How laughter can help you learn language
If you’re laughing during your English lesson, that’s probably a good thing. Besides making a class more fun, humour can be a good language learning tool.
First, there are good reasons to keep stress levels low in the language classroom. People usually learn a language and use it much more easily when they are relaxed—and what reduces stress more effectively than laughter? And in a class, sharing a joke can help students and teachers build a friendly atmosphere that encourages confidence.
Also, research has found that humour helps our brains feel good, making us want to learn and remember better, and that works for any subject! Humour can be a test of your language skills, too.
Understanding jokes requires not just some basic knowledge of words and sentences—you need to know why they’re funny! For example, a lot of jokes are based on wordplay (双关语), so the listener may need to know more than one meaning of a word to understand the jokes.
It’s no surprise that both students and teachers expect some humour in language lessons. But what kinds of jokes are the most popular? One study asked nearly 250 foreign language learners what they thought. The researchers found that students really liked it when teachers made funny comments during lessons. Students also liked funny cartoons and memes (网络梗).
6. Why does laughter help us learn language better?
A. It makes us feel stressed. B. It helps us relax and remember things better.
C. It can replace word knowledge. D. It helps us speak faster without thinking.
7. What can we infer from the passage?
A. To understand jokes, one needs to know words'different meanings.
B. All jokes in class are based on cartoons.
C. Students don’t like teachers’ funny words.
D. Humour only works for language learning.
8. What is the main idea of the text?
A. How to tell good jokes in English class.
B. Laughter helps language learning in many ways.
C. Why wordplay is difficult for students.
D. A study of 250 English teachers.
9. Where does the passage most probably come from?
A. A travel guide. B. A science study magazine.
C. A storybook for kids. D. A school sports notice.
10. How is the passage organized?
A. It gives an opinion and explains reasons.
B. It tells a story and gives an example.
C. It lists problems and gives advice.
D. It compares two different ideas.

The Magical Transformation of Xingfu Town
Xingfu Town, located in a remote area in Gansu Province, used to be a place with limited development opportunities. The local kids had to endure a long-and-arduous journey to reach their school, which was far away from their homes. They had to walk along narrow and bumpy paths, and in bad weather, it was even more challenging.
A significant change took place in 2018. The local government, recognizing the town’s potential, launched an innovative cultural-tourism integration project. They restored ancient buildings, created cultural exhibition halls, and developed unique folk-custom experience areas.
By 2023, Xingfu Town had transformed into a popular tourist destination. A new-type “smart school bus” system was also established for the students. This special school bus was equipped with advanced navigation and safety monitoring systems. Now, children can reach school in 40 minutes. Previously, it took them at least two hours to get to school on foot.
“Before, going to school was like a tiring adventure. I was always worried about being late or getting hurt on the way,” said 12-year-old Li Mei, a student from Xingfu Town. “But now, on the smart school bus, I can enjoy the view of our beautiful town and feel excited about the new day at school.”
The “smart school bus” not only shortens the travel time for students but also injects new vitality into the town. More and more tourists are attracted by the town’s unique culture and beautiful scenery. Many villagers have started small businesses, such as handicraft shops and local-food restaurants.
Wang Gang, a local entrepreneur who participated in the project, hopes that the children in the town can take advantage of the convenience brought by the “smart school bus” to gain more knowledge and experiences. He wishes that they will one day return to their hometown with new ideas and skills to further develop Xingfu Town.
11. Which word best describes the kids’ old way to school in Xingfu Town?
A. Convenient. B. Comfortable. C. Difficult. D. Relaxing.
12. What was the key factor for the transformation of Xingfu Town?
A. The beautiful natural scenery around the town.

13. How long does it take the kids to go to school now?
A. 20 minutes. B. 40 minutes. C. One hour. D. Two hours.

C. longer but more interesting trips D. dangerous but exciting experiences

Cathy knew that she had an essay due on Monday. However, instead of beginning work on it today, she waited until the last minute and started on Sunday night. Of course, it was impossible to do a good job writing an essay in one night, so she got a bad grade. She then kicked herself for not starting earlier and promised to do better next time, but she didn’t.
Does Cathy’s story sound familiar? Like Cathy, many of us procrastinate — we put off doing something important until the last moment. But why do we do this? Some research shows that we procrastinate because of negative feelings, such as fear or worry. We are afraid of doing a poor job or getting bad grades. We think that we might fail. We put off doing the work in order to avoid having these bad feelings. Sadly, we are more likely to fail or do poorly when we procrastinate. This creates even more negative feelings and makes it more likely that we will procrastinate the next time.
The long-term solution to this problem is to deal with our negative feelings. We need to forgive ourselves for failing. We need to accept that sometimes we will not meet the goal. We also need to realize that difficult work isn’t always a bad thing. It is through difficulty that we learn and grow.
So what can we do? Here are some tips. First, realize that once we face our fears and get started, our fears often go away, and we start to enjoy the work. Second, break large projects into small parts, each with their own smaller deadline. Take each thing step by step. Third, reward yourself for getting a step done. Relax or do something fun, then get back to work. Finally, remove temptation (诱惑). This means if you watch TV to put off work, then work at the library. If you chat with friends to put off work, then work alone and turn off your phone. Find a place to work that does not have such distractions (干扰).
In the end, it is up to you and the actions you take to overcome procrastination. So what are you waiting for?
16. Why did Cathy get a bad grade on her essay?
A. She didn’t understand the topic of the essay. B. She finished her essay in only one night.
C. She forgot to hand in her essay on Monday. D. She spent too much time checking her writing.
17. What does the underlined word “procrastinate” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. 延迟 B. 继续 C. 放弃 D. 改变
18. What is the main reason for procrastination according to the text?
A. Too much homework. B. Bad working habits.
C. Negative feelings like fear and worry. D. No help from others.
19. Which of the following is NOT the tip to stop procrastinating?
A. Divide big tasks into small ones. B. Give yourself a reward after finishing a step.
C. Stay away from things that distract you. D. Wait until you feel completely ready to start.
20. What is the writer’s purpose of writing this passage?
A. To tell Cathy’s story of writing an essay.
B. To introduce the problem of procrastination and ways to solve it.
C. To show how negative feelings influence our daily life.
D. To explain how to get good grades in school.

A. Divide big tasks into small ones. B. Give yourself a reward after finishing a step.
