[广东东莞东华高级中学2024高一月考]My mother looks just like many grandmothers. She comes from a traditional family. She was a career civil servant. In short, she didn’t do crazy stuff. That all changed a few years ago. I still remember the year when she turned 80.She surprised my brother and me with what she described as “independence”.
One day she informed us she’d booked a seven-night trip to Turkey. Alone. Because she had never been. Of course, that was ridiculous. There was no way my brother and I could allow that. A weak, little old lady wandering the streets of Istanbul on her own, not speaking a word of Turkish, with no knowledge of the laws and customs of the land—it was out of the question!
She paid no attention to us. Off she went. When she returned, she told us it had been a wonderful success. As it turned out, she had barely spent any time alone after hiring a taxi driver to show her around Istanbul for some days. He took her to all the sites—the markets,

churches and restaurants. He introduced her to a blanket seller, “A lovely fellow,” and she bought some blankets. The seller took her address details and promised to ship the blankets home. The seller and my mother apparently built a friendship and she told him to drop by if he were ever in Canada. My mother beamed (眉开眼笑) as she told this story.
To our great shock, her blankets did arrive some weeks later, along with a lovely note from the seller Mustafa. To our even greater surprise, the following year Mustafa himself arrived, and called our mother to inform her of that fact.
“He came by for a cup of tea. People drink a lot of tea in Turkey,” my mother told my horrified brother and me.
Her characteristic of independence seems to be thoughtfully based on a realisation that life is to be lived. It reminded me of the line from the movie The Shawshank Redemption: “Get busy living or get busy dying.”

[山西大学附属中学2024高一月考]Keeping a travel journal is one of the best ways to keep the memories of a trip alive. There’s nothing like going back and reading your own words describing a day in a foreign country to realise how easy it is to forget little details. For people who do not write often, keeping a travel journal doesn’t have to be hard. It doesn’t require much work. I usually set aside 15—20 minutes at night before going to bed.
I like to use a notebook and pen because it feels different from typing on a computer, which makes journaling more special. Besides, I believe that handwritten journals will last longer than digital documents (数字文档) and won’t become dated. I recently came across a bag of old travel journals from my grandmother’s home, describing a year of camping around Europe and the Middle East in the 1970s as well as her life on the island of Crete for three years. They’re still readable and I love seeing her handwriting once again.

While I recommend paper journals for daily writing, it doesn’t hurt to have a multimedia approach. For example, on a bus in Sri Lanka, it was too bumpy (颠簸的) to write by hand, so I used my phone to take notes whenever thoughts came to me. This turned out to be a rich store of information that might have been meaningless to anyone else, but made perfect sense to me.
When keeping a travel journal, I also suggest focusing on the most important or memorable part of each day, rather than doing an hour-by-hour description. Ask yourself what made you smile, laugh, or cry, what you ate or smelt in the air, and what the locals were doing. Keeping a travel journal should be fun, but it is important to make it a daily habit.

[江苏镇江2024高一期末]The world’s longest cave system is in the state of Kentucky. Mammoth Cave National Park preserves this unique and historical natural wonder. There may be another 600 miles of cave passageways that have yet to be explored. In addition, more than 200 caves that are disconnected from the larger system can be found in the park.
The underground caves were created naturally by the process of limestone (石灰岩) erosion. Rain and rivers slowly dissolve (溶解) and shape soft limestone. The system is still being shaped today. Not only are they an amazing destination to visit, but the system also provides drinking water for about 40% of the US population.

Mammoth Cave was made into a national park thanks to strong local support. Back in the 1920s, the Southern Appalachian National Park Commission was set up in 1925 to survey proposed park sites, including the caves. After years of work acquiring the land for the park, as well as building roads and public facilities, the park was completed on July 1, 1941.
The park now receives around 2 million visitors a year, with about a quarter taking a tour of the caves—everything from a cultural tour to the more adventurous tours on offer. The cave supports more than 130 wildlife species. The park is also much more than just a cave; the forest around has one of the most diverse (多种多样的) habitats in the country. There are miles of trails open for horseback riding, with canoe trails and great fishing spots. There are also more than 1,300 flowering species in the forest, and animals like wood warblers, thrushes, and bald eagles can regularly be spotted.

[湖北武汉2024高一期中调研]Just being intelligent (聪明的) doesn’t mean someone will be successful. And just because someone is less intelligent doesn’t mean that person will fail. That’s one take-home message from the work of people like Angela Duckworth, who works at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Like many other scientists, Duckworth wondered what makes one person more successful than another. When digging deeper, Duckworth found that the people who performed best shared a quality independent of intelligence. They had what she now calls grit (毅力).Duckworth developed a set of questions to test it. She calls it her “grit scale (等级)”.
In one study of people aged 25 and older, she found that as people age, they become more likely to stick with a project. She also found that grit increases with education. People who finished college scored higher on the grit scale than people who quit before graduation. People who went to graduate school after college scored even higher.
刷阅读理解
85
She then did another study on college students. Duckworth wanted to see how intelligence and grit influenced performance in school. So she compared scores on college-entrance exams, which measure IQ, to school grades and scores on the grit scale. Students with higher grades tended to have more grit. That’s not surprising. Getting good grades takes both smarts and hard work.
But some people counter that this grit means success. Among those people is Marcus Crede, an associate professor at Iowa State University in Ames. He recently pooled the results of 88 studies on grit. Together, those studies tested nearly 67,000 people. And grit did not predict success, Crede found.
However, he thinks grit is very similar to someone’s ability to set goals, work towards them and think things through before acting.
“Study habits and skills, test anxiety and class attendance are far more strongly connected to school grades than grit,” Crede says.“We can teach students how to study well. We can help them with their test anxiety,” he adds.“I’m not sure we can do that with grit.”

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Time to get up. It’s your birthday.” Alex opened his eyes and looked up. His parents were standing next to his bed holding a breakfast muffin (松饼).“You can do anything you want today,” said his mum.
He jumped up to get dressed as quickly as he could, already imagining what kind of day he would have at the beach. He had always dreamed about playing in the sand and jumping in the waves. He nearly tripped (绊倒) as he ran down the stairs on his way to the kitchen.
Alex’s dad asked him what he wanted to do today.“The beach,” he shouted with joy.
The expression on his mum’s face changed from joy to sadness. She knew the one place that her husband would not go to was the beach. When he had been a young boy of Alex’s age, he had a terrifying experience at the beach. Alex’s dad shook off his initial (最初的) shock of hearing his son’s plan.
“How about we go to the zoo instead?” he suggested.“The beach is over two hours away.”

“But Dad, I’ve wanted to go to the beach my whole life,” Alex pleaded (央求).
“Son, I’m sorry, but we are not going to the beach and that’s final.”
They ended up driving to the zoo. It was an exciting day, but Alex could not get the beach out of his mind. He longed to build a sandcastle, swim in the ocean and chase the incoming and outgoing waves. The beach seemed like the best place on Earth.
Over the next few weeks, he dreamed about it almost every night. Any free moment he had was spent filling his room with pictures and drawings of beaches. He repeatedly pleaded with his mum to help him convince his dad to take them to the beach. Each time she explained that they could do other things as a family, just not the beach.
One night, Alex received what he thought was good news. His dad was going on a three-day business trip the next day.“This is an opportunity,” he thought to himself.
