The decision to act properly with first aid can mean the difference between life and death. Begin by introducing yourself to the injured or sick person. Explain that you are a first aid provider and are willing to help. The person must give you permission to help them. Do not touch them until they agree to be helped. If you encounter someone who is seriously injured or ill, you can assume that they would want you to help them. This is known as “implied consent”.
The first step in any emergency is the recognition of the problem and providing help. When someone is seriously injured or ill, you should always use the emergency response system by calling 911 in the United States, or your own locality’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) number. If you’re not sure how serious the situation is, the 911/EMS operator will ask you a series of questions to determine the severity of the situation.
Remain on the line until additional help arrives, or until the 911/EMS operator tells you to hang up. Emergency system operators can guide you through the steps of performing

cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (心肺复苏), using an automated external defibrillator (AED) (自动体外除颤器), or delivering basic care until additional help arrives.
Whether you are at home, work, or school, know where the first aid kit and the AED are kept and be familiar with their contents. Know how to use the EMS in your area. Be aware of any policies in the workplace regarding medical emergencies.
After determining the problem, the next step in providing help is to determine the responsiveness of the injured or sick person. The best way to determine this is to talk loudly to them: “Are you okay?” After determining responsiveness, call for help. Look for any medical identification, such as a necklace or a bracelet. This may provide a valuable clue to the cause of the situation.

[全国甲2024]The Saint Lukas train doesn’t accept passengers—it accepts only the sick. The Saint Lukas is one of five government-sponsored medical trains that travel to remote towns in central and eastern Russia. Each stop lasts an average of two days, and during that time the doctors and nurses on board provide rural (乡村的) populations with basic medical care, X-ray scans and prescriptions.
“People started queuing to make an appointment early in the morning,” says Emile Ducke, a German photographer who traveled with the staff of the Saint Lukas for a two-week trip in November through the vast regions (区域) of Krasnoyarsk and Khakassia.

Russia’s public health care service has been in serious need of modernization. The government has struggled to come up with measures to address the problem, particularly in the poorer, rural areas east of the Volga River, including arranging doctor’s appointments by video chat and expanding financial aid programs to motivate doctors to practice medicine in remote parts of the country like Krasnoyarsk.
The annual arrival of the Saint Lukas is another attempt to improve the situation. For 10 months every year, the train stops at about eight stations over two weeks, before returning to the regional capital to refuel and restock (补给).Then it starts all over again the next month. Most stations wait about a year between visits.
Doctors see up to 150 patients every day. The train’s equipment allows for basic checkups.“I was very impressed by the doctors and their assistants working and living in such little space but still staying focused and very concerned,” says Ducke.“They were the best chance for many rural people to get the treatment they want.”

[山东省2024高二适应性联考]Medical artificial intelligence (AI) can perform with expert-level accuracy and deliver cost-effective health care. IBM’s Watson diagnoses heart disease better than doctors. Chatbots give better medical advice to patients in place of nurses. Smartphone apps can now detect skin cancer. Some forecast that medical AI will enter most hospitals and replace what quite a few doctors currently do. Yet, as recent research suggests, patients show a strong reluctance to medical AI—a big challenge the health care system will really face.
The reason is not the belief that AI provides inferior care. Nor is it that patients think that AI is more costly, less convenient, or less informative. Rather, it seems that AI does not take into account one’s specific characteristics and circumstances. People view themselves as unique. By contrast, they see AI medical care as standardised—well suited to treat an average patient but not enough to deal with unique individual circumstances. It is no wonder that medical AI providers are given a cold welcome.
刷阅读理解

There are a number of steps that care providers can take to overcome patients’ resistance to medical AI.For example, they can remove the concerns about being treated as an average patient by giving their recommendations specifically and uniquely. If so, patients in doubt would be as likely to follow the treatment recommendations of the AI provider as they would be to follow those of a human physician (医生).In addition, health care providers could also deliver individualised health care by explaining how the algorithms (算法) work and sharing patients’ reviews of the service with the media. Having a physician confirm the recommendation of an AI provider should make people more receptive to AI-based care. People are comfortable using medical AI if a physician remains in charge of the final decision.
AI-based health care technologies are being developed and employed at an impressive rate, providing better medical services for the patients. But utilising the full potential of them will require that we first overcome patients’ scepticism.

[全国新课标Ⅰ2024]“I am not crazy,” says Dr. William Farber, shortly after performing acupuncture (针灸) on a rabbit.“I am ahead of my time.” If he seems a little defensive, it might be because even some of his coworkers occasionally laugh at his unusual methods. But Farber is certain he’ll have the last laugh. He’s one of a small but growing number of American veterinarians (兽医) now practicing “holistic” medicine—combining traditional Western treatments with acupuncture, chiropractic (按摩疗法) and herbal medicine.
Farber, a graduate of Colorado State University, started out as a more conventional veterinarian. He became interested in alternative treatments 20 years ago when he suffered from terrible back pain. He tried muscle-relaxing drugs but found little relief. Then he tried acupuncture, an ancient Chinese practice, and was amazed that he improved after two or three treatments. What worked on a veterinarian seemed likely to work on his patients. So, after studying the techniques for a couple of years, he began offering them to pets.

Leigh Tindale’s dog Charlie had a serious heart condition. After Charlie had a heart attack, Tindale says, she was prepared to put him to sleep, but Farber’s treatments eased her dog’s suffering so much that she was able to keep him alive for an additional five months. And Priscilla Dewing reports that her horse, Nappy, “moves more easily and rides more comfortably” after a chiropractic adjustment.
Farber is certain that the holistic approach will grow more popular with time, and if the past is any indication, he may be right: Since 1982, membership in the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association has grown from 30 to over 700.“Sometimes it surprises me that it works so well,” he says.“I will do anything to help an animal. That’s my job.”

[湖南长沙一中2025高二开学考]Certain stem cells have a unique ability to move between growth compartments (隔间) in hair follicles (毛囊), but get stuck as people age and so lose their ability to mature and maintain hair colour, a new study shows.
Led by researchers from NYU Grossman School of Medicine, the new work focused on cells in the skin of mice and also found in humans called melanocyte stem cells, or McSCs. Hair colour is controlled by whether non-functional but continually multiplying pools of McSCs within hair follicles get the signal to become mature cells that make the pigment (色素) protein responsible for colour.
The new study showed that McSCs are remarkably plastic. This means that during normal hair growth, such cells continually move back and forth between maturity and immaturity as they move between compartments of the developing hair follicle. It is inside these compartments that McSCs are exposed to different levels of maturity-influencing protein signals.

The researchers found that as hair ages, falls out, and then repeatedly grows back, increasing numbers of McSCs get stuck in the stem cell compartment. They remain there, do not mature into the transit-amplifying state, and do not travel back to their original location in the germ compartment, where they regenerate into pigment cells.
Specifically, the research team found that McSCs transform between their most primitive stem cell state and the next stage of their maturation, depending on their location.
“Our study adds to our basic understanding of how McSCs work to colour hair,”said study lead investigator Qi Sun, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow at NYU Langone Health.“The new-found mechanisms raise the possibility that the same fixed positioning of McSCs may exist in humans. If so, that presents a potential pathway for reversing or preventing the greying of human hair by helping jammed cells to move again between developing hair follicle compartments.”

[江苏靖江高级中学2024高二月考]The temptation (诱惑) of sales advertisements: Blue-light-blocking glasses are supposed to protect eyes from the effects of short-wavelength light emitted from our smartphones, computer screens and LED lights. Given how much time we spend on our devices, this sounds like a smart investment, right? After all, eye strain (眼疲劳) is a real issue and can lead to poor sleep and even eye diseases. The glasses can cost $15 all the way up to several hundred dollars. But do they work?
Elizabeth Esparaz, an ophthalmologist (眼科医生) based in Cleveland, Ohio, says the science that manufacturers share as they promote these glasses can be confusing. For starters, blue light is not just about tech devices, and it’s not always bad.“The sun emits a much higher intensity of blue light than human-made devices, which helps our mood, alertness and sleep-wake cycle,” says Dr Esparaz.

The problem is blue light at night: It contains the release of melatonin (褪黑素).“Melatonin helps regulate our circadian rhythms (昼夜节律) and makes us sleepy,” says Dr Esparaz.
So, in theory, wearing blue-light-blocking glasses should help people who watch movies in bed or read from a tablet at night avoid sleeplessness. A review study from the University of Oklahoma that looked at 24 previous studies found that people affected by sleep disorders, jet lag and shift work fell asleep faster after using these glasses.
As for eye strain, a 2021 Australian study showed that those wearing the glasses did not experience less eye strain than those using clear glasses. And a 2018 review study, also by Australian researchers, found insufficient evidence that blue-light-blocking glasses prevent certain eye diseases.

To help with eye strain, Dr Esparaz suggests taking breaks and using lubricating (润滑的) eye drops.

[湖北鄂东南联盟2025高二期中]More and more researchers are using artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor biodiversity and assist endangered species. Different from conventional methods that can damage ecosystems or require considerable time, labour and resources, AI has the potential to quickly and effectively analyse vast quantities of real-world data.
Ecologist JÖrg Müller at the University of Würzburg, Germany, and his colleagues have shown that AI tools can help to quantify biodiversity in tropical (热带的) forests by identifying animal species from audio (音频的) recordings.“Our results demonstrate that AI is ready for more comprehensive species identification,” says Müller.“All that is needed now is more training data collected by humans.”

AI is imperfect, but it could speed up important discoveries, says Nicolas Miailhe, co-founder of The Future Society (TFS), an international non-profit organisation that aims to better govern AI.“We badly need human specialists to design models, as well as collect, label, check and interpret data,” he says.
Researchers at Conservation AI, a UK-based non-profit organisation in Liverpool that uses AI technology for various ecology projects, have developed models that can search through footage and images from drones (无人机) or camera traps to identify wildlife and track animal movements. So far, Conservation AI has processed more than 12.5 million images and detected more than 4 million individual animal appearances across 68 species.“The platform can process tens of thousands of images an hour, in contrast to humans who can do a few thousand at best,” says Paul Fergus, one of Conservation AI’s lead researchers.“The speed at which AI processes data could allow conservationists to protect endangered species from sudden threats,” he adds.

Miailhe is hopeful that AI can be routinely applied to real-world conservation efforts in the near future.“That’s clearly the way to go,” he says. [安徽部分地区2024期中联考]阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Valerie studies at a big university. At the same time, she maintains a full-time job so that she can pay for her tuition and her living expenses. So Valerie spends most of the day at the office, then goes to class three days a week. She also stays up late at night to study for her classes.
Valerie does not do any physical exercise. Between work and university, she is so busy that she thinks she does not have time for any physical activity.
Sadly, she rarely eats home-made meals. She usually just grabs a bag of chips or a hamburger as she leaves her office to take the bus to university. Since she is convinced that she does not have time to make a healthy dinner when she gets home, she eats lots of pizzas that she orders over the phone.

To make matters even worse, Valerie keeps getting sick. This makes her miss work and classes. She is miserable! She just wants to feel good. Her grades start to go down because of her illnesses. As she thinks about her whole life situation, she gets so frustrated that she does not even want to study anymore.
During her mid-year break, Valerie decides to make some big changes. First, she learns how to make some easy, healthy meals. She actually finds that she saves a lot of money by preparing her food herself, and the food tastes much better too! After an early dinner and some quiet reading, Valerie goes to bed early every night. Now she really feels refreshed in the morning.
