三、阅读理解
Every year on 4 October, people come together for the well-being (健康) of animals everywhere. That day is World Animal Day.
Starting formally in 1931 in Florence, Italy, the yearly event has become a special chance for everyone who cares about animals to make a difference. “As we share this earth with all living things, we can make a difference to all animals,” wrote a website.
In the past ten years, China has done much to improve the well-being of domestic and wild animals. The protection of Asian elephants is a good example.
Asian elephants have become endangered because of hunting for their tusks (象牙). Asian elephants in China are mostly in Yunnan Province. These wild animals sometimes eat local farmers’ crops. The government has been trying to create a more harmonious relationship between the local people and Asian elephants. For example, they make rules to stop tusk trade.
With World Animal Day around the corner, we can think of more ways to better protect our wild friends. Let’s take action together!
26.Why have Asian elephants become endangered according to the passage?
A.Because people caught them for shows.
B.Because people hunted them to make medicine.

A.Serious. B.Friendly. C.Awful. D.Nervous.

We know that many animals do not stay in one place. Birds, fish and other animals move from one place to another at a certain time. They move for different reasons. Most of them move to find food more easily, but others move to get away from places that are too crowded.
When cold weather comes, many birds move to warmer places to find food. Some fishes give birth in warm water and move to cold water to feed. The most famous migration (迁徙) is probably the migration of the fish which is called “salmon”. This fish is born in fresh water but it travels many miles to salt water. There it spends most of its life. When it is old, it returns to its birthplace in fresh water. Then it gives birth and dies there.
In the north of Europe, there is a kind of mouse. They leave their mountain homes when their homes become too crowded. They move down to the low land. Sometimes they move all the way to the seaside and many of them are killed when they fall into the sea.
Recently scientists have studied the migration of a special kind of lobster (龙虾). Every year when the season of bad weather arrives, the lobsters get into a long line and start to walk across the floor of the ocean. Nobody knows where they go.
So sometimes we know why animals move from one place to another but sometimes we don’t. Maybe living things just like to travel.
29.Most animals move from one place to another at a certain time to ______.
A.enjoy warmer weather B.get food more easily
C.find fresh water D.find beautiful places
30.The fish called “salmon” spends a long life in ______.

C.its birthplace D.rivers
31.Where do the special lobsters go according to the passage?
A.To warm water. B.To cold water.
C.To salt water. D.Nobody knows.
If you have a cat in your house, you may think that cats have one character. But if you deal with enough cats, you’ll find that cats, like people, have different character types (性格类型).
The researchers carried out a questionnaire survey (问卷调查) asking 138 questions. They were posted on the Internet and filled out by the cats’ owners. The questionnaire asked people to fill out their cat’s sex (性别), age, breed (品种), coat color, and main activity. The researchers asked the cats’ owners to fill out the questionnaire a second time after some time.
From these, the researchers drew a conclusion: there are seven character types of cats. For example, active, fearful (害怕的), friendly to human and so on. “The most fearful breed was the Russian Blue. The Bengal (孟加拉猫) was the most active breed,” says a scientist Hannes Lohi of the University of Helsinki.
In addition, Oregon State University researchers found that cats really love their owners. They see them as parents. They simply express (表达) it differently. When the researchers did the experiment with a group of fully grown cats, they found cats showed as much love to their owners as human babies, and maybe even a little more than dogs.
What’s more, people often think cats are independent animals, but a study has found that this is not true.
32.How did the researchers find the different character types of cats?
A.They did a lot of experiments. B.They asked the cats’ owners to tell them.
C.They asked questions on the phone. D.They carried out a questionnaire survey.

A.Love to their owners. B.Fear to other animals.

A.The Russian Blue is an active breed. B.Cats aren’t independent animals.
C.There are three character types of cats. D.Cats showed as much love to the owners as dogs.
35.What’s the best title of the passage?
A.Cats’ Different Character Types B.Relationship Between Cats and Human
C.Cats’ Character Types and Natural Character D.Different Breeds of Cats in the World

There were quite a few alligators around. 38 She told us that we’d better turn off the flashlights so that we could see them more clearly.
On the second day, we saw another kind of interesting animal—dolphins (海豚). 39 They were kept in the pool dancing or playing games for people. But in Everglades National Park, we saw them swimming freely and happily in the river. Some of them jumped out of the water. 40 My youngest sister was so excited that she jumped up and down. Do you know magpies? Magpies are as much an important part of Beijing as the Palace Museum and Beijing Duck. But how much do you know about this type of birds?
In the Chinese culture, magpies are also called xique, which means “bird of happiness”. People believe that seeing magpies can bring them good luck. The birds even have a special job in the Chinese story of the Qixi Festival. It’s said that magpies would form the bridge in the sky for Niulang and Zhinyu so that they got to get together once a year. As a result, magpies stand for true love and happiness too.
Magpies have black and white feathers with slightly blue tails. With their special “chachacha” sounds from early morning till night, it is not difficult for birdwatchers to notice them. You can always see them chatting on the roof or in the branches (树枝).
Magpies have some very interesting living habits. They always live around humans, because they mainly live on the food we throw away. In winter, many magpies turn to a more plant-rich diet. Their diet includes around 60% vegetables. Sometimes they may look for food on the ground but not eat it right away. Instead, they will save the food for the future.
Even more surprising, they will stay around the dead birds and make sad sounds. It is just like they are holding a funeral (葬礼). All these unbelievable things lead some people to believe that magpies may be the cleverest of all birds.
