Huang Xuhua, a famous Chinese submarine (潜艇) designer, is known for his hard work, creativity and love for his country. His journey from a young boy in a small village to a top scientist in China is truly inspiring.
Huang Xuhua was born in a small village in Guangdong Province. When he was very young, China was going through many changes. Huang was always curious about the ocean and how things worked. He loved reading books and trying small experiments. Huang was especially good at math and physics. The two subjects helped him build a strong foundation for his future career. When he grew older, he wanted to learn medicine at first under the influence of his parents who were both doctors in his hometown. However, to save China, Huang got into one of China's best universities to study Naval Architecture. His university life was not easy, but Huang never gave up. He graduated with excellent grades in the end.
After graduation, Huang joined a research institute (机构) and focused on submarine design. There he faced many challenges, but he always kept strong-willed and put his shoulder to the wheel with other workmates. His efforts paid off in the end. China’s first nuclear-powered submarine was independently developed and built without any help of other countries. This project was not only a big step in technology but also the key to guarding China’s safety. Huang and his team worked day and night, even when things seemed impossible. His dream and love for our country kept him going on.
Huang’s work has earned him many awards, including the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award, one of China’s highest honors. Although Huang achieved success, he remains humble (谦虚的). He often tells young people to stay curious, work hard, and never give up.
Huang Xuhua’s story shows us how dreams and resolutions can lead to great achievements. He really sets a good example for all young people.

Sirish Subash, a 14-year-old student from the US, recently won the 3M Young Scientist Challenge.
He made a tool that can find pesticides (杀虫剂) on fruit and vegetables. This won him $25,000 (about 180,000 yuan) and the title (称号) of “Best Young Scientist in America”.
Subash’s idea for the tool came from a simple but important question. His mother always told him to wash fruit before eating it. The boy wondered if the action did any good. He learned that 70 percent of fruit and vegetables have pesticides. They can bring possible health problems like cancer (癌症). Washing only gets away part of the pesticides. “If we could find them, we could avoid eating them and lower the risk of those health problems,” Subash said.
This led Subash to invent PestiSCAND.It is a small tool that people can take with them. It works by shining lights and seeing how light reflects off food. With the help of a sensor (传感器), a screen and an AI learning model, the tool can find out if there are pesticides around.
To use it, users must point PestiSCAND at the fruit or vegetable to see if they need to wash it again. They can check the results in an app on their phones. During testing, PestiSCAND was right more than 85 percent of the time in finding pesticides. Subash plans to improve his tool and hopes to get it to market by the time he starts college.
21.What is PestiSCAND mainly used for?
A.Analyzing the sweet of food. B.Washing fruit and vegetables.
C.Finding out pesticides on food. D.Growing plants without pesticides.

c. He learned that lots of fruit have pesticides.
d. His mother told him to wash fruit before eating.
A.d-c-a-b B.d-a-c-b C.a-c-b-d D.c-a-b-d
24.What can we infer from Subash’s story?
A.AI technology is easy to use.
B.Young people can also make great changes.
C.Solving everyday problems needs much money.
D.Washing fruit is completely useless for food safety.
25.What is Subash like?
A.Shy and normal. B.Smart and creative.

A teenager from Hunan makes an award-winning invention
14岁男孩发明智能装置,防止鸟类误食鼠药
Lai Yucheng, 14, from Changjun Furong Middle School in Changsha, Hunan, has achieved a great feat. He won a gold medal (奖牌) at the Paris International Exhibition of Inventions for his special project: an intelligent birds-protective and rodent control bait feeding device (智能防鸟误食灭鼠投饵生态监测装置).
Lai got the idea for his project after seeing a bird die from eating poison (毒药) meant for mice at his school. After looking it up online and reading news stories, he found that this was a common problem.
“I noticed that birds and mice are active at different times–birds during the day and mice at night,” said Lai. With this in mind, Lai made the device (装置) to be powered by photovoltaic energy (光伏能源). Photosensitive sensors (光敏传感器) control the doors, closing them during the day to protect birds and opening them at night for the mice. “This makes the device both good for the environment and use less energy,” said Lai.
Lai carefully put together and fixed his invention, trying many times to make it work perfectly. He used organic (有机的) glass to create the part for the bait as well as the door that opens and closes. On the top, he made a special space for all the electronic (电子的) parts. Lastly, he put the solar panel (太阳能电池板) on top to power the whole set, finishing his smart device.
Chen Shuizhang, Lai’s teacher, praised his hard work and problem-solving skills. “Lai is good at finding a problem in the real world and coming up with a cool solution. He keeps trying and fixing things until they work right, and he always plans things out carefully. That’s what made him stand out in this competition,” said Chen.

Great inventions are changing and improving our lives in many ways. A 3D printer, one of the great inventions, is like a magical machine. It can make objects into real things from computer designs. What is more amazing, two young scientists made a special 3D food printer in Qatar. It can use bits of vegetables to create food!
These smart students, Annan and Mansoori, are students at Carnegie Mellon University in Doha. To make the 3D carrot, they first used very small parts of a real carrot and made lots of them in a science lab. Then they used these tiny parts like ink (墨水) in their printer to make the carrot. By using vegetable cells (细胞) and ultraviolet (紫外线) (UV) , a new carrot is printed. UV light is a kind of energy that helps stick the carrot bits together. The invention may help with food safety.
They chose carrots in the test because scientists knew a lot about how carrot parts grew into plants. Mansoori said 3D-printed food can be made cheaply. It doesn’t require large areas of land. It also does not require maintenance (维护) costs. 3D-printed carrots are cheaper than real carrots.
Today, 733 million people are facing hunger. Mansoori hopes 3D printers will be used in restaurants, supermarkets, and hospitals. The purpose, she said, is to make food reachable to people all over the world.
66.What can the special 3D food printer do?
