The Luling Mountains in Jinzhou, Liaoning Province, used to be a deserted area without even a single tree. Now, it is a leafy paradise for birds, and tourists are flooding in. The huge transformation has occurred thanks to the consistent efforts of Tian Wangui, 67, and his wife Lu Min, 63, over nearly half a century.
In 1982, the couple contracted (承包) the land-use rights of the two mountains near their home. They intended to plant fruit trees in the mountains to make a living. Back then, the mountains were deserted with no trees at all. To help the seedlings (树苗) they planted survive in the barren (贫瘠的) land, the couple had to carry water to the mountains on their backs. They also bought whatever seeds were available from a nearby forest farm and spread them every spring, hoping to afforest the mountains. With such an extensive planting method, however, they initially failed to see many seeds take root in the barren soil. But the couple didn’t give up.
The couple’s perseverance finally paid off. They discovered that some tree species were tough enough to survive, including pine and mulberry. Now, more than 50,000 trees of over 20 species cover the land they contracted, following their consistent efforts to sow tree seeds year after year.
As the mountains became lush (郁郁葱葱), Tian and Lu were charged with a new task-patrolling (巡逻) their nearly 67 hectares of forest every day to prevent fires. The patrol even didn’t stop on the eve of last year’s Chinese Lunar New Year. Instead of watching the CCTV Spring Festival Gala on Jan. 21st like most Chinese, the couple went to patrol the mountains with the families of their son and daughter. “Many people set off fireworks to mark the arrival of the new year, so the holiday is a time when we have to stay cautious against fire threats,” Tian said.
The couple has no plans to quit their work, and they hope their children will follow in their footsteps. “We cherish the mountains and trees as we cherish our own children,” Lu said. “Even as we grow old, they will continue to patrol the woods and watch over the birds.”
24. What does the second paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The mountains. B. The forest farm.
C. The poor couple. D. The tough condition.
25. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. More than 20 species were sowed every year.
B Pine and mulberry cannot survive on the land.
C. Their continuous efforts eventually worked.
D. They bought 50,000 trees according to the contract.
26. Which of the following can best describe the couple?
A. Honest and hardworking. B. Curious and brave.
C. Determined and persevering. D. Friendly and intelligent.
27 Why do the couple decide to continue their work?
A. They regard the mountains as their children.
B. They want their children to succeed their career.
C. They can earn much money from the mountains.
D. They have a life-long contract with the government.

Even if you haven’t held a conversation with Siri or Alexa, you’ve likely encountered a chatbot online. They often appear in a chat window that pops up with a friendly greeting: Thank you for visiting our site. How can I help you today? Depending on the site, the chatbot is programmed to respond accordingly and even ask follow-up questions.
Chatbots communicate through speech or text. Both rely on artificial intelligence technologies like machine learning and natural language processing (NLP), which is a branch of artificial intelligence that teaches machines to read, analyze and interpret human language. This technology gives chatbots a baseline for understanding language structure and meaning. NLP, in essence, allows the computer to understand what you are asking and how to appropriately respond.
With developments in deep learning and reinforcement learning, chatbots can interpret more complexities in language and improve the dynamic nature of conversation between human and machine. Essentially, a chatbot tries to match what you’ve asked to an intent that it understands. The more a chatbot communicates with you, the more it understands and the more it learns to communicate like you and others with similar questions. Your positive responses reinforce its answers, and then it uses those answers again.
From customer service chatbots online to personal assistants in our homes, chatbots have started to enter our lives. In almost every industry, companies are using chatbots to help customers easily navigate their websites, answer simple questions and direct people to the relevant points of contact. Personal assistants like Siri and Alexa are designed to respond to a wide range of scenarios and queries, from current weather and news updates to personal calendars, music selections and random questions.
28. Why does the author mention Siri and Alexa in Paragraph 1?
A. To give examples of chatbots. B. To show where to find a chatbot.
C. To explain how a chatbot works. D. To compare different chatbots.
29. What is the basis of chatbots?
A. Language study. B. Data transmission.
C. Social interaction. D. Natural language processing.
30. What does the underlined word “reinforce” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Inspire. B. Strengthen.
C. Organize. D. Match.
31. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The future trend of chatbots. B. The author’s predictions.
C. The applications of chatbots. D. The effects of chatbots.

The climate crisis may lead the human race to shrink in size, as mammals with smaller frames appear better able to deal with rising global temperatures, a leading fossil expert has said.
Professor Steve Brusatte, a palaeontologist at the University of Edinburgh, suggested that the way in which other mammals have previously responded to periods of climate change could offer an insight into humans’ future. He compared the potential problem of people as similar to that of early horses, which became smaller in body size as temperatures rose around 55 million years ago.
Writing in The Rise and Reign of the Mammals, Brusatte notes that animals in warmer parts of the world today are often smaller than those in colder areas, an ecological principle known as Bergmann’s rule. “The reasons are not entirely understood, but it is probably, in part, because smaller animals have a higher surface area relative to their volume than bigger animals and can thus improve the dissipation of the extra heat,” he writes.
Brusatte said that becoming smaller was “a common way that mammals deal with climate change”. He added, “That’s not to say every species of mammal would get smaller, but it seems to be a common survival trick of mammals when temperatures rise pretty quickly. That does raise the question: If temperatures do rise really quickly, might humans get smaller? And I think that’s certainly reasonable.”
However, not all experts agree that rising temperature causes mammals to shrink. Professor Adrian Lister, of the Natural History Museum in London, said the relationship shown by the recent human remains study is weak. “We are not really controlled by natural selection,” he said. “If that was going to happen, you’d need to find large people dying before they could reproduce because of climate warming. That is not happening in today’s world. We wear clothes, we have got heating, we have got air conditioning if it is too hot.”
32. How do mammals cope with climate change according to Brusatte?
A. Moving to colder regions. B. Reducing their body size.
C. Losing their weight. D. Adapting their diet.
33. What does the underlined word “dissipation” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Exchange. B. Formation. C. Absorption. D. Emission.
34. What is Adrian Lister’s attitude towards the recent study?
A. Worried. B. Objective. C. Skeptical. D. Approving.
35. What is the best title of this text?
A. The Threat of Climate Change to Human Survival
B. The Impact of Climate Change on Mammal Body Sizes
C. The Evolutionary Trends in Mammal Body Sizes
D. The Adaptive Strategies of Mammals to Climate Change

阅读下面短文.从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It’s obvious that our society favors the outgoing personality, so being introverted (内向的) has always been seen as something that needs to be “fixed”. However, there is no fault in being introverted. ____36____
Introverts have hidden powers. ____37____. While others are busy chatting, introverts observe things most-people are unaware of. Sometimes we can even read people. While it may seem introverts are always zoned out, we’re actually analyzing and thinking of creative ideas to one day share with you.
Introverts also keep the world balanced. In a world that can’t stop talking, the ability to listen to what each other has to say is an important virtue that will assist us in building peaceful relationships of understanding. ____38____. By listening to whatever people pour out, introverts help maintain the order of the world.
Introverts can self-recharge. Though the outgoing may gain their energy through mixing in crowds, introverts are self-recharging powerhouses. ____39____. Their energy is found through loneliness.
____40____. In the noise of chatterboxes, their voices often get drowned out. There’s nothing more disappointing to an introvert than finally taking advantage of a moment to speak, only to be interrupted by the extroverts (外向者). While extroverts may speak every thought that comes to mind, an introvert will choose their thoughts carefully and only speak of the ones they think their best to share. So next time, all you have to do is to be willing to listen.
A. Unluckily, introverts are faced with a big challenge.
B. And this is exactly what our introverts are born with.
C. Introverts have shown the potential to be great leaders.
D. Extroverted people would have no one to listen to them.

Most people think that procrastination (拖延症) is a negative habit. But people like me who routinely put off doing assignments, are likely to defend our “slower” approach to getting tasks done.
I'm the only procrastination in my family. My parents and sister were all born with the “do it right now” gift. They are always in a rush, as if closely rushed by an invisible deadline. Personally, I prefer a more relaxed pace. When my parents voiced their concern about my tendencies, saying “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today,” “No way!” I responded, confidently presenting my research as a defense. It said people procrastinated when they need to solve a problem or commit to a topic or project. In these cases, delaying a decision can be beneficial. This was because our minds continue to reflect on problems even when we were not actively thinking about them, which could lead to more creative solutions. My findings filled me with satisfaction and pride. My method of getting things done was just as good as my sister’s…or so I thought.
At school we’d been talking about architecture and design. As part of the final assessment my teacher Mr. Smith announced an exciting project that each student would have a month to complete. We were expected to choose our materials, construct a small building and make use of things we had learned in class. Not only would the winners receive extra credit, but the winning constructions would be proudly displayed in the cafeteria. “I have no clue how I could get it done,” my friend Nate sighed in despair. I didn’t say anything. Not because I shared his anxiety but because I was not nervous at all. I loved hands-on projects! Picturing my brilliant work exhibited in the cafeteria, I was fully convinced that I would definitely produce something that could impress everyone. So relaxed was I that I didn’t give it a second thought for weeks.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Before I knew it, I had only one day left for the project.

M: Susan again.
W: Yeah, Susan, she just keeps emailing me about things that have nothing to do with work and nothing to do with me. What do you think I should do?
M: Well, if I were you, I would ask her to stop sending them to me.
W: I’m not sure that’s a good idea. I have to be careful about what I say. She is quite an important client.
M: Then why don’t you try doing nothing?
W: Really? I’m not just too sure about that.
M: Try this. Only reply to those work related emails and she will stop sending you all the other kinds of emails.
W: Are you sure?
M: Believe me, I have had experiences like that.

【原文】M: You know, whenever I buy apples, I just go for whatever’s on sale. But I’ve heard that different types of apples actually taste different and are good for different uses.
W: That’s true, and there are actually some interesting stories behind the names of different apple varieties. Take the Red Delicious, for example. It’s probably the most well-known apple out there.
M: Red Delicious? Oh, you mean the ones you see everywhere in supermarkets?
W: Exactly. The Red Delicious was originally grown by a farmer named Jesse Hyatt in Iowa back in the late eighteen hundreds. He called it the Hawkeye at first. Then, in the early eighteen nineties, he entered into a contest run by a fruit company, Stark Nurseries, and he won.
M: Really, what happened after that?
W: Well after winning, Stark Nurseries bought the Apple farm and renamed the Apple Stark Delicious. Later on, they changed the name again to Red Delicious to distinguish it from their Golden Delicious, which came out a bit later. In recent years, growers have been trying to make the Red Delicious even redder and bigger to appeal to consumers. But in the process, some of its sweetness has been lost.
M: Wow, it’s more complicated than I thought.

B. Pine and mulberry cannot survive on the land.
C. Their continuous efforts eventually worked.
D. They bought 50,000 trees according to the contract.
26. Which of the following can best describe the couple?
A. Honest and hardworking. B. Curious and brave.
C. Determined and persevering. D. Friendly and intelligent.
27. Why do the couple decide to continue their work?

【答案】32. B 33. D 34. C 35. B
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇议论文。文章本文探讨了气候变化对哺乳动物尤其是人类的体型的影响。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“The climate crisis may lead the human race to shrink in size, as mammals with smaller frames appear better able to deal with rising global temperatures, a leading fossil expert has said. (一位著名化石专家表示,气候危机可能会导致人类体型缩小,因为体型较小的哺乳动物似乎更能应对不断上升的全球气温。)”及第四段中“Brusatte said that becoming smaller was ‘a common way that mammals deal with climate change’. ( Brusatte说,变小是“哺乳动物应对气候变化的一种常见方式”。)”可知,根据Brusatte的说法,哺乳动物减小体型来应对气候变化。故选B项。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词句前文“Writing in The Rise and Reign of the Mammals, Brusatte notes that animals in warmer parts of the world today are often smaller than those in colder areas, an ecological principle known as Bergmann’s rule. (在《哺乳动物的兴起和统治》一书中,Brusatte指出,当今世界上温暖地区的动物通常比寒冷地区的动物要小,这是一个被称为Bergmann法则的生态原则。)”和划线词句中“The reasons are not entirely understood, but it is probably, in part, because smaller animals have a higher surface area relative to their volume than bigger animals (原因尚不完全清楚,但可能在一定程度上是因为比较起更大的动物,较小的动物相对于其体积有更高的表面积)”可知,体型较小的动物比体型较大的动物更容易散热,从而推知划线部分“and can thus improve the dissipation of the extra heat (从而可以提高额外热量的dissipation)”其中划线部分意思是“散发”。故选D项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“However, not all experts agree that rising temperature causes mammals to shrink. Professor Adrian Lister, of the Natural History Museum in London, said the relationship shown by the recent human remains study is weak.(然而,并不是所有的专家都认为气温升高会导致哺乳动物体型缩小。伦敦自然历史博物馆的Adrian Lister教授说,最近的人类遗骸研究显示的这种关系很弱。)”以及“That is not happening in today’s world.(这在今天的世界是不会发生的。)”等内容可知,Adrian Lister对最近的研究持怀疑态度。故选C项。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,根据第一段“The climate crisis may lead the human race to shrink in size, as mammals with smaller frames appear better able to deal with rising global temperatures, a leading fossil expert has said.
Though the outgoing may gain their energy through mixing in crowds introverts are self-recharging powerhouses.
E. Instead, we should appreciate introverts for various reasons.
F. They don’t need to constantly put themselves out there to be lively.
G. Just because we introverts don’t say much doesn’t always mean we’re clueless.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Before I knew it, I had only one day left for the project.

That taught me a great lesson.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Para.1 Before I knew it, I had only one day left for the project. In a panic I hastily and quickly glued together what I pulled out from our recycle bin, my hands shaking with the weight of each hasty decision. The finished result looked miserable. Several of my classmates, including Nate, had created amazingly detailed constructions. They used materials like clay, wood and so on and were highly praised by Mr. Smith. When I saw their models, I felt even more embarrassed about mine. It was obvious that they had put a lot more time into the assignment than I had.
Para.2 That taught me a great lesson. I learnt from that day the importance of deciding on my priorities and budgeting my time. From then on, I tackled things a lot earlier instead of putting things off until tomorrow. As a result, not only did I finish my tasks on time, but also I felt better because I didn’t have to panic at the last minute. At the end of the semester, my work was chosen by Mr Smith on another occasion. Seeing my change, my parents and my sister were so proud of me. It dawned on me that getting things done on time instead of being a procrastinator really counted.
