(四川期中)The morning of 26th December was warm and sunny on Phi Phi Don Island in Thailand.
The sunshine was a welcome change from the wet, rainy weather at home. After breakfast,we went to the
beach. My parents played volleyball and I ran straight into the clear water. I had great fun.
Suddenly, I heard a roar(咆哮). Then saw a big wave.“Mark, run!”I heard my mum shout before
the big wave came to me. In no time I was under the water. I tried to get out of the water, but I couldn’t.
Luckily,a hand pulled me up. I breathed and looked around. I was in a tree with a Thai man.
I was shocked and was not able to move. The only thing I could do was sit and watch. The hours passed
slowly. Suddenly, both the Thai man and I saw a plane and we started shouting. The pilot saw us and came
to save us. Half an hour later we were in the hills. A lot of people were there. I felt lonely and lost. Just
then,my mum ran to me and said,“Mark, you're here.”I was relieved at that time.
Two days later we left the island. We felt lucky to be alive, but we were sorry for the people there who
lost their homes.

(铁岭一模)①Water is one of the most useful things on Earth. It gives us life. We think water is
something soft and gentle, but sometimes water is so powerful that it can even be destructive(破坏性的).
Here we talk about floods.
②There are two main kinds of floods:flash floods and slow floods. Flash floods are sudden floods of
great volumes of water. They overflow(溢出)the banks of the rivers and wash away everything they touch into
pieces. Flash floods are destructive. The other type is slow floods. They rise over a long period of time.
Usually as more and more rain falls, the water in rivers rise and land floods. These slow floods happen in
every country in the world.
③Floods are the world's biggest natural killer. When floods happen, crops are damaged, houses are
washed away, roads are destroyed, and people are killed. Every year in America water kills over 100 people,
most in flash floods. Floods also cause huge economic losses.
④Floods are a serious problem. Worse still, they may become more powerful and happen more often as
global warming becomes more and more serious. Around the world, sea levels will rise, and more lives will
be taken by the flood waters of our planet.
⑤Floods are a serious natural disaster and we must try to stop them from happening often to protect our
lives and homes.
( )9.What can we know about flash floods?
A.They happen unexpectedly. B. They are slow, but powerful.
C.They are less destructive than slow floods.D.They appear everywhere around the world.
( )10.How does the writer explain“Floods are the world's biggest natural killer”?
A.By giving facts. B.By telling stories.
C.By raising questions. D.By showing steps.

Climate change is driving increasing wildfires, and those burns make up a large share of planet-heating
pollution. Now,a company in Berlin uses AI with sensors(传感器)in forests to find minor(微小的)burns
before they spread into big fires.
With nose-like sensors, fires can be discovered in their early stages, making it easier to extinguish
them before they become too large or difficult to control. The company Dryad has set up 50 sensors across
different locations, from the Middle East to California. Recently, the ensors discovered a small fire in
Lebanon within just 30 minutes.
Another way to stop big fires is to set“controlled burns” outside of fire season to clean some trees and
grass that may become fuel for fires. These controlled burns are usually carefully planned and monitored by
burn managers to make sure that they are safe and do not get out of control.
But to do the work, burn managers need to know how the fire might behave so it doesn't lose control.
"They need to know things like the weather patterns, road conditions and the amount of moisture(湿度)in
the plants,”says Yolanda Gil,a researcher at the University of Southern California.
After interviewing fire scientists,Gil and their team used AI to create a smart assistant(助手)to help
burn managers decide where and when to make controlled burns. "It's kind of like Apple's Siri. But for burn
managers, the technology can help them understand the situation in an area and provide a way to make a safe
controlled burn,"Gil says.
( )13. What is the purpose of AI from the Berlin company?
A.To monitor climate change. B.To work out the causes of a wildfire.
C.To cut down on pollution in forests. D.To prevent fires in their early stages.
( )14. What does the underlined“extinguish”in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Make out. B.Put out. C.Follow up. D. Cover up.
( )15. What do we know about the“controlled burns”?
A.They can promote the growth of trees. B.They can hurt burn managers anytime.
C. They can help clear away fuel for wildfires. D.They are often carried out during fire season.
( )16.Which of the following information do burn managers need to know?
a.Road conditions. b. Weather patterns.
c.The number of plants. d. The temperature of the burns.

heard a huge sound. The frightened skiers rushed to where the noise came from and found that part of the
hillside above the village had dropped down onto two buildings in which nineteen people had been sleeping.
As soon as the day broke, rescue workers began digging for people alive. They used hand tools because
they were worried that machines might hurt anyone trapped under the rocks. For two days, rescue workers
never stopped digging. On Thursday evening they found the first body. The next day they found two more.
They had almost given up hope of finding anyone alive when,at 5:37 am on Saturday morning, a special
machine they were using found a small movement.
Immediately someone shouted to tell the workers to be silent. Everyone stopped talking, and no one
moved. A fireman lay down over to a hole in a large piece of concrete(混凝土)and shouted down,“Can
anyone hear me?"“I can hear you," came the reply.
Worried that their digging could start more rocks falling down the mountain, rescue workers began
carefully taking away the rocks and dirt on top of the trapped man. By 10 o’clock,a small hole had been
made. At 10:10 am,rescue workers sent two tubes down through the hole, one carrying warm air and the
other a warm drink. Then a microphone was passed through the hole so that they could talk to the man.
