Many of us can't wait for our first holiday without parents. It's exciting to choose the destination, activities, and the company. But do these trips always go as planned? Let's hear from Sophie, Fred, and Chris about their experiences.
Last summer, after exams, I invited my friend Paula to Greece. We flew to Athens and headed straight to Milos.Exhausted but eager, we went straight to the beach. You won't believe what happened! We lay down, closed our eyes, and woke up two hours later — completely sunburned! We were boiling and thirsty.Lesson learned: never fall asleep in the sun without sunscreen!
—Sophie, 16
My first holiday was a weekend in London with my friends Jim and Simon. We took a taxi to the bus station, but when we arrived, I realized I'd lost my wallet — probably left it on the bus.Luckily, Jim and Simon lent me the money, so we continued on.Despite the rough start, we stayed at Jim's house and had an incredible weekend sightseeing and exploring.
—Fred, 17
My first trip was a camping adventure with my friend Tom.We went to a campsite in the forest near our town. Not wanting my parents to drive us, we took a bus and walked the rest of the way.Unfortunately, as soon as we arrived, it began to rain, and before we could set up the tent, all our gear (装备) was soaked.Although I managed to pitch the tent quickly, thanks to my previous experience, everything inside was wet.Thankfully, the sun came out the next day, allowing us to dry off our belongings, and from that point on, we had a fantastic time camping in the forest.

Emma Rosen had one of the best and most sought-after jobs in the civil service in the UK. 20,000 candidates (候选人) applied, but fewer than 1,000 were offered jobs. But it turned out that she didn't like sitting at a desk all day, and she struggled to see how what she was doing would make much difference to anything.
Instead of going to work every day and complaining about her job until she reached retirement age, Emma decided to find out what made her happy, what her skills were, and what sort of career would need them. She wrote a list of the jobs she had wanted to do since childhood and set about getting two-week placements (安排) in all of them over a year.
She was 24 years old, and she wanted to have tried out at least 25 different jobs before her 25th birthday. She spent the months before she quit her job saving up her year off, and spent all her free time setting up the different jobs.
A year later, Emma said her favorites were the jobs that were more creative, relevant to travel or were outdoors. “Things like travel writing, archaeology, farming, working with the police, being a blogger, an explorer and an author,” she said.
“Considering that I am now working as a writer and speaker, communication skills in both verbal (口头的) and written form have been the most important. There were also plenty of more technical skills that I learned, like website design, social media management, building a commercial brand and conducting interviews.”
Emma added she also saw her softer people-focused skills improve. “I could be very adaptable, quickly build relationships and accept change — I could walk into a new team or situation and get on well with everyone. Finally, there were things like showing that I was active, an independent and creative thinker as well as an innovative problem solver — I could certainly show that I could think outside the box!”

Libraries often receive returned books with a love bite (咬) or two, and the Middleton Public Library in Middleton, Wisconsin, is no exception.
In the past, people who returned damaged books would be responsible for getting a new one.“Sometimes they feel nervous about coming to tell us,” said Katharine Clark, the deputy director of the library.“We don't want a damaged thing to damage their relationship with the library.”
So, the workers in Middleton Public Library created a new policy (政策).Damaged book fees are canceled under one condition: The patron (顾客) must send a photo of the cat, dog or sometimes child with the wrongdoing.
“We just thought it would be a fun little thing that we could do at our library,” said Clark, adding that they were inspired by the Worcester Public Library's “March Meowness” plan, which forgave fines (罚款) for damaged or lost library books if patrons sent in a photo of a cat — theirs or someone else's.
“It's really showing a fun side to the library,” said Clark, adding that when they began the policy, they decided to post the pet photos on social media, with the agreement of the person who sent them.
The second post started getting a lot of attention, with thousands of people sharing it and the post receiving over 18,000 likes.“It's been interesting to watch how a post gains_virality,” said Rebecca Light, a librarian who works on the library's social media team.“We've seen comments, shares and follows from all over the world.”
Since the start of the new policy at the end of April, four dogs have come forward.Jean Ligocki, a library patron, was happy to learn of the library's new policy.“Anything that keeps access (使用权) open to people who might be disadvantaged and might not have the money to pay for a damaged book, I love that,” she said.

D
In most cases, people pick the easiest way out: the path of least resistance. Yet, it is the hard choice — the path of most resistance — that is more beneficial and provides most success in the long run. How do these paths differ? What are the dangers of an easy life? What are the rewards for a hard life?
Taking the path of least resistance means choosing the easiest available option, without thinking about its long-term consequences. For example, you eat whatever and whenever you like. It may feel nice at first but they have a very high price — guaranteed obesity (肥胖). Most people in modern world follow this path, and this is why so many people struggle without self-control, good habits, etc.
The path of most resistance is about choosing the option that will lead to more personal growth, even if it means suffering in the early stage. For example, it may cost you a lot to quit watching TV for hours. But over the long term, you'll free up a lot of time that will lead to a more satisfying life than that of a couch potato. At first sight, this way is unattractive. It requires effort and loss of pleasure, and leads to potential suffering. Yet, on the other side of all that lies a world of more confidence and self-control. In the end, they more than make up for the passing shallow pleasures.
We're lazy by nature. Some may point out that because of this laziness that we now enjoy so many wonders of technology that people in the past would kill to have. But ask the same individuals praising laziness if they would be happy living a life where everything is given to them the moment they think about it. They would have zero difficulties, no aims in life and no obstacle to get over and no wise human would want such an existence.
12.How does the author show the dangers of choosing the easy path?
A.By asking questions.
B.By giving examples.
C.By giving explanations.
D.By making a comparison.
13.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Watching TV for hours.
B.Getting shallow pleasures.
C.Having many life struggles.
D.Choosing the path of most resistance.
根据画线词所在句“The path of most resistance is about choosing the option that will lead to more personal growth, even if it means suffering in the early stage.”
14.Which of the following would the author agree with?
A.Life is to be enjoyed, not suffered.
B.There should be some challenges in life.
C.Set your life goals as early as possible.
D.Good habits provide short-term pleasures.
根据最后一段中的“They would have zero difficulties, no aims in life and no obstacle to get over and no wise human would want such an existence.”
15.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A.To tell us humans are lazy by nature.
B.To encourage us to take the hard path of life.
C.To prove that laziness leads to wonders in life.
D.To show the common lifestyles of young people.
根据全文内容,尤其是第一段中的“Yet, it is the hard choice — the path of most resistance — that is more beneficial and provides most success in the long run.”

Jane was a disabled college student. Her travelling around mainly depended on a wheelchair, but Jane studied hard and got two degrees. Her kindness and determination deeply impressed her professors and many schoolmates, and she was loved by them.
May 19th 2019, that was the day Jane would graduate with her bachelor's degree. The graduation ceremony was to be held on the football field. Seats for the graduates were set up on the grass. While family, friends, and other audience members crowded into stadium, Jane's proud parents had travelled far to see her graduate.
Jane and other graduates would go to the stage at the end of the football field to receive their diplomas from schoolmaster. On that day, a folding chair was removed at the end of a row of graduates, and Jane's wheelchair fitted into the space nicely. When the graduation ceremony began, the schoolmaster gave an inspiring speech, encouraging students to work hard and dream big. Later, the period of presenting graduates with diplomas began.
Many graduates including Jane's good friend Carolyn, one by one walked across the football field in their graduation dresses and received their diplomas. They smiled brightly for the cameras and returned to their seats to cheers from the audience. At last, it was Jane's turn. Carolyn began pushing her across the field toward the ramp (斜坡) and the stage to help her get the diploma. Jane was thankful and joyful, expecting to celebrate the big moment in her life. And her parents watched her excitedly.
When moving forward, Carolyn and Jane felt the eyes of the crowd. Then sadly, near the ramp, one wheel of Jane's wheelchair sank deep into an unexpected big hole hidden in the grass. Then the wheelchair fell to one side and Jane fell on the grass. Her graduation dress was covered with wet mud. Jane's face burned with shame, embarrassment and shock at once. She was worried people would laugh, with tears in her eyes.

Carolyn rushed to help Jane get back into her wheelchair while keeping apologizing. Being too nervous, Jane couldn't make it, falling down again, though Carolyn had made all her efforts to help her. With hands covering her face, Jane wept helplessly. Everyone was looking in her direction with concern and encouragement and her parents were rushing here with a new dress rapidly. “Look up, Jane.” Carolyn whispered to Jane excitedly, “Everyone is caring about you and your parents are coming here!” Jane raised her head slowly, looking around, with tears rolling down her cheeks. At this time, the schoolmaster ran down to them, helping Carolyn carry Jane back into the wheelchair voluntarily.
“Jane, you can change your dress before receiving the diploma,” said the warm-hearted schoolmaster. “Thank you for your considerateness, sir.” Jane took the new dress from her parents' hands and got dressed quickly. After pushing her to the stage in person, the headmaster awarded the diploma to Jane solemnly. At the meantime, the audience burst into thunderous applause. Everyone was celebrating the big moment for Jane and her parents were watching her proudly, when Jane felt thankful and joyful.

A moment later, my father came down the slide, too. There was a note of excitement on his face. He rushed over and gave me a high-five.“Nice job, Selina! It wasn't that hard, was it?” Looking up at the high slide again, I exclaimed proudly,“Yes! We survived!”We exchanged a knowing smile, both realizing I had conquered the fear inside and made a perfect leap. It was this experience that taught me although difficulty comes in millions of forms, what I need to do is just try to challenge myself and take a leap of faith. It will definitely lead me to success.
Finally, I arrived at my dad's house and saw him sitting alone in the yard. He looked up and rose in surprise and delight as my shadow was cast upon him from behind. He hugged me and cried before I could even greet him, “I've been waiting for your coming every single day, son!” He wept on my shoulder. I quit the job in California and lived with my dad. I realized money isn't everything. It cannot buy things as precious as love and family.Meanwhile, I am proud of my right decision.
Now I am fortunate enough to have started my PhD.I have realized that the most important thing for a person is not their grades.I have realized how much my parents loved me and I never could have recovered without their support, and I thought we finally understood each other. I was more than grateful to them. I finally discovered my passion in life, and now I get to put together my intense curiosity for biology with my love for math!

better things to think about.Staying focused can still be a challenge in adult life, but understanding how to do it, and knowing what is distracting you, can help.
Scientists have looked at what makes us procrastinate and found a number of ways to help us stay in the zone. One of the most obvious things is eliminating noise.Research by Science Focus magazine found silence is best for concentration, or a gentle background hum and coffee shop noise is great! It also found turning off notifications on your phone, or switching it off altogether, removes a major distraction and helps us focus on the task at hand.
Another possible cure for a short attention span is brain training.Psychologists and neuroscientists are increasingly interested in our ability to knuckle down and have looked at what we can change inside our head to make us concentrate.

At the end of the day, I was on my way to the bus which we didn't have in India either. I saw my bus and sat down inside happily. I was thinking, “today wasn't so bad.” As time passed that year, I developed some friendships and started to love my school.
