Do you think of white when someone talks about a polar bear? In fact, the polar bear does not have white fur. It just seems to be white. Polar bears have a very good sense of smell. It helps them find food. During summer, polar bears sleep longer in the day, because they are able to find their food more easily at night. Usually, after a meal, polar bears have a short sleep. A polar bear can have 2-3 babies at a time. They live with their mothers until they are about two and a half years old.
However, polar bears will die out soon because of people. There are only 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears in the world. Those polar bears are trying to survive(生存) today. The number of them is becoming smaller and smaller because of the loss of sea ice—polar bears mostly live on the sea ice, not land ice. This is happening because of global warming. Besides, they also have to face pollution, being hunted and so on.
Some people don't care, but other people want to save polar bears. Join them and try to make the world a better place for those beautiful and lovely animals.

四、阅读理解。
Every summer, about three billion birds migrate(迁徙) from North Africa to Europe and Asia. In winter, they return to North Africa. As they travel from one place to another, they use the sun, stars, smells and landforms(地形) to find the way.
The migration is long and difficult, and some of the birds die during each trip. However, it is not this twice-a-year journey that poses the greatest risk to these birds. The main danger to the birds comes from hunters all over the Mediterranean(地中海地区), where lots of migratory birds are killed every year. As a result, the bird population is falling.
In countries along the Mediterranean, many migratory birds are illegally(非法地) trapped or killed. Besides traps, hunters also use electronic calls to catch birds. They make bird sounds to attract the real birds. Some hunters also use nets to catch birds as they fly close to the sea. “There are no birds,” said one local man. “We walk for hours without seeing any. It's really scary.”
Birds are in danger, and many countries are working to solve this problem. In the European Union, hunting migratory birds is illegal in some countries, while in others, it is strictly controlled—the birds can only be hunted at a certain time of year. What's more, many nature-protection groups are making sure that laws are obeyed. This has been successful in many places. For example, Sicily, an island of Italy, was once a place where illegal bird hunting was common. Today, it has mostly eliminated(消除) bird hunting, and as a result, birdwatching is becoming popular there.
Wildlife organizations around the Mediterranean are helping to bring about change. “Hunting bans(禁令) are working,” said Martin Schneider-Jacoby, a bird scientist. “But there is still more to do. We hope to stop hunting and protect birds' living areas all over the Mediterranean. If this can be done, the number of birds will increase. There's a long way to go, but there is hope.”

五、任务型阅读。
The little wolf, White Fang, made an enemy of the dog, Lip-Lip. Lip-Lip attacked him whenever he could. He was bigger and stronger than White Fang and always won their fights. White Fang knew that he could not win a fight against Lip-Lip. He thought that he had to do something else to teach the dog a lesson.
One day, he was playing at a river bank when he saw Lip-Lip come. He suddenly got a good idea. He pretended(假装) to be hurt and unable to run fast. When Lip-Lip ran after him, he led Lip-Lip to the place where his mother stayed. When Lip-Lip got close to her, she turned Lip-Lip over and bit him until she let him go, but White Fang had a bigger problem.
Lip-Lip was the leader of the other dogs. They followed him and obeyed him. None of them would become friends with White Fang. Whenever he came near them, they attacked him.
White Fang was always alone. He was never allowed to play with the other dogs. This made him unhappy and angry. He often forgot how to behave well.
Several days later, White Fang saw a man take his mother on a small boat. He tried to follow them. He jumped into the river and swam after the boat. Another man came after White Fang on his boat. He lifted White Fang out of the water. White Fang tried to get away from the man, but the man hit him and threw him onto the boat.
White Fang was now very angry because he wanted to be with his mother. He forgot how powerful men were, and he bit the man. The man was so angry that he beat White Fang again and again. The man hurt him badly.
White Fang finally learned that he couldn't bite a man because if he did, he would be beaten badly.
