Hours later, I completed my first short story. Since then, I’ve written many stories, short and long. But also, since then, I’ve read more and noticed just how well people my age could write. Since then, I also felt less and less willing to share my work: what if my writing isn’t as good as everybody else’s? What started off as something creative that I could share with friends turned into competition changed by feelings of incompetence. Oftentimes, hobbies begin as something just for fun. But eventually, what was once fun now contributes to feelings of stress and inadequacy. I have plenty of memories of thinking I was going to pick up something new and stick with it, whether it be playing the piano, or drawing. But there is always a part of me that expects myself to just magically be good at all of those things. And when I’m not, the enjoyment tapers off as, slowly, I think mediocrity (平庸) isn’t acceptable anymore. Writing is the only hobby that I have repeatedly come back to despite dropping it constantly. I can see the growth in my writing all these years, but the expectations to be better and better is never satisfied. This is why I drop writing for months at a time. This feeling of a hobby becoming, for a lack of better word, a chore, lowers the satisfaction of said hobby. But hobbies are there to give you a breath of fresh air from having to excel at everything, from academics to your occupation. We must accept that it is okay to just suck at an activity but still doing it because it brings you joy. There is a balance between joy and expectations, either set by others or by ourselves. 24. What does the author do in the first paragraph? A. He challenges a tradition. B. He relates an experience. C. He envisions a coming trend. D. He compares varied hobbies. 25. Which can best replace the underlined phrase “tapers off” in paragraph 2? A. Thins out. B. Tops out. C. Builds up. D. Spreads around. 26. Why does the author drop writing constantly? A. He is inadequate for it. B. He prefers mediocrity. C. He equals joy to achievement. D. He receives bitter comment. 27. What message does the passage convey? A. Mediocrity is the key to enjoyment. B. A hobby shared is a hobby squared. C. Excellence ensures academic success. D. Enjoyment outweighs excellence in hobbies. C The Caspian Sea, the world’s largest inland water body, is declining, according to a new study published in Communications Earth & Environment. The study reports the water sources that typically feed the sea are contributing less and less water. So much so that these sources cannot keep up with evaporation (蒸发). If global temperatures rise by 2°C, the sea's water levels could drop by 16-32 feet, which means 4 out of 10 ecosystem types unique to the Caspian Sea would disappear completely. The Caspian Sea is home to a variety of life. Six sturgeon (鲟鱼) species live within the sea. In the Caspian Sea, sturgeon typically reside in shallower waters during the summer and fall and lay eggs in the rivers that flow into the sea. A drop in water levels would prevent them from accessing these grounds, which could lead to population decline. The sea is also a hot spot for some seabirds. They usually take shelter in the coastal wetlands, but it’s possible those could dry up as well. The Caspian Sea touches five countries—Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan—and a drop in water levels could seriously impact trade routes vital to the economies of these countries, as low water levels could prevent ships from docking (入港). Besides, the exposed dry seabed is likely to release dust containing industrial pollutants and salt, posing serious threats to human health. A dropping water level could also alter the climate of the region, thus impacting the area’s agriculture. But all hope is not lost. “Some Caspian Sea level decline appears unavoidable,” Simon Goodman from the University of Leeds said in a press release. “However, with the anticipated effects unfolding over a few decades, it should be possible to find ways to protect biodiversity while safeguarding human interests and wellbeing. That might sound like a long timescale, but, given the immense political, legal and practical challenges involved, it is advisable to start action as soon as possible to give the best chance of success.” 28. What is a fundamental driver for the Caspian Sea’s water crisis? A. Reduced inflow of feeder rivers. B. Industrial pollution of coastal plants. C. Increased evaporation of the Caspian Sea. D. Sudden disappearance of the ecosystems. 29. Why are sturgeon populations threatened by the decline of water levels? A. Seabirds compete for their food. B. They lose access to coastal wetlands. C. They can’t reach rivers to reproduce. D. The shallower summer habitats dry up. 30. What could be a likely consequence of the drying process? A. Establishment of trade routes. B. Release of seabed pollutants. C. Expansion of local agriculture. D. Alteration of regional integration. 31. What does Simon Goodman’s suggest to address the problem? A. Local community relocation. B. Resignation to biodiversity loss. C. Emphasis on economic interests. D. Urgent cross-border cooperation. D It’s a problem that has annoyed many horror movie makeup artists: How do you give someone the appearance of having a second head? Seemingly to fake out hunters, many butterflies have found their own solutions to this problem, with complicated patterns and structures on their wings that create what look like second heads on their backsides. Now, in a new study, researchers at the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) dive deeper into the origins of these “false heads”. Previous studies have shown these false heads help confuse hunters: Damage to the back end of a butterfly’s wings near the false head has less impact on vital behaviors such as flying and mating than damage to the butterfly’s real head. Scientists had long theorized that butterflies’ false heads arose because five key traits (特征)—namely false feelers, noticeable coloration, wing patterns that contain special lines, large spots, and headlike shapes—evolve (进化) together to redirect predator attention. But no one had traced the evolutionary history of these traits. Evolutionary ecologists at IISER began by analyzing images of nearly 1000 species of butterflies and marking how many of the false head traits each species exhibited. The researchers then constructed a phylogenetic tree (系统树), which allowed them to visualize how closely related false-headed species were to one another, as well as how each of the traits evolved over time. Computational modeling of this tree revealed that four of the five false head traits all evolved in a correlated manner, while also showing the order in which the traits first appeared within butterflies. The researchers propose that the separate traits integrated into a single, complex false head trait because of a common selective force: attacks from hunters. However, questions remain on the exact advantages that these distinctive defense mechanisms provide to the butterflies that use them. 32. Why is “makeup artist” mentioned in the first paragraph? A. To support a scientific theory. B. To illustrate a filming technique. C. To introduce an evolutionary trick. D. To justify a long-held assumption. 33. What might previous studies focus on? A. The development of the five traits. B. The special behaviors of butterflies. C. The defensive function of false heads. D. The evolution theories of butterflies. 34. What did IISER scientists do in the new study? A. They classified wing patterns of butterflies. B. They reconstructed history of trait evolution. C. They innovated methods of studying butterflies. D. They analyzed the survival benefits of false heads. 35. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. To Survive? Fake a Second Head! B. Confused? Phylogenetic Tree Helps! C. Do Key Traits Enhance Insects’ Survival? D. Does Evolution Reshape Butterflies’ Bodies? 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Nowadays, meaningfully connecting with new people is no mean achievement. From the decline of the office to the rise of single-occupancy flats, our social lives are being taken away from us. 36 Their ads promote the safety and convenience of staying home and not seeing or talking to another human. It wasn’t always like this. 37 You’ll see cafes and nightclubs and buses and trains filled with life and conversation. People talk to one another. Loudly and proudly, they just talk. 38 So, I tried it out on everyone I met, from neighbors and shopkeepers to hospitality workers and groups of strangers in cafes and pubs. 39 I remember being attracted into one of Gail’s bakeries by the background music they played. I walked over to the baker. I pointed upwards. “Are you guys responsible for this playlist?” A nod. “Ah, great, love it!” He smiles thinly and nods a polite “goodbye”, which everyone knows means: “GO AWAY IMMEDIATELY, PLEASE.” Yet persistence paid off when the ice was finally broken by Graham, a fellow resident of my little neighborhood. We got chatting one day while he was smoking on his doorstep. I mentioned being a writer, and he paused, taking a long drag on his cigarette, and said, “Words are to the mind what exercise is to the body.” That profound insight immediately opened a channel between us. 40 Those encounters, born from a conscious effort to connect, have gradually woven warmth and familiarity into the fabric of my daily life. A. Look at photos of city life in the 90s or 00s. B. My first interaction experiment didn’t go so well. C. Online platforms offer new ways to bond more closely. D. What better way to make social connections than this? E. My first attempt with the baker worked out as planned. F. Then, conversations with strangers become a regular occurrence. G. Meanwhile, streaming services and food-delivery apps discourage us from going out. 41.A. shy away from B. miss out on C. size up D. take on 42.A. rules B. plans C. answers D. prizes 43.A. character B. object C. concept D. idea 44.A. research B. delete C. submit D. polish 45.A. win B. care C. hesitate D. participate 46. I decided to 41 the challenge, too. The 42 were simple: Register for the writing contest, pay the entry fee, and at midnight, I’d receive three unique prompts (提示词) — a genre, a(n) 43 (mine was a sleeping bag), and an action. I had 24 hours to integrate those into a 250-word story and 44 it online. I didn’t 45 . Actually, I was out after the first round, but I gained something 46 : the fun of writing. The prompts pushed me outside my usual subject matter, forcing me to 47 and let loose. With such a 48 , I didn't have time to overthink — I just wrote. Writing contests offer 49 beyond the possibility of winning. They help writers rediscover 50 , or grow. Charlie Rogers was desperate to 51 his writing chops (写作技能) when he entered a contest six years ago. The New York writer hit a long dry spell that left him feeling like his inspiration had 52 him. But the contest saved him. For Brittany Neeley, contests push her to make quick, thoughtful decisions about plot, pacing, and character, and that’s helped her become more 53 in her work overall. “I stop writing 54 and start crafting stories with clear purpose.” Neeley says. Framing contests as a way to improve yourself, 55 something that must be won to be worthwhile, can help you achieve the best rewards. 第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。 Spotlight on Chinese C40 Cities: Wuhan’s Sustainable Development C40, a global network of cities committed to tackling climate breakdown, 56 (include) 13 members from China. Having swallowed a big mouthful of chicken, I took a deep breath and began, “Could I invite some friends over tomorrow? Just for the afternoon?” My parents exchanged a glance, then nodded readily. But beside me, my younger sister, Lily, froze. Her wide eyes locked onto mine. “But... what about Miracle? She’ll be terrified, Ethan.” Miracle was a cat Lily rescued on a rainy day last winter. True to her name, the cat had survived. Yet, it remained a creature of profound shyness: Loud voices sent her trembling under beds; sudden movements made her jump. She wasn’t just a pet; she was a fragile soul Lily fiercely protected. “I promise, Lily,” I insisted, leaning forward, meeting her worried gaze (凝视). “We’ll stay in the living room. No loud music, no shouting games. I’ll keep the back door shut tight, and I’ll warn everyone to be quiet. Miracle won’t even know they’re here. ” I saw the conflict in her eyes — her desire to be supportive warring with her deep concern for the poor cat. After a tense silence, she finally gave a small, reluctant nod. Saturday arrived with sunshine and laughter as my friends piled in. True to my word, I guided them straight to the living room, reminding them firmly about Miracle’s sensitivity. Initially, we chatted, played cards quietly. Glancing around, I spotted Miracle sliding silently down the hallway towards Lily’s room. Good, she’s keeping her distance, I thought, relieved. As the afternoon wore on, however, the initial caution disappeared. A competitive board game led to enthusiastic cheers and laughter. Lost in the sheer fun of being with my friends, I forgot everything--the promise, the fragile creature. After friends departed with cheerful goodbyes, I began tidying empty glasses, still lost in the happy scenes when Lily burst through the front door into her room. Then came her scream, “Ethan. Miracle is gone.” 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答. Para.1 A cold wave of fear rushed through me.   Para. 2 Luckily, we finally found Miracle in the backyard. B I remember opening my iPad one day in fifth grade after a silly conversation with my cousin about scary story ideas.Hours later,I completed my first short story.Since then,I've written many stories, short and long. But also, since then,I've read more and noticed just how well people my age could write.Since then,I also felt less and less willing to share my work: what if my writing isn't as good as everybody else's?What started off as something creative that I could share with friends turned into competition changed by feelings of incompetence. Oftentimes, hobbies begin as something just for fun.But eventually, what was once fun now contributes to feelings of stress and inadequacy.I have plenty of memories of thinking I was going to pick up something new and stick with it,whether it be playing the piano,or 英语试卷第4页共12页 drawing. But there is always a part of me that expects myself to just magically be good at all of those things. And when I'm not,the enjoyment tapers off as,slowly,I think mediocrity ( isn't acceptable anymore. Writing is the only hobby that I have repeatedly come back to despite dropping it constantly.I can see the growth in my writing all these years, but the expectations to be better and better is never satisfied. This is why I drop writing for months at a time. This feeling of a hobby becoming, for a lack of better word,a chore, lowers the satisfaction of said hobby. But hobbies are there to give you a breath of fresh air from having to excel at everything, from academics to your occupation. We must accept that it is okay to just suck at an activity but still doing it because it brings you joy. There is a balance between joy and expectations, either set by others or by ourselves. 24.What does the author do in the first paragraph? C The Caspian Sea,the world's largest inland water body,is declining, according to a new study published in Communications Earth Environment. The study reports the water sources that typically feed the sea are contributing less and less water. So much so that these sources cannot keep up with evaporation ()If global temperatures rise by 2C,the sea's water levels could drop by 16-32 feet, which means 4 out of 10 ecosystem types unique to the Caspian Sea would disappear completely. The Caspian Sea is home to a variety of life.Six sturgeon (species live within the sea. In the Caspian Sea,sturgeon typically reside in shallower waters during the summer and fall and lay eggs in the rivers that flow into the sea.A drop in water levels would prevent them from accessing these grounds, which could lead to population decline. The sea is also a hot 英语试卷第5页共12页 spot for some seabirds. They usually take shelter in the coastal wetlands, but it's possible those could dry up as well. The Caspian Sea touches five countries-Azerbaijan,Iran,Kazakhstan,Russia,and Turkmenistan-and a drop in water levels could seriously impact trade routes vital to the economies of these countries,as low water levels could prevent ships from docking () Besides, the exposed dry seabed is likely to release dust containing industrial pollutants and salt, posing serious threats to human health.A dropping water level could also alter the climate of the region, thus impacting the area's agriculture. But all hope is not lost."Some Caspian Sea level decline appears unavoidable,"Simon Goodman from the University of Leeds said in a press release."However, with the anticipated effects unfolding over a few decades,it should be possible to find ways to protect biodiversity while safeguarding human interests and wellbeing. That might sound like a long timescale, but, given the immense political, legal and practical challenges involved,it is advisable to start action as soon as possible to give the best chance of success." 28.What is a fundamental driver for the Caspian Sea's water crisis? A.Reduced inflow of feeder rivers. B.Industrial pollution of coastal plants. C.Increased evaporation of the Caspian Sea. D.Sudden disappearance of the ecosystems. 29.Why are sturgeon populations threatened by the decline of water levels? A.Seabirds compete for their food. B.They lose access to coastal wetlands. C.They can't reach rivers to reproduce. D.The shallower summer habitats dry up. 30.What could be a likely consequence of the drying process? A.Establishment of trade routes. B.Release of seabed pollutants. C.Expansion of local agriculture. D.Alteration of regional integration. 31.What does Simon Goodman's suggest to address the problem? A.Local community relocation. B.Resignation to biodiversity loss. C.Emphasis on economic interests. D.Urgent cross-border cooperation. D It's a problem that has annoyed many horror movie makeup artists:How do you give someone the appearance of having a second head?Seemingly to fake out hunters, many butterflies have found their own solutions to this problem, with complicated patterns and structures on their wings that create what look like second heads on their backsides. Now,in a new study, researchers at the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) 英语试卷第6页共12页 dive deeper into the origins of these "false heads". Previous studies have shown these false heads help confuse hunters:Damage to the back end of a butterfly's wings near the false head has less impact on vital behaviors such as flying and mating than damage to the butterfly's real head.Scientists had long theorized that butterflies'false heads arose because five key traits ()-namely false feelers, noticeable coloration, wing patterns that contain special lines, large spots, and headlike shapes-evolve (together to redirect predator attention. But no one had traced the evolutionary history of these traits. Evolutionary ecologists at IISER began by analyzing images of nearly 1000 species of butterflies and marking how many of the false head traits each species exhibited. The researchers then constructed a phylogenetic tree(系a统树),which allowed them to visualize how closely related false-headed species were to one another,as well as how each of the traits evolved over time.Computational modeling of this tree revealed that four of the five false head traits all evolved in a correlated manner, while also showing the order in which the traits first appeared within butterflies. The researchers propose that the separate traits integrated into a single, complex false head trait because of a common selective force:attacks from hunters. However, questions remain on the exact advantages that these distinctive defense mechanisms provide to the butterflies that use them. 32.Why is"makeup artist"mentioned in the first paragraph? A.To support a scientific theory. B.To illustrate a filming technique. C.To introduce an evolutionary trick. D.To justify a long-held assumption. 33.What might previous studies focus on? A.The development of the five traits. B.The special behaviors of butterflies. C.The defensive function of false heads. D.The evolution theories of butterflies. 34.What did IISER scientists do in the new study? A.They classified wing patterns of butterflies. B.They reconstructed history of trait evolution. C.They innovated methods of studying butterflies. D.They analyzed the survival benefits of false heads. 35.What can be a suitable title for the text? A.To Survive?Fake a Second Head! B.Confused?Phylogenetic Tree Helps! C.Do Key Traits Enhance Insects'Survival? D.Does Evolution Reshape Butterflies'Bodies? 英语试卷第7页共12页 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项 为多余选项。 Nowadays, meaningfully connecting with new people is no mean achievement. From the decline of the office to the rise of single-occupancy flats, our social lives are being taken away from us.36Their ads promote the safety and convenience of staying home and not seeing or talking to another human. It wasn't always like this.37 You'll see cafes and nightclubs and buses and trains filled with life and conversation.People talk to one another.Loudly and proudly, they just talk.38 So,I tried it out on everyone I met, from neighbors and shopkeepers to hospitality workers and groups of strangers in cafes and pubs. _39 I remember being attracted into one of Gail's bakeries by the background music they played.I walked over to the baker.I pointed upwards."Are you guys responsible for this playlist??”Anod.“Ah,great, love it!"He smiles thinly and nods a polite“goodbye”, which everyone knows means:"GO AWAY IMMEDIATELY,PLEASE." Yet persistence paid off when the ice was finally broken by Graham,a fellow resident of my little neighborhood. We got chatting one day while he was smoking on his doorstep.I mentioned being a writer, and he paused, taking a long drag on his cigarette, and said,"Words are to the mind what exercise is to the body."That profound insight immediately opened a channel between us.40 Those encounters, born from a conscious effort to connect, have gradually woven warmth and familiarity into the fabric of my daily life. After careful thought, I pick “Travel Around Britain.” I’ve always wanted to practise real-life English while exploring both famous sights and hidden villages. The course could teach us how to plan routes, read British timetables and even order afternoon tea like locals. Short films from each region would make the lessons vivid, and group projects could design dream itineraries for classmates. I believe this blend of language and culture will be both fun and practical. Yours sincerely, Li Hua 第二节 A cold wave of fear rushed through me. I remembered opening the backdoor for some air. Miracle must have got scared out of the house then. My sister looked at me in disbelief. Tears welled in her eyes, spilling over. "You promised!" The words weren't shouted, but they cut deep. Shame burned my face. Without a word, I grabbed a flashlight and raced into the backyard, Lily closely behind, her calls for Miracle now desperate and choked with tears. We searched like crazy. Luckily, we found Miracle in the backyard. There hidden under the thick bushes was Miracle. I dropped to my knees and scooped it up gently and placed it into Lily’s waiting hands. Once we went back home, I apologized sincerely, "I am so, so sorry." I slowly reached out towards Lily, placing my hand gently over hers. "Can you forgive me?" Lily looked down at Miracle, then back at me, her eyes still wet but softening slightly. By the way, I noticed you’re reading the latest magazine. Would you mind if I ask where you found it? M: Oh, in the magazine section on the third floor. They have a great collection. W: Perfect! I also need to photocopy some pages for research. Are the machines on this floor? M: They’re on the first floor, near the front desk. Just pay for prints there. W: Great, thanks so much! Text 8 W: Hey, Vincent, thanks for coming in. I know you’re busy with the science fair project now, but I want to briefly discuss last week’s language exam with you. M: Thank you, Ms. Brown. I appreciate you taking the time. W: Well, I noticed the essay question was a bit challenging for you. You had good ideas, but the structure was a bit messy. M: Yeah, I know. I ran out of time and couldn’t organize my thoughts well. W: I understand. Time management can be tricky. For future exams, try to outline your essay first. It’ll help you stay on track. M: That makes sense. I’ll give it a shot. W: Also, watch out for small spelling errors. Double-check your work if you have time left. M: Got it. I’ll scan for errors at the end next time. Text 9 W: Welcome back to Youth Impact Today! Our guest is 16-year-old Alex — a high school student whose food-waste project is changing communities. Alex, thanks for joining us! M: Super excited to be here! W: Let’s start at the beginning. How’d you get into content creation? M: I started my channel at 13 just for fun — posting basketball tricks, friends…whatever happened in my life. W: Then you shifted your content focus, right? M: Yes. Last year I volunteered at our city’s food bank. Seeing shelves half-empty while restaurants threw perfect food surprised me. That night I posted a video asking: “Why can’t we bridge this gap?” W: Did restaurants respond immediately? M: Not at first! My first 10 calls got no reply. Finally, Joe’s Pizza said “yes”. So, we tried it: They saved 20 meals daily. That got others on board. W: What’s your biggest “win” so far? M: Ms. Rivera, a single mom from my bus stop, hugged me crying when she got fresh salads instead of canned beans for once. That’s when I knew: This isn’t just about “waste”. W: Alex, you’re proof that impact has no age limit. Thank you! Text 10 John Robert Horner was born on June 15th, 1946 in Montana. He had a rough childhood. As a young boy, John was shy, not wanting to hang out with people his age. John commented that school was hard because reading and writing were extremely slow for him. In 1965, John left the University of Montana and was drafted into the army. He served for about 3 years before he returned and tried school again. However, he dropped out in 1972. John didn’t give up on his dream job. He applied to many museums for any job that was willing to hire him. He accepted a position at Princeton University’s Natural History Museum as a technician. After the museum noticed his expertise, he moved up to research assistant and eventually managed his own projects. It was during the mid-1970s that John, and a colleague, discovered the first concrete evidence that dinosaurs cared for their young. John currently works at Chapman University as a presidential fellow. 1 ABC 6 A▣BII 11 A▣BJ 1 ABC CA]LB[C A BLC 2 ■0 G 17 AB 组 3 A BC A CB 四 13 四 18 CAC 切 789 A CB] 四 4 CAI B G A] B C 5 ■▣B]四 10 ACB 15 A00 G 2 CABC 第二部分:阅读 21刀0四 6 AB 31 AJB DJ 36 0BDID]▣E刀G 22 0B可 D D B国 I D D G LD 7 和8I四▣刀G 23 I CD 2 A CB3 CC] I ■G用 LD 38 08DG9DgEDFaG 24 1▣ g D B D 3 D 9 A知8DMD四n口G 250m0J LD 30 D B□ A 80 40 如BDMD四▣IG1 第三部分:语言运用(第一节) 10田9四 46 A 5 A▣I c阳D 2 ▣B D 7 A ] 5 A B1 D 43 A B 四 Dear Kathy, Thank you for creating a new elective. A cold wave of fear rushed through me.
