For Su Dike, now 25, the fascination with typhoons began not in a classroom, but under a quilt(被子).In the summer of 2012, 12-year-old Su had just moved with his parents from inland Chengdu to Hangzhou when Typhoon Haikui hit the eastern coast. Lying awake that night, he listened to the formidable sound of his first major storm.“The sound of the wind was horrible. I had never heard such a violent wind before,” he recalls. Despite the fear, Su discovered a unique“rhythm” to the typhoon, which awakened his strong interest. He immediately began researching everything he could find about these powerful storms.
Around two years later, Su got his first camera, beginning his journey into photography. However, it wasn't until he watched American filmmaker Sean C. Casey's documentary Tornado (龙卷风) Alley that his two interests finally came together. The film showed someone driving directly into the eye of a tornado, planting a seed in Su's mind to create a Chinese version of that documentary.
That teenage dream has now become reality. Over the past six years, Su and his partners, Wang

Lucheng and Zhong Yi, both in their 20s, have traveled more than 60,000 kilometers across 10provinces. They have tracked over 200 thunderstorms and typhoons along China's coastline. Their efforts led to Su's first directorial work, the short documentary Soul of the Storm, which brought him online fame in 2022. Its follow-up, Soul of the Storm 2: Cruise, has been widely viewed on the Internet, generating over 430 million views.
David Zhou from Dolby Laboratories, who has known Su since 2021, was deeply impressed by his work. Watching Su's footage of massive storm clouds rolling toward the camera, Zhou thought to himself,“If I were 10 or 20 years younger, I would join them.”
“The digital era has given us more possibilities to pursue our dreams,” Su says. He explains that his documentary isn't just about storms— it shows how his generation sees the world.“It's about how curious young people observe the sky and the world, and what our generation truly cares about.”
24. What does the underlined word“formidable” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Puzzling. B. Frightening. C. Pleasing. D. Relaxing.
25. What inspired Su to make a Chinese documentary?
A. His travel along China's coastline. B. A fancy camera from his parents.
C. His research on powerful typhoons. D. A tornado documentary he watched.
26. What can we learn about Soul of the Storm 2: Cruise?
A. It is Su's first directorial work. B. It is filmed by Su and his father.
C. It has drawn much attention online. D. It made Su become famous immediately.

Left-handed people may have a psychological edge in competition, according to a new study.Researchers found that strong left-handers show a greater appetite for competition than right-handers—not because their hands are faster, but because their minds are more competitive.
In a survey of 1,129 adults, scientists compared 50 strong left-handers with 483 strong right-handers.The clearest difference appeared in competitive drive: left-handers scored higher in what researchers call“hyper-competitive attitude”— the desire to beat others. They also showed lower anxiety-driven avoidance, meaning competition felt less threatening to them. However, no major differences were found in personality characteristics, depression, or anxiety between the two groups.
To test physical performance, participants completed a peg(钉子)-moving task as quickly as possible with each hand. The results showed no clear link between handedness and hand speed. Among right-handers, nearly half were actually faster with their left hand, and half of the left-handers were quicker with their right. This suggests that the competitive advantage of left-handers is psychological rather than physical.
So why does left-handedness remain rare— only about 10.6% of the global population? One explanation is the“evolutionarily stable strategy” theory: in most social situations, being in the majority helps with collaboration. But in face-to-face conflict, being different can be an advantage. The new study supports this idea by showing that left-handers may benefit from a competitive mindset, not a stronger hand.
This psychological advantage may also explain why left-handers are overrepresented in many sports, especially in direct one-on-one competitions. Most athletes are used to facing right-handers, so a left-handed player can upset their timing and decision-making. Still, the study authors note that sports performance is not everyday life, so more research is needed.
However, the research is not perfect. Most participants were selected through online surveys shared among students and their families, so the sample may not represent the general population. Also, the study did not measure actual wins, hormone(激素) levels, or real-world performance. With

only 11 left-handed men in the strong-left group, the results are more suggestive than conclusive.
Nevertheless, the findings offer a fresh perspective: competitive success depends not only on skill, but also on who is willing to enter the contest in the first place.
28. What can we infer from the survey involving 1,129 adults?
A. Anxiety is the main cause of low competition drive.
B. Right-handers are more likely to avoid competition.
C. Depression affects left-handers’ competitive attitude.
D. Left-handers care much about cooperation with others.
29. What is special about left-handed people according to the text?
A. Their competitive edge is mentally based. B. They are born with faster hand movement.
C. They have obvious personality differences. D. Their physical ability decides their success.
30. What can left-handers do in sports according to the text?
A. Reduce physical injuries easily. B. Dominate every sports contest.
C. Break opponents’ rhythm. D. Cooperate better with teammates.
31. What is paragraph 6 mainly about?
A. The limitations of the study. B. Advantages of online surveys.
C. The causes of left-handedness. D. Ways to improve research methods.

Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man, drawn in 1490, has long fascinated scholars as a perfect combination of art and mathematics. The drawing shows a man in two positions—— one inside a square and the other inside a circle—— with detailed notes on human proportions. But one mystery remains unsolved: the exact ratio(比例) between the circle and the square. For over 500 years, experts have tried to solve this puzzle.
Now, a London dental surgeon, Rory Mac Sweeney, claims to have found a new solution—— one that connects the drawing to the human jaw. His interest began with a question about uneven teeth. Why is the modern human jaw so often too small for its teeth? To understand the ideal proportions of the jaw, Mac Sweeney turned to da Vinci’ s work.
In a paper published in the Journal of Mathematics and the Arts, Mac Sweeney links an equilateral triangle(等边三角形) formed by the legs of the Vitruvian Man to a dental concept called Bonwill's triangle. This triangle connects specific points of the jaw and is used to study its function. He explains that this triangle can be seen as the base of a tetrahedron, a three-dimensional pyramid. By mirroring the triangle six times, a larger tetrahedron forms around the skull(颅骨). The ratio of its height to edge length is about 1.633—— very close to the 1.64 ratio he found in da Vinci's drawing.
Mac Sweeney suggests that this number appears elsewhere in nature, such as in sphere-packing problems, and may represent a universal balance of forces. He believes da Vinci may have understood this mathematical principle and hidden it in his art.
However, not all experts are convinced. Daniel Mathews, a mathematics professor at MonashUniversity, points out errors in Mac Sweeney's calculations and logic. He also questions whether daVinci intended any hidden ratio at all.“Not everything about Leonardo da Vinci has to have a secret code,” Mathews says.
Despite the criticism, Mac Sweeney is determined to continue his research. He believes his discovery points to a new organizing principle in nature—— one that da Vinci may have documented over500 years ago.
32. Why does the author mention da Vinci's Vitruvian Man in paragraph 1?
A. To introduce a long-standing puzzle. B. To show the value of modern art.
C. To present a new medical discovery. D. To explain the use of basic math.

A. Da Vinci's Artistic Research B. Errors in Mathematical Calculations

Nawaz came from a poor family in a small, remote village. As the youngest of four children, he had been eager to keep studying. However, after finishing high school, his father said to him sadly,“Son, I'm sorry, but I can no longer afford your college education.”
Nawaz felt hopeless and couldn't sleep well all night. The next morning, he dragged his feet to school, his eyes red from crying. He didn't want to give up his dream of studying, so he went straight to his teacher's office to pour out his worries.
“Teacher, my father can't pay for my education anymore,” he said, holding back his tears. His teacher looked at him with sympathy, patted his shoulder gently, and said, “Nawaz, I know how painful this is for you—I see how hard you work every day and how you stay up late to study after helping your family with farm work. Never give up. I was once a poor village boy, too. I had no money for school, so I walked three hours every day to the nearest town to work odd jobs after class. Later,I went to the city, worked day and night, went through all kinds of hardships, and finally found my way. You are smarter and more determined than I was— so can you.” These words inspired Nawaz greatly and lit up his heart.
Taking his teacher's advice, Nawaz decided to go to Karachi to find a job. He had never left his village before. The noisy crowds and heavy traffic in the city totally frightened him. He missed his family, friends and the peaceful mountains deeply. For over a month, he struggled to sleep and often felt homesick. But he never once thought of quitting.
Finally, he found a job in a small restaurant. He waited tables, cleaned floors and washed dishes carefully every day. He worked long hours, saving every coin for his college fees. Sometimes he was so tired that he wanted to rest, but his dream of studying always encouraged him to keep going.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Slowly but steadily, he earned enough to pay for his education and daily expenses.
After graduation, Nawaz returned to his hometown and found a meaningful job.
