They are the sort of friends who are so close that they trust each other with their lives. If one falls, the other is there to catch him.
They are Wellman, whose legs were permanently injured nine years ago in a rock-climbing accident and Corbett, an experienced rock climber. Together, they climbed up Half Dome, one of the most iconic landmarks in the Yosemite National Park, through one of the most difficult routes (路线).
During the climb, Corbett took the lead, hit in the metal spikes (尖状物) that guided the rope and climbed up. Then, after Wellman pulled himself up the rope, Corbett went down to remove the spikes and climbed up again. This process was repeated time and again, inch by inch, for 13 days. Wellman’s job was not easy either. He got himself up the rope through upper body strength alone. In all, Wellman calculated that he had done about 5,000 pull-ups up the rope on the climb.

However, when the two men first met, they never talked about climbing.“He knew that was how I got injured,” Wellman said. Until one day, Wellman decided that he wanted to climb again and they started training.
Their climb of Half Dome was not all smooth. At one point, pieces of rock gave way, and Corbett dropped down quickly. Wellman locked their rope in place, stopping the fall at 20 feet. His quick action probably saved his friend’s life.
“Your partner can save your life—you can save your partner’s life,” Wellman said as the pair received congratulations from friends.“There are real close ties.”

[山西省实验中学2024高一期中]Having friends is obviously good for countless reasons. And showing the world that you have lots of friends, for example on social media, seems like a great idea. If that is the truth, your goal is to enlarge your social network. Once people see how popular you are, they’ll want to join that popular circle, perhaps in the hope that some of your popularity will rub off on them. Thus, they may enlarge their friend circle.
However, can a person even have too many friends at the same time? It’s always been a misunderstanding that if you have more friends, people will be more likely to want to be friends with you.
In fact, a new study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology shows that having too many friends may work against you. In a series of experiments, the authors prove that people usually prefer to befriend people who have fewer friends than they do, not more. The authors call this phenomenon (现象) the “friend-number paradox (悖论)”, which is also the title of their new paper.

Social ties are obviously important. Having more of these connections suggests greater social value, and more potential possibilities. So it seems reasonable to assume that people will focus their social energies on making friends with people who have lots of friends already.
But the problem is that these social ties are only valuable if there’s reciprocity (互惠) involved. Friendship goes hand in hand with certain responsibilities and expectations. And people with lots of friends may not be able to carry out those responsibilities—especially those with too many friends.
In other words, “friendship quality” matters as much, if not more, than only the number of friends you have. Having lots of friends means your valuable social resources become diluted (削弱), making you less able to be a good friend. And other people will consider the fact when deciding whether to make friends with you. They don’t want to spend their valuable social resources on someone who is unlikely to pay them back.

1.What do the underlined words “rub off on” in paragraph 1 mean?( )
C
A.Look forward to. B.Hold on to.
C.Have an impact on. D.Take control of.

2.What does the “friend-number paradox” show?( )
D
A.The secrets to becoming popular. B.The ways of winning more friends.
C.The advantages of having many friends. D.The problems with having many friends.

B
A.They don’t know about reciprocity.
B.They may fail to perform their duties.
C.They are more likely to be good friends.
D.They have more valuable social resources.
根据倒数第二段中的“Friendship goes hand in hand with certain responsibilities and expectations. And people with lots of friends may not be able to carry out those responsibilities—especially those with too many friends.”

Public health data signals a genuine crisis in adolescent mental health: rising rates of anxiety, depression, and hopelessness. But as we worry about tweens and teens who are struggling, we can’t ignore another growing effect—the burdens that are shouldered by their friends and peers in an “always on” world.
We have studied teens and tech for over a decade. Their networks are ever-expanding, in no small part because there’s a sense that being nice means accepting fellow requests from acquaintances and friends-of-friends. And it’s not just staying connected—it’s keeping up with what others post, too.
Social media platforms thus make it technically possible to maintain more relationships than we are historically actually wired to track and manage. The result is an overwhelming wave of social information. It’s especially intense for adolescents whose developmental sensitivities drive them to care deeply about what their peers are doing and thinking.

Significant stress comes with trying to be a “good friend” in the age of social media. Friendship requires both public and behind-the-scenes support. Even before a social media post is made public, close friends can be pulled into photo selection, editing, and final examination. Besides, they need to respond in the right way and in the right amount of time, which differs from one relationship to another. Replying too quickly can be seen as overeager, especially when the friendship is new or not close. But when it’s a close friend, too long a lag (时间间隔) can be hurtful.
The qualities that are key to building or breaking friendships are actually the same as they’ve always been: mutual (相互的) sharing of joys and sorrows, a give and take of acceptance and support, and an ability to weather and resolve conflicts. But technologies have transformed how friendships play out. Social media increases the burdens that come along with being a good friend. Too often, these dynamics hit teens hard in ways that are lost on adults. And that is what should be changed with the help of parents, schools and other parts of society.

[广东东莞东华高级中学等校2025高一期中联考]I was thirteen years old. My family had moved to Southern California from North Florida a year before. Angry and stubborn, I could not adapt to this sudden change. Like so many teenagers, I struggled to escape from anything that did not agree with my picture of the world. As a “good without need of guidance” kid, I rejected any open offering of love.
One night, after a particularly difficult day, I stormed into my room, shut the door and got into bed. As I lay down in the privacy of my bed, my hands slipped under my pillow. There was an envelope. I pulled it out and on the envelope, it read, “To read when you’re alone.” Since I was alone, no one would know whether I read it or not, so I opened it. It said, “Mike, I know life is hard right now. I know you are upset and I know we don’t do everything right. I also know that I love you completely and that nothing you do or say will ever change that. I am here for you and I love you—that will never change. Nowadays, I travel the world helping people. I was in Sarasota, Florida, teaching a seminar (研讨课) when, at the end of the day, a woman came up to me and shared the difficulty she was having communicating with her son. We walked out to the beach, and I told her my mum’s undying love and the “To read when you’re alone” letters. Several weeks later, I got a card that said she had written her first letter and left it for her son. That night as I went to bed, I put my hands under my pillow and remembered the relief I felt every time I got a letter. In my teen years, the letters were reminders of calm that I was loved in spite of my shortcomings. Today, when the seas of life get stormy, I know that what lies under my pillow is the assurance of love—consistent (始终如一的) and unconditional love that changes my life.

If you are walking across the campus, you can be embarrassed with every pair of eyes on you, especially when you’re 13 years old. I looked around to find a friendly face or a smile, but got nothing. I was quite disappointed. And I, in turn, felt a little foolish, walking across the campus with a false smile on my face. I was simply hoping to follow the advice that my mother had given me years before: When things get awkward, smile. No matter where you are, a smile will always be understood. At that very moment, however, I felt my mother’s advice didn’t work.
Just at that time, I was asking myself questions and concerns of any 13-year-old on the first day of school: Where would I sit at lunch? Who would I talk to? Not to mention, how would I make friends when I didn’t even speak the language? My heart was beating fast, and I felt nervous. Still, I did my best to be calm so as not to let others know just how scared I truly was.

When the teacher introduced me to the class as the “American girl”, 10 sets of hands immediately shot up. Some students had questions, while others wanted to practise their English with me. Because I didn’t speak much Chinese then, I talked with the other students through body language mixed with English and broken Chinese. However, I was not sure how much of it was positive. It was almost as if they weren’t sure what to make of me and I was being examined. Then again, who could blame them? After all, I was the first American ever to attend the school. So, we were all first-timers.
