My teacher said to a student: “Give me your phone.”
We all looked in surprise. Kyle, a student who I never saw text in class, gave the teacher his phone.
When the teacher left, two students who I often saw text in class started boasting about how they sent text messages and never got caught. “Kyle, you don’t text in class that way!” one of them said. “I put my phone under my desk so it looks like I’m looking at my textbooks.”
“Isn’t it funny that we always text and never get caught, but the first time Kyle does it, he gets caught?” the other one laughed.
They must have thought they were smart, because they never got caught and Kyle did. But which situation is worse: getting caught, or getting away with it? Rules are there for a reason. These two students might not have got caught, but neither of them had good grades. They didn’t pay any attention to the class, and I think they will keep doing this.
People don’t just break the law and get thrown into jail right away. They take it one step at a time, starting with smaller rules. Kyle might have got caught, but at least he learned a good lesson. He will not break the rules in the future, so he will learn more in class and stay out of trouble. It’s smarter not to break the rules.
4. The teacher asked Kyle to give his phone because ________.
A. the teacher wanted to teach him how to text B. the students wanted to see Kyle’s new phone
C. he was playing with his phone in class D. the teacher wanted to speak to Kyle’s parents

A. Kyle often texts in class. B. Kyle is not smart enough.
C. Rules are there for no reason. D. The two students who often text in class had bad grades.
6. In the future, the two students might ________.
A. pay more attention in class B. keep texting during class
C. not break any rules again D. give up playing with their phones
7. What would the writer agree with?
A. What the two students said and did were wrong. B. Texting in class without being caught was easy.
C. Texting in class is not a big deal. D. Kyle was a bad student.
C
You may not know a lot of people when you start senior high school. Maybe your friends from junior high school are going to a different senior high school. Even if you know other freshmen (一年级学生), you still feel anxious that you don’t know any upperclassmen. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces?
Most senior high schools hold the freshman orientation (迎新会) before school actually starts. It is helpful because you not only learn your way around the building but also get to meet some of your teachers and fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces.
When you talk to people at orientation, you’ll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They’re all new to the school and don’t know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with your classmates can help you develop friendships.
The work in senior high school is something freshmen are probably worried about. It builds on what you learned in junior high school, giving you a more advanced (高深的) knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it’s a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.
Senior high school also has more after-school activities than junior high school, such as clubs, music and theater groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.
Junior high school taught you the basics of time management and social skills while providing you with a little extra support and guidance. Senior high school gives you the chance to learn how to be more independent and responsible.
8. How do the freshmen usually feel on their first day of senior high school?
A. Proud. B. Nervous. C. Excited. D. Curious.
9. What are freshmen probably worried about?
A The learning task. B. The ability to make friends.
C The freshman orientation. D. The relationship with teachers.
10. What do after-school activities mainly help students to do?
A. Develop friendships. B. Develop their interests.
C. Build up their strength. D. Improve their learning ability.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. What you’ll learn in senior high school.
B. What you learned in junior high school.
C. The difference between junior high school and senior high school.
D. The importance of being more independent and responsible.
D
Music is said to be a universal language. But for Chase Burton, a deaf filmmaker, music has always been a different experience.
“When I was a kid, I’d lie on the floor above our garage so that I could feel the vibrations (震动) from my brother’s band rocking out below my body. That was one of the first times I began building a relationship with music,” said Burton.
In 2016, his ability to experience music changed completely, thanks to the California – based technology company Not Impossible Labs. It designed a vibrating suit that enables deaf people to “feel” music through their skin. The suit can translate audio (声音) into a range of vibrating pulses (脉冲) that are felt at 24 contact points. Burton has been wearing the suit for four years. “The sound drubs different parts of my body,” said Burton. “Maybe it will strike me in my ankles first. And then I’ll start to feel the vibrations in my back and wrists.”
The creators want to extend the musical experience beyond the deaf community. In 2018, they gave out 150 vibrating suits at a rock concert where half the audience members were deaf and half could hear. Since then, the creators have been working to improve the technology and want the suit to become a consumer product accessible to all, which will be used in live sports broadcasts, or video games.
As a writer and director, Burton has been working to make the movie world more inclusive. For his latest movie he hired all-deaf staff and actors. Burton hopes that the vibrating suits will be available to his film audiences in the future. He believes that the suits can improve emotions while people are watching a movie for normal people as well as the deaf. “I see the tech as a real opportunity to help people understand that music or movies don’t always need to be enjoyed through the ears,” said Burton.
12. What does the underlined word “drubs” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Hits. B. Affects. C. Changes. D. Reflects.
13. Why were normal people provided with the vibrating suit by the creators?
A. To attract more users. B. To promote the sale.
C. To make people enjoy music. D. To carry out an experiment.
14. What does Burton expect of the vibrating suit in the future?
A. It will be used by his film audiences. B. It will help improve the actors’ emotions.
C. It will become the main theme in his movies. D. It will change the normal’s attitude to the deaf.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Deaf Filmmaker’s Musical Experiences
B. The Application of Vibrating Suits to Films
C Wearable Devices for Deaf People Are Coming
D. Vibrating Suits Allow Deaf People to Feel Music

Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter. This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money. Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice. One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be a highlight of their young lives.
The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proudly as they could be. The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say, “You are my knight in shining armor.” He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say, “You got that right.” The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adults’ tickets, so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady told him the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand, lowered her head and her lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say?” The ticket lady again told him the price. The man obviously didn’t have enough money.
How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus? Actually we were not wealthy in any sense, so I understood how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.
Paragraph 1:
Seeing what was going on, my dad seemed to have an idea.

Paragraph 2:
That day my father and I went back to our car.

A 13. D 14. A 15. D
根据第三段中“It designed a vibrating suit that enables deaf people to ‘feel’ music through their skin. The suit can translate audio into a range of vibrating pulses (脉冲) that are felt at 24 contact points. Burton has been wearing the suit for four years. (该公司设计了一种振动服,使聋人能够通过他们的皮肤‘感受’音乐。这套服装可以将声音转换成一系列的,在24个接触点都能感受到的振动脉冲。伯顿穿这套服装已经四年了。)”和下文“Maybe it will strike me in my ankles first. And then I’ll start to feel the vibrations in my back and wrists. (也许它会先打到我的脚踝。然后我就会开始感觉到后背和手腕的震动。)”可知,人体皮肤的24个接触点接收到音乐的震动脉冲,故随着音乐的变化,震动脉冲打击在身体的24个不同的接触点上。由此推测划线词drub与下文的strike同义,与A项“hit(击打,撞击)”同义。故选A项。
根据第四段“The creators want to extend the musical experience beyond the deaf community. In 2018, they gave out 150 vibrating suits at a rock concert where half the audience members were deaf and half could hear. Since then, the creators have been working to improve the technology and want the suit to become a consumer product accessible to all, which will be used in live sports broadcasts, or video games.
根据最后一段中“Burton hopes that the vibrating suits will be available to his film audiences in the future. He believes that the suits can improve emotions while people are watching a movie for normal people as well as the deaf. (伯顿希望他的电影观众在未来也能看到这种震动服。他认为,这种服装可以改善人们在看电影时的情绪,无论是正常人还是聋人。)”可知,Burton期待在未来,这个用皮肤感受音乐振动服能为电影观众观影时所用。故选A项。
通读全文,根据第一段“Music is said to be a universal language. But for Chase Burton, a deaf filmmaker, music has always been a different experience. (据说音乐是一种通用语言。但对于蔡斯·伯顿这位聋的电影制作人来说,音乐一直是一种不同的体验。)”可知,Chase Burton是个聋人,在感知音乐上体验不同;第三段中“In 2016, his ability to experience music changed completely, thanks to the California – based technology company Not Impossible Labs. It designed a vibrating suit that enables deaf people to ‘feel’ music through their skin. The suit can translate audio into a range of vibrating pulses (脉冲) that are felt at 24 contact points. Burton has been wearing the suit for four years. (该公司设计了一种振动服,使聋人能够通过他们的皮肤‘感受’音乐。这套服装可以将声音转换成一系列的,在24个接触点都能感受到的振动脉冲。伯顿穿这套服装已经四年了。)”可知,一个名叫Not Impossible Labs的公司研发了一种振动服,使聋人也感受到了音乐。文章介绍了这个服装的工作原理,技术研发过程以及未来的前景。D项“Vibrating Suits Allow Deaf People to Feel Music (振动服让聋人感受音乐)”,符合作文章标题。故选D项。

Seeing what was going on, my dad seemed to have an idea. My dad put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a $ 20 bill and dropped it on the ground. Then he picked it up and tapped the man on the shoulder and said, “Excuse me, sir, this fell out of your pocket.” The man turned around and saw the money. He knew what was going on, he looked straight into my dad’s eyes, took my dad’s hand in both of his, holding the $20 bill, and with his lips shaking, a tear running down his cheek, he replied, “Thank you, thank you, sir. This really means a lot to me and my family.”
Paragraph 2:
That day my father and I went back to our car. When I asked Dad why he did so, Dad said, “My child, it was a desperate, heartbreaking and embarrassing situation for a father. Surely he wasn’t begging for a handout, but he reminded me of my father, when I was young.” He paused for a while, as if wandering in his memory. “We should appreciate what we have obtained from life and seize every opportunity to help others. We didn’t go to the circus tonight, but we didn’t go without.”
