have to study human behavior. This includes watching people carefully and organizing personality tests like this one:
1. Do you think you’re pretty or good-looking?
2. Would you rather read a book or go to a party?
3. Do you have a large group of friends or just one or two close friends?
4. Do you mind talking in public or does it scare you?
5. Are you messy or neat?
6. Do you plan your work well or do you do things at the last minute?
Scientists believe that answers to these types of questions tell us something about a person’s personality characters. After asking thousands of people thousands of questions, they’ve found that some personality characters seem to go together. This has led scientists to believe that there’re certain personality types. For example, shy people are often quiet. They have an introverted (内向的) personality type. The opposite is an extroverted (外向的) personality type — people who are outgoing, talkative and like being around other people.
84.What is personality?

These students may feel “safe” or be showing their true self. But they may also be pushing away or hurting people who really care about them. Avoiding social situations will not help them over a long period of time.
Socializing should be a way to connect with others. No matter if we are introverts or extroverts, we all need to understand each other.

Last month, our school newspaper reporter interviewed a student and asked him some questions about his dream job.
Reporter: Would you introduce yourself to everybody?
Student: I’m Steve, a student in Grade 9.
Reporter: What’s your hobby?
Student: I’m interested in reading, especially the books about medicine.
Reporter: So you want to be a doctor?
Student: Yes. I have had this dream since I was 8 years old.
Reporter: Why would you want to be a doctor?
Student: Because of the influence of my family. My parents are doctors and I feel so proud of them because their work is meaningful.
Reporter: Do you have any plans to achieve your dream?
Student: Of course, I have. As we all know, studying medicine is a long road. So, first, I will stick to my dream whatever difficulties I meet. In the face of them, I hope I can find ways to solve them actively rather than give up. Second, I’ll be ready to bear trouble and work hard. The profession of a doctor is not as easy as we think. It requires a huge effort behind it. So I will work hard. Third, I’ll exercise more. Being a doctor needs a lot of physical work. Without good physical condition, I can’t serve the patients well. In short, while I am firm (坚定的) in my goal, I will try my best to complete the plan. Then I can get closer to my goal step by step.
Reporter: Thanks for your answering. Wish your dream come true!

71.Did Pepsy hate going out?
72.Why did almost all the people say “Pepsy is so great today!”?
73.What is the real magic in the passage?
74.Do you think one’s looks are decided by one’s emotions (情绪)? Explain.

85.Why is the human brain like a computer?
86.How do scientists study human behavior?
87.How many personality types are mentioned in this passage?
88.What decides your personality?(请自拟一句话作答)
