(原创)Revitalizing Little Free Libraries: Build Community Through Books
Ten years after bringing the global Little Free Library movement to Fort Wayne, the local Rotary Club is launching a city-wide project to renew these neighborhood book-sharing places. What started as a 100-year anniversary project in 2016 has grown into a network of 78 small wooden boxes across parks, fire stations, schools and front yards, providing free books to people of all ages.
Project Details
• Check Phase (May 1-15, 2026): Volunteers will look over all existing libraries, noting damage, book numbers and usage levels. Residents can report library problems through the official website.
• Fix & Add Books (May 16-31, 2026): Broken boxes will be fixed or replaced. The club plans to add 2,000 new books, including 800 children's books and 500 Spanish books.
• Volunteer Caretakers Wanted: The club needs 30 new volunteer caretakers to look after libraries, organize book exchanges and host community reading events. Caretakers get free training and a $50 annual book budget.

(原创)Nairobi, Kenya, has long struggled with serious air pollution, which causes over 3,000 early deaths every year. Road transport is responsible for 40% of its harmful PM2.5 emissions, far more than factories or building sites. The main culprits are matatus—old, brightly painted minibuses that serve as the city's primary public transport, carrying 70% of Nairobi's daily travelers. Most owners are small business people who cannot afford to replace their noisy, polluting diesel(柴油的) vehicles with expensive electric ones.
Two 17-year-old high school students, Neema Wanjiru and Kevin Omondi, decided to solve this problem themselves after seeing many classmates miss school due to breathing problems. They spent six months researching and testing different materials in their school lab, finally creating the HewaSafi (Swahili for "clean air") exhaust filter. What makes their invention truly special is that it is made almost entirely from local farm waste and recycled materials that would otherwise be thrown away.
The filter uses dried nut shells and corn cobs, which are abundant and almost free in Kenya, as the main filtering materials. It also includes steel net from old fences, copper wires from broken electronics, and parts from used car batteries. The most creative part is a small sealed box filled with living green plants, which takes in carbon dioxide and other harmful gases as hot exhaust passes through it.
The entire prototype(原型) cost just $125 to build, and independent tests show it can reduce PM2.5 emissions by an amazing 93%. "We wanted something affordable that local mechanics could easily make and repair," said Wanjiru. "We didn't want to create a fancy solution that only rich people could buy."
Since launching their project in March 2026, the teenagers have installed over 50 filters on matatus across Nairobi. Drivers report that their passengers now complain less about coughing and headaches. They recently won the African regional prize at the 2026 Earth Prize, receiving $12,500 to develop their invention further. They plan to set up a small workshop to produce the filters locally and train other young people to make them.
"Air pollution doesn't just hurt the planet—it makes ordinary people sick, especially children," said Omondi. "We believe that everyone deserves to breathe clean air, no matter where they live or how much money they have."
24. What is the main cause of air pollution in Nairobi?
A. Old diesel minibuses. B. Factory emissions.
C. Building site dust. D. Burning farm waste.
25. What makes the HewaSafi filter special?
A. It uses living green plants.
B. It is made from local materials.
C. It can be recycled completely.
D. It works on all types of vehicles.
26. What does the underlined word "culprits" in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Causes. B. Victims. C. Solutions. D. Places.
27. What can we infer from the text?
A. The project has solved Nairobi's air pollution.
B. Local drivers have accepted the teenagers' invention.
C. The project will spread to other African countries.
D. The teenagers have become very rich from the invention.

(原创)For centuries, Wales has been home to dozens of colorful local dialects(方言). However, in the past 50 years, more than half of these dialects have disappeared. The main reason is that young people increasingly use standard English in schools and workplaces, and fewer elderly speakers are left to pass down the traditional ways of speaking.
Now, a team of researchers from Cambridge University is using artificial intelligence to save these disappearing dialects. The team has developed a special AI algorithm(算法) that can learn from old audio recordings and written texts to reconstruct the pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary of lost dialects.
The project started in 2024, when the team collected over 10,000 hours of audio recordings from elderly Welsh speakers born between 1930 and 1950. These recordings include stories, songs and daily conversations that capture the unique features of different local dialects. The AI system then analyzed these recordings to create detailed digital models of each dialect.
So far, the team has successfully reconstructed three dialects that were thought to be completely lost. The AI can now speak these dialects with 92% accuracy, and it can even translate between standard Welsh and the local dialects. "This is a breakthrough," said project leader Dr. Sarah Evans. "For the first time, we can bring back voices that were silenced forever."
The technology has already had a great influence on local communities. Schools in Wales have started using the AI system to teach students about their local dialects, and many young people are now interested in learning to speak them. The team also plans to create an online library where anyone can listen to the reconstructed dialects and learn more about Welsh culture.
"Language is not just a way of communicating—it carries the history, values and identity of a people," said Dr. Evans. "Our work is about more than just saving words. It's about preserving(保护) the cultural memory of Wales for future generations."
28. Why are Welsh dialects disappearing?
A. They are too difficult to learn. B. Young people prefer standard English.
C. They have no written form. D. Schools forbid their use.
29. What did the research team do in 2024?
A. They created an online library.
B. They won an international prize.
C. They collected a lot of audio recordings.
D. They taught dialects in local schools.
30. What can the AI system do now?
A. It can create new Welsh dialects.
B. It can translate between different languages.
C. It can speak three lost dialects with high accuracy.
D. It can replace human dialect speakers completely.
31. What is the main idea of the text?
A. AI helps protect endangered Welsh dialects.
B. Welsh culture is facing serious challenges.
C. Cambridge University studies Welsh history.
D. Online libraries become popular in Wales.

(原创)For a long time, scientists believed that only humans and a few other mammals(哺乳动物) could experience complex emotions. However, a new study from Queen Mary University of London has found that honeybees can also feel something similar to pessimism(悲观情绪).
The researchers trained 24 bees to associate two different smells with either a sweet reward (sugar water) or a bitter punishment (quinine water). After the training, the bees were divided into two groups. One group was shaken gently for 60 seconds to simulate a predator(捕食者) attack, while the other group was left undisturbed.
Then, the bees were presented with four new smells that were between the two original ones. The researchers measured how quickly the bees flew towards each smell. Bees that had been shaken were much less likely to approach the unclear smells, suggesting they expected a bitter punishment rather than a sweet reward.
"This is the first clear evidence that insects can experience a negative emotional state," said lead researcher Dr. Clint Perry. "The shaken bees behaved exactly like humans who are feeling anxious or pessimistic—they expect the worst in uncertain situations."
The study also found that the bees' pessimistic state lasted for about 10 minutes. During this time, their brains showed changes in the levels of dopamine and serotonin—two chemicals that are closely linked to mood in humans. When the researchers gave the bees a drug that blocks these chemicals, the pessimistic behavior disappeared.
"These findings change our understanding of insect minds," said Dr. Perry. "They show that even small creatures have complex emotional lives. This has important implications for how we treat insects and other animals."
The researchers now plan to study whether bees can also experience positive emotions like happiness. They hope their work will lead to better ways of protecting bees, which are important for pollinating crops and maintaining biodiversity.
32. What is the purpose of the study?
A. To test bees' sense of smell. B. To study bees' emotional states.
C. To train bees to find sugar water. D. To compare bees with other animals.
33. What happened to the shaken bees?
A. They forgot their previous training.
B. They became more active than before.
C. They expected bad results in uncertain situations.
D. They showed no interest in any smells.
34. What is Dr. Perry's attitude towards the study findings?
A. Doubtful. B. Neutral. C. Positive. D. Critical.
35. What can we infer from the text?
A. Bees have the same emotions as humans.
B. The findings may influence animal protection practices.
C. All insects can experience complex emotions.
D. Bees' pessimistic state can last for several hours.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Every day, students move through school carrying not just textbooks but a collection of different identities. In one moment, a student may be a responsible class leader. ____36____ Each role demands a different tone, attitude, and level of confidence. Challenges emerge when these identities conflict. However, what many teenagers don’t realize is that the constant switch between these roles shapes much of their emotional experience at school.
____37____ For example, a student who enjoys helping others may feel comfortable acting as a group organizer during projects, yet the same student may feel uncertain when stepping into a role that requires public speaking or taking the lead in a debate. This contrast can be confusing, making students wonder which version of themselves is real.
But teenagers should bear in mind that identity is not a fixed label. ____38____ The ability to shift roles is a skill that grows stronger with practice. Each role presents a different piece of who they are becoming.
Learning to navigate the challenging transitions begins with self-awareness. Students who take time to reflect — asking themselves why a particular role feels easy or difficult — often develop greater emotional resilience (韧性). ____39____ They recognize when to step forward, when to step back, and when to simply observe.
Eventually, students come to understand that they are not defined by a single identity. Instead, they are shaped by all the roles they play. Mastering the art of switching roles is not about performing for others. ____40____
A. Later, she becomes a supportive friend.
B. Indeed, it is more like a flexible framework.
C. They gain clearer insight into their classmates.
D. Some roles come naturally, while others require effort.
E. Shifting roles isn’t necessarily challenging for everyone.
F. Over time, they learn to adjust without losing themselves.
G. Instead, it is about discovering a complete version of oneself.

“If you can take good care of my kitten for a whole week, I’ll give you that limited edition anime figure you’ve been talking about,” my next door aunt said with a warm smile. It was exactly the motivation I had been longing for. I was crazy about collecting anime figures, and that rare figure was my biggest wish for months.
I prepared carefully in advance. I learned basic kitten raising knowledge online day by day, and bought delicate cat snacks and soft toys in preparation. Every day after school, I rushed home the moment classes ended. I fed the kitten on time, played gentle games with it and cleaned its little nest patiently. I poured all my spare time and patience into looking after it, and I was convinced I would do a perfect job.
Everything went smoothly until the sixth day. I went out to take out trash carelessly, leaving the door unlocked. When I came back minutes later, the cute kitten had run out and disappeared. I searched every corner of the community anxiously for hours, calling its name again and again, yet there was no sign of it. Panic swept over me. I was afraid of losing the precious figure I desired so much. When the aunt called to ask about the kitten later that day, I lied without hesitation, saying the kitten was fine and stayed obediently with me.
When the week ended, the aunt came to my home. I told her the fake story about the well-behaved kitten with a nervous smile. She praised me for my sense of responsibility and handed the shiny figure box to me happily. My hands trembled as I held the box. I was excited to get the figure, but a strong sense of guilt haunted me deeply for my lie.

【答案】36. A 37. D 38. B 39. F 40. G

Paragraph 2:
The next morning, I plucked up my courage to go to the aunt’s house and tell her the whole truth._________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Paragraph 1:
Later that night, I sat by my desk alone, trapped in endless inner struggle. The silver moonlight streamed through the window, casting a faint light on the anime figure that lay quietly before me, which I had dreamed of for months. I stared at it, my hands trembling slightly, and a heavy sense of guilt flooded my heart. If I had told the truth the moment I lost the kitten, I wouldn’t be tortured by such regret now. Every second felt long, and I swore I would admit my mistake bravely the next day.
Paragraph 2:
The next morning, I plucked up my courage to go to the aunt’s house and tell her the whole truth. With my head down, I poured out the truth, my voice choked with anxiety. To my surprise, the aunt smiled gently and patted my shoulder, saying that honesty mattered more than anything. I breathed a sigh of relief, tears of shame and relief rolling down my cheeks. This experience taught me a lifelong lesson that true happiness never comes from lies, but from a sincere and brave heart.

Called “Smart Helper”, my robot is capable of cleaning rooms and watering plants automatically. What makes it truly special is that it is equipped with sensors, without which it couldn’t avoid obstacles, and a timer, by which users are reminded of daily tasks.
Not only did I gain valuable technical skills during the process, but I also came to realize how important it is to combine creativity with technology.
Yours,
Li Hua
