What do you think of black cats? Are they unluckier than cats of other colours? Many people in Western countries think so. For instance, people from countries like England and Romania believe that seeing this creature cross your path means bad luck.
Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), did a study on cat colours and people’s understandings of cat personalities. The study found that people do judge cat personalities by colour. Scientists did a survey on the Internet. There were 49 statements (描述) matching five cat colourings with 10 personalities. People think orange and bi-coloured (双色的) cats are friendly, tri-coloured (三色的) cats are not generous, and white cats are calm, lazy and shy. As for black cats, people don’t think they have special personalities.
But why do so many people dislike keeping black cats as pets? People think black cats have less special personalities, which might be because of their bad reputation. They think black cats may bring bad luck, especially at Halloween. Movies and television shows also make people believe that.
Although people have these ideas, UC Berkeley scientists give another reason: people don’t think black cats are pretty enough. After all, nothing can show black cats are unluckier than other cats. “It’s the personality of the cat, not the colour, that will let you know if the cat is right for you,” Cathy Marden, a scientist said.

The Huaping Senior High School for Girls in Lijiang, Yunnan is famous not only because lots of students there enter universities, but also because it is the first girls’ public high school that doesn’t need tuition in our country —— it’s free to everyone in it.
Nothing would have happened without Zhang Guimei, the head teacher of the Huaping Senior High School for Girls. The 65-year-old woman has been fighting against the unfair things that girls in the mountain areas face for a long time.
In 2001 , Zhang noticed that many girls from poor families had little chance of getting an education. Then the idea of starting a free school for girls came into her mind. To raise money, between 2002 and 2007, Zhang spent the summer and winter vacations on the streets asking people to give away money to her school. However, she only collected about 10,000 yuan.
Later, a reporter reported her story. At last, she got two million yuan from the government, and the Huaping Senior High School for Girls was opened in September, 2008.
There were many difficulties at first, but Zhang didn’t give up. “I want my students to go to good universities,” she said. So far, nearly 2,000 girls have left school and received higher education at universities. These came at the cost of Zhang’s health.
When asked why she made efforts to help girls in the mountain areas, Zhang said, “Education for women can influence three generations (代).”
