The guide dog is very useful to a blind person, but it is not easy for a dog to become a guide dog. A guide dog must be smart and healthy and have a good disposition (性格). And it must be responsible (有责任心的).
It usually takes several months to two years to train (训练) a little dog into a guide dog. When a guide dog is about fourteen months old, it begins intensive (加强的) lessons. And the lessons usually last three to five months. A guide dog has to learn to watch the traffic and cross the street safely. It has to learn to follow some commands like “walk”, “left”, “right” and “sit”. Then the owner and the dog meet. They need to learn to work together for four weeks and that is the most important part of the training. But many blind people don’t like animals and they don’t know how to work with dogs, so only a few blind people find a guide dog useful.
