What happens to old Olympics stadiums after the medals have all been awarded? Here are
four host cities taking a different approach, repurposing their Olympics structures for less
sporty uses.
Los Angeles,California
The Grand Olympic Auditorium was constructed in 1924,and after the Games it
continued to host boxing and wrestling matches. The building even served as the film set for
parts of Rocky. The venue was so well known around Hollywood-hosting greats like Cassius
Clay,Rage Against the Machine,Andre the Giant and Little Richard.

Lake Placid,New York
Most people entering the now remodeled 1980 Olympic Village in Lake Placid are in a lot
of trouble. It's not much of a surprise, though;this Olympic Village was built with a prison in
mind, because the only way Lake Placid could get funding from the government for the
Olympics was that they had a secondary purpose for any new buildings.Only the Federal
Bureau of Prisons(FBP)offered to be the second use for the Village complex.
Beijing,China
After the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, the National Aquatics Center was restored. And half
of it is now Asia's largest waterpark, called Happy Magic Water Cube. There are 13
waterslides,a lazy river,a wave pool and a spa.The second floor of the building has an
auditorium with 17,000 seats.
Helsinki,Finland
Originally constructed in 1937,the Tennispalatsi was never meant to last as a permanent
structure. It first housed a car dealership and was restored one year later to add four tennis
courts as the city began opening various sports venues around town. Then the venue hosted
basketball when the Games finally came to Helsinki in 1952.Now,the Tennispalatsi holds the
Helsinki City Art Museum and several restaurants.

"Promise me you won't marry a farmer,"says a character in The Love ofa Good Woman.
Instantly, the reader is in Alice Munro territory.Ms Munro, the daughter of a silver-fox farmer,
was brought up in rural Ontario. As a girl, she was told that the worst thing you could do was to
"think you were smart".She enrolled at the University of Western Ontario to study journalism
but dropped out when her scholarship dried up.Then Ms Munro married young and moved to
Vancouver.
It was not the housework that dragged her down;it was the assumption that women who
tried to do something as challenging as writing were inappropriate. She wrote when her
daughters were taking a nap.Deep in domesticity in suburban Vancouver, she dreamed up plots
She was as consumed by the routine of daily life-cooking,cleaning,taking care of her
children-as by the stories she was writing in her head in the deadness of early afternoon. Each
story has layers, ranging from the ordinary to the excellent. Her characters do anything to avoid
confronting their pain.
In 1977,her first story,Royal Beatings, was published in the New Yorker;it was followed
by many more.Her first book,Dance ofthe Happy Shades,won the Governor General's Award-one
of Canada's highest literary awards-yet still she was dismissed by many as a shy housewife.
In 2013,she became the first Canadian woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, but was
too unwell to travel to Stockholm for the ceremony.Instead, the Nobel Foundation visited her
at her daughter's home in Victoria,British Columbia,and recorded an interview.In it,she said
she wanted her stories to move people. She wanted readers to feel they were different when
they finished reading.

A.She was short of tuition fees.
B.She got married and had to leave.
C.She held no liking for journalism.
D.She was subject to traditional views.

From hot springs to rocks deep beneath the ocean floor, bacteria grow in the unlikeliest
places. Now,Manuel Porcar,a microbiologist at the University of Valencia and the chief
executive officer of Darwin,a company that works on industrial applications of microbes,
found another bacterial habitat:the microwave.
Porcar and his team at Darwin explore different environments in search of new microbes
that could have industrial applications. They were keen to explore non-traditional environments,
such as the microwave.Alba Iglesias,a researcher in Porcar's lab and co-author of the study,
sampled microwaves from homes,shared spaces,laboratories,and industrial settings.Upon
sequencing (the samples and culturing the bacteria in Petri dishes, the team identified
various species.
Home microwaves harbored a lot of bacteria that are found on the human skin and other
kitchen surfaces that humans frequently contact. The scientists also noted some pathogenic
bacteria,a group with the ability to cause diseases in their host organisms.Pankaj Mehta,a
biophysicist at Boston University studying microbial ecosystems, cautioned the study is still at
the initial phase and that there are technical reasons to not be too worried about pathogens.
While the lab microwaves housed some skin bacteria, they were home to extremophiles
that are known to resist high temperatures and harsh doses of radiation, like the ones found in
deserts or on solar panels. For instance, the team found Deinococcus, one of the strongest
bacteria alive with the ability to survive in outer space as well.
"I've constantly for 15 to 20 years been saying 'clean the outside of your microwave to
make sure it's disinfected.'Now it looks like we're going to include the inside of the
高三第三次诊断考试英语试题第6页(共12页)
microwave as well."Mehta believes that this is yet another example of how microbial
communities can survive in extreme environments-from space shuttles to nuclear reactors,
and now microwaves.
28.What's the purpose of Porcar's study?
A.To expand industrial applications.
B.To explore new microbial communities.
C.To seek new microbes for industrial use.
D.To test the function of industrial microwaves.
29.What does the underlined word"culturing"in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Inspiring.
B.Growing.
C.Assigning.
D.Sharing.
30.What can we learn from Pankaj Mehta's words?
A.There is no need to worry about any microwave bacteria.
B.The sequencing method can precisely identify all bacteria.
C.Samples can determine specific microwave bacteria types.
D.It is technically difficult to detect microwave pathogen risk.
31.What is the characteristic of extremophiles?
A.They are easily killed in normal temperatures.
B.They can cause diseases in their host organisms.
C.They have the ability to endure severe conditions.
D.They are transferred from the outside of the microwave.

You're walking somewhere you've never been before and suddenly feel as though you've
strolled down the same road already. You're experiencing the well-known phenomenon deja vu,
but what is deja vu really, and why does the strange feeling happen?
Deja vu is the feeling that something a person is currently experiencing has already
occurred in the past.Experts refer to this phenomenon as a memory illusion involving
familiarity and unfamiliarity. It happens when an experience is familiar against people's
knowledge that this sense of familiarity is inaccurate.
Some people experience deja vu to a frequent degree to them.Such cases can be caused
by substance abuse, migraine (and anxiety. However, temporal lobe epilepsy is
高三第三次诊断考试英语试题第7页(共12页)
thought to be the principal cause of such frequent deja vu.It may arise from attacks in the
brain's temporal lobe or disorder in brain regions involved in storing and recalling memory.
However, deja vu is also experienced by individuals without epilepsy or other conditions,so
there must be other explanations as to why it occurs.
One possible mechanism is the memory-based theory which centers on the role of
familiarity and recognition in deja vu.This theory suggests that deja vu arises when a current
situation shares similarities with a previously encountered but forgotten experience. It may
result from our brain's attempt to make sense of these perceived similarities and create a
feeling of recognition, even if we cannot consciously recall the original experience.
O'Connor,a lecturer at the University of St.Andrews in Scotland, and his team used a
brain scanning technique to check which parts of the brain are active when deja vu is triggered
in the lab. From their result,it was not the hippocampus (that was active, but the
medial prefrontal cortex,a region involved in resolving conflicts between what we remember
experiencing and what we've actually experienced. This region of the brain shoots off a signal
when such a mismatch occurs, and this may explain why deja vu is more common in young
people than old.As a person gets older, deja vu is not as frequent because the general checking
system is in decline.
32.What is deja vu according to the text?
A.A future prediction
B.A new brain function.
C.Arare mental disease.
D.A memory confusion.
33.What is the major cause of deja vu in some cases?
A.Lack of sleep.
B.Temporal lobe epilepsy.
C.Intense headaches.
D.Addictive substance misuse.
34.What does the memory-based theory focus on?
A.When deja vu occurs.
B.Why deja vu is rare
C.How deja vu is formed.
D.Where deja vu starts.
35.Why is deja vu less common in old people?
A.Memory fades in the hippocampus.
B.They are less sensitive to the outside.
C.Their medial prefrontal cortex declines.
D.They have fewer unfamiliar experiences.

Pessimists typically have a doubtful outlook-they may focus heavily on what can go
wrong. As a consequence, they may be genuinely surprised when things work out,or question
the positive outcomes.Because pessimists always expect the worst things to happen, they tend
to have lower well-being.36
It might be hard to shake off pessimism, and it is OK to be a little pessimistic. After all,a
healthy amount of pessimism can help us prepare for challenges. However,if you want to
overcome excessive pessimism, here are a few strategies that can work.
Exploit positive expressions.37Try writing down a few simple positive
affirmations somewhere within your reach and repeat them often, such as "Today will be a
productive day."and"I am capable of doing great things."
Exercise gratitude.Pessimists tend to hold on to unfavorable experiences.38And
when you recite your affirmations, also tell yourself something that you are thankful for.
Practice mindfulness.Mindfulness is being present without judgments. Thus, you avoid
attaching a negative label to everything when you practice mindfulness and see things in a
realistic light.
39 If you catch yourself expecting negative outcomes, try to change your mindset.
For instance,if you tell yourself,"I don't want to go to this party because I won't enjoy it,"try
saying,"I may or may not enjoy the party, but I won't know if I don't go."
Do what you can,and hope for the best. You may still expect the worst.40 If you
put in enough effort and are prepared for the worst, great things do indeed happen.
Pessimism can ruin the joys, but it isn't always bad,as long as it is balanced with a
healthy dose of optimism.Yet,if you are overly pessimistic, you may start experiencing anxiety
and show symptoms of depression.Luckily, pessimism is something we can overcome.
A.Reframe your thoughts.
B.Develop a critical mindset.
C.But terrible things are actually rare.
D.It's important to forgive ourselves for our shortcomings.
E.To keep pessimism at bay, repeat positive statements to yourself.
F.Try to call up good things in the past and everything you appreciate.
G.Also, they usually focus on their weaknesses and thus lack confidence.
