Millions of families face floods, tornadoes and other natural disasters every year. In Australia, for example, its wildfires from 2019 to 2020 were caused by the high temperature and a drought. They took away the lives of hundreds of people and billions of animals! While you can't stop disasters from happening, you can stay safe during one if you know what to do. Flood Floods can happen very suddenly. Flood water can be deeper than it looks. It can carry you away, so stay away! Glass, snakes, and dirty things can be in flood water, so don't drink it even if you are thirsty. Tornado A tornado happens during some storms. If there's a tornado warning, go someplace, such as a small and sturdy(结实的)bathroom, which is safe from the wind and flying things. Remember to keep away from windows or anything heavy that might fall on you. Earthquake You should move away from things that might fall. Get down under something that's strong if you can't rush out of the building right away. Protect your neck and head with your arm. If you're outside, go to an open space. Stay away from trees or anything that might fall over and hurt you. Bushfire Bushfires, also known as wildfires, are common across the world during the scorching days. It is important that you try to stay calm. Some fires can start so quickly that they threaten(威胁)homes and people within minutes, so your safest choice is always to leave early. She knew what was happening because she learnt about underwater earthquakes at school only a few weeks' earlier, a newspaper reported. “I was on the beach and the water started to go funny,” Tilly told the reporter from the newspaper. “There were bubbles(气泡)and the water went back suddenly. I knew there was going to be a tsunami. I told Mum,” she said. Tilly's mother and the hotel workers acted quickly. They cleared people from the beach just minutes before a huge wave reached the land. Luckily, no one died. Tilly's teacher was very proud of her. “She's a very clever girl. It is very lucky that we learnt about this kind of tsunami in our science class just two weeks before Christmas,” he told the newspaper. 29.What did Tilly learn about at school? Underwater earthquakes. 30.How did Tilly find there was going to be a tsunami? There were bubbles and the water went back suddenly. 31.Who cleared people from the beach? Tilly's mother and the hotel workers. 32.Which subject do you like best at school? Why? Write 20 words or more. I like music best. It seems that every day we read about at least one of these somewhere in the world. But every year, somewhere another kind of disaster causes great harm to plants and people. It's something much smaller and not so wellknown as an earthquake or a food—it's an insect called the locust. The locust usually does things alone—it lives on its own and eats on its own. But, sometimes, something changes the way nature works. When the number of locusts increases somewhere and there are lots of plants to eat, the locusts get together in swarms. Perhaps the most dangerous locust is the desert locust. It is found in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia in about 60 countries altogether. When desert locusts swarm, they bring problems to onetenth of all the humans in the world. The numbers are huge and scary. A swarm of desert locusts can be 1,200 km2 in size—imagine an area that is over 20 km wide and 50 km long, full of locusts! Each locust eats its own weight in plants every day—so a swarm of desert locusts can eat more than 150 million kilos of food in one day. They can also fly very long distances—in 1954 a swarm of locusts from northwest Australia few thousands of miles to Spain and finally landed in Great Britain! It's no wonder that farmers in many countries of the world fear the desert locusts more than snakes and spiders. It's the desert locust that brings hunger to people all over the world. ( B )1.What does the underlined word “swarms” probably mean in paragraph 2? A.Plants. B.Groups. C.Animals. D.Problems. ( A )2.Where can you find the most dangerous locusts? A.In Africa. B.In Spain. C.They are able to fly at a very high speed. D.They influence people all over the world. ( D )4.How does the writer support his idea in paragraph 4? A.By giving examples. B.By telling stories. C.By making comparison. D.By listing numbers. ( C )5.What would be the best title for the passage? A.A Great Danger B.The Crying Plants C.A Flying Disaster D.The Hungry Animals 1 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
