Hearing the speeding cars passing us, I had to focus on the sound of my uncle’s bicycle leading the way. At thirty, with my retinas (视网膜) dying from an eye disease, driving a car was impossible and I couldn’t give up the freedom of riding my bike.
Uncle Fred pedalled steadily. I biked a few inches behind. He shouted directions at each intersection. Suddenly, his voice rose with urgency, “Carol, stop! A car is turning.”
When we reached our destination, my shoulders ached from the ride. As I sat next to Uncle Fred, he cleared his throat and said, “Carol, did you think about getting a trained Seeing Eye dog? It can give you independence.” He knew I was afraid of dogs. Words stuck in my throat. But his voice cracked and planted the seed of an idea. My world shrunk as my blindness grew worse. Luckily, I had a good sense of direction, allowing me to visualize neighborhood routes. This skill could be an advantage when working with a dog.
After calculating, I finally called the guide dog school. The admission application arrived, but I still wasn’t sure. One day, I phoned my friend Robert, a longtime guide dog user in my town. He shared his positive experiences. Somehow, his words convinced me to give it a try.
During the training the dog trainer’s coaching and each successful walk with the dogs built my confidence. As my guide dog Misty and I bonded, my shoulders relaxed. When I returned home, Uncle Fred was the first to meet Misty. Misty sat at our feet waving her tail. She must have picked up on the positive energy that circled us like a hug. Misty drove away my anxiety as I slowly opened my heart to her. Just as Uncle Fred had predicted, overcoming my fear gave me the opportunity for more independence. My new confidence came from using a guide dog, allowing me to walk tall. Uncle Fred’s advice moved my sense of joy from my bike to my dog.
4. What drove the author to ride a bike?
A. Getting prepared for driving a car. B. Treating her disease by taking exercise.
C. Getting familiar with noisy background. D. Enjoying the freedom of moving around.
5. How did the author react to her uncle’s suggestion?
A. She thought it worth a try. B. She drew up a practical plan.
C. She was stuck in desperation. D. She refused it for fear of dogs.
6. Why did the author call Robert?
A. To invite him to adopt a dog. B. To ask him about the application.
C. To encourage him to be positive in life. D. To consult him about taking a guide dog.
7. What change did Misty bring to the author?
A. She became confident about fighting the illness.
B. She became more attached to her uncle for help.
C. She gained her independence with Misty’s help.
D. She formed her community of guide dog trainers.

Arm wrestling (扳手腕) was one of my favorite ways of playing with my brothers growing up. It allowed my younger brother and me to test our strength without getting tackled. I also put up a good fight when arm wresting with my older brother and his friends. Their greater strength and experience made the challenge even more interesting. Every match seemed to end in a good laugh, no matter who won.
Now I’m a scientist who studies animals in the wild. I have seen that playing is a great way to socialize; there is so much more to play than fun and games. When humans and other animals play, they are building trust with siblings and friends. They learn how far they can push their partners before anyone becomes angry or physically hurt. That’s called “testing boundaries.”
Older playmates may self-handicap, appearing to be less competent than they really are to help younger players learn skills and explore their abilities. Play offers a safe space, where everyone knows the rules and can experiment with new ways to move, think, and respond to others.
Over the past 30 years, I’ve learned a lot about play by watching young male elephants test their strength through sparring (拳击) games with their friends and superiors. Group sparring matches are common at sunset, when several different elephant families show up at the water hole to drink.
After the initial excitement of the arrival and a good long drink, young males slip away from the sides of their watchful moms and aunts to form sparring rings. An elder sister makes sure that the playing doesn’t get out of hand, so she is ever present with a trunk on the back or over the head to calm the enthusiasm. That way, the younger males don’t end up on the bottom of the pile.
Watching young elephants spar reminds me that play should be part of our everyday schedule — the less structure, the better.
8. What does the author want to say by mentioning his/her childhood experience?
A. Winning is not the true meaning of play. B. Children prefer to play traditional games.
C. Play is essential in children’s development. D. Arm wrestling is a safe way to test strength.
9. What benefit of play does the author emphasize?
A. It brings fun. B. It enables boundary breaking.
C. It settles conflicts. D. It develops socializing skills.
10. How do older playmates help the younger to learn during playtime?
A. By pretending to be weaker. B. By warning them of risks.
C. By testing their competence. D. By teaching necessary skills.
11. How would the author describe the elephant’s sparring games?
A. Safe and fair. B. Not strictly controlled.
C. Well-organized. D. Highly competitive.
C 9. D 10. A 11. B

根据文章第一段“Arm wrestling(扳手腕)was one of my favorite ways of playing with my brothers growing up. It allowed my younger brother and me to test our strength without getting tackled. I also put up a good fight when arm wrestling with my older brother and his friends. Their greater strength and experience made the challenge even more interesting. Every match seemed to end in a good laugh, no matter who won. (扳手腕是我小时候与兄弟们玩耍的最爱之一。它让我和弟弟能够测试我们的力量,而又不会真的动手打架。在与哥哥和他的朋友们扳手腕时,我也会全力以赴。他们更强的力量和丰富的经验使得这场较量更加有趣。无论谁赢,每场比赛似乎都以欢声笑语告终。)”以及第二段“Now I’m a scientist who studies animals in the wild. I have seen that playing is a great way to socialize; there is so much more to play than fun and games.(如今,我是一名研究野生动物的科学家。
根据文章第二段“Now I’m a scientist who studies animals in the wild. I have seen that playing is a great way to socialize; there is so much more to play than fun and games.(如今,我是一名研究野生动物的科学家。我发现,玩耍是社交的一种绝佳方式;玩耍的意义远不止于娱乐和游戏。)”可知,作者认为玩耍是一种很好的社交方式。故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Older playmates may self-handicap, appearing to be less competent than they really are to help younger players learn skills and explore their abilities.(年长的玩伴可能会自我设限,表现得比自己实际的能力要差,以帮助年轻的玩伴学习技能并探索自己的能力。)” 故选A。
根据文章第五段“An elder sister makes sure that the playing doesn’t get out of hand, so she is ever present with a trunk on the back or over the head to calm the enthusiasm. That way, the younger males don’t end up on the bottom of the pile.(一位年长的姐姐会确保玩耍不会失控,所以她总是用鼻子搭在背上或头上,以平息大家的热情。这样,年轻的雄性大象就不会在打斗中处于下风。)”可知,有年长的姐姐在旁边确保玩耍不会失控,用象鼻放在后背或者头上来平息过于高涨的热情,以防年幼的雄性大象陷入危险境地,但并没有严格的、完整细致的管控体系,整体来说大象的拳击游戏不是严格被控制的。故选B。
D
If your partner gets down on one knee to propose, or you get a call with the job offer, your reaction might be to shout it from the rooftops. But new research suggests that keeping good news a secret before telling someone else could make people feel more energized.
“Decades of research on secrecy suggest it is bad for our well-being. However, this work has only examined keeping secrets that have negative effects for our lives. Is secrecy inherently bad for our well-being or do the negative effects of secrecy tend to originate from keeping negative secrets?” asked lead researcher of the latest research Michael Slepian, PhD, a professor of business at Columbia University.
In the experiment, some participants were asked to reflect on the good news they kept secret, while others reflected on good news that was not secret, and then rated how energized the news made them feel and whether they intended to share the news with someone else. The researchers found that the participants who reflected on their positive secrets reported feeling more energized than the participants who thought about their good news that was not secret.
The research nuances our understanding of the science of secrets. Negative secrets tend to deplete us and have also been linked to anxiety and depression. Positive secrets, however, seem to have an energizing effect and make people alive. One factor could be that people often have different motivations for keeping good news to themselves. Those with positive secrets were much more likely to keep quiet for internal reasons, not because they felt any outside pressures.
“People sometimes go to great lengths to plan revealing a positive secret to make it all the more exciting. This kind of surprise can be intensely enjoyable, but surprise is the most fleeting of our emotions, ” Slepian said. “Having extra time days, weeks or even longer-to imagine the joyful surprise on another person’s face allows us more time with this exciting moment, even if only in our own minds.”
12. What did Michael Slepian think of the previous research on secrecy?
A. One-sided. B. Pointless. C. Convincing. D. Pioneering.
13. In the experiment, some participants were more energized because ______.
A. they were optimistic and cheerful.
B. they were free from secrets.
C. they had undisclosed positive secrets.
D. they had shared good news with others.
14. What does the underlined word “deplete” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Spoil. B. Exhaust. C. Confuse. D. Panic.
15. According to the last paragraph, what did Slepian suggest readers do?
A. Never reveal a secret casually.
B. Let your imagination run wild.
C. Be creative when surprising others.
D. Delay sharing a positive secret.
A 13. C 14. B 15. D
根据文章第二段“Decades of research on secrecy suggest it is bad for our well-being. However, this work has only examined keeping secrets that have negative effects for our lives. Is secrecy inherently bad for our well-being or do the negative effects of secrecy tend to originate from keeping negative secrets?”(几十年来对保密的研究表明,保密对我们的健康有害。
根据文章第三段“The researchers found that the participants who reflected on their positive secrets reported feeling more energized than the participants who thought about their good news that was not secret.”(研究人员发现,反思他们积极秘密的参与者比思考他们不是秘密的好消息的参与者感到更有活力。)
根据文章第四段“Negative secrets tend to deplete us and have also been linked to anxiety and depression.”(消极的秘密往往会deplete,也与焦虑和抑郁症有关。)
根据文章最后一段“People sometimes go to great lengths to plan revealing a positive secret to make it all the more exciting. This kind of surprise can be intensely enjoyable, but surprise is the most fleeting of our emotions”(人们有时会不遗余力地计划透露一个积极的秘密,让它变得更加令人兴奋。 和“Having extra time days, weeks or even longer-to imagine the joyful surprise on another person’s face allows us more time with this exciting moment, even if only in our own minds.”(有额外的时间——几天,几周甚至更长的时间——想象别人脸上的喜悦惊喜,让我们有更多的时间享受这个激动人心的时刻,即使只是在我们自己的脑海中。)

In the photography competition themed “Beautiful Motherland”, my entry won the first prize!
I submitted a photo of a vast golden wheat field under the setting sun. The gentle breeze made the wheat waves ripple, and the warm glow of the setting sun painted the entire field with a layer of golden light. This scene reminded me of the hardworking farmers and their bountiful harvest.
I am extremely thrilled and honored to have won the award. This contest has not only allowed me to show the beauty of our motherland but also made me appreciate the charm of nature and the efforts of our people. Rudi Gonsalves could barely contain his excitement as he sped downhill. It was the first day of his holiday in the Romanian ski resort of Poiana Brasov and he was 6,000 feet up one of its highest mountains, breathing in the cleanest air.
Weather and snow conditions were perfect. An experienced skier, he tackled the difficult “black” run with ease, knees gently bent to meet the uneven surface of the snow.
Rudi, a part-time youth worker from Epsom Downs, Surrey, regularly booked a winter holiday with his wife Sue. But Sue was scared of heights and could not overcome her sense of foreboding as the skiing season approached.
So this time Rudi, a keen sportsman and fit for his 57 years, had come alone.
As he snaked his way down the mountain on that March afternoon last year, snowflakes began to fall—lightly at first, then more heavily until the clouds blotted out the sun entirely, transforming everything into a ghostly whiteness.
He could just make out other skiers descending the slopes as fast as they could. I’d better stay close to them for safety, he decided. This could be tricky.
Straining to see ahead, Rudi was only vaguely aware of a looming outline lumbering up the mountain.
“Did anyone see me fall? Where am I?”
He looked around him, trying to get his bearings, but in every direction there was only the same vast whiteness.
Then he took out his gold watch, a treasured present from his wife. It not only told him the time, 1.54pm, it also seemed to give him strength.
It was getting dark when Rudi finally gave up his attempt to scale the mountain and decided to head downhill instead. He knew it would mean moving away from the best route back to his hotel, but there seemed to be no alternative.
Despair began to dog Rudi as he faced up to the reality of spending a night in the open. It was 5.30 pm and the temperature was dropping fast. He began to shiver, his teeth chattering uncontrollably. He felt very alone.
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

He was barely aware of two horses drawing a wagon along the lane towards him.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After three hours he was very tired, colder than he had ever felt. Hunger and thirst wore away his stomach. Using a ski as a spade, he spent half an hour scraping away the snow beneath the branch until he reached the drier soil below. To protect himself further, he used the dislodged snow to build walls for his new home. Then he stabbed around with his ski pole, collecting fallen branches for a fire and burning his two spare hats and all his Romanian paper money to kindle the flames. He didn’t dare fall asleep for fear that he might never wake up. For six hours he sat listening, hoping to hear someone calling him or to see some lights, until, dizzy and exhausted, he collapsed on to a well-used country lane.
He was barely aware of two horses drawing a wagon along the lane towards him. A weather-beaten driver loaded him into the cart and took him to his farmhouse. There Rudi, drifting in and out of consciousness, felt himself being lifted out by farm workers. But even when someone cut away his ski boots and socks, he could not feel his hands or feet. The Romanians could see that his toes and fingers were black from frost-bite. His rescuers revived him with three bowls of milk. “You saved my life,” he managed to say, his speech slow and painful. The farmer, who understood more English than he could speak, nodded and grinned, before driving him to his hotel, which was about 45 miles away. Rudi knew it was more than luck and a stranger’s kindness that kept him alive through the dilemma.

During the training, the dog trainer’s coaching and each successful walk with the dogs built my confidence.

1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
After three hours he was very tired, colder than he had ever felt.
