Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, London
No matter the weather, when Regent’s Park starts its theatre season, summer has truly begun. Surrounded by thick whistling trees and singing birds, you may as well be a thousand miles from the surrounding city.
This year sees a typically varied programme, opening with Twelfth Night and closing with Fiddler on the Roof, with plenty of other plays in between.

The Minack Theatre, Cornwall
Built into a cliff (悬崖) face in Porthcurno, you hardly need an excuse to visit this theatre.
This year sees touring productions of Little Shop of Horrors, The Massive Tragedy of Madame Bovary and the usual knowledge of Shakespeare amongst other things. If you want a show particularly fitting with the unique surroundings, check out The Pirates of Penzance playing in September.

[辽宁抚顺重点高中六校协作体2025高二期末]Most people aren’t familiar with where Lesotho is. When I was asked to go there as a teacher, I didn’t know either. Lesotho is a small, mountainous country surrounded by its larger neighbour, South Africa. Winters are so cold and dry that trees can only survive if they’re near a spring or river. So when I met Wilfred, who had many trees to plant on his way home, I had to see what he’d done.
My brother and I made the two-hour hike one winter morning. As we came around the mountain, we saw lots of trees. We continued on and reached Wilfred’s home in an area surrounded by a wonder: a garden with peach and pear trees.
I was amazed at what Wilfred had achieved, but he said most of the work was done by his father, Mr Pitso. I felt great admiration for Mr Pitso. He mentioned that he started planting peach trees 20 years earlier. At first, people were resentful, and several times others removed his trees because they felt it was unfair for him to have something they didn’t have.

To solve the problem, Mr Pitso gave his trees away freely to his neighbours. He also organised tree-planting days at the primary school where he worked and started a tree-buying cooperative to get funds from the government. He showed people how they could make tree-growing profitable by selling fruit and firewood. In times of drought, although he was in his sixties, he carried buckets of water from a small stream to his trees.
As we left, Mr Pitso told us that before he died, he hoped to see the barren (贫瘠的) valley around his home covered with trees. When faced with challenges in my life, I remember Mr Pitso’s dream. The poor primary school teacher living in the mountains of Lesotho gives me hope.

[全国新高考Ⅰ2024年1月·浙江]On September 7, 1991, the costliest hailstorm (雹暴) in Canadian history hit Calgary’s southern suburbs. As a result, since 1996 a group of insurance companies have spent about $2 million per year on the Alberta Hail Suppression Project. Airplanes seed threatening storm cells with a chemical to make small ice crystals fall as rain before they can grow into dangerous hailstones. But farmers in east-central Alberta—downwind of the hail project flights—worry that precious moisture (水分) is being stolen from their thirsty land by the cloud seeding.
Norman Stienwand, who farms in that area, has been addressing public meetings on this issue for years.“Basically, the provincial government is letting the insurance companies protect the Calgary-Edmonton urban area from hail,” Mr. Stienwand says, “but they’re increasing drought risk as far east as Saskatchewan.”
综合测试卷
32
The Alberta hail project is managed by Terry Krauss, a cloud physicist who works for Weather Modification Inc.of Fargo, North Dakota.“We affect only a very small percentage of the total moisture in the air, so we cannot be causing drought.” Dr. Krauss says.“In fact, we may be helping increase the moisture downwind by creating wetter ground.”
One doubter about the safety of cloud seeding is Chuck Doswell, a research scientist who just retired from the University of Oklahoma.“In 1999, I personally saw significant tornadoes (龙卷风) form from a seeded storm cell in Kansas,” Dr. Doswell says.“Does cloud seeding create killer storms or reduce moisture downwind? No one really knows, of course, but the seeding goes on.”
Given the degree of doubt, Mr. Stienwand suggests, “it would be wise to stop cloud seeding.” In practice, doubt has had the opposite effect. Due to the lack of scientific proof concerning their impacts, no one has succeeded in winning a lawsuit against cloud-seeding companies. Hence, private climate engineering can proceed in relative legal safety.

[广东深圳高级中学2025高二期末]With its ability to pass down complex information across many generations, human language almost certainly played a sizable part in humans’ ability to become a dominant species on the planet. Despite this, we know precious little about how human language developed. A paper published in Frontiers in Psychology proposes that we should look at ancient cave art to gain insights into how our ability for language came to be.
“Language doesn’t fossilise, but maybe in these cave drawings, we can see some of the beginnings of human beings as symbolic beings,” said Shigeru Miyagawa, MIT linguistics (语言学) professor and the paper’s lead author. Miyagawa and his co-authors propose that cave paintings exist at the intersection of communication between visual and aural (听觉的) cues.
综合测试卷
39
The linguists’ theory comes from the fact that many of the caves where art has been found are acoustic (声音的) “hot spots”.In these caves, sounds echo (回响) louder and more intensely as one goes deeper. Many of the drawings are located in these sections of the cave, and even some areas that would have been better for drawing on walls were ignored in favour of these spots. The drawings would then show sounds that humans made while in the caves. Think about how many examples of cave art that show various four-legged animals, including horses. The echoing of noises, be it tapping on rocks inside the cave or thunder from outside the cave, would have created sounds like horses running across the ground.
“This mix of sound and visual representation,” they write, “allowed early humans to enhance their ability to convey symbolic thinking to their fellows, as well as their ability to process aural and visual input as symbolic information.” Such symbolic thinking could have led to developing other types of communication, including sentences.
综合测试卷
40
Of course, this is not a declarative statement. A great deal more research is required before anything can be said in a definitive way. One thing Miyagawa does feel confident about is that it will further conversations about the importance of our art in our development as a species.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
From the first day he entered my classroom, Willard P.Frank existed in his own world, shutting out his classmates and me. My attempts at building a friendly relationship with him met with complete indifference. I could see that his classmates fared no better. Willard was strictly a loner who seemed to have no desire or need to break his silence.
Shortly after the Thanksgiving holiday, we received word of the annual Christmas collection of money for the less fortunate people in our school district.“Christmas is a season of giving,” I told my students.“There are a few students in the school who might not have a happy holiday season. By contributing to our Christmas collection, you will help buy food, clothing and toys for these needy people. We will start the collection tomorrow.”
When I called for the contributions the next day, I discovered that almost everyone had forgotten except for Willard P.Frank. The boy dug deep into his pants pocket as he walked slowly to my desk. Carefully, he dropped two quarters into the small container.“I don’t need

milk for lunch,” he mumbled (嘟哝).For a moment, just a moment, he smiled. Then he turned and walked back to his desk.
That night, after school, I took our few contributions to the school principal. I couldn’t help sharing the incident that had taken place.“I may be wrong, but I believe Willard might be getting ready to become a part of the world around him,” I told the principal.“Yes,” he nodded.“And we might do well to have him share a bit of his world with us. I just received a list of the poor families in our school who most need help through the Christmas collection. Here, take a look at it.” As I gazed down to read, I discovered Willard P.Frank and his family were the top names on the list. Seeing this, I decided to do something for him.
