Gestures are a special kind of language. But be careful! The same gesture can mean different things in different cultures.
We all know the “OK” gesture. But do you know the different meaning of it? In the UK, the US, and many other western countries, it means “everything is fine” or “yes.” People might use it to say they agree with something. However, in Brazil and Germany, this gesture is impolite.
When people cross their fingers, they usually hope for good luck. For example, if you have an exam, you can cross your fingers and wish for a good result. In the UK and the US, it’s a common way to show hope. But in some Asian countries, people may not understand this gesture at all.
Besides, making a “thumbs up” sign, with your thumb pointing upwards, shows that you like something in many western countries. It’s a way to say “good job” or “excellent.” However, in the Middle East and some West African countries, this gesture is very rude(粗鲁的), just like using bad words.
When you travel or meet people from other cultures, it is really important to learn about their gestures. This helps you talk with others better and avoid disagreement(避免分歧). Remember, a small gesture can tell a big story!

A. You’re not good B. All is well C. It’s rude

B. The importance of having gestures.

In China, there is race between robots and people. For the first time, robots join a half-marathon(半程马拉松).

Because it’s hard for them to keep balance(平衡), some robots need people to walk with them. And they may run out of power.
Although the robots don’t win, the race is important. Scientists want to see if robots can finish long-distance(长距离的) running like people. This race shows that robots still need improvements to run as fast as people.
