I lived in a small village. I liked throwing stones because I had no other boys to play with and I became very skillful. One day a bird flew to a tree near me. I found a nice stone, and threw it with my best skill. It hit the bird on the head and it dropped dead.
I was sorry the moment I saw it fall off the tree. But it was too late. All that long another bird flew about, and chirped so sadly that it made my heartache. At this moment I heard a voice, “Oh, boy, don’t throw stones at birds again.” “The stone can kill the bird and also hit yourself” an old woman said. She was very kind and friendly, and she told me her story.
She loved small animals. One morning while she was walking in the park, she found two weak birds on the grass. She took them home and put them in a small cage(笼子). She cared for them with love and the birds both grew strong. They thanked her with a wonderful song every morning. However something happened one day. She left the door of the cage open. The larger bird flew from the cage. She thought that it would fly back as it flew close, she caught it. She was excited to get it back. Suddenly she felt strane. She opened hands and looked sadly at the dead bird. Her great love killed the bird. The other bird was moving around in the cage. She could feel its great need for freedom. It wanted to fly into the clear and blue sky. At once she took the bird out of the cage and let it fly away. The bird circled once, twice. She enjoyed watching the bird flying and singing.
Now I know a lesson. The easiest way to lose love is to hold it too tight the best way to keep love is to give it wings.

Do you know about a special number that helps us learn about circles? It’s called Pi, and it’s a number that never ends. Pi starts with 3.14, but it goes on and on with more numbers we can’t see.
A long time ago, a smart man from China named Zu Chongzhi found a way to figure out Pi. He studied some cool math and discovered that Pi is about 3.1415926. Knowing this number is like having a magic key to understanding circles better.
People all around the world celebrate (庆祝) Pi Day on March 14th (3-14). They do this because the date looks like the first three numbers of pi: 3-14. On this day, people do fun math activities and learn more about circles. Students in the US usually eat pie and throw pie at each other. Fukuoka High School in Japan celebrates Pi Day with pi memorization games. They try to remember as many numbers of pi as they can. It shows their memory skills.
The celebration of Pi Day starts a culture about pi. It also makes people enjoy math through all kinds of celebrations.
Now, let’s look at some interesting ways in which pi helps us in daily life:
Making a beautiful circle: If you want to draw a circle with a diameter (直径) of 8 cm, you can use pi to know how long to draw the circle. Just multiply (乘) 8 by pi (about 3.14), and you will get how long the circle is.
Measuring wheels (测量车轮): If you have a bike, pi helps you find out how far it goes with one full turn of its wheel. Just measure the wheel’s diameter and multiply by pi.
26. What does the underlined part “figure out” in the second paragraph refer to?
A. draw B. forget C. lose D. understand

A. 0. 000001 B. 0. 0000001 C. 0. 00000001 D. 0. 000000001
28. Which activity is mentioned to celebrate Pi Day in Japan?
A. Singing songs about pi. B. Playing sports.
C. Remembering as many numbers of pi as they can. D. Eating pie and throwing pie at each other.
29. How does pi help us when using a bike?
A. we can color it nicely. B. we have the ability to make it rounder.
C. we can make it bigger. D. we can find out how far it goes with one turn.
30. The text mainly tells us ________.
A. how to draw circles B. a story about Zu Chongzhi
C. what pi is and how to use it D. how people celebrate Pi Day
