The Power of Dreams
Hughes's poem highlights that dreams are essential to a meaningful life.Without them, life
becomes a "broken-winged bird"unable to rise-or a"barren field frozen with snow"-lifeless
and hopeless. In my view, dreams give us purpose and energy. They are not optional but vital
Take Thomas Edison as an example. His dream of bringing light to the world drove him
through thousands of failed experiments. He held fast to his vision, and eventually his persistence
gave us the electric bulb.Without that dream, his life might have been a frozen field-full of effort
but no breakthrough.
In short, dreams keep us moving forward. As students,we should never let go of our dreams,
because they are the wings that let our lives truly fly.
第二节
When the bell rang for break,Alexa hesitated to talk with Ms.Stone.With the notebook in
her hand, she dragged herself over to the teacher, feeling a mix of anger and regret.Taking a deep
breath, she admitted in a low voice that the notebook had been with her since the fight. Then she
poured out to Ms.Stone everything that had happened between her and Brittany.Listening
without interrupting,Ms.Stone got the whole picture. She gave her a gentle pat on the shoulder
and smiled,"Thank you for being honest,Alexa.I'm sure Brittany will appreciate this-after all,
you could have easily let her get into trouble."
By lunchtime,Ms.Stone sat down with the pair for a talk.At first, the two sat on either side
of their teacher, avoiding direct eye contact. It was Ms Stone who broke the embarrassing silence,
patiently leading them to open up about their inner thoughts. After their honest exchange,Ms
Stone reminded them that they didn't have to always like the same things to be best friends and
suggested that they take turns to make decisions when playing together. All of a sudden,
something clicked. The two girls looked up at each other and broke into big smiles, promising to
respect their differences and value their friendship from then on.

When I attended Open House at my son's school,I scanned the noticeboard outside his
first-grade classroom.I spied Cody's handiwork in a colorful sea of papers. My expectant smile
froze. In one circle where he was supposed to write or draw what he didn't like was"MEN".I
felt scared and confused.
“Cody,”I said casually..“Can you tell me about your work here?
"Yeah,"he replied,then carefully recited each word slowly."I..don't...like...mean."
Such is the world of phonics(自然拼读法),writing words the way they sound.
That exercise served to enhance how our kids perceived the world, divided into two classes:
good and bad.It didn't matter to them what the person looked like. You were either good or you
were bad.
Cody mentioned the boy on the bus who hit Cody in the stomach..."He's mean,Mom!"
cried Cody."He's a bad boy!"
"He's not a bad boy,"I replied,drying his tears."What he DID was bad.There's a
difference..”
That's what the parenting magazines tell us to say.And it makes sense, this mass campaign
of programming us to think in terms of "people coming first."
But I doubted Cody understood my logic.
Until one warm Saturday morning.Cody and I attended a birthday party for his classmate,
Kristi.During the party,Kristi was very nice to Cody. She asked him to sit next to her, ordered
the same drink as him,and opened his gift first. While everyone was eating cake,Kristi leaned
over to me and said,"Mrs.Oliver,Cody is always so nice to me every single day at school. He's
the only one who's never, ever mean to me."
I held back tears. Not just because a little girl was sweet enough to acknowledge Cody's
sensitivity to his mother. But for knowing how cruel kids could be,especially to
skinny-challenged girls like Kristi.
My heart ached from the sudden wave of pride that ran through it.All I could think of was,
wow,he got it.Cody got it.People first.

25.Why did the author say"He's not a bad boy"in paragraph 7?
A.To stress acts over people.

C.To support the magazine's rule.
D.To value words more than deeds.
26.What is the author's feeling towards Kristi?
A.Proud and delighted.

Nelson Dellis,a six-time US memory champion, can memorise the order of a mixed set of
cards in just 40.7 seconds and recite the first 10,000 numbers of i.Scientists have now studied
his brain in detail to understand how he achieves these and whether ordinary people can learn
similar skills.
Researchers scanned Dellis's brain for about 13 hours while he rested and performed
memory tests. In the first test,Dellis was asked to repeatedly memorise short lists of words-a
technique called rote memorisation(机械记忆).His brain activity was compared with that of
two scientists who had good but not extraordinary memory.Surprisingly, all three showed
similar activity in brain regions linked to navigation, visual information, and working memory.
Dellis himself dislikes rote learning, calling it a"terrible approach".
The second test was done only by Dellis. He memorised the order of a mixed set of cards
using the method of loci (also called a "memory palace").This technique turns abstract
information into visual images placed in familiar locations, such as rooms in a house. Then,by
mentally walking through those locations, the information can be recalled in order.
This time, the same three brain regions were activated, but his hippocampus (
(critical for memory)showed an opposite activity pattern:during rote learning,it was more
active when taking in new information;during the memory palace task,it became more active
during recall.Additionally, his caudate nuclei ()structures involved in memory and
高二英语试题第5页(共12页)
learning-were activated.Researchers believe this turns memory into a "comprehensive skill".
Dellis's brain showed much greater functional connectivity-meaning different brain regions
work together more efficiently.
Experts argue that the method of loci should be used more widely in schools because it
takes advantage of our evolved strength in visual-spatial navigation. But Craig Stark at the
University of California, says it is unclear to what extent others can use this technique."We
don't have a good handle on which aspects are from training and which are just him.""For better
everyday memory,do what your mother told you-pay attention, eat well, sleep well and
exercise,"adds Morris Moscovitch at the University of Toronto in Canada.
28.What do we know about the two tests mentioned in the passage?
A.Memory tests focus on Dellis's sense of direction.
B.Rote memorization needs familiar places to work well.
C.Loci turns information into visual pictures in fixed locations.
D.Word lists are used in the study of position-based memory skills.
29.What does the underlined word"this"refer to?
A.The activation of caudate nuclei.
B.The unique brain activity change.
C.The opposite hippocampus pattern.
D.The recall task in the memory palace.
30.What contributes to Dellis's excellent memory?
A.Greater rote learning skills.
B.Larger hippocampus in size.
C.Stronger mental focus ability.
D.Better brain region connection.
31.What is Craig Stark's attitude toward the use of loci?
A.Cautious.
B.Supportive.
C.Opposed.
D.Unconcerned.

High heat impacts the photosynthetic (process in plants.Overheating causes the
enzymes of the Calvin cycle to break down more quickly, which impacts the uptake of CO2.
The structure of chlorophyll is changed in response to high heat, leading to a reduction in
photosynthetic activity, ultimately decreasing overall plant growth.Too much heat also makes
tiny holes on leaves close, which reduces the rate of photosynthesis.Increased temperatures
cause respiration(呼吸作用)to exceed photosynthesis, thereby reducing net carbon gain,
Both increased and decreased precipitation can change water availability, nutrient uptake,
and overall plant physiology.Severe precipitation can negatively impact the water balance,
water transport system, and productivity of plants, while lower amounts or absence of
高二英语试题第6页(共12页)
precipitation can lead to drought.Decreased precipitation results in less water in soil, reducing
the water available for uptake by plant roots. The main effects of drought on crop plants include
slower cell division and growth, poor water and nutrient uptake, and smaller leaves.Drought
also causes irregular opening and closing of tiny holes on leaves, which affects photosynthesis
and respiration, further reducing water and nutrient uptake.
Elevated levels of atmospheric CO2 have been observed to cause positive responses in
plants. They may form fewer tiny holes per unit of leaf area. This change helps plants
reduce water loss through transpiration, allowing them to use water more efficiently and gain
more carbon per unit of water lost as CO2 levels rise.Higher CO2 concentrations boost plant
growth and productivity by enhancing photosynthesis. But it does not apply universally across
different species,so increased CO2 alone does not guarantee greater yield in all cases.
The impacts of climate change on plants are significant. If the current situation persists, the
yields of primary crops are projected to decline by the year 2100,with estimates of a 20-45%
reduction for corn,5-50%for wheat,and 20-30%for rice,according to FAO

If punctuation (were a toolbox, quotation marks would be the small but flexible multi
tool.They shape tone,highlight terms,and even reflect cultural customs.36 Their
influence is truly anything but.
Quotation marks connect readers with characters'voices.37 To handle the problem,
here are some best practices:
PLACEMENT OF PUNCTUATION:In American English,commas()and periods go
inside the quotation marks:
“I can't believe it,”Jane said.
“I can't believe it.."
In British English, punctuation placement varies, often depending on whether it's part of the
quoted material:
"I can't believe it",Jane said.
NEW SPEAKER,NEW PARAGRAPH:Each time a different character speaks,start a new
paragraph to maintain clarity:
“What time is it?.”Helen asked.
“Almost midnight,,”Bob replied.
Quotation marks are also useful for introducing unfamiliar or technical terms, especially in
explanatory writing:
The process is called“photosynthesis.”
This signals to readers that the term is being introduced in context.38 Additionally,
avoid using quotation marks around terms that are already familiar or used in their expected
sense.
Quotation marks are also commonly used to reference the titles of short works, such as
articles, poems, songs, and chapters. In addition, quotation marks can highlight nicknames or
euphemisms(委婉):
Michael "The Machine"Richardson set a new fishing record.
Samantha was known for her "creative accounting"techniques, which were less than legal.
39 American English typically uses double quotation marks for primary quotes and
single marks for quotes within quotes:
"He said,I'm not going,'"Jasmine explained.
In British English,it's often the opposite
Here's to quotation marks:flexible, powerful, and essential for effective communication.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Alexa and Brittany were best friends through and through. They'd been glued to each
other's side ever since Brittany moved next door in the second grade.
Often, the two girls would play together at the park across the street, their days always
filled with laughter. They'd swing high on the playground equipment, play hide-and-seek,or
kick a soccer ball until their legs ached. On rainy days, they'd go in one of their houses to make
crafts, play video games,or do their nails. Most days, they'd giggle and chat for hours without a
single cross word, but one day, they just could not agree on what to do next.
"Come on,let's play on the playground equipment! We've played soccer for three days
straight!"Alexa asked.
"The grass was just cut-it's perfect, short and soft!I don't want to waste it on the
playground,"Brittany replied.
"We always do what YOU want,Brittany. It's my turn to choose!"Alexa screamed, her
cheeks reddening with frustration.
"Fine!Go play by yourself then!I'm playing soccer!"Brittany shot back, planting her feet
firmly.
Alexa stormed off, anger burning in her chest. When she got home, she found Brittany's
notebook stuffed in her bag."Hmph, she can wait till tomorrow to get this back!"she resolved.
The next day at school, their teacher,Ms.Stone, asked everyone for their notebooks.
Brittany froze in panic when she didn't find hers in her bag.Nervously, she walked to Ms.Stone
and asked if she could bring her notebook in the following day instead.Ms.Stone allowed one
late assignment per month-but Brittany had already used hers. She looked upset, and walked
quietly back to her desk.
Witnessing all of this,Alexa felt butterflies in her stomach,a war going on in her head. She
knew she should tell Ms.Stone that she had Brittany's notebook, but the anger from yesterday
still remained,keeping her lips sealed.
