Passage1
After my father left us, my mother had to go back to work to support our family. Once I came out of the kitchen, complaining, “Mom, I can’t peel potatoes. I have only one hand.”
Mom never looked up from her work. “You get yourself into that kitchen and peel those potatoes,” she told me. “And don’t ever use that as an excuse for anything again!”
In the second grade, our P.E. teacher lined up my class on the playground and had each of us race across the monkey bars, swinging (摆动) from one high steel rod to the next. When it was my turn, I shook my head. Some kids behind me laughed and I went home crying.
That night I told Mom about it. She hugged me and I saw the “we’ll see about that” look. The next afternoon, she took me back to school. At the empty playground, Mom looked carefully at the bars. “Now, pull up with your right arm.” she advised. She stood by as I struggled to lift myself with my right hand until I could hook the bar with my other elbow (手肘). Day after day, we practiced, and she praised me for every rang (横档) I reached. I’ll never forget the next time, crossing the rungs, I looked down at the kids who were standing with their mouths open.
One night, after a dance at my new junior high. I lay in bed crying. I could hear Mom come into my room. “Mom,” I said, crying sadly, “none of the boys would dance with me.”
For a long time, I didn’t hear anything. Then she said. “Oh, honey, someday you’ll be beating those boys off with a bat.” Her voice was weak and trembling. I peeked (偷看) out from my covers to see tears running down her face. At that moment, I knew how much she suffered because of me. She had never let me see her tears.

Passage2
It’s very important to know yourself. It’s helpful to choose your own jobs in the future. Everyone goes through mental and physical changes during adolescence (青春期). If you know yourself, you’ll deal with different kinds of stress more easily and you’ll be more successful as well. Although adolescence is difficult, it’ll be much easier if you try to manage your feelings better. Here are a few skills for you to deal with your feelings.
Know about your feelings
What feelings are you experiencing? For example, are you sad, stressed, angry, joyful or excited? You must know your own feelings now.
Accept your feelings
Many people don’t want others to know their feelings. They always hide their true feelings. They think these feelings will go away over time. But they aren’t right. Remind yourself that it’s OK to feel your feelings.
Be familiar with your feelings
How to understand your own feelings better? You can record how you’re feeling in the morning, afternoon and at night on a notebook. And you should also write down the changes in your body at different times.
Express your feelings
Expressing your feelings in the right way is one of the best ways to make them disappear. You can cry, exercise, go shopping or talk to someone you trust. But no matter how you express your feelings, you can’t hurt yourself or others.
In your life, you may experience many different feelings. But as long as you deal with these feelings in the right way, you’ll be able to live comfortably.

Passage3
I have three exams next week. So, I’ll spend most of the weekend studying. I’m worried about the exams, but they aren’t the only thing I’m worried about. Like most people, I’m worried about missing out on all the fun activities my friends will do.
I have serious FOMO—fear (害怕) of missing out. It is the feeling or idea that you are missing out on something important or enjoyable that others are experiencing. And a big part of FOMO is the feeling that your friends won’t miss you when you’re not there.
FOMO is a pretty common feeling, especially when people are going out more. Social media (社交媒体) makes it even worse. It’s easy to see other people doing fun things while you’re doing something boring. Don’t get me wrong—I also do fun things, but I still get caught up in FOMO.
Worst of all, I feel like I’m missing out on things I don’t even want to do. Even though I don’t want to go to a party, I still get FOMO when I think about my friends who are already there. When you feel like you’re missing out, it can be hard to decide if you even wanted to go out in the first place. It can make you do things you don’t want to. No one wants to miss a joke or see all the pictures when they weren’t there. But it’s important to take a step back and think about it. Would you have suggested that activity? Do you really want to go, or do you want to go because your friends are going? Do you have something else you’d rather be doing?
Even though FOMO can be harmful to your life, it can also have some good benefits. I know a lot of people who joined clubs or took up new hobbies because their friends did. A lot of these clubs and hobbies have made people happy, including me. In that way, I owe (归功于) some of my school experience to FOMO.
So it’s best to avoid FOMO as much as possible. The best thing to do is to check in with yourself and notice how you feel. If you have a good reason for not doing something, don’t worry too much about missing out. Do what’s best for you, even if that means uninviting yourself from a plan. Your friends are your friends for a reason—they won’t forget about you.
1.What do we know about FOMO?
A.Social media is one of the causes of FOMO.
B.People with FOMO hardly make very good friends.
C.People with FOMO won’t do anything against their wishes.
D.FOMO is the feeling that something enjoyable is happening.
2.The writer probably agrees that ________.
A.We should always be with our friends, or they will forget us
B.We should follow our hearts and not worry about missing out
C.We should allow people with FOMO to go after their hobbies
D.We should closely watch what our friends do to avoid FOMO
3.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Never Miss Out on Important Things. B.Take Part in More Fun Activities.
C.It’s Common to Get Worried. D.It’s OK to Uninvite Yourself.

Sometimes it can be really hard not to tell anyone that you’re feeling sad, worried, or upset. Don’t keep feelings locked inside. If that, it can even make you feel sick!
But if you talk with someone who cares for you, like your mom or dad, you will not be all alone with your problems or worries. It doesn’t mean your problems and worries go off, but at least someone else knows what your trouble is and can help you find ways to do with it.
If the person doesn’t understand what you mean right away, try explaining it in a different way or give an example that has something to do with you. Of course, there are many ways for you to speak up your feelings. If you think you'll have trouble saying what’s on your mind, write it down on a piece of paper.
Some of us, just like some adults (成年人), are more private (有隐私的) than others. That means some people will feel shy about sharing their feelings. A kid doesn’t have to share every feeling he or she has, but it is important to share feelings when a kid needs help.

When I was young, my mom was not good at cooking, but she always wanted to make breakfast and dinner for my dad and me. She thought it was the way to show her love for us. However, the meals she made were pretty special—she would make breakfast food for dinner.
One night after school, when Dad and I entered the kitchen, we saw my mom was very upset. As we came closer, we saw at least ten pieces of burnt bread on the desk. I knew that she wasted them again. Before my mom said anything, my dad gave her a hug, grabbed (抓) a piece of bread and said, “Darling, thank you for making the delicious bread for us.” And he turned around to me and asked me what happened at school. I don’t remember what I told him that night, but I do remember that he put some butter (黄油) on the burnt places, and ate it up as usual with every single bite (咬).
After dinner, my mom said sorry to us for making the burnt bread. Dad smiled at her and said, “It’s OK. I love burnt bread, dear. You did it very well.” The other day after dinner, I asked him if he really liked that burnt bread. What he said that night is worth remembering for my whole life. He said, “Mom is busy and tired every day. She just doesn’t want us to be hungry. And a bit burnt food never hurts anyone.”
As time went by, I became to know that life is not perfect and nobody is perfect. So don’t be angry if the bread gets burnt. No matter what kind of relationship it is in between husband and wife or parent and child, a bit of understanding of each other will make the world better. Be kind to those around you and the sunshine will exactly come around you.

Passage8
(24-25八年级下·重庆丰都·期末)阅读下文并回答问题。

【导语】本文讲述了作者通过给父亲留便条的方式表达对父亲的关心和爱的故事。
1.句意:当我们到医院时,他还是咳得很厉害。根据“When we got to the hospital”可知,讲述的是过去发生的事情,所以空处用动词的过去式coughed,故填coughed。
make a decision to do sth“决定做某事”,固定短语,所以空处用decide的名词形式,故填decision。
6.句意:有些是这样的:“爸爸,我把刀和苹果放在桌子上了。”此处是举例说明留言的内容,like“例如,好比”符合语境,故填like。
7.句意:爸爸,我希望你在新床上好好休息。根据“I hope”可知,事情未发生,所以空处用一般将来时(will do),故填will rest。
on the phone“在电话里”,固定短语,故填the。
