UPS driver RYAN ARENS was making his rounds near a pond in Bozeman, Montana, when he heard an unearthly sound. “ Like a cry for help,” he told thedodo.com, a website for animal lovers. It was December 2018, and about 15 feet from the frozen banks was the source of that cry—a half-submerged brown-and-white wirehaired hound, struggling to cling to a thin layer of ice. How she got there no one knows, but an elderly man was already on the scene, determined to save her. He’d entered the pond in a rowboat and was hacking away at the ice with a rock to create a path to the dog. It was slow going, and Arens, 44, thought he stood a better chance.
“Animals are my weakness,” he told the Great Falls Tribune, explaining why he stripped down to his boxers and socks, even though the temperature was in the 30s, and commandeered the rowboat.
His heart thumping, Arens slid closer to the dog and used the other man’s rock to smash away at the ice. He gave one strong heave too many and slipped off the boat, crashing into 16 feet of freezing water.
He resurfaced in time to see the dog going under. Using nervous energy to keep warm, he swam about five feet toward her, grabbed hold of her collar, and pulled her to the ice. He then boosted the dog into the boat and slid it back to the shore, where anxious bystanders carried the dog to the home of the rowboat owner, a retired veterinarian. Once in the house himself, Arens jumped into a warm shower with the dog until they both defrosted. A few more minutes in the pond, the vet told Arens, and she would have likely suffered cardiac arrest.
The next day, Arens was back working the same neighborhood when the dog’s owner came over to thank him for saving Sadie. “ Would you like to meet her?” he asked.
He opened the door to his pickup, and Sadie bolted out. She made a beeline for Arens, leaping on him and bathing him in wet kisses. That special delivery, says Arens, “ was the high- light of my UPS career.”
24. How did the elderly man try to save the dog at first?
A. He swam to the dog directly.
B. He called Ryan Arens for help.
C. He used a stick to reach the dog.
D. He entered hacked at the ice with a rock.
25. What does the underlined word “commandeered” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. borrowed B. took control of C. repaired D. sold
26. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The dog’s owner lived far away from the pond.
B. Ryan Arens often saved animals in his daily life.
C. Sadie recognized and was grateful to Ryan Arens.
D. The temperature in Bozeman, Montana was very high then.
27. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. A retired veterinarian helped take care of a rescued dog.
B. A dog owner thanked a UPS driver for returning his lost dog.
C. An elderly man tried to save a dog in a frozen pond but failed.
D. A UPS driver risked his life to save a drowning dog in a frozen pond.

When planning my wedding, I was determined not to get caught up in the “perfect day” , but to have a relaxed, informal celebration. My husband and I ended up having a lovely time.
“Pursuit of perfection is a prison,” says Moya Sarner, an NHS psychotherapist. Many of us are driven by the unconscious wish that if we could just have the perfect body, the perfect job and the perfect family, then we would be happy. For that reason, it can be one of the most significant barriers to happiness in life.
The psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott wrote about the importance of the “good enough mother” who meets her baby’s needs timely, but is not perfect. He said perfect is harmful. To meet every desire immediately, to pass the toy straight away whenever it is demanded slows down a baby’s growth, robbing them of the opportunity to feel frustrated and learn to crawl to get the toy for themselves.
Winnicott believed that while perfection is not a virtue, tolerance of imperfection is. If we cannot develop the capacity to tolerate imperfection in ourselves and in those around us, we can have no self-confidence, no sustainable relationships and no fulfilling career. If we’re always trying to build something called a perfect life, we aren’t really living the one we’re in.
How do I know all this? I am a perfectionist in recovery. I’ve started to recognize my intolerance of imperfection -- my need for certain things to be exactly as I would like them to be, from the way my husband chops his onions to my terror of being late -- and it has made a huge difference to my relationship and my parenting. How can you be a good partner if you expect everyone else to fit your own narrow expectations? How can your child grow if they sense that they always need to color precisely inside the lines you’ve drawn out for them?
We need to go further than tolerating imperfections. We need to learn to appreciate their humanity and beauty. Imperfections are why people will pay a calligrapher to handwrite invitations when a computer can produce a flawless version of the same script for less money and in less time. So for a more delicious life, and ultimately a better one, I choose imperfectionism.
28. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By presenting a successful ceremony. B. By showing her firm determination.
C.By describing her personal experience. D. By introducing her perfect marriage.
29. What can we learn from the example of the “ good enough mother” ?
A. Raising a child brings a mother much joy.
B. Pursuing perfection is the duty of mothers.
C. Meeting babies’ demands is very challenging.
D. Responding instantly impacts babies’ growth.
30. What is the function of the two questions at the end of Paragraph 5?
A. To shift topics. B. To make assumptions.
C. To arouse interest. D. To encourage thinking.
31. Which of the following might the author approve of?
A. A miss is as good as a mile. B. Haste makes waste.

Environmental DNA (eDNA) has become a crucial tool in ecological research over recent years. By analyzing water, soil, or other environmental materials for DNA pieces, researchers can tell that thousands of different species have been in an area without having to observe the actual species passing through.
To date, this eDNA process has mostly been employed to detect marine (海洋的) creatures, insects, and other wildlife. However, according to a paper published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, this technique could just as easily be applied to spot humans.
An interational team of researchers based at the University of Florida, USA, demonstrated that human genomic (基因组的) information can be easily detected in eDNA samples collected from water, sand, and even the air. While this capability could have practical applications, such as aiding in the search for missing persons or monitoring public health, the researchers highlight significant moral concerns. These concerns include the lack of agreement from individuals for their DNA to be collected, potential breaches(侵犯) of privacy, and the risk of genetic information being used for commercial purposes.
This issue is particularly challenging for the field of eDNA, which relies on open and easily accessible data. “It is standard practice in science to make these data publicly available. However, this also means that if human information is not screened out, anyone could access this information,” says senior author Professor David Duffy, a wildlife disease genomics researcher at the University of Florida. “ This raises issues around permission. Do we need to ask permission to collect these samples? Should we bring in some controls to remove human genetic data?”
“ Whenever we make a technological advancement, there are both beneficial and concerning potential uses. This situation is no different,” Duffy explains. “ We are raising these issues early so that policymakers and society have adequate time to develop suitable guidelines.”
32. What is the primary use of eDNA in ecological research?
A. Identifying species present in an area. B. Monitoring species evolution processes.
C. Improving living conditions for wildlife. D.Sampling insects directly in their habitats.
33. Why is the accessibility of eDNA data a potential problem?
A. It ignores practical applications of eDNA data.
B. It may lead to unchecked genetic engineering.
C. It could result in misuse of human genetic data.
D. It raises concerns about wildlife disease research.
34. What does Duffy suggest people concerned do?
A. To develop potential applications. B. To sample genetic information.
C. To highlight advanced technology. D. To establish appropriate regulations.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. eDNA: A New Frontier in Ecological Monitoring
B. eDNA: Human Detection Meets Privacy Challenges
C. eDNA: A Breakthrough in Marine Research Techniques
D. eDNA: Transforming Our Comprehension of Biodiversity

When Devon’s sister, Lil, went off to college, Devon’s stomach felt all twisty. Then Mom said that Kapil, a high-school student from India, would be staying in their house and living in Lil’s room, for they were the host family. The piece of news made Devon’s stomach feel worse, as he missed his sister so much. ”What if I can’t understand him?” Devon asked. ”He speaks English well,” Mom said.
On Kapil’s first day, he exchanged some small talk with Devon before disappearing into his new room. Lil’s room, Devon reminded himself. As days went on, Kapil started spending more time in the rest of the house. He was in the kitchen a lot, whose cooking always filled the air with steam and spice that made Devon’s eyes water. “Smells wonderful!” Mom exclaimed. When Lil called a few days later, Devon told her about Kapil’s cooking. “Lucky! I love Indian food!” Lil said. “But it seems too spicy for me,” replied Devon.
One day, Mom had to work late. “Kapil will stay with you until I get home,” she explained. Devon’s stomach twisted. Lil had always stayed with him when Mom had to work late.
When Devon got home from school, Kapil greeted him at the door. “Would you like a snack?” Kapil asked. Devon shrugged. Lil and he used to cook together after school, which they called “making messes.” Kapil opened the refrigerator. “How about a yogurt?” “I had one at breakfast,” responded Devon in a cold voice. Kapil opened a cupboard and smiled. “Wait here.” He returned with a package. “I’ll cook an Indian snack,” he announced. Kapil pulled out a round, thin cracker the size of a small Frisbee(飞盘), poured oil into a pan and fried the cracker. Then the kitchen was filled with spicy smells. After a while, Kapil handed Devon a plate with the sizzling pancake on it. “Papadum (印度薄饼),” he said. “Made from bean flour.”

A篇【答案】21. C 22. D 23. A
根据第一段中“Described by The Irish Times as “A Dragons’ Cave for writers”, each year the Fair aims to introduce up-and-coming writers to top publishers and literary agents. (被《爱尔兰时报》描述为“作家的龙洞”,每年的书展旨在向顶级出版商和文学代理商介绍崭露头角的作家)”可知,书展的目的在于为作家提供平台,让他们被出版商和文学代理商认识。故选C项。
【22题详解】推理判断题。根据The Prize中“To get fully prepared for the meeting with publishers and agents, the winners will receive a place in a workshop on “How to Promote Your Novel”, two weeks in advance. (为了充分准备与出版商和代理商的会面,获奖者将提前两周获得参加“如何推广你的小说”研讨会的机会)”可知,研讨会将会教获奖者推广他们的小说。由此推知,这会帮助他们把小说精彩地呈现出来。故选D项。
【23题详解】细节理解题。根据How to Enter中“Applicants are required to send a summary within 300 words and up to five chapters of their novel (申请人必须提交一篇300字以内的摘要,以及小说五个章节以内的内容)”可知,一篇200字的摘要符合书展的要求。故选A项。
B篇【答案】24. D 25. B 26. C 27. D
根据文章第一段“He'd entered the pond in a rowboat and was hacking away at the ice with a rock to create a path to the dog.” A选项“他直接游向狗”,文章未提及;B选项“他打电话给Ryan Arens求助”,原文是Arens看到老人在施救,不是老人打电话求助; C选项“他用一根棍子去够狗”,文章也未提及;所以D选项“He hacked at the ice with a rock.”
根据前文“Animals are my weakness," he told the Great Falls Tribune, explaining why he stripped down to his boxers and socks, even though the temperature was in the 30s, and 以及后文的“the rowboat”可知,Arens因为动物是他的软肋,尽管温度很低,他还是只穿着短裤和袜子,然后对小船做了某个动作去救狗。结合语境,他应该是“控制、掌管”了小船去救狗。A选项“borrowed(借)”,文章未体现借的意思;C选项“repaired(修理)”,文中没说修理船;D选项“sold(卖)”,更不符合语境,所以B选项“took control of(控制、掌管)”正确。
【26题详解】推理判断题 。A选项“狗的主人住得离池塘很远”,文章中说“where anxious bystanders carried the dog to the home of the rowboat owner, a retired veterinarian. Once in the house himself, Arens jumped into a warm shower with the dog until they both defrosted. The next day, Arens was back working the same neighborhood when the dog's owner came over to thank him for saving Sadie.” 可知狗主人住得不远,A错误;B选项“Ryan Arens在日常生活中经常拯救动物”,文中仅讲述了这一次救狗的经历,不能推断出经常救动物,B错误;C选项“Sadie认出并感激Ryan Arens”,从“He opened the door to his pickup, and Sadie bolted out. She made a beeline for Arens, leaping on him and bathing him in wet kisses.”
A 33. C 34. D 35. B
根据第一段“By analyzing water, soil, or other environmental materials for DNA pieces, researchers can tell that thousands of different species have been in an area without having to observe the actual species passing through,可知eDNA在生态学研究中的主要用途是鉴别生活在一定区域里的物种。故选A。
根据第三段最后一句“These concerns include the lack of agreement from individuals for their DNA to be collected, potential breaches(侵犯) of privacy, and the risk of genetic information being used for commercial purposes.这些担忧包括未获得个人同意就收集其DNA、可能存在的隐私侵犯,以及基因信息被用于商业目的的风险。以及第四段David Duffy教授表示:“..如果没有筛除人类信息,任何人都可以访问这些信息。这就引发了关于许可的问题..”可知,eDNA数据的可获取性会成为一个问题是因为这可能导致人类基因数据被滥用。故选C。
【34题详解】推理判断题。根据最后一段“We are raising these issues early so that policymakers and society have adequate time to develop suitable guidelines.”
D 37. G 38. E 39. C 40. A
【36题详解】空格后说“They can include anger, sadness, worry, loneliness and shame, as well as surprise, happiness, courage and hope, among many others.(它们可能包括愤怒、悲伤、担心、孤独和羞耻,也可能包括惊喜、快乐、勇气和希望,等等。)”,空格处应引出各种各样的感觉,D选项“Feelings are how people experience emotions.(感觉是人们体验情绪的方式。)”
【37题详解】空格后说“All feelings are there to be felt and some can be more uncomfortable than others.(所有的感觉都可以被感受到,有些感觉可能比其他感觉更不舒服。)”,说明感觉不分好坏,G选项“Feelings are sometimes labelled as good or bad but that isn’t helpful.(感觉有时被贴上好或坏的标签,但这并没有什么帮助。)”
【38题详解】由后文的“Next, pay attention to what you’re thinking at this time.(接下来,注意这个时候你在想什么。)”可知,空格处应说“首先该干什么”,E选项“First of all, notice what’s going on with your body.(首先,注意你的身体状况。)” 且其中的“what’s going on with your body(你的身体状况)”和空格后的“Are your fists clenched (攥紧)? Does it seem like there’s a knot in your stomach?(你握紧拳头了吗?你的胃好像有点难受吗?)”相呼应,空后就是说的身体的情况,因此E选项承上启下,符合语境,故选E。
【39题详解】空格前说“Next, pay attention to what you’re thinking at this time.(接下来,注意这个时候你在想什么。)”,因此空格处应提到你可能的想法,C选项“Perhaps you have the thought, “It’s not fair”.(也许你会想,“这不公平”。)”
【40题详解】空格后说“If you’re upset about a difficult feeling, like “I’m feeling angry”, you might count to ten to calm down. Perhaps you notice “I’m feeling nervous”, and you might talk to someone about it.(如果你因为一种困难的感觉而难过,比如“我很生气”,你可能会数到十来冷静下来。也许你注意到“我感到紧张”,你可能会和别人谈论这件事。)”,因此这里是在说人如何处理这些感觉,A选项“Experts call this “name it to tame it”.(专家称之为“给它命名并驯服它”。)”

Devon's stomach twisted again. He stared at the Papadum, not sure if he could handle the spiciness. But Kapil's expectant look made him take a small bite.To his surprise, the flavors burst in his mouth in a pleasant way. It was spicy but also had a unique taste that he never experienced before. Devon took another bite and then another. Before he knew it, he had finished the whole Papadum.
Looking at the empty plate, Devon said to Kapil, "Let's make messes!" Kapil's face instantly lit up with a wide, beaming smile that reached his eyes. Their laughter filled the kitchen as they embarked on a culinary adventure together. They spent the remainder of the evening in a flurry of activity, sharing stories and tips, and creating a medley of new and exciting snacks. Devon realized that having Kapil around wasn't so bad after all. In fact, it might just turn out to be a wonderful and enjoyable time with him while Lil was away.
