Activity 3 While-listening
Task 1: Listen and fill
1.Listen to the conversation and complete the table below.
Before an earthquake
Make a safety list of what to do, where to go and who to contact.
During an earthquake
(in a building)
Remember to “drop, cover and hold on”
During an earthquake

Activity 4 Post Listening
Task 1 : Pair Work.
Work in pairs. Choose a disaster and prepare a list of safety instructions.
Giving instructions
●First/First of all, you should...
●Stay calm.
●Don’t drive or walk outside.
●Collect water and food if you can.
●Cover your ...
●Listen to the news.
●Move to a safe place.
●Finally, ...
●Call an emergency number.
●Stay away from ...
●Make sure ...
●Stay indoors.
A: The flood is getting worse. What should we do?
B: Stay calm! First, .... Don’t panic.
A: Should we ...?
B: Yes, if .... Also, ....
【参考答案】
A: The flood is getting worse. What should we do?
B: Stay calm! First, find a safe, high place—like upstairs. Don’t panic.
A: Should we contact emergency services?
B: Yes, if trapped or in danger. Also, stay indoors—floodwaters outside are unsafe, with hidden hazards.
A: Right, and avoid driving or walking out. What about supplies?
B: Collect water and food if you can, in case we’re stuck. Keep listening to the news for updates.
A: Need to protect ourselves from this.
B: Exactly. Follow these, and we’ll get through the flood safely.
Task 2: Discussion
Having an emergency kit prepared is also very important. Look at the emergency supplies below. Discuss with a partner what else you would add.
Student A: We know having an emergency kit for floods is crucial. The kit already has water, food, .... I think we should add .... What do you think?
Student B: That's a good idea. I would add.... So ... can ... ..
Student C: I agree. Also, maybe .... If we need to ..., ... would be useful in a ... situation.
Student D: And don't forget about ..., like .... .... What do you think of these additions?
【参考答案】
Student A: We know having an emergency kit for floods is crucial. The kit already has water, food, radio, flashlight, whistle, and first-aid kit. I think we should add a multi-tool. It can be used to cut ropes, open cans, or fix things if needed during a flood. What do you think?
Student B: That's a good idea. I would add some extra batteries. The radio and flashlight need power, and if the flood lasts long, we might run out of battery. So extra batteries can keep these devices working.
Student C: I agree. Also, maybe some waterproof matches. If we need to start a fire for warmth or to cook (though the food is already there, but just in case), waterproof matches would be useful in a wet flood situation.
Student D: And don't forget about personal hygiene items, like wet wipes and toilet paper. Staying clean can prevent diseases, especially when we might be stuck in one place for a while during a flood. What do you think of these additions?
Task 3: Report
Report to the class the safety instructions you listed and then explain what emergency supplies people should keep on hand.
【参考答案】
If you find yourself in danger from a forest fire, first of all, stay calm. Cover your face with... Then go to a safer place if you can. ...
Now our emergency supplies, we would suggest always having on hand enough water and food for three days, a radio, ...

【答案】Headline main idea
