PUA stands for “Pick-up Artist.” It started as a term for people who use clever ways to influence their interactions (交流) with others, especially between lovers. This idea has grown, and now it also means people use tricks to control others in the workplace and online. It’s very helpful to know about PUA because it can deeply influence how you feel about your development. Here are some common behaviors to be careful.
Sometimes people who use PUA tricks (欺骗,哄骗) criticize a lot. They might tell you that you’re always doing things wrong. It is just a way to make you feel sorry about yourself rather than help you improve. They may also try to keep you away from your friends and family. This makes you depend on them, and gives them more control over you. Another trick is called gas-lighting (煤气灯效应). For example, you remember something clearly, but they keep saying it didn’t happen. They want you to doubt (怀疑) what you know is true.
To avoid PUA behaviors, there are several steps you can take. First, learn to tell what healthy friendships and relationships look like. Being confident is also important because it will not be so easy for others to trick you. Besides, you should be brave to say no when something feels wrong. What’s more, talking to someone you trust like a teacher can be very useful.
Knowing these signs and how to deal with them can help you have better relationships. It’s like building a strong foundation (基础) for happy and healthy relationships as you get older.

A. PUA only happens between lovers.
B. People may use PUA to control others in workplace and online.

On October 5, 2022, the World Teachers’ Day, UNESCO said that not having enough teachers is a big problem all over the world.
UNESCO found that there is a need for about 24.4 million more teachers for primary school students and 44.4 million more for middle school students by 2030 across the world.
UNESCO found two big reasons behind this worldwide teacher shortage (短缺). First, some teachers have to face bad working conditions. Second, they don’t get paid enough.
Many students are crowded together in one classroom, and teachers there have much more work than they can take. In rural (偏远的) areas, women teachers don’t have housing and have to take long, unsafe trips to school each day.
UNESCO also found that in 6 out of 10 countries, primary school teachers get paid less than other jobs with the same work. To deal with the problem, UNESCO gives some ideas to make teaching more attractive (有吸引力的). Good pay is very important. Easier paperwork for teachers also helps. That way, teachers can teach more while worrying less about other things.

【答案】例文
Dear Tony,
I am sorry to hear that you are feeling under great pressure these days. I think stress is like a coin: It can push us to work harder, but too much may harm us. Last month, I faced stress before a big exam. I felt nervous, so I took deep breaths and made a study plan. Finally, I did better than expected!
Here’s my advice. First, exercise helps. Try running or playing football to relax. Second, talk to someone you trust. Sharing problems makes them smaller. Hope you feel better soon!
Yours,
Li Ming

4. What is TRUE about PUA behavior (行为)?
A. PUA only happens between lovers.
B. People may use PUA to control others in workplace and online.
C. PUA can help you have better relationships when you get older.
5. What does the underlined word “criticize” mean in paragraph 2?
A. 批判,批评,指责 B. 缺陷 C. 出彩
6. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Steps to use PUA to control others.
B. Reasons for why students can’t use PUA.
C. Advice on how to avoid PUA behaviors.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A Say “NO” to PUA! B. Let’s PUA Together! C. Is it Good to PUA?
C

阅读下面的短文,根据短文内容回答问题和翻译文中画线句子。

37. How many big reasons are there behind the problem?
